What can I say? I love James Bond...not in a gay way. I remember going to see GoldenEye in 1995 and I was hyped, I enjoyed Roger Moore and Sean Connery so I was a bit skeptical when Pierce Brosnan took over the role as James Bond but he delivered an amazing performance. I wish I could say the same about Tomorrow Never Dies but that's another review. OK down to the review:
The game follows the movie, but if you haven't seen GoldenEye, I'll bring you up to speed:
In Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union in 1986 MI6 discovers a secret chemical weapons facility in the Byelomorye Dam, Bond is sent out to infiltrate the plant by bungee jumping from Byelomorye Dam. He is to join fellow 00 Agent Alec Trevelyan in destroying the plant but Trevelyan is apparently killed by Col. Arkady Ourumouv and Bond escapes the plant in an airplane. In 1995 (approximately 9yrs later) Bond is in Monte Carlo to follow Xenia Onatapp a member of a crime family, also Trevelyan faked his own death. [to speed it up a little im gonna skip ahead...to my favorite scene] Bond chases Ourumouv whom had Natalya in a car with him through St. Petersburg in a T-55 Tank to Janus' armored Train. Bond kills Ourumouv but Trevelyan escaped trapping Bond and Natalya in the train, and to make matters worse the train is set to self-destruct but Bond cuts through the train's floor with his laser watch and he and Natalya escape before the train explodes. Bond and Natalya fly over a jungle in a plane in Cuba but then are shot down, the two escape the wreckage but Xenia Onatapp rappels down from a helicopter and attacks Bond and gets him in a stranglehold, but Bond manages to shoot down the helicopter and Xenia still attached to her rappel cord is crushed against a tree and killed. Now the final scene takes place on the Goldeneye satellite dish where Bond manages to sabotage it and him and Trevelyan have a fight at the bottom of the dish, Bond pushes Alec off and Bond escapes in a helicopter piloted by Natalya. Goldeneye is destroyed and falls on Trevelyan killing him instantly, Boris Grishenko, claims "I AM INVINCIBLE!!!" before liquid nitrogen tanks break open and freeze him. Thus the world is saved once again by James Bond.
*Whew* now that that's out of the way down to the game review;
What can I say about Goldeneye 007 that hasn't already been said before? It's fun, it's challenging, it's one of the best party games since Guitar Hero, now I know what you're thinking; "Party Game?" yes this game supports up to 4 players in multi-player, it's a great game to play with friends and you could play as characters from the movie and then there was the alleged "All Bonds" mode where you could play as; Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton, but that idea never saw the light of day. If you were a kid or adult in the 90s and you had an N64 and Goldeneye, you were on top of the gaming world! Now let's break it down shall we?
GRAPHICS- Nothing really to scream at, the actors/actresses in the movie do use their likeness in the game, but they're kinda blocky, but it was 1997 and it was the N64, which at the time were the best, even though nowadays they can't hold a candle to today's video games.
SOUND- Again nothing to scream at, there are no voice overs in the game, all characters talk in text boxes...which kinda sucks because it was 1997 and video games did have voice acting but I guess Pierce Brosnan and the cast were either busy or didn't want to reprise their roles. The music is phenomenal, it's some of the best game music I've ever heard.
REPLAY VALUE- Through the roof, it's 2010 and I first bought Goldeneye in 1997. I still have my N64 and I still play Goldeneye 007 to this very day, but I always play multi-player with friends.
CHALLENGE- Honestly Goldeneye is pretty challenging as there are 3 different difficulty settings; "Agent" "Secret Agent" and "00 Agent" each difficulty provides more goals to complete said mission making the game a whole helluva lot tougher.
FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE GAME:
Honestly, you cannot go wrong with Goldeneye, it's fun, it's challenging and also spawned another successful game with the same engine, we know it as; "Perfect Dark" I love Goldeneye and I will never stop playing it, so if you haven't played it... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! GET OUT FROM UNDER THAT ROCK AND PLAY IT... or emulate it on an N64 emulator. Chuck Norris gives Goldeneye a 9 out of 10
