View Full Version : Wii vs. 360 and PS3

Topic clarification- This topic was created when an off topic discussion got split from it's original discussion.
The dpad on the 360 is terrible,
Terrible is a little strong don't you think? It's a little awkward to reach but I use it in a few games and it's fine once you get used to it. The situation reminds me of the N64 controller.

I love the Wii but it's not capable of the same things as PS3 or 360. Not just graphics although that is terrible in comparison.
How come most ports are remade to fit the Wii? They have to make a special version most times because the Wii just can't handle it.
Also it has a joke of an online system and that is the future of gaming. I know that's hard for some of you guys but it's true.
So besides the novel controller setup all it's got going for it is the name Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are developing their own motion controls and even VR. I hope the Nintendo brand name is enough to keep them in the console market.
Either way I didn't want to debate this I was just making a comparison to the N64.

I somehow missed this post. Oh well I am in a writing mood for once. As Mushu said in Mulan... "Light me!"
They make a special version because the Wii is unique in controls. i mean the Wii mote despite it easily rolling over, is very very confortable, I don't think it's a GFX thing at all, maybe the other company's focus more on GFX than gameplay, but Nintendo is going strong and is the best, an example of a powerhouse is the New Mario Bros. Wii. Pure Genius, who the hell cares about GFX anyways, I don't.
I feel the online system is great and safe for children. I would rather use the Wii system than go on something about Xbox and someone ask about my balls.
So, Nintendo comes up with the idea and they steal it? Then you rave they are best? That's stupid. I hate mimicing systems, and Nintendo finally pulled a good system out and you bash it? Is this just because you can't hook yours up?
Well, you caught me in a typing mood night, so debate on~

I'm not oblivious by any means. I know the point is they have a different style and they cater to a different demographic. Sony and Microsoft are working to bridge the gap between them and that market. If that happens the weak little Wii won't stand a chance. Nintendo is avoiding the competition for now but they need something more to stay ahead.
Besides all that I fully supported all the Nintendo systems until the Wii. I still like it and continue to buy games for it but it's still a weaker system that relies on a novelty and a brand name. There is no special nintendo magic I'm failing to understand.
@Tails- They make a special version because the Wii is unique in controls. No they make a special version because the Wii can't handle the normal version. There's no debating the Wii just isn't as powerful as the other two. If you only buy a Wii you will miss out on tons of great games that the PS3 and 360 share.
I don't think it's a GFX thing at all, maybe the other company's focus more on GFX than gameplay, but Nintendo is going strong and is the best, an example of a powerhouse is the New Mario Bros. Wii. Pure Genius, who the hell cares about GFX anyways, I don't.Yeah graphics is one obvious thing but besides that the Wii is just weaker overall. It cannot handle much beyond what GC could handle.
I feel the online system is great and safe for children. I would rather use the Wii system than go on something about Xbox and someone ask about my balls. The Wii online is functional but other than that it's the most basic, boring thing I've ever used. Good for kids and parents who don't know any better I guess.
Btw Xbox and PS3 have this new feature called Mute for all those meanie heads who might offend you. Also young kids shouldn't be on the Xbox mic anyways right? They can't chat on the Wii online right?
So, Nintendo comes up with the idea and they steal it? Then you rave they are best? That's stupid. I hate mimicing systems, and Nintendo finally pulled a good system out and you bash it? Is this just because you can't hook yours up?Keep reaching. There is no stealing going on here. New technology comes out and everyone scrambles to catch up. Now it's up to Nintendo to adapt or go the way of Sega.

Sony and Microsoft are failures. Sony can't put up decent hardware for games (psp almost broke) and Microsoft I haven't really played but they have overheating problems. The only thing going for Microsoft is shooters, and Sony RPG's. Nintendo actually does good games likes platformers, RPG's all around the board. So I feel they will stay ahead.
As soon as the N64 hit I really really wasn't a fan of it, same with the GCN. I can name less than 20 games combined that I liked. But look at the Wii good games ranging from Mario bros Wii to Punch out. They bring back the oldies while Sony/Microsoft are focusing on GFX. To me that's failure.
Nintendo is great now, I hope they keep this up. The only complain I got is the controllers require batteries instead of an option to hook it up while playing.

Btw guys you keep losing perspective here. I love Nintendo and the majority of what they make. I take issue with the Wii because it just seems like they couldn't make a true next gen system so they tacked on a novelty that became popular because of their brand name and marketing.
Some stuff is good but it's obvious the system is not for me. I barely use the motion controller anyways. When I play MK I use a GC controller.

