I love the World Cup. I tend to root for Italy and/or Germany. My native heritage comes from those countries.

I have no idea who is expected to win this year, although I'm sure Brazil is an early favorite. I understand that England has a damn good team this year as well.

I will make the bold prediction that the USA won't make it out of their group. I know they are favored (with England) to advance, but I envision something going wrong. As much as I love the USA, I've never liked the USA soccer team.

Do you understand why people like basketball? Because it's pretty much the same thing to me, the only difference is in basketball they trade points even though it hardly effects the game, and in soccer they kick it back and forth and once in a while someone scores.

I only get excited about soccer when it's the World Cup. It might be because my high school was too small to have a football team, so soccer was THE sport. I also attended a World Cup match between the USA and Brazil at Stanford stadium back in the 90's. I've been hooked ever since.

@ Dudebro: I agree that soccer is a difficult sport to watch unless you really enjoy and understand the game. I have to say though, when they score, (which is rare), the goals are usually pretty awesome.

I always enjoy watching the world cup but don't know enough about the teams/ season to make a prediction. In '98 when France beat Brazil that was epic though. I was an apprentice under a France French Chef at the time and soccer was Mandatory!

As for the Big Three, I totally forgot about Spain. Those guys are a lot of fun to watch. Torres and Villa are two of the best in the business.

I believe you can watch the games live, but the coolest thing that I remember from the last world cup are the highlight reels of each game. Those highlights would impress almost any non-soccer fan.

Even for the casual sports fan, I venture to say that the World Cup is pretty awesome. It's pretty much the Olympics of soccer. Teams spend 4 years trying to qualify for a tournament that is only dedicated to about 40 countries.

I was living in England during a portion of the '98 World Cup (hosted by France, won by France). Witnessing this was one of the most memorable, incredible experiences of my life, no exaggeration.

Practically the entire city of London (7+million people) shut down when it was time for England to play. Pubs were packed to the gills with die-hard fans, drinking, singing, trash talking and carrying on. It was wonderful! I remember getting super drunk with the locals, sharing stories, laughing, arguing and getting totally consumed by the whole experience.

I think that even a non-sports fan could appreciate a scene like that.

Yep. There are plenty of countries that stop everything to go watch their national team play at the World Cup. To share a pint with friends and scream "goooooal!" when your team scores and nothing else matters but the game at hand.

I agree with you guys, goalkeeping is an art form. I thing the reason that a majority may find the sport boring is not the low scoring necessarily it's the low scoring opportunities in the game. There are very few shots on goal in a soccer match. I do not mind a 1-0 game if there is enough scoring opportunities and back and forth action.

well Sabby, I guess it depends on the game that you are watching. I rarely see a game with few shots on target. The game is also about the teamwork and plays that develop into potential moments to take a shot. Individual skills while dribbling, passing and ball control are all things that I enjoy watching in football/soccer games.

I'm not sure I'd call that weak-ass headbutt awesome. If Zidane had headbutted that dude in the face, exploding his nose into a bloody mess, THAT would've been awesome.

That actually leads me to my only real criticism of soccer, and that's flopping. Take a look at that Italian guy in the above video. That must've been some head butt to knock him on his ass like that! I've never understood why soccer players don't grit out a tough collision or slidetackle. In most cases, they lie on the ground writhing in agony until the trainer comes out and sprays that magic spray on them. It's pretty weak.

Aside from that, I'm still pumped for the World Cup.

Yeah I agree with you on that one Tac24. I believe the reason for this is that if a player gets ejected from the game with a direct red card, you can't replace that missing player with another. Basically your down a man and that really hurts the team's offence and defence capabilities. In the NFL you get extra yards as a penalty. NHL you get 5 minutes in the box or something like that. NBA you have to commit 5 fouls to get ejected. In football/soccer you can get 2 yellow cards and get ejected or get a direct red card for immediate ejection.

I really like the fact that the team plays a man down after the red card. 10 on 11 doesn't seem like a huge disadvantage, but I remember from from high school days, it most definitely is.

Obviously I don't watch soccer so I can't speak on that but I know they basically fake injury in basketball to get the other guy in trouble. Most guys don't hit the ground after being nudged but in Basketball it somehow knocks them down and they can't get up until they see the ref notice them or not. It's pretty lame but it's an understandable tactic.

Soccer fan here. Watch out for the TL;DR.

