LEBANON, Tenn. — A Middle Tennessee child who might have thought a loaded handgun was a video game controller has fatally shot herself.

WTVF-TV in Nashville quoted Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe, who said the 3-year-old girl picked up her stepfather's .380 caliber pistol and shot herself in the stomach Sunday night.

Ashe said the girl's mother was in the same room and the stepfather was asleep when it happened.

The mother told investigators her daughter could have thought the gun was a controller for a Nintendo Wii.

The stepfather told deputies he got out the gun because he heard a prowler, then left it on a living room end table.

The child died at a hospital. Her name wasn't immediately released.

A good reason why not to own guns. Sure the father heard a prowler and thought he might just leave the gun out in case the prowler broke in and didn't have a gun to attack the family with. Seriously... at least put them somewhere out of sight or where kids can't get them. Or... knowing the gun is out... keep a better look out for your kids...

Indeed. How do you forget that there's a fully loaded, unlocked firearm on the end table with the safety off? Especially with a three year old about.

I'm tempted to claim it's a cover-up to something far more intentional.

It has to be a cover up. Unless the family suffered from generations of incest and had mental disabilities I dont see how they could've let that happen.

I don't quite see it happening.

She also thought it was a video game controller? She play with it before?

First of all, this fox news you're quotin' Tenser. I though you knew better.

Second, wouldn't she had tried to point it at the screen? I have never used a gun, but my first though is that the gun was to heavy for her.

Here's an other article with some more stuff which fox didn't say:

Her mother, ****, 32, told them **** had played on the games consol for days at a time.
The most logical would be that she tried to point it at the screen, which was what I thought before I found this article. Then how did she shot her self in the stomach? Maybe, as I said before, the gun was to heavy for her.

Regarding the sound the step-father heard:

He fetched his gun, which he usually kept unloaded in a cabinet and went to investigate. After failing to find anyone, he left the gun in the living room and went to bed.
He could have put it down in such a way, that when the toddler whent to pick it up, the barrel was pointed towards her and she tried to grab the handel which was further away from her. If you get my train of thoughts.

But yes, the whole story could also be a cover up.
Yeah, the article I quote does mentions their names but I censored it here. Is it Ok if I post the link anyway?

EDIT:
Here is a picture of the gun that shot her(top), and the WII-gun(bottom). It probably deflates the cover-up story.

I'm tending towards the idea of something more sinister myself.
- guns are heavy, 3 year olds are weak
-emulating her parents, she wouldnt point the wii-mote at her own stomach, she'd point it at the t.v.
-guns are serious stuff, if you brought one out because you thought you heard a prowler, theres no way you'd just forget about it, unless you were highly intoxicated.

1. Toy guns should not look like this.
2. The dad sounds like a drunk idiot.
3. The kid doesn't sound too bright either.
4. Who was playing games for days at a time? The baby? How do you let your 3 year old play with the toy gun in that picture all day every day and then set the real gun in the picture next to it.

Wasn't the kid 3 years old? No offense to kids but they're all kind of dumb at that age. Both parents should be in jail if they were aware that the gun was out. I'm sure they're complete morons and this didn't seem like a problem to them at the time. We're better off punishing them so they smarten up, I'm sure they'll have more kids.

Well... if it was an accident... I get it, my sis, when she was 3 years old was pretty strong, and saw me playing PS3 and wanted to play too. She was better than me in Soul Calibur.... anyways... she might have gotten confused and picked up the real gun thinking it was the fake one (I thought fake guns had to have the orange thing at the end of the barrel to distinguish them from real guns) and tried to point it as the tv, obviously because of the weight she couldn't and it might have slipped and that's when she shot herself. Still very dumb parents...

David could not see the pictures.

And I think this situation is more the fault of the parents, if not a cover up story. It's like Tenser said, you don't take your eyes off a kid long enough for them to shoot themselves in the stomach when a gun with the safety off is in their accessibility.

the 3 year old might not have realized that the gun was being held backwards and just pushed on the trigger with her thumbs. as much as i appreciate my gun owner rights i am daily reminded that people aren't also born with right to common sense. to quote House... "People are idiots."

the only one that i find disturbing is the last one.

in the first two, there are obvious safety precautions that are taken, and are performed under adult supervision.

in each of these cases, the parents have elected to own firearms and to expose their kids to them. in the first two examples, i think it is done correctly, maybe a little early, but at least it is done correctly.

the last kid will end up on an epic fail poster someday, i promise.

I'm just realising now, why the heck is anyone relating this incident to a wii-mote?
A kid took a gun and shot herself in the stomach, the wii-mote thing is nothing more than a way for the parents to take the blame off of their negligence and put it on something else.

jim5cents
03-11-2010, 06:05 PM
i think someone was trying to make a connection to foulplay, implying that a 3 year old does not have the strength or dexterity to shoot themselves.

here is what happened.

pops has his gun out, he is a hick, proud of his gun, probably been drinking. passes out, kid picks up gun, shoots self, dies. parents are young, immature, ignorant, and say "oh it is an accident, it was the toy's fault...couldn't be our own fault, billy ray is an excellent father and bobbie jo is an excellent mother.

Kong
03-11-2010, 06:11 PM
Yes, important point, the kid did not do this because the gun looked like a Wiimote. She did it because there was a loaded gun with the safety off within easy reach on a coffee table at her height while she was unsupervised. It could have looked like a pile of dog poop and she still probably would have put it up to her stomach and squeezed.

It is a bit more stupid of the parents if they knew their kid played with a toy that looked exactly like the real gun for 15 hours a day but ultimately that has nothing to do with it.

honestly, even if the kids are being taught in a "safe environment", it's still wrong. Then again I'm totally against guns and violence (except video games, yeah kinda hypocritical but it helps release frustrations), but you have to consider, some kids, even if they learn what guns are and how they work when they are little, it doesn't mean they won't have accidents(not so accidental accidents) when they grow up. If there's a gun lying around and the person goes crazy for a moment there, he could do something stupid, having or not having knowledge of the use of firearms.

More accurately they came to escape religious persecution and even that is not 100% truth. There is no one reason.

1. The country was not founded for the purpose to be a religious nation.
2. What ever the original purpose was doesn't really matter. You don't do something today because people 200 years ago wanted to do it. Make your own world; don't live in someone else's.

You don't leave a kid alone with a gun and then tell the police that you weren't watching the kid while you were in the room long enough for the kid to kill herself.