I am no fan boy, at all. I don't like Microsoft period. Sony I can muster because I like some of the games. However I do like the Wii because of the games, the features, etc.
You take issue for them not making a next true gen? They revolutionized gaming. I mean, the controller is sweet, minus the draw back I said earlier. Even if that was a different company who made it I would think it was sweet and support it. Nintendo makes systems with care.
The only time I DO NOT use the Motion Controller is Sonic Riders too, it pisses me off. Other than that, I use it. However when I play MK I use the Nun-chuck thingy.
I just saw you replied (couldn't you just add another post? I missed it).
What games? It might not have GFX power but PS3/360 do but have heating problems.
So? It depends on the games. I don't care what they can handle or not.
Meanie heads? LMAO. The Wii is safer, less problems with someone trying to curse you out without muting. Less trouble.
Nintendo is doing fine. They are doing great and 360/PS3 are just jumping on the bandwagon.
P.S. I think we went way off topic..
Clarifier: My opinion is uninformed. I know almost nothing about modern gaming I thought I would jump into the debate anyways. My opinion is unbiased though, I am not a fan boy or hater of any of these companies.
Dudebro is right, the future of gaming is online multiplayer.
Motion controllers or novelties. They will stick around but they will not make or break a system. Any future system without perfect multilayer support will fail.
I watched the tech demos and I think MS and Sony will have superior motion controllers very soon. They already have superior gfx and online play. After the controllers are updated Wii will be a technically inferior system in all regards.
But Nintendo has secret weapons.
1. Nintendo has the most famous first party titles.
2. Nintendo realized that it is no longer about the most impressive specs, realistic graphics and 3D worlds. It is about gameplay. Always should have been. They are going back to the roots and this is so important. The others have not caught on. I haven't liked games since 1990 but now even I want to buy a DS and Wii.
3. Nintendo is targeting all ages trying to get their adult fan boys to pass the tradition on to the next generation. Wise business decision. Something that isn't really an option for the other companies.
They make a special version because the Wii is unique in controls. i mean the Wii mote despite it easily rolling over, is very very confortable, I don't think it's a GFX thing at allI think it is a gfx/processor thing.
So, Nintendo comes up with the idea and they steal it?That isn't a new idea. I came up with the idea when I was 8. The idea was in the power glove commercial, if not in the actual power glove. Motion controllers were on the tech horizon, even if Nintendo didn't make one the other companies still would have. It probably pushed them to move faster but it was going to happen either way.
Sony and Microsoft are working to bridge the gap between them and that market.I agree but see my secret weapons above.
Now it's up to Nintendo to adapt or go the way of Sega. They could have 20 years of pure failure and still survive on their name, deep pockets (including advertisements), and first party titles and nothing else. They can't lose those things and don't need anything else to avoid Sega's fate.
Microsoft I haven't really played but they have overheating problems.I have asked this several times and have never got a good answer. How is any game console better than a gaming PC? The only answer I could come up with is they are specially designed for the task and so work perfectly for the task. In other words you don't have to worry about things like over heating. That sounds like it is not true though.
The only complain I got is the controllers require batteries instead of an option to hook it up while playing. That is a stupid design mistake.

