Magus, he's not even on the list. :(
Magus, he's not even on the list. :(
Well since he isn't really the main villian I didn't put him on here. Remember he is a controlable character. His motives are just a bit misunderstood. He is a great character though. I'd team up Crono, Magus and Robo to fight Lavos.

It was a tough choice but I went with Shang Tsung. He's one of the evilest bastards ever created and no one can trust him, not even the evil gods of Mortal Kombat. That and he keeps dieing and coming back. I guess hell doesn't want him either.

I voted For old Shang Tsung as well there , He is my favorite player and he has always consistantly lived through all of the threequels forquels and so on , plus he can steal your soul , hitler can't mess with that ! Dracula has a close second though ,...

Shang Tsung also took over the world on a couple of occasions and he ruled the outworld realm. Not to have a nerd off about it but Shang is at least equal with Kefkas accomplishments.

You know who's an under appreciated villain?
Emperor Mateus from Final Fantasy II.
He successfully took over hell. I don't think Kefka could have done that.

If Kefka had godlike powers then it's entirely possible, imo.
samejamesbond
01-29-2010, 10:38 PM
Let me correct myself,
Mateus took over Hell AND Heaven at the same time.
And proceded to take over the world of Final Fantasy II.
Only Firion stoped him. Doesn't that make Firion the manliest final fantasy character?

No you don't get it, Mateus' soul split in two.
He then became Satan:

And god (like Kefka) at the same time:

If that's true then what happens to him when he dies? I thought he went to hell so he could be reborn for the next game. Maybe I should read up on my Castlevania lore.
In Bram Stoker, Dracula cursed God and sold his soul transforming into the Count Dracula. I could be a bit off but that's how I remember it. In the end it just depends on what version of Dracula you read. Some stories say he sold his soul. Others say he was born like that. He's a servant sent from Satan. The lore changes depending on who's telling it.

I know it's kinda stupid but now I'm genuinely interested in figuring this out. I know I've read books where the antagonist wins but I can't recall any games where that happened, and I've played a lot of RPGs.
I remember my dad telling me about some old Mexican Western where the bad guy wins at the end, then turns to look at the camera and says "I bet you didn't expect that!" in spanish of course.
What about in a game where you play the antagonist like AVP?

Yeah.. Dracula has DEATH himself as his B*^(# slave.. power wise hes a mosnter as well.. you almost need the vampire killer And or to have his blood line. ((Which technically the belmonts have as well.. Seeing how Trever belmont is sonia and Alucard's son.*) all the characters to beat dracula are either related to him by blood or have the epic VK. After all, Like I said earleir, Dracy has Death as a lacky! You dont get much more bad azz then that!. Hell to finaly kill him off the had to seal his castle and soul into a bloody ECLIPSE! THen he still got reincarnated as Soma Cruz! No matter what you do Drac just WONt die...
Adn KefKa.. Even as a GOD who destroys the world and gains ultimate power.. and he STILL got his butt kicked by a couple mortals... either those guys are somethign or.. Kefka is the weakest god ever..
*see castlevania legends for that... regardless of whatever stupid time line thing Kojima does Sonia is canon, theres no way she isn't canon..
Adn KefKa.. Even as a GOD who destroys the world and gains ultimate power.. and he STILL got his butt kicked by a couple mortals... either those guys are somethign or.. Kefka is the weakest god ever..
..
Those guys were really something.
Is there any video game villain who didn't get defeated by an unassuming protagonist? In Out of this World you just run away. The evil aliens continue on with their slave mastering duties. In the unofficial sequel you destroy their operation. There isn't a single villain though, just evil aliens and they fail in their task of catching you.
In Dune you can play the bad guys and win.
You could say Donkey Kong won because he went on to be his own successful protagonists in many games and jump man (the real protagonist of Donkey Kong) never had another game.
I don't think there are any games where the character you are controlling can not win. So for the villain to truly win you have to be the villain.
Damb! Dracula is giving my boy Kefka a run for his money.

I really think Gilgamesh(FFV) should have gotten onto this list instead of Lavos. And Jafaar(Super Prince of Persia) would cream Bloody Malth.
Yeah, could have put Gilgamesh in there, but then again X Death is his boss so he'd be the bigger villian of the two. I just didn't want to put two villians from the FF series so I picked baddest of the bunch.
I never played Super Prince of Persia, so I didn't even know Jafaar is the villian there. I was also trying to look for original games created villians instead of movie inspired game villians. A Final Fantasy sequel was unheard of until recently. Instead of re-using the same villian, new ones were created along with new heros and worlds and what not. I think that was great because you really didn't need a sequel to any FF game. A great story really ends when the credits roll.
Maybe Dracula needs a really bad ass hero who could actually finish the job. Does that answer your question?

Well it is based on the Arabian Nights, and you can't have Arabian Nights without Jaffar.
IMO Jaffar has one of the best final boss fights of all time. As opposed to most bosses where the boss is much more powerful, in this case Jaffar fights you with his sword, and if you've collected a lot of health boosts, it's actually a fair fight. This is one of the few final bosses I consider to actually be a "duel". No fancy jumping or sliding is going to keep you from getting hurt, only your skill can help you.

Come on, you'd think this debate would be settled. We're trying to solve who is more bad ass, Kefka or Dracula. Although, having Liquid and Solid Snake duel sounds interesting.
Ok then I say Kefka would beat Dracula and make him his bitch.
Dracula has super strenght, can transform into a bat, has minions at his disposal and has some magical abilities. Granted he is immortal, but he can be defeated time after time by the Belmont clan.
Kefka has tons of spells ranging from healing to attacking spells, has plenty of minions to throw at you, unleashed a bunch of dragons and Deathgaze, and is practically a god.
Dracula was defeated by one person from the same clan every time he appears.
Kefka was defeated by a team of 14 with the help of many espers.
I'd say Kefka wins.

