View Full Version : ArcadeOX version 2 feature request

Kong
12-31-2009, 12:07 AM
I am currently working on the next version of ArcadeOX.

Please post feature requests and comments here. Also if you can afford to make a donation to this cause please do so (http://retrouprising.com/misc.php?do=donate).

Planned additions for version 2.

Run DOS games like Quake and older PC games.
Use the Programs Folder instead of the Temp folder to prevent files disappearing and make it easier to access save states and other files.
Make it easy to open the arcadeox file so you can make back ups of save states.
Display the size of the arcadeox temp folder as it can get very big and you might want to monitor the size and clear out games you wont play again.
Improve downloader. Include progress bar and resume support so you can run files that are over 100MB.
Improve sandbox. More on this below.
Allow other websites to use ArcadeOX. More below.

1-4 are mostly complete already.

Things that might be added after these items are finished.

Improve installer
Back save states up online.

Sandbox
In computer terms a sandbox means that a program is blocked off from the rest of your computer. A program ran inside a good sandbox can not access any part of your computer except itself. That means if you run a program that contains a virus from inside a sandbox then you would not be infected and would remain safe. The current version of ArcadeOX already does this to an extent but before I can allow other sites access to use ArcadeOX I have to make this feature extremely solid and robust and do lots of testing and hire other programmers to double check my work. Which is expensive.

After the sandbox is finished you will be able to run a file infected with a virus from your email or other websites inside the arcadeox sandbox and even though you ran a file with a virus your computer will not be infected. There are other sandboxes that already exist for just this purpose, all I would be doing is combining their functionality with arcadeox for added protection. This is to allow you to be safe running arcadeox games from any website.

Other sites.
In version 2 when a site tries to launch an arcadeox game you will be asked if you want to allow that site to use arcadeox, yes, no, always, never.

If we get this I'll be happy. The DOS games sound cool too.

The biggest improvements needed for this are an obvious chat system and make it obvious so we can funnel non-forum members into netplay and have more people to choose from and easy instructions for things like ports, IPs and firewalls and maybe some tools to help set those things up and verify that they are working correctly. I want to finish the current stuff I have started first though.

Other than that, there probably wont be much improvement. If you have a good internet connection, live in the same state and know what you are doing then netplay should work well now in several systems in ArcadeOX Full Mode. If you have a bad internet connection or live across an ocean from the person you are trying to play then it probably will never work for you.

Basically what needs to be done is make it more easy and obvious. The actual technical functionality is not perfect but it is about as good as it is going to get.

I have an odd request, but its not very important actually.. Its just, id like the option to have multiple 1st player controls for game systems. So that I can set up my controller, and if that goes vanishing again, I wouldn't have to re fix all the configurations to keyboard again.

Kong

I don't understand.

I don't understand.

I think he is asking about ArcadeOX saving custom controls. What happens now is, you can map the controls to your controller/device, but then those controls often reset, and you have to do it again. Some systems seem to save controls longer than others.

Kong
12-31-2009, 07:50 AM
The reset is often caused by system updates which is caused by it being a new service. After everything gets worked out and solid then that wont happen as often. Though 2 & 3 listed in the first post should help with that.

That would be nice. Personally, I see this more with Coin-Ops currently than anything else. I guess this is probably because each game is more or less a different system with its own control layout.

yeah. thats it exactly^^ thanks. Some sort of code that works with most systems for custom controls.. That way you can have a controller, and just play using it without having too constantly input the controls..
though that could be difficult because the systems have different button schemes..
Would still be a cool idea though.

though coin op would have to be manual still, because of some of the games movement bits. mainly those that use the roller ball thing or a tilted screen.

all these features sound good, although I would prefer, my aox file to just go on my desktop. But anything is better then the temp file.

Kong
12-31-2009, 07:06 PM
Some sort of code that works with most systems for custom controls. The best I could do is make sure each individual system uses the same default controls, which I have but there are still a couple oddballs that could be improved. But if you wanted to change the controls you would have to do it for one system at a time. I can try to improve the control saving like mentioned above so you only have to do it once for each system. Also I could make some default xpadder settings that you could download and you would only need to edit them once to work with all systems, in theory.

Belmontzar
01-03-2010, 05:13 AM
oh never mind about that Kong. Ill just suck it up and set my controls^^ dont need Xpadder for my controller. I was just thinking that a second set of controls would be cool. Like for mapping buttons, having an option to map two or more keys for that button.

For example NES mapping the A button to Z and C at the same time. Only A would be keyboard Z and controller button 1 on my item.