This is a lot longer than I expected(that's what she said right?).
I don't like Microsoft period. Sony I can muster because I like some of the games.
Well that's just dumb. Are you saying you only like sony because of the very few exclusives that never get ported to 360 or Wii? What is it just Rachet and Clank or something else that's an overhyped graphical update of a PS2 game?
You take issue for them not making a next true gen? They revolutionized gaming. I mean, the controller is sweet, minus the draw back I said earlier. Even if that was a different company who made it I would think it was sweet and support it. Nintendo makes systems with care.Accessories do not make a system next gen. Nintendo was clever at first but now they have to show they can stay in the game.
It might not have GFX power but PS3/360 do but have heating problems.I have no idea about PS3s issues but I've never heard anything about overheating.
Microsoft admitted their fault, extended all warranties and offered as many free repairs as needed to systems made before they fixed the problem. Oh well they screwed up and did the right thing about it. You gonna demonize them forever about it? The majority of victims of the overheating problem staying with the 360, what's that tell you?
Meanie heads? LMAO. The Wii is safer, less problems with someone trying to curse you out without muting. Less trouble.
By safer you mean no actual online voice chat or socialization of any kind. No thanks I'm an adult and I can deal with some idiots cursing every now and then. I've used both online systems many times so I know what I'm talking about. The Wii has the worst multiplayer and there's no debate about it.
Btw when I said meanie heads I was mocking you're apparently thin skin.
Nintendo is doing fine. They are doing great and 360/PS3 are just jumping on the bandwagon.Deny it all you want but Nintendo can't coast on it's name forever. What are you going to say when Nintendos next console comes out and it's fully online like the current next gen systems? Will you think Nintendo is jumping the bandwagon?
But Nintendo has secret weapons.
Not very secret to be honest with you. Like you said though you're uninformed about this.
They could have 20 years of pure failure and still survive on their name, deep pockets (including advertisements), and first party titles and nothing else. They can't lose those things and don't need anything else to avoid Sega's fate.I'm not going to argue about something unknowable like this but I really disagree with you.
I have asked this several times and have never got a good answer. How is any game console better than a gaming PC? The only answer I could come up with is they are specially designed for the task and so work perfectly for the task. In other words you don't have to worry about things like over heating. That sounds like it is not true though.I think it's partially about ease of use and cost compared to PCs. Most gamers I know either don't own a PC of their own or they have almost no idea how to use it besides Facebook and email.
Another issue is most console games aren't released on PC and vice versa. This might be a deliberate thing by Microsoft and other companies but who knows.
what do you guys mean that online multiplayer is the future of gaming? are you trying to say that every game will be online multiplayer? i dont think thats true at all, they might all be hooked up to online score boards or have some acheivments or whatever, but theres no way that its gonna all be online multiplayer. look at the sales of nintendo products, clearly the public doesnt care.
Have you been living under a rock the last ten years or so? It's all about being online and connected. Why else would people be buying cellphones for hundreds of dollars so they can have it online and everything else they don't need?
Microsoft and Sony are trying to make their consoles into multimedia devices to avoid being pigeon holed. They just recently added the ability to connect directly to facebook, why do you think that is?
Also online is the new trend with all games, not just multiplayer games. Single player RPGs have all kinds of updates(free and fee) and they update games the same way a PC does if there's a bug or glitch they need to patch. There's no denying it's the future. Nintendo can cling to it's niche for so long before they have to look for something else to prop them up.
And yeah, this is way offtopic. I wasn't going to continue it but I don't like leaving things unanswered when they're directed at me. I'm only going to reply to things about this post, besides the OP of course.
-=Threads split.=-
I think it's partially about ease of use
You could make the pc as easy to use as a console. Have a button you press that loads it up in "game mode" where it behaves just like a console. Another button you press that loads it in "PC Mode" Game Mode could be a solid state OS the same as a Nintendo is so the user can never screw it up.
and cost compared to PCs.
Game consoles intentionally lose money because they know they will make the money back on the games. Something similar can be worked out where you buy 10 games you get a pc coupon or games are cheaper or something, it could be worked out. It would be cheaper to buy a powerful game PC than to buy a regular pc and a game console which is what most gamers do.
Most gamers I know either don't own a PCGamers didn't own a game console until they were produced and marketed.
Another issue is most console games aren't released on PCFixable.
I think you read my question as "in the current market why do people buy a console when they could just by a pc". My question was why design a console in the first place when PC already exist and are much better suited for the job (in my slightly but not fully educated opinion).
Also an xbox is fully capable of being a pc, why isn't it. If it is a fear of screwing it up the same as most people screw up a pc, you could have it in locked down mode where it was capable of being like a pc but never saved changes. Every time you turned it on it would be the same settings as the first time you plugged it in. Same as my "game mode" idea above.

