fighting games are as complex as you want to make them, you guys are learn your 10 hit, 65 button 100% damage king combos, and street fighter players are learning all the very subtle ins and outs of the game.
i find most 3d fighting games play out very chunky-like, too slow, like press down-down towards- towards and hit a button, then dont touch the controller for 3 seconds while you watch your player, anticipate his move, excecute his move, and then recover from his move. this results in too many retarded breaks in the action. where as street fighter (aswell as most other 2d fighters) have a steady flow of awsomeness.
I can see people digging the 3d games if they cant handle the fast pace of an old school fighter though, so i can see where you guys are coming from.

Well yeah I can see that being annoying if you don't take the time to learn the game. Every multi part throw has a counter, you only get destroyed if you don't counter. Besides, at least King is an original character. How many Ryu clones are in SF nowdays? Hmm, just about every character, right?

I do like 2d fighters, and mostly prefer them, the only 3d series I really like is Tekken. If you want complexity and speed for a 2d fighter, go for Guilty Gear.

soulcaliber has seigfried/nightmare and Taki
guilty gear I have never played
Mortal kombat had liu kang and Raiden
So im even for all of those.
My primary faveorites though are Nightwarriors: darkstalkers revenge and Marvel super heroes.
Nightwarriers had a huge cast of awesome characters. Felicia, morrigan, tailbane, demitri, and donovan.
Marvel has spider man, psylock,wolvy,shuma gorath, and doctor doom.
each game has cheap characters and good characters. when I find the one I figure out, I play that one.

Super smash bros is my third fave, but its more party game than fighter. (Zero suit samus, Link, Marth, and Ike RULE LOL)

If you want to vote company wise Capcom wins. Hell soon it iwll have both versions of Zero in fighting game form ^^. (one in an onimusha fighter, the other in the upcoming Capcom vs tatsu whatever)

Up until Tekken1 came out I loved SF and played it a lot. I played other fighting games but I always went back to SF. I like it enough to play it with friends but I wouldn't buy it. Like I said somewhere else on the site, I had high hopes for the new SF but it just let me down. It looks awesome and it does play well but the overall game just didn't agree with me and I didn't enjoy it like I used to.

All fighting games stay pretty much the same. I don't think Tekken or SF changed enough to compare them really. Guile still has like 2 moves and Heihachi is still a beast.

I'm not that into Soul Caliber really. I like a few characters but the gameplay bores me after a while.
I agree about DOA, that game is just lame eye candy that just happens to be a fighting game. The only cool thing is the drunken boxing character. I don't like VF much but it was cool back in the day.
Darkstalkers is cool but MvsC is just awesome.

Rufus, Crimson Viper, Seth, Rose are the characters I don't like in SF4. It doesn't really matter though, everyone will have different opinions about characters. I just didn't like playing the game.

Btw the first 2-3 Bloody Roar games are better than all these games we're talking about. Yeah, really.

Gotta disagree there.. I had alot of fun with the doa games. MVC2 is a game I desperately want after I played it once or twice on an arcade cabinet. Heck that's what reintroduced me to the SF crew and made me come and play SF here on RU. Virtual fighter was also fun, except for the fact that it take so long to recover from attacks.. even on low difficulty the computer could string a series of attacks and take out nearly all your health. I still got pounded, even when I used cheats and maxed out my health and tried.. (Akira is bloody evil..)

havnet played any of the bloody roar games yet so no opinion on those..

I thought C. Viper and Rose were cool characters, and I liked Rufus after I learned to use him. He still looks like an idiot, but he's fun to play as.

For most modes yeah, but for a few others, you need to deal with coin collecting or hit points. My favorite mode personally is endurance. "fight till you kill your enemy." Especially for fun sword duels.

Smash bros brings up an interesting thought I had a while ago.. about how many games are mostly just for game fans.

I mean in all honesty, who in there right mind would make a castlevania or a final fantasy fighting game? I love the ideas because im a fan but thinking logically, what would be the point? Outside of kingdom hearts (though it also fits here sort of) why in the world would cloud fight squall?