Oh I hope that makes sense.. if not let me know and ill try again @.@

of course the mapping for each system would be system specific. Setting controls for the different systems isn't a problem, its the fixing buttons from keyboard to controller and back which is a headache.

Kong
01-03-2010, 05:38 AM
If I understood correctly, you want to be able to easily switch between a controller and a keyboard? That is possible in all ArcadeOX Score Mode games. Press Tab and configure the controls.

In all other modes for most systems the only option is to use something like xpadder. This isn't likely to change.

Belmontzar
01-07-2010, 06:01 AM
Never mind ill jsut deal the way I have been. And my controller has worked fine for all the systems I have played so far. So ill just switch manually when I cant find the controller.

Maybe asking a bit too much, but any chance of some N64 games popping up in the (hopefully not too distant) future?

That would be ace. :)

Kong
01-07-2010, 09:03 AM
Short answer ask again in 2012.

N64 was produced until 2002. We do not add systems until it has been out of production for at least 10 years. This is our definition of retro and I feel a decent compromise between preserving the past and blatant infringement.

Aside from the 10 year limit there are technical limitations. The video card requirements and file sizes are larger than anything we currently have. And configuring N64 to run on a computer currently requires tweaking settings for each individual computer that isn't really easy for our system to automate or for a novice computer user to manually setup.

those upgrades sound pretty cool, especially the use of programs instead of the temp files folder. also, maybey we could do some multiplayer? me and my brother think it would be cool if we can play SF:ALPHA2 on the same PC. just a thought.

Kong

Happy New Year!

Glad to hear these news, i would be more interested in the arcadeOX, to use it on a website, will it be possible to run ringtone maker, wallpaper maker, and other small softwares on my website as online tools?.
That would make me really happy :)
Also, i would be happy to offer myself as a tester (for free offcourse) ;)

:D You really amaze me with this website :D

Kong

I am not going to answer that type of question.
1. It would only be an educated guess.
2. It takes some time and effort to answer.
3. The questions would never stop.

We will be sticking to the 10 year rule and no CDs. That should help you answer some of these questions on your own. We will start off with games less than 10MBs but that might quickly expand, maybe.

Belmontzar
01-20-2010, 12:28 PM
so basically any games that ended production around 2000 then..
Wow thats like... all the DOS games.. so the actual limitation is the size.. Luckily for all of us most DOS games are not that big I dont think. Oh and no CD games of course.. which makes sense since so many of them are.. To start the game put in Disk 1.. now disk 3.. and actually play the game on disc 2... lol
-blinks- so many games... Not as many if you WEED out the game duplicates.. but since each version is different thats not really a change..

what would be amazingly cool is if you could watch other people play live, so your down to the wire on a big tournament, as your going head to head, you can watch your competitor live. people can crowd around and watch the big finale from there own pc's. "the star! cameron, the star!!!"

Full mode for ArcadeOX games I believe you can cheat on, but why cheat unless it raises the difficulty?

Dojah

Cheating sucks...and Steven that would be really cool.

Kong
01-21-2010, 06:20 PM
@Steven. 1 person watching 1 person live in full mode for most systems is possible. Adding that to score mode would be very tricky. Watching recorded games after the fact is a planned feature. Multiple people watching a game live could probably be possible through a third party software. I can look into that later.

@simgeezy33 ArcadeOX Full Mode for most systems supports several cheats including game genie style cheats. If that doesn't answer your question let me know what exactly you mean.

Slime Slayer
01-21-2010, 07:50 PM
cool, here is a site that does it: Live Video Home - Xfire (http://www.xfire.com/live_video/) not sure if their method would be what youd use or not.
also what would be cool is when you scroll down to the bottom of the page in the arcade, the game boxes of the currently active game/player could be replaced with the live game, man that would be sweet.
im worried that if this feature is implemented in an inconvient way it will go unoticed and not used often, kinda like the way chat is ignored.

Kong
01-21-2010, 09:08 PM
I think that would work. It would be something you would install separately and turn manually on. Something you would voluntarily do for special events like tournaments and contests and trash talking and "game night".

I should also add that some type of codes that can alter game conditions (i.e. Grand Theft Auto where you can make cars fall from the sky or change the weather) or cause wacky effects can be cool.

I just mean that codes that grant extra lives, invincibility, etc. are not fun for me, but there should be nothing against it in Full Mode.

Yeah, I don't think there is ever a good time to cheat in Score Mode. Full Mode is cool because it's just for personal fun (not competition or trophies), so that should be okay. People who feel the need to cheat in Score Mode are...