Ninty has realised the future of gaming. They understand constantly competeing for "most powerful" console is a fool's game.
Nintendo has revolutionized the gaming industry. Because of the Wii I've actually played a game with my wife, son, and mother all at the same time.
Gaming is about fun, not about extra shiney graphics, trophies, and online communities filled with obnoxious preteens.
Also, NATAL will fail. Here's a quote from someone who's much more educated about the specs than I am. Bear in mind he's a self-proclaimed Microsoft fanboy and Wii hater.
Natal Will Bomb
Right now you’re thinking “But you said the Wii would bomb and it didn’t!” And yes, I was wrong about that. However the surprise success of the Wii definitely affects my prediction here, although there is some argument for me being wrong again. Some thoughts:
Anyone that wanted a Wii-like control already bought a Wii. This is one of those “2 types of people in the world” arguments. Either you want to do Yoga on a piece of plastic or you want to see how many bad guys you can shoot in 3 minutes. Nintendo tries to have hardcore games and the 360 tries to be casual, but let’s be honest here. 2 different systems, 2 different audiences.
Many people with a 360 already own a Wii and never play it. “Wow, this will be fun at parties!” “Wow my girlfriend will like this!” “Wow it sort of replicates a golf swing!” We’ve heard it all before, then it just becomes one more thing you have to dust off. Did you know unless you turn the Wii completely OFF (red light) it keeps running? I wonder if Al Gore knows how many dormant Wii’s are pointlessly wasting electricity across America.
Living rooms are too small. Ever see that Natal video where each member of the stupid family plays the thing? Wish I had a living room that big! I bet a lot of people do. Using your cell phone or digital camera (http://retrouprising.com/#), trying taking a photo from the perspective of your TV of your living room. Can you fit all of a person standing up in the frame? If so, how much can they move forward or back before they’re off frame? Unless the Natal has a stupidly wide angle lens (http://retrouprising.com/#) (which would adversely affect accuracy / convergence) I’m not sure how well it will work in “the real world”. Thus…
It won’t work as well as you think / they say. The technology of the Natal is all software, since the unit is simply 2 cameras, an IR light and a microphone. Thus it’s up to the software to interpret the motion. Which the 360 could excel at, since it’s far more advanced than a Wii. So to some extent that would future-proof it - new algorithms could extend the capabilities, instead of having to physically add on a WiiMotion Plus. Still, whatever you think it might be able to do it won’t. Instead of piecing together clues “Minority Report” style we’ll be kicking virtual balls around.
It’s a blatant Wii rip off. People are pretty stupid but they’ll figure this one out. Unless it has some killer app like Wii Sports (it won’t) there will be no reason for people to be interested, besides hard core 360 fanboys. But will they even? I love the 360, I think the Wii is a POS, and there’s no way I’d buy this stupid thing unless it was super cheap. But unfortunately…
It won’t be super cheap. It’s two (probably low resolution) cameras with a microphone on a single USB bus! Now how much would you pay? Probably more than you’d think. The 360 Vision camera is reasonable priced (even for a 360 device) because people have a general idea what web cams (http://retrouprising.com/#) cost. But this is new! It’s amazing! Some have predicted the Natal being $75 or even $50, but if it costs a penny less than $99.99 (includes game) I’ll be shocked.
Microsoft’s past winning strategy of “Rip Off then Perfect” isn’t what it used to be. I am a die-hard Microsoft fan, wouldn’t use a Mac if you paid me to, but I will readily admit that Microsoft basically “borrows” ideas from others and perfects them for a mass market. (Although to be fair Apple ripped off the GUI from the Xerox’s Alto Spark computer) The general consensus is MS wins with the 3rd version of a product. (IE is a good example of this). However lately they’ve been less successful at this, the Zune being a prime example. Even with a far superior music store (let’s face it iTunes (http://retrouprising.com/#) sucks) better tech, competitive prices and insane battery life on the Zune HD they still lag behind. Zune HD basically can’t win because it will always and forever be behind on the iPod for apps. I have an iPod Touch. iTunes is slow as hell, it syncs very stupidly, the music lists are lame, you have to pay for firmware updates (inexcusable!) but the apps are awesome. Zune can’t beat iPod for the same reason Mac can’t beat Windows - once 90% of the market has invested in something there’s no turning them back.
Natal functionality in normal games will be as stupid, limited and tacked on as Sixaxis was. Ever play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune? Great game, but the grenade throwing BLEW CHUNKS. You were basically required to use the Sixaxis to lob grenades - which was never accurate of course - and it was broken to the point where eventually you didn’t even bother with ‘nades. Then of course there’s Lair, look how well that worked! Uncharted 2 dumped Sixaxis altogether and the world cheered. Why should we expect the Natal to be any different?
By time the Natal comes out the Wii fad will be even more “over. - ‘Nuff said. I’m sure they didn’t have enough software ready (if any) but why didn’t they release Natal Christmas ‘09? Hell, just the ball demo even. People bought the Wii for 1 game, why not this?
Oh but the Natal lets you browse movies by waving your hand around and saying “Play Movie”. Because that’s exactly how I want to browse for movies, thanks. Heaven forbid you just use the controller or perhaps this. (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360universalremote/default.htm) Granted the Media Remote requires the aiming accuracy of a Navy Seals sharpshooter but hey - it works.
One thing cool about the Natal is approximately 3 seconds after it is released someone will convert it into a 3D camera for general recording purposes. Nice.
By extension I don’t think anyone’s going to fall for the PlayStation “Wand” thing either. Both it and the Natal are a day late and a dollar short. Stick to what you consoles do best - triple A games, great online and community.
Tenser, +1

Besides a select few games(Moster Hunter 3, Mario Galaxy), playing a Wii to me is like playing old NES games. There's not much to it, it's fun for a little bit, and then 15 minutes later I am done.
That's why I prefer my 360. I can get immersed in a game and play it for hours and hours.
A good 360 game feels like a game. Most Wii games feel like a toy.

I happen to be brilliant, and therefore can spend the hours I would spend studying playing video games if I so choose.
If I can't sit down and play a game for at least 45 minutes before wanting to do something else (assuming I have the time to do so) then it isn't that great of a game to me.
And I am of course speaking strictly of modern games. Old games are not on the same standard, and I like playing retro games for short amounts of time.