What do I want? To see Argentina champion of the WC.
Would that happen on 2010? Hardly. With the coach that we have now (Maradona, for those who don't know him) we can't possibly say we are candidates to win it. He is, by far, the most incompetent coach I've ever seen in my 25 years. I've been watching (and playing) soccer (futbol, for those who speak spanish) since I was 4 and he has NO IDEA on how to coach. We have a good team, but no head and no ideas.

On the other side, I believe this WC is going to go directly into Brazil's hands. Why? Because they're one of the strongest teams in the world and they have someone who understands soccer and how to play it. Brazil is good in ALL lines. They have the best goalkeeper in the world, one of the best defenses, awesome midfielders and some of the greatest attack players of all time.
Spain also has a pretty good team, but they won't get far. Sadly for them, when it comes to play for the win, they chicken out. The same happens to England and France (which, btw, is playing this world cup for free. After what Henry did vs Ireland). Italy always uses the same strategy (Cattenaccio) and can be easily defeated once you score one goal to them.

Related to the other topic... In order for you to love soccer, you have to play it. There's no explanation. Once you play it and get the feeling of all the things you can do, you fall in love right away.

The 'Handegg' is only in contact with players' feet for a millisecond during a given game, while the 'Football' sees a lot more foot contact per game, by comparison.

No, it's just different cultures. I am fairly sure that you are not from the states jozman (please correct me if I am wrong). In the US, soccer is not as popular as American Football, Baseball, Basketball, or Hockey. Whereas, in many other cultures soccer/football is the number one through four sports.

We are less than a month away from the start of the World Cup 2010. I'm in the minority, but I am really looking forward to it.

A few months have passed since we've updated this thread, so I'll note what I believe to be a few interesting and potentially tournament changing storylines to watch.

1) The health of Fernando Torres (Spain). Spain's best striker had knee surgery and is doubtful for the opener against Switzerland. As one of the best teams in the competition (and one of my favorites), I believe Spain doesn't stand a chance to win the cup unless Torres is healthy.

2) Michael Ballack (germany) is out for the Cup with torn ligaments in his ankle. This is devastating for a solid German squad. Ballack is the rock and captain of that squad, and Germany will have a tough time without him.

The odds on favorites to win are, in order: Spain, Brazil, England, Argentina and Germany. If not for the Torres injury, I'd pick Spain but I have to lean towards Brazil. Of course, I will always root for the Italians, but I don't think they have a chance this year.

This will probably fall on deaf ears, so I'll also include a few extra reasons to watch the World Cup, England in particular:

Team is very good, after this game I believe it will make the FIFA World Cup at the end of the year. Cruzeiro was doing an excellent campaign.

Flamengo throws to make semifinals also, plays today against Universidad, on Chile. But will be hard. Flamengo lost his first match on Rio de Janeiro, 3 X 2. Chileans' advantage is small, but Flamengo fans aren't believing team can win. Let's wait and see. And really, Flamengo fans are fanatics mostly.

For me, the highlights are Michel Bastos (left winger), and Robinho (striker). Robinho can even make it rain on the field, nowadays. Last matches for his team, Santos F. C., were incredible.

The coach, Dunga, didn't call many other excellent players (like Ronaldinho Gaúcho) for the sake of stardom. Not the best team that he could have been called, but it will be a fighting team.

I'll try to describe it: Basically the player (Robinho?) collected the ball at the top of the 18 on a volley, he continued to juggle the ball about 3 or 4 times, ultimately kicking the ball on the fly into the upper left corner of the goal.

Brazil is in the "group of death" with the Ivory Coast, Portugal and N. Koreans. Brazil is more than likely moving on as first if not then second of the group. Portugal is a great team, even if they did have a crappy time to qualify. Ivory Coast is a solid team with strong players. Sadly I don't see the Koreans doing anything here. They got the brown end of the stick on this one.

My perdiction is that Brazil and the Ivory Coast will move on to the next round.

You've officially made me a fan of the Ivory Coast, Joz. I fired up FIFA World Cup 06 on my PS2 over the weekend and played through with the Ivory Coast. I defeated Netherlands 3-1 in the final.
Almost everyone knows Drogba, but they clearly have a talented bunch. I'm looking forward to watching them in June.

Now, on to our boys here in the USA. Call me unpatriotic, but I've NEVER been a big fan of team USA. Their style of play is boring and quite frankly, they just aren't good. They've improved over the past 10 years, but I can't get behind these guys. I'd much rather root for my ancestoral heritage, the Italians and Germans.