No, because first off, you get the same thing in Final Fantasy VIII. I myself watched that final boss fight and that guy'd tear Kefka a new one on his own. Besides, there are bosses out there that only take one person to beat.

I agree Ultimecia is a monster final boss, she's the most unapreciated villain in all of gaming.
She could only be defeated by the manliest FF character of course.

Ultimecia would be someone who could KO Kefka in a fight. So the number of people it takes to ill someone is not a quality needed to be bad ass.

Yeah that's great and all, but I am only talking about villians that appear in retro games here in RU. Ultimecia comes out for playstation, so she doens't count here.
So the number of people it takes to ill kill someone is not a quality needed to be bad ass.
That's a matter of opinion. I believe its a good quality to be considered bad ass.

I'll give you that as far as Ultimecia goes. But if the number of people it took to beat a bad guy was worth something, there'd be no real bad ass villain. I'm sure there's someone out there who took more guys to beat than Kefka.

All of his powers came from Espers and the Warring Triad. In my opinion, when you take away those abilities you're just left with a cruel and whiny general who dresses like a clown. Not to say that most villains aren't notable when you take away their power, but something should be left.

His laugh is still pretty entertaining.

I'll agree with you there. A duel is the way to prove who is more skilled. Hey, Liquid and Solid Snake duke it out aswell now that I think about it.
They do in MGS and MGS4.
I just didn't like the fact that I was controling Raiden...I wanted to be Snake.
Raiden was stupid, but at least he was athletic.

What kind of bad ass throws a fit when his enemies get away?
I only actually liked Kefka after he becomes a god and explains how he plans to just destroy everything out of boredom. But then I thought how essentially the same thing would happen to anyone who became a god. Still, towards the end he gets some impressive dialogue as a villain and his theme songs are great. It's kind of a halfsies feeling towards him.

I imagine most do. That's hardly any sort of retort. I grew to like Kefka after he wiped out Doma Castle. Loved him after he killed Gen Leo.
What kind of bad ass villian can't cross running water? Can't enter someone's home without being invited? Can be deterred by a little cross? Can be killed from a little sunburn?
Kefka could make it rain holy water. He has nothing to fear from some little peon with more weaknesses then strengths.

Doesn't really matter where he got the power from, what matters is that he does have it. Take Superman for instance, he's only powerful because of the sun the earth has. In his home planet, the sun there has no such effect. Take away the sun and he's just a wimp in glasses.

Give me a break. All bad guys hate it when you take their power away. For your information, according to DC, there are other solar systems with the kind of suns Superman needs for his powers to work.

That's true. Still, Superman has his wits about him most of the time. Most bad guys who don't are morons. Kefka would be one of those who would use their heads when their powers failed them.

that's great, but what help would Superman do us in another solar system anyways.

Okay, I'll grant that he's no help in another solar system. Still, it's pretty sad when a bad guy with no real powers like Eggman, who HackNSlash insists on calling Robotnik, tries to compete with either Kefka or Dracula. Eggman's a loser. I'd have Kefka kill him outright.

Not that I'm aware of. Anyway, Dracula's persistent in the face of death. Hard to find anyone outside of Kefka who matches that determination.

Kefka needed 12 people to kill him, while
Dracula is killed by 1 Belmont each time.
12 > 1

Note you said each time. That implies a long running feud between Dracula and the Belmonts. Every time Dracula comes up a Belmont is there to stop him. Kefka dies only once.
Ok so Dracula beat Kefka at failing multiple times. Woohoo!
One would think that he could get it right eventually, but he proves time and time again that he just doens't have what it takes to beat the Belmonts.

jozman, the problem with that is no villain is ever allowed to win. As proof that success eludes all, let's talk about Dracula. While he gets back up, he always loses. Kefka is no different. How would it look for any good guy to lose on a permanent basis?
It would make for a great twist in the end. I would like the bad guy to win every now and then. Keeps you wondering who will win.
fenrir1887
02-07-2010, 04:54 PM
Really now. The problem is most don't understand how that formula works. The villain has a short run of success until the hero turns around, recovers from the shock, and beats him badly. Unless your bad guy was actually an anti-hero, I don't see that happening.
Yeah I know how it works. I'm just saying that it would be cool if the villian wins from time to time. A game where there is no happy ending. Or maybe have the hero win, but in the game ending the villian comes back and kills the hero setting it up for a part two.

Ah, but keep in mind: One with no powers, cannot lose his powers.
what if you lose your "will power?" MUST. NOT...EAT CHEETO!

True, then you wouldn't fight, but that is by choice, not by inability.
I just thought of another bad ass villain:
http://www.angelfire.com/games2/sk8ergamer/mgspics/mantis.jpg
Psycho Mantis would own anyone on that list, he has mind powers and can anticipate any move to be made.
Yeah that's an awsome power. Did you ever try to beat Mantis without using the player two controler? I hit him maybe twice.

I got mega-raped when I tried, of course I was pretty young when I tried.
I'm sure one can beat Mantis at his own game, but it would take lots of practice and patience with a ton of luck. I figure that if you can hit him once you c.an hit him again and again. It's just really fricking hard

Hey, Mantis might pose a difficulty, though. I suppose you'd have to work against the desire to smash your game long enough to beat him.