Tenser, derailing the topic is getting us nowhere.
Back on topic, I'd have to say aside from Drake's Uncharted, MGS4, God of War III, and LittleBigPlanet;
the PS3 exclusives are less appealing than the Xbox 360's exclusives. (To me anyway)
And the Wii may have nostalgic flair on most titles, they're often shorter than other console games.
I'd rate it: Xbox 360, Wii, PS3

Most of the games in the Xbox or PS3 library that I would be interested in are available for the PC.
Most games for the PS360 aren't even in high def also. The majority are only 30 or 60fps and run at 480p (which is also what Wii runs at). HD runs at a minimum of 720p. Even if they did runs at HD 720p it's still not BRD/HD movie quality which is usually around 1060p. The only real limit to a console's capabilities is it's graphics processor. The average PC at Walmart is more powerful than the PS3 and 360 combined. Hell, my year old comp can run 1280p video files without the fan even kicking on.
Point is, discussing console graphics capabilities online is like talking about mopeds while in a Harley shop.

Just saying...
January 14, 2010 - The NPD Group, which tracks videogame software sales, released its December 2009 totals on Thursday and Nintendo eclipsed all competitors in what has proven to be Wii's biggest month since the console released three years ago.
Last week, Nintendo said that its internal numbers indicated it had sold more than three million Wii systems in December. (http://wii.ign.com/articles/105/1058224p1.html) Well, it turns out those numbers were not only right, but conservative. According to NPD, the Big N managed epic sales of 3.81 million Wii consoles for the month. Additionally, the publisher sold through 3.3 million DS handhelds. Combined, the two platforms accounted for more than 7.1 million in unit sales.
The nearest competitor was Sony's PlayStation 3 with 1.36 million units sold, narrowly edging out Microsoft's 360 with 1.31 million systems bought.
"Wii, Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi combined to sell more than 7 million units in the month of December alone," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Clearly there is overwhelming consumer demand for fun games, motion controls and value. This remarkable hardware sales surge presents a tremendous software opportunity for Nintendo and its third-party partners as we head into 2010."
Obviously, Wii sales were catapulted by both a recent $50 price reduction -- Wii retails for $199, down from $249 -- and the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, far and away the best-selling game of the month.

In the next 2 or 3 months the Wii will actually pass the NES as the third highest selling console worldwide.
(as of 1/1/10)
NES- 61.91 million

Well that is an accomplishment but it's not a surprise. A new hyped up(deservedly so) mario game is bound to sell out fast. A new COD game sells out but many gamers aren't buying them anymore because it's not much different from previous games. I only bought it because my brothers and friends play it.
Also worth noting is 360 and PS3 have many more games being released that are hyped up. Wii only has New SMBs currently getting any attention, unless you count a rehash of WiiFit. If COD was the only big game atm it'd be selling in a similar way most likely.

You can't claim NSMBW sold a lot of units because it's really the only Wii game selling. Wii has five out of the top ten in game sales. It's certainly not the only game selling.
Dudebro
01-14-2010, 10:57 PM
Of course it's not the only one selling but it is the only one that's getting attention from gamers and the media*. Obviously it's partly due to the name and reputation of the franchise but it's also because it's a damn good game.
*I don't mean well informed gamers or media, I mean the majority of people.
COD is up against several big name games, of course it's sales are going to be affected. Also like I said it's not very innovative. That and not all 360/ps3 gamers like FPS(yes it's true!). Almost everyone loves a mario game, it's hard to even come close to it's hype.

the 2 biggest reasons i wanted a PS3 was 1. the bluray 2. killzone 2 and god of war 3. I have never played a xbox. We had a wii here for 4 months, played it one time, and threw it in the bedroom. It just did not interest me. I always wanted to try out pc gaming, was scared off by the price and people always saying the constant upgrading that needs to be done.

It's really not as bad as all that. I'd say you get about the same lifespan with a PC as a typical console. Difference is you don't have to get a new PC(usually) just need graphics card, more memory, w/e. Consoles become useless unless you really like those old games you got. A PC will always play old PC games.
According to that linked article Wii Sports, SMB and Duckhunt are on the top five for most sold. I assume that counts the copies that came with the consoles right? It must unless a lot of morons are buying Wii Sports. Seems a little misleading to me.
I assume that counts the copies that came with the consoles right? No way Duck Hunt made the list without counting bundled games. Which I think makes the list fail. It doesn't tell you how many games were sold on their own merit.

Yeah, but only 3 of them are for Wii. And one of those is Wii Play, which only sold so well because it came with a Wii remote. And one is Wii Fit which is barely a game.