Team USA lost 4-2 last night to the Czechs, and it was pretty embarrasing. The defense is what has me particularly worried. Are the Czechs even in the World Cup? I don't know anything about Algeria and Slovenia, the USA's upcoming World Cup opponents, but I bet one of those teams likes their chances to advance out of the first round. Of course, the USA will probably surprise everyone and beat England or something, but I'll still be rooting loud for the Italians and half-heartedly for team USA.

We are just about 1 week away from kickoff and I need your help!

My Dad and I are placing wagers on the World Cup. We will take turns selecting our teams until we've picked all 32 squads. For example, he takes Brazil, I take Spain, he takes Argentina, I take Netherlands, etc., etc.
We then track those teams throughout the tournament, betting increasing amounts from round to round until we have our champ.

I am up to speed on the mainstream teams, but I'm wondering if someone can help me find a few "sleeper" squads. Teams that might not be on anyone's radar but could make an impact (Ivory Coast?) or teams that are peaking right now in their Friendly play. For instance, I noticed that Portugal put up a pretty uninspired effort recently.

What teams do you think I should target and what teams do you think I should avoid? We bet money in every round, so the farther a team goes, the more money I win. I'm not just looking for a World Cup champion, I'm looking for teams that can advance to the knockout stages and beyond.

Loving this thread as a Brit! The irony is that my favourite sport is American Football!

For hat it's worth, I think the England team (my country) is seriously over-rated. Well get through the group but then lose on penalties in the round of 16 or the quarter-finals - our captain and best defender, Rio Ferdinand, is also ruled out as he damaged his knee in training today. Brazil has a good chance (although they often have one bad performance a tournament). Ivory Coast looked good but now Drogba has broken his arm I wonder where the goals will come from. Portugal are over-rated and are pretty mediocre but will now get out of their group.

Italy can never be overlooked as they are so professional and very experienced. They aren't great to watch though. The Germans are the same, they aren't the most gifted but they never know when they are beaten.

Argentina have the best player in the world by a mile (Lionel Messi, absolute genius) and some other great players. Are they cohesive enough as a team and is Maradona a good enough manager (despite being the best player ever in my view - youtube him!) to go all the way? Maybe not.

Netherlands have a very gifted team but they are usually arguing with one another. Spain are the best team in the competition but often blow it in tight games. Not this time - they will make at leasat the semi-finals and anything can happen then.

For those who want a sleeper, take a look at South Korea. They could do well (they won't win it but could make a run to the semi-final.

In summary, the teams to really keep an eye on: Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea.

Well I am a bit biased towards Mexico, but they did beat the defending champs, Italy, 2-1 yesterday on a dominantly played friendly. Mexico did lose against England and Netherlands, but Mexico did play well in both of the matches. Umm....lets see, France I'm predicting won't make it past the first round and Spain is going to make it far this WC.

I don't know if it is of interest, but I completed one of those predictors on ESPN. We have a league on a UK NFL forum I moderate. I ended up with England losing in the round of 16 to Germany. good question...I'll give you a few.

Probably the next in line to win the cup after Brazil and Spain would have to go to Germany then to the defending champs Italy.

The biggest surprise winners would have to go to England. Great team and soo much potential to win it. But due to their WC history, are not a favorite to win it.

Biggest disappointment goes to Portugal, France and Argentina. Portugal I fee is still not their time shine. France and Argentina have great roster, but possibly the two worst coaches in the tournament.

Personal dream would go to Mexico of course. If Mexico wins the World Cup, it would be safe to say the Mayans were right and the world is going to end on 2012.

Either way, it will make watching the Cup a bit more interesting for me. I'm really sad to see all the recent injuries. It has taken my excitement level down from a 9 down to about a 7. By kickoff, it will surely be back to a 9.

yeah I think you got better picks than your dad Tanc. Brazil is always a good pick but besides that, he had a bunch of strong teams that always seem to disappoint in the end. Most of the time at least. I think the loss of all those key players for those big teams out there is really going to taken advantage of by everyone trying to make a name for themselves. Think about it, Drogba was the I.C's main attacker and probably had their offence set around him. Italy lost a big influence in the midfield. Germany lost their captain and key playmaker with Ballack. England's defence is hurt with Ferdinand gone. Nani is a loss in attack power and probably a dent in Portugal's moral.
I think these injuries will spice up this World Cup.

As far as the Jabulani goes. Well I think the keepers are justified in complaining about the balls. But oh well. They just have to suck it up.