As much as I loved it when I played it, I think the trend of mixxing things that shouldn't really mix, or putting RPG and platform characters into fighting games, started thanks to the Capcom Vs series. Where they decided to take thier many game series, and mash them together into one game. So that Ryu could pound spider man, or stuff like that. I am now seeing fights that would only be seen in mugen videos, beoming reality. x era Zero can offically punch Ryu in the face.

Too be honest I like the games, but wonder if, over all, they are a good idea... I used to think it was impossible, but with all the combinations and buying outs lately.. I wont be surprised to see a Mega mugen like fighting game thats actually amde by capcom.

If we're talking about fighting games, I'd say I don't like the traditional style of 2d martial arts or 3d martial arts. I think games with the styles like Super Smash Bros. and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja(Yes, I know it's a bit odd but that has to be one of the few fighting games that holds my attention) are much more enjoyable than something like Street Fighter.

If we're talking about fighting games, I'd say I don't like the traditional style of 2d martial arts or 3d martial arts. dead or alive was fun because the characters actually interacted. From the very first one (on a demo I played for dreamcast..) they all knew eachother.. had personal lives.. whether just for fun or for revenge the characters all interacted. to me they had reasons to fight, instead of mindlessly pounding eachother..
Street fighter also did this, only much later on. then only in specific scenes.. Nearly all dealing with Ryu.. Being with Ken, akuma, Sakura, Sagat. From what I can tell the only character with much of a back story for the games was Ryu.. hell he even has an IN GAME Dark form.

Anime fighting games like Naruto are slightly interesting because of the extra possibilities you can witness. Differing form the anime or manga you could see what happens if for example yopu beat sasuke playing Garra. The only real anime fighter I have played was an Inuyasha fighting game for ps1. Where I had fun playign as the bad guy and killing off the heroes.. just to see what would happen in the end^^.

It was a fighting game that, made fun of a ton of different anime styles and character types.. it had dam near every stereo type anime character there was... which was why I had fun and laughed alot watching it. The fights were separated into Episodes complete with character commentary between and after each fight.. LOL Oh and the dialogue was also cheesy ^^. Despite those things the combat was surprisingly solid... like smash bros the contorls were simple, but pulling it all together and timing things made for a really cool show.

DOA is an ok fighting game but I think they decided to focus way too much on flashy graphics and jiggly boobs. A few of the characters are awesome though, too bad they aren't in a better game so they'd get noticed.

Truth. All jokes aside, DOAX is strangely relaxing and a decent game of VB (not to be confused with Cassidy and the Vicious Breed). I replaced all the in game soundtracks with beach music and tropical sounds, so the game felt sweet.

Indeed. It felt like Virtua Fighter to me fighting wise, and I agree the fights were over way too quick. I didn't mind the jiggly boobs (is the technical term jiggly puffs?), but it's true the ads and everything completely focused on the sex appeal side of things instead of game play.

I like the character designs, and being a huge fan of the Ninja Gaiden franchise, I was happy to see Ryu, but in the actual game he is basically an unrelated character with the same name.

Yeah, I thought it was fun. It's not the kind of game I would play all the time, but it's a great game after a stressful day where you can kick back have a couple of beers, play some VB, and just chill.

Another series I liked (off topic somewhat since it's not a fighting game per se) is the Outlaw sports games. Outlaw volleyball was pretty fun. GG and I used to have fun playing co-op in that one. Outlaw Golf was fun too.

Back on topic, I think the Samurai Showdown (-aka- Samurai Shinsetsu) series is still one of my personal favorites of all time. I like the fact that they did not try to do an exact SFII clone like many fighters of the time and went with the weapon combat.

I'm with you on this one Joe. I don't want to get too graphic here, but I remember when Super SFII came out. At the time Cammy was about the sexiest and most provocative woman the video game world had seen up to that point.

I'm not a real die hard fan of any fighting game series. I like them all because they all have something different to offer. Street fighter is great in it's simplicity. MK has the blood and gore. Marvel vs Capcom is very fast paced with a huge roster. Tekken has good depth into character moves and top notch graphics. In the end, fighting games are always fun when you have someone to play with.