Destructoid - What Wii gaming is like for me (http://www.destructoid.com/what-wii-gaming-is-like-for-me-160346.phtml)
Somewhere around April a few years ago, my wife and I drove to a local Toys R Us to pick up a then elusive Wii, with no luck. A serendipitous call to Target yielded a lead and a quick 15 minute drive, ending in a dramatic rolling dropoff with my daring wife at the wheel, resulted in the acquisition of 1 Wii, a copy of Wii Play, SSX Blur and the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Fast forward to present day, and Nintendo's relatively low-tech wonder sits attached to the low-tech living room TV. Its the winter months and, in typical game cycle fashion, there's plenty of interesting things to play. Most of them on the PS3 and 360.
As it happens, I don't play on my Wii on a very regular basis at the moment. Without getting too personal, I'm actually using my HD systems more for their media capabilities this week in particular. Sometimes, gaming just isnt in me, and catching up on some good movies and TV shows is a nice way to unwind. The Wii, where it is now, takes a particular and determined effort to log time on. I've got to divorce myself from my computer entirely, do the extra few button presses to engage the video on my VCR, through which the console is running. Consider also that my wife enjoys her evening shows on that same TV, and it turns out that for me to play on my Wii is probably the most inconvenient gaming experience that I have currently setup for use.
But once I'm there, its pretty much the best thing ever.
A good Wii session usually involves a real-for-real disc based game. Lately, its Wii Sports Resort and A Boy and his Blob. While the cool thing to say is that I'm all about choppin' fools with the excellent Motion+ swordplay games, I'm a sucker for table tennis. I tend to get in about 5 matches, with the AI and my skill now at a pretty good mix. I've traded a good number of wins in single player and the playis pretty effortless from a control-to-output perspective.
A Boy and his Blob is a rental, which is a good percentage of the new Wii games I play lately. Opting for more traditional controls, this game really takes the platform and simply makes a good time of it. Rare even in the hallowed decks of XBLA, the hand drawn and fluid artstyle is especially gorgeous. Maybe, being on a 10-15 year old TV helps me not realize that this console can't pump out the intense shaders and thick resolutions of my other consoles. This and many other games on the platform are decidedly not about pushing shaders, but rather about the craft of making a unique and special game experience.
Once I've had my fill of a full game for the night, I've usually backed out back to the Wii Menu. By no means as efficient or practical for the organization of large amounts of data, the interface is clean, and pretty much evocative to the prospect of actually playing games. My main page of channels hold some of my favorite games that I'm happy to have ready to play in moments of turning my console on. River City Ransom, Super (FREAKING) Dodgeball, and every Mega Man game they'll let me download. I can jump right into a frozen state Mega Man III, chip away however unsuccessfully at Shadowman's evolved stage, and jump right back out to some other quick game session.
And there's probably the best thing going for my Wii. Right there on a little SDcard are about 2 dozen other games that I've downloaded for the system. After tolerating some extra loading times I'm primed for some really satisfying gaming: WiiWare downloads.
I've got more of these titles than I have business to, many of which I haven't even finished. But they're there for the chipping. Before calling it a night completely, I'll jump into a Bit.Trip game and try to get that one more level that I failed at before. At the risk of being lulled to sleep, there's Lost Winds and its sequel, which I really need to dedicate some waking attention to. Swords and Soldiers competently handles my fleeting RTS needs and the idea of digging into My Life as a King again gets ever more attractive the longer I have to wait for a true SimCity sequel.
But I've digressed. By the end of a night with my Wii, I'm a satisfied customer. People say they can't find anything to play, but I don't understand that: I've got more than enough. I've heard that there's an abundance of shovelware, but that hasn't affected my actual Wii gaming. There's trepidation and general motion control displeasure, but I've had some pretty righteous motion control integrated good times.
Its been said somewhere, I think, (Johnathan Holmes?) that if you really love games, you have a Wii. As divisive a statement that may be, it feels that, if I didn't have a Wii, I'd have really missed out on some real pure core gaming this generation. Certainly, I'd have been a bit mopey about being a Wii only owner, but as a "core' gamer, I'd probably feel that way about any given system this generation.
That's my Wii Experience, and I'd say most times, its exactly what I need it to be.

It's just the percentage of video game play time that is used on each system. For example in January about 37% of the time spent playing video games in that month was spent on a PS2. I don't know if it's nation wide or world wide or what, however.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii (http://wii.ign.com/objects/143/14354229.html) has now sold 10 million copies worldwide since its release in November, which the paper says is the fastest selling title to attain that mark.
According to market research firm Enterbrain Inc., over 3 million copies have been sold in Japan, 4.5 million copies in North American, and nearly 3 million have been sold in Europe.
During the December month in the U.S., New Super Mario Bros Wii sold an impressive 2.82 million copies, and surpassed (http://wii.ign.com/articles/106/1062345p1.html) lifetime Super Mario Galaxy (http://wii.ign.com/objects/748/748588.html) sales in just over 45 days.