You can't escape it here in England at the moment. We are expected to do well but I can't see it - we're too much of a one man show in Rooney who's brilliant on his day but too temperamental and a little injury prone.

@Tanc you definitely picked more wisely than your Dad IMHO. I don't know whether it's been mentioned but Drogba has had an op on his arm (amazing what money can do) and is expected to participate.

A lot of money over here is going on Spain but the favourites don't always do that well. IMHO it's very open and could be won by a suprise team around the middle of the bookies odds tables.

I guess I'm in the minority. I never played Futbol, but I have always loved the sport. Then again, I'm not the best judge because I tend to like European/Canadian sports over U.S. sports in general. I would always prefer to watch Cricket over Baseball and Soccer/Hockey over Basketball any day.

I missed the 2nd half (of course :at-wits-end:) but Mexico outplayed South Africa in the 1st half. I haven't seen either goal, but it seems like Mexico was fortunate to escape with a 1-1 tie.

Today's match typifies why I have a hard time getting behind USA soccer. They always seem to play ugly. USA goals are almost never spectacular, and today's goal was downright embarrassing.

We should be thanking the futbol Gods tonight to come out of that with a draw.

Overall, I think we had a very good start to the World Cup. There were many good games, but the Germans certainly made the most lasting impression with their drubbing of Australia yesterday. You'd never know they were missing Ballack...

I was happy to see some of the African teams put up good showings as well. South Africa has to feel good about a draw, and Ghana looked solid in their win over Serbia.

Ivory Coast vs. Portugal is the game I am now most looking forward to...

Well, Ivory Coast v. Portugal was a dud. Ronaldo took a shot from 35 yards out that would've been the goal of the tournament, but it clanged off the post. Overall, it was a pretty uninspired performance for such an important game.

It was good to see Drogba back, but he didn't look like the dominant, aggressive player that he is. In fact, he had a chance near the end of the match to score a goal from about 10 yards and he elected to pass across the middle of the goal. I thought he wasted a golden opportunity to steal that game.

Brazil looked pretty sluggish in their first match. I wonder if the North Koreans might play spoiler to one of the other teams. They were completely over matched against Brazil, but they actually looked respectable.

France v. Mexico is rapidly approaching. I know Joz is drooling over that matchup!

Well, I blew this prediction. First off, I had Spain playing the wrong team. They are actually playing Switzerland. Secondly, Spain is scoreless through 85 minutes and is losing 1-0.

Argentina looked very strong against a decent South Korean team. If they continue to get performances like that, they will be tough to beat.

England should cruise by Algeria today. I probably won't catch much of the match, but a win will put them in good shape to advance. If that happens, we will need a USA win and an England victory over Slovenia in the final games.

I think Brazil is going to petition the red card against Kaka or at the very least, push for a punishment towards the ref. Ivory Coast lost their head and started to get pissed at the Brazilians for toying with them during the match. But hey, it's not Brazil's fault I.C. couldn't handle the power of the green and yellow.

Portugal just beat N. Korea 7-0 and are up against Brazil for their final pool game. The winner of that match will determine who takes the top spot. Ivory Coast would have to beat the Koreans by a rediculously high score to and have Portugal lose in order to even have a chance to go to the next round.

With today's technology, the refs really have it rough. They are making judgement calls that are occurring at split second speed. I almost think they need to add a 2nd field ref to clean things up. Too many games have been affected by bad calls.

The round of 16 is starting to shape up nicely. Ghana appears to be the only African team with a good shot of advancing, and that's no cakewalk. They need to either beat Germany (not easy) or tie and hope Serbia doesn't win against Australia. Italy is on shaky ground as well. If they advance to the next round, they will need to step their game up if they want to continue on any further.

Overall, it's been a fun World Cup so far. I haven't seen a ton of spectacular goals, but there have been a few. Brazil's striker (Fabiano?) had a couple of sweet goals yesterday.

I agree that the refereeing has been poor. A part of it is FIFA's insistence on using refs from all over the world when, in reality, many of them (such as the Saudi (I think) who reffed the game between Chile and Switzerland) aren't up to it and aren't used to the big stage.

A problem with introducing a second on-field ref is one of consistency. So many calls in football / soccer (aside from offside / handball etc) are subjective. Players get confused easily as they often aren't very bright. Nice idea though - it's just never worked when it's been tried.