Score mode its all me, as far as I can go and doing my best. But alot of cheats are fun to use and play with^^. Personally, as long as hte cheats are programmed in, they are fine in my book. Can I make a windows game using .net (c#) and have it on the site?
kind of answering my own question, no because it's a new game, but what if I make it look really retro? There is not a simple answer. If it can technically be added and you make it yourself and you want it on the site then I will add it. By technically possible it has to run in a stand alone folder. Can't make any calls outside such as to my documents, registry, program files etc. I am working on file size limits so that shouldn't be a problem any more. There are a couple other exceptions but that covers the bulk.

Personally, as long as hte cheats are programmed in, they are fine in my book.I hate those two because they ruin the competition for a game and are difficult to track.

A suggestion: there could be a free comment area on each game, perhaps it could be seen on the same screen as the high scores area.Already added to the next version of the site. I was hoping it would be ready by Feb but things have gone slow, I haven't got much work time in this month so hopefully by March or April now.

Coin-Op in Full Mode will allow you to use dip switches which are powerful cheats. And game genie style cheats but for those you have to program them yourself which is difficult. Press Tab to access the dip switches and cheat menu.

Time questions are hard to answer. You never can tell what kind of issues will come up or how long they will take. If there is a firm deadline then it will just lead to rushing and halfassing to meet it.

These are the 7 items being added to AOX2. 1-5 are finished and #6 is by far the biggest one is nearly finished. It is finished on XP but still needs some work for Vista and Windows 7. #7 on the list will not take too long, comparatively.

Another feature being added for AOX2 is support for Firefox 3.6+ and Chrome, Opera, and Saffari. All still on Windows only of course.

Stupid question time: what do you mean by Sandbox?Read the first post of this tread for a longer answer.

In short. AOX 1 was designed to be ran on RU only. AOX2 is being designed to run on any website so others can use it too. Improved SandBox means improved security which is needed when trusting other websites. A good sandbox is what makes java and flash very secure. And lack of sandbox is what makes windows and web browsers insecure.

About file size. There are several issues.
1. ArcadeOX 1 can not handle files much larger than 20MB. This is being addressed in AOX2 and should be fixed but needs some more testing to be 100% sure.
2. Dial up can not handle large games. Most people have broadband though so this isn't an issue.
3. Bandwidth and file space are limited and expensive. They have to be paid by something. Currently they are paid for by ads and donations. If we added many huge games then that probably would not cover it. I have a solution for this but it will not be available until probably 2011-12.

That means RU will only have a few 20-50MB games this year. In other words 2-5 times are currently largest games.

As I said earlier, AOX2's main focus is being usable on other sites, not just RU. That means if other sites want to use if for large games and have the ability to pay for the bandwidth and filespace then they can. With the possibility of it eventually being used for stuff like Home | Dungeons & Dragons Online (http://www.ddo.com). DDO is nearly the size of a DVD so it is a bit of an exaggeration but was the best example I could think of off the top of my head.

I feel bad for anyone stuck on dial up but at this point I wouldn't even consider them. If it means limiting the rest in some way then it's not worth it. Dial up users should expect problems and just accept them.

I didn't mean dial up users were a consideration just that download speed is part of it. I should have said a 100MB file on a common DSL line will take about 10 minutes to download. That is not so long that it rules it out but it is long enough to matter. My Internet connection which is top of the line for home personal use would download it in about 2 minutes.

I dare suggest:
- MSX games. There are fantastic and exclusive games at his library.
- Handheld simulators. Would be great to compete for points with Game & Watch games. MADrigal's site (http://www.madrigaldesign.it/sim/index.php) have many of them to download.
- Rapid fire option for some arcade games. Mashing buttons frequently isn't funny and do my fingers bleed...

Disregard last sentence. Long live the master Takahashi.
Not so much for my hands, but fine.

Linux support. Once word gets out you'll have a massive bunch of linux users coming to this site ala quake live anyone else cool enough to offer a good service to us.

I'll just mention this again for the heck of it. Being able to watch your competitors play would be super cool.

Also when is ArcadeOX 2 scheduled for release if someone has a date (if not an exact date that's still cool)

Yeah, again, Linux support would be superb. Be great to not be discriminated against for choosing not to give money to evil global corporations such as Microsoft! :P

Yeah! Same goes for that damn Nintendo keeping the Mario games on their systems! Don't forget Sony keeping LBP exclusive, :(

I was just joshing him, I don't care about Mario games enough to want them on another system. Let Nintendo have their fun and hopefully it keeps them alive.

There's a difference between a third party publisher and a first party publisher.

Sega CD Support? Streets of Rage on the Sega CD is so bad ass... Sol-Feace, and Sonic CD...