I honestly do not understand what all of the debate is about, any sensible person who is in their right mind knows that nintendo is, always has been, and always will be the leading syestem in the gaming market. Sure it doesnt have the amazing online experience like xBox 360, but the games are amazing, and once they do perfect the online play, which they will, they will have an unstoppable advantage over the other systems.
The only thing microsoft truly has is a few series of good games, which combined with the online experienc is basically the only thing keeping them in the field.
Sony should have continued to make the PS2 games because i feel that they do not have the marketing abilities to keep them in the fiel with only the PS3, which wont play the good old PS2 games.

It's true Microsoft has very deep pockets. I don't think this is an issue for Nintendo though. N has the market share when you're talking solely of the gaming industry.
Sony is too invested into it's PS franchise to back out of it now.
This is Nintendo's only business.
Microsoft doesn't need to stay invested. Anyone who believes MS wont pull the plug the instant it depreciates considerably is a fool.

I agree, Sony and Microsoft could easily just walk away from the business and leave Nintendo uncontended in the gaming industry, without very much monetary remorse because of all of the other items that they make like computers and cameras. No one would really care if they were gone from the gaming, but if Nintendo was out, there would be a many many more people affected by such an event.

I honestly don't think Microsoft is going anywhere. They have a solid fan base and a huge library of games on PC and xbox. Even with the extremely negative press about the RROD they still are doing very well. It would take something huge to stop them now.
Nintendo has to be wary because of what you pointed out-
This is Nintendo's only business.
They have everything to lose if they fall behind. The other two can ride it out until things improve or they decide it's over. This kind of pressure is good for Nintendo imo since it's motivates them to innovate but I just see them at a dangerous crossroads. If they pick the wrong path they'll be screwed.
Either way the next generation of consoles should be interesting.
I think MS sees the writing on the wall. The OS has been their gravy train but it is drying up. Windows currently has around a 95% market share but it is eroding. Macs and Linux split the other 5. I predict in 10-20 years Macs will peak at 10% and Linux will take 50%. Leaving MS with 40%. They know they need to come up with some new plans because the old ones will not continue to work the same.
They really want to beat Google and win the Internet race but they can't. As long as there is a small hope for the future they will stay in the game weather it is the Windows, Office, MSN, Zune or Xbox.
Nintendo is the only single focus game company left. All the others (Atari, Sega, etc) failed. Not saying that means something or not but I think that fits in with DB's argument.

@Tenser: RosenQueen Company :: Games :: Sakura Wars: So Long My Love ~Unforgettable Memories~ Collection (WII) (http://www.rosenqueen.com/product.php?productid=16331&cat=0&page=1) - good deal on the Sakura wars game. If you want the booklet with it, otherwise 30 bucks at Gamestop. Rosenqueen is NIS's US branch.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the best selling fighting game ever.
List of best-selling video games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_selling_video_games#By_genre)
Super Smash Bros. may not be the best selling fighting franchise (20.01 million copies sold)
but it's impresive to do that on 3 games
With #1 Tekken (33 million) doing it on 8 games.

games sell differently depending on the system,
on xbox all the name brand shooter will sell very well because the whole flock of xbox online players need to follow the latest title, to keep up with the rest of the crew.
on the wii the big sellers will be the games that are tried tested and true, mario, zelda and metroid will all sell great because gamers assume that there getting a quality game.
the ps3 games that sell well are all based on hype, the ps3 community is tight knit and quite fanboyish, and when a game looks like it will be cool, word spreads like wild fire.
at anytime anyone of these games could potentially suck, and the sleeper titles that are great go largely ignored because they dont fit into one of these categories.

FPS/RPG? :P (just pulling your leg)Actually you're close, the combat is similar to Fallout 3 or Gears of War. It is not a FPS though, fighting isn't a big part of the game. It's very focused on story and characters. I'd call it a first person rpg.
There's a lot of non FPS games on the 360, they just don't get the same media attention as MW2 and such.