My friends the South Koreans are through, which is excellent news :)

Mexico has their work cut out for them next round against Argentina. I will be rooting for the Mexicans, but Argentina is looking like a team that can win it all. Granted, they didn't have any first class talent in their Group, but they are winning in fine fashion. This sounds like sacrilege, but prior to the Cup I'd never seen Lionel Messi play. All I can say is WOW. When this guy touches the ball, amazing things happen. He hasn't scored yet this World Cup, but his super-powerful shots on goal have led to at least 3 goals for his team.

More big games tomorrow. USA/Algeria and England/Slovenia both have huge implications. I have a good feeling about team USA, but I worry about our English brothers. It's no secret, but something just isn't right with that squad. In the other group, Germany/Ghana and Serbia/Australia could be epic. I'm really hoping for an Australian upset of the Serbians so that Ghana and Germany can both advance. It might be wishful thinking, however.

My only complaint about the games this year is that living on the West coast the games are on very early in the day. As much as I like to knock back some cold ones, I just can't justify going to a local bar a 7am to watch team USA whoop Algeria's butt. :lol:

You're right! I hadn't thought about that. I'm too fixated on the match against Argentina that that hadn't crossed my mind. That's probably how Mexico is thinking anyways. They shouldn't be thinking about anything else other than Argentina.

Let's see who else makes it to the knockout stage today.

The final 16 is almost set! That USA game was absolutely miraculous. As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of USA soccer but these guys showed incredible perseverance and definitely deserve to advance to the round of 16. In fact, their bracket sets up pretty well for them to reach the Semifinals. They don't have to beat any major superpower (Brazil, Netherlands, Spain, Argentina) to get there, and they should have a ton of confidence moving forward. If they can get their back line in order, I like them above anyone else on their side of the bracket. Uruguay and South Korea are dangerous, but beatable.

This afternoon's game between Spain and Chile is huge. If Spain wins, I believe they jump ahead of Chile and claim top spot in the group. If they tie, the would be 2nd in the group and be forced to face Brazil in the round of 16. :bulgy-eyes: Not exactly a matchup you want to see this early in the tournament.

USA deserved to lose. I can't believe how many times their back line let them down in this World Cup. They still have a LONG way to go before they are truly relevant.

Argentina and Germany were clearly the better squads in today's games. I think the final outcome would've been the same regardless of the officiating mishaps, but it's a shame that there were HUGE blown calls in each game. I felt worse for Mexico because they came out of the gate so strong. That 1st goal really kicked them in the stomach. Germany looked like they could score on England at will, but the referrees missing that goal is unforgivable.

I am never a huge advocate of instant replay, but soccer would be well-served to implement some sort of replay system on plays that lead to goals. Without replay of some kind, the officials will continue to get exposed. It's not even their fault, really. Technology has simply advanced so much that it has become far more reliable than the human eye.

By the way, does anyone else watching the US coverage of the Cup hate Alexi Lalas? That guy has got to be one of the worst analysists on television in any sport.

Speaking of Brazil, we have a great match tomorrow between Brazil and Netherlands. I'm already planning on coming into work late so I can watch the entire match. I have absolutely no idea who is going to win, but you've got to like Brazil.

Just seen this posted by my brother on another forum, thought I'd share. Not into numerology per se, but this is intriguing!

Brazil won the World Cup in 1994, before that, their last World cup win was in 1970. If you add 1970 + 1994 = 3964

Argentina won its last World Cup in 1986, before that, only in 1978. Adding 1978 + 1986 = 3964

Already Germany won their last Cup in 1990. Before that was in 1974. Adding 1990 + 1974 = 3964

Following this logic, one could have guessed that Brazil was the winner of the World Cup in 2002, since this was the Cup winner in 1962!

Checking: 3964 -2002 = 1962

Today's match should be great. My allegiance has always been to Italy and Germany, so I'm rooting for the Germans. They are playing incredible right now, but I am concerned that Mueller is out for today's match.

Spain has not looked truly dominant in any matches that I can remember this World Cup. They keep finding ways to win, however, and my gut tells me they are going to find a way to win this match today.

In short, my heart says Germany, my gut says Spain. How's that for indecisiveness?

I feel bad for them too. That last game was so messed up in so many ways too. Still hats off to Spain for playing pretty well. Good Cup overall.

I was really happy to see Spain win. I think they play a beautiful style of soccer and although that game (or their entire World Cup!) didn't show off their great style, I think they were truly the better team and deserved to win.

My winnings all told against my Dad were in excess of $1,100! Although we never really pay each other, but it's fun to have bragging rights!
