Eric Corp Gamer's Retro Uprising Exclusive Review 1: Kid Icarus
12/25/2009 Merry Christmas 2009!
One of the few reviews that will not be released on my site...just to be fair.
Graphics: 4.25/5
The graphics are pretty-good and overall, well animated (kinda). But they could have some backgrounds instead of just plain black. Overall, good for a first-generation NES game.
Gameplay: 3.75/5
Just a vertical side-scroller (weird?) where you shoot arrows at enemies. Pretty good but, I have some problems. The game's checkpoints are so awkward, like when you're far from the previous checkpoint and you die, you start from the previous checkpoint, which is annoying having to do all the same stuff again. Also, your life-bar sucks in the beginning, you get a little life-bar, you barely get any health power-ups, unlike Metroid, and those grim reaper things takes about 1/4 of your life-bar, damn. But overall, still top-notch despite it's problems.
Controls: 5/5
Works well and it doesn't affect the gameplay, at all (at least to my knowledge, I barely have any problems with it, is it me or what?)
Sound: 3.75/5 (Not sure...)*
The music and sound's memorable but, it's the same music over and over again (I don't know if there's other level music in the game)
Replay Value: 4.5/5
Many fans of old classic Nintendo games will come to this, let alone, fans of Metroid, though the checkpoints may annoy some gamers (maybe).
Overall: 4.3/5 = 86%
This game is well worth it, if you like the Metroid engine (which it uses), and the gameplay. If you surpass the awkwardness of the checkpoints, it's worth either playing it online (pretty cool)/getting the real cartridge (which I did)/or get it on Virtual Console (rather get it in real life)
Wow, what a mouthful.
Here's the game, Kid Icarus:

*Please tell me if's there's different level music (other than the ones in the doors and the Grim Reaper-thing's music) so, I can revise.
