External Hard Drive Security Issues?

Man I hate computers. So I have all my data plugged into a laptop with Vista on it, which I have never used. I try to open My Documents and it says I don't have the security to do that. So I googled that and figured out how to get into the folder, but now the files in the folder won't work. All my raps are notepad files, and I try to open one and it simply says "Access Denied". Also, my mp3 files won't play, and in general things are not working correctly. Can anyone (Kong) help me out here?!

are you logged into the user admin?

Try this. You may need to be logged in as admin to do it.
Open my computer
Right click your external drive
click properties
click security
click advanced
click edit
click add
type your current windows user name - the one you are logged in as. If you click the start button it should be listed in the top right under the picture.
click check names. It should correct it for you.
click ok
click ok
click ok
click ok
try accessing your files again.

Also if you create and log into an account on the new computer with same user name and password as on the old computer then it would probably work.

Is giving myself security for the drive supposed to take a long time and go through all my files individually?

Wor. Just making sure. It seems to be working, but once in a while it will tell me access is denied to a file. They seem to be unimportant files so far so I'm just skipping them.

Didn't work. It spent all that time going though my files and still won't play my mp3s or open up my reason files or text documents.

I have 2 hard drives that I am having this problem with. One is the hard drive from my PC that Windows crashed on, so I am going to back it all up, format it and reinstall my OS. The other one...I may or may not throw out of a window.

While backing up my data I get random errors on certain files that I don't know what are. It's also telling me it is going to take 22 days to back up my 80 gig drive.

So Kong, I still don't have access to a lot of stuff I need on both hard drives. I would make a user name and password that is the same, the only problem is I don't know what that would be. I guess I could try Owner or whatever and see if that works. Do you have any more suggestions?
