Adding memory to my computer.

I am currently trying to add some memory to my computer and have a memory chip.
I currently have a 256 in there and was trying to get to a 1gb.
I know that it is a DDR 2100 that goes into my computer which is what I have for the new chip its a DDR 2100. The issue that I have is when I put the new chip into the computer where it is supposed to go, the hard drive starts up and you can hear it running but the monitor and the mouse do not work. I see the keyboard working because of the lights.

Can anyone out there give me some insite on what is going on?
Also yes everything is plugged into where it should go as well.

If needed the kind of computer hard drive I have is a Sony Vaio PCV-RS 410.

Did you push it in all the way until it snapped in place? Do you hear any unusual beeps when the computer starts? Does it work if you put it back to the way it was?

Yes I put it in there until the snaps went back into place where they should have gone.

I did not notice it make any other noise then what usually happens when it starts up normally.

And when I put the original memory back in it started up with everything working just like normal.

You are putting both in? Try switching the slots that you are putting them in.

If you can look up the specs for your motherboard. Either in the manual or online. It might not support 1gig in a single card or total.

Try booting again and listen for beeps. They are code. You can look up the beep pattern and find the problem. Internal computer speaker needs to be connected though.

I have tried both slots and they do the same thing, I have looked it up online and the comp that I have can hold a max of 1 gig.

I will try to listen for the beeps and see if I hear anything and then see what that is. Or I may just post it here and see if I can get some help on that. Thanks Kong.

The max might not be all in one card. Meaning the motherboard could support up to 1gig total but in 2 512mb cards.

Man I hated installing memory. When I did I got wierd beeps at first then my comp ran so slow I asked my mother to look at it. Turns out one of the memory wasn't in properly thus only have .5 GB instead of 1.5 GB

Kong where would I look for that information? I do not have the manual for it I had someone look up the info for me.

You have to find the make/model of the motherboard and then look up the specs for it. If you have a factory built computer (dell, acer, hp, etc) then if you tell them the computer model number they should know.

Ok thanks Kong. I talked with Best Buy today and they said that I can bring in the Computer for nothing and they can tell me what is needed or if it is wrong what I have as far as the 1 gb.