First, this is my personal opinion developed from watching my wife play it for about an hour or so on her 360. This is just my taste and certainly others may feel differently.
I'm not calling out ME2 because it looks great, which it does. It also does an amazing job with character relations. Much kudos in both of those areas.
However it also comes off as a shallow, soulless construct. All the pizazz and flair of a summer blockbuster movie but unfortunately it also lacks that certain charm I search for in most of the games I purchase. That little something that shows me this was an absolute labor of love. Where you can see the developer wanted to make this game whether it sold 50 or 50 million copies and refused to cut any corners or prostitute himself to the greatest common fan base.
See A Boy and his Blob (Wii) for an example.
In the end, its snazzy yet shallow and easily forgettable.
Didn't Nintendo do the same? They had a commercial of Pikachu and Ness fighting each other with orchestral music in the backround.
Because I really want to play a game where I lose weight, I can just do that outside.
Cool. I don't like SSBB or WiiFit either. I don't have a problem with people using a video game to assist in losing weight. If it works for them why should you care, right?

Again, its just my opinion and I understand that I'm in the minority here.
Also, don't get me wrong. I'm not claiming that every game needs to be a deep experience through some developer's personal labor of love. I certainly enjoy wholly shallow experiences just as much as the next guy. Hell, I own a game called Bikini Zombie Slayers.
I'm just saying I went in expecting more than flash, believing the hype, and was let down quite handily. Same thing happened to me when I bought Resident Evil 4. What a waste of $20 that was.

It's just your bias tainting your perception of ME2 Tenser. In no way is it shallow or soulless. In fact it's one of the only rpgs I've played recently were I actually cared about the story and characters. This series is indeed a labor of love. I said bias because I feel you went into it with this in mind, possibly without realizing it. Also this is not a new IP they jumped all over to money grab, ME1 came out about 2 years ago. Just face it, they put a lot of effort into it and it's a great game. Yes they wanna make money but I don't know where you're getting the idea that it's a cash grab. 1. Our definitions of what a new IP and what an established IP are, are different. To me one or two previous releases does not establish something.
2. I've already stated I went into it with the idea that I wanted to like it in mind. Why wouldn't I want another game to play? I may prefer the Wii but its never a bad thing having more games to play.

1. I get what you mean but Mass Effect was designed to at least be a trilogy, depending on how well it's received. There was no cashing in on anything because the game was already in the works. The only thing remotely money grabbing was the preorders at different retailers but all the big releases have that nowdays. After the success of the first game I'm sure they had plenty of money and incentive to make ME2 awesome and so far I think it is.
2. I just took your overly negative tone to mean you had some bias towards it. To say such negative things about it from only watching it is a little extreme. What does your wife think of it?
3. Because it's a great game by a great company and I think you're misinformed about it.

I feel ME2 is money grubbing because its a...
Heartless, big budget video game

Summary: Its okay for developers to want to profit off of their product. And in a perfect world, the better the game the more profit it should make.
My issue stands where developers cut corners or blatantly pander to a larger demographic to increase profit margin. If you add or take something away from a game it should be done so for the sake of the game, not the sake of a bottom line.

1. Designing a game to be a trilogy right from the start also seems a bit money grabbing to me. I know nothing about the preorder situation so I can't comment on that.So when is it not money grabbing? I added the part about the trilogy to show you that ME2 wasn't some rushed sequel looking to cash in. If anything the success of the first game gave them more money to work with and more incentive to make it better. If that's wrong then I don't know what else to say.
2. I wasn't overly negative. There are certainly worse things to critique a game on than being shallow. Some games play well while being very shallow. See my previous Bikini Zombie Slayers reference for an example. The wife seems to be enjoying it readily. To be honest though, we rarely share the same tastes in video games. You may not think you were being negative but it certainly seemed that way to me. I can't really comment on Bioware as a company as I've only owned one of their games, NeverWinter Nights for the PC.I know it's just my opinion but it is relevant since I've played several of their games and I have plenty of experience with rpgs to compare it with.
My issue stands where developers cut corners or blatantly pander to a larger demographic to increase profit margin. If you add or take something away from a game it should be done so for the sake of the game, not the sake of a bottom line.So what made you think this about ME2? Hi guys, I don't mean to interrupt the flow of your general debate, but would like to ask if the 360 controllers have RU compatibility.
I remembered someone saying a while back they were plug and play on RU with no adapter needed, is this so?
On topic:
I know nothing of this topic, having never tried any of the games but it seems to me that the sales numbers of consoles cannot reflect the fun factor since it depends greatly on what sorts of games you are into.
What I mean is that I think there will be fanboys/girls for the systems making games those individuals like - that simple.
Also, when it comes to sales numbers: look at how popular the sega dreamcast is still to this day, and when it was being marketed it lost out to its competition so badly that at one point they were actually giving them away - and still no one would take them.

As far as I'm aware you can't. The wired controller plugs into the USB port on a PC, the wireless ones would have no way to send the signal to the PC. It sucks but I never found a way to get around that. I was stuck with two wireless 360 controllers for months, eventually I traded with someone for a wired.
