Split from previous topic, I wasn't sure why this was in the worker bees thread, I thought maybe it should go into the cartoon character thread, but I made it a new thread.

I'm flattered by your envisioning of me, Tenser. I wish I looked that wicked cool.

However, it's more of a rendition of my avatar, D-Boy, than of me. If you really wanted to give a more realistic rendition a try, you can consider me the real-life Peter Parker, Harry Potter when he's all grown up, or Eric Foreman from "That 70's Show" if he wore glasses. At the moment, I've also got a bit of a soul patch, so you could also consider me the real-life Shaggy from "Scooby-Doo" if he wore glasses. However, my facial hair changes on a weekly basis, so clean shaven is the safest way to go.

Bascially, if they're fair-skinned with moppy brown hair and glasses, you've got me pegged. It's not a hard look to imitate.

Saturday I was perusing F.Y.E. for a birthday present for my step-father. He's a huge Linkin Park fan (can't stand LP) but doesn't own the Jay-Z/Linkin Park Collision Course album. Just by a whim I strolled over to the Dredg section. I found out that Dredg has a live album out that I never knew about called Live at the Filmore! Even better, it was only $9.99 and contained four previously unreleased tracks. Dang skippy, the album is absolutely amazing. The other fifteen tracks span all three of their previous albums and aren't just regurgitated on the album with a crowd for background noise. They're unique takes that show how the band has grown and sound like they came right out or the studio. Amazing buy for any Dredg fan.

Sunday night I watched The Land of Plenty. It's an indie film that came out in 2005 that I've regretted forgetting to watch after it left my VOD selection a long time ago. Thanks to the Acadamy Awards, it was re-released to VOD with a bunch of other movies that have won the indie version of the Oscars, the IFC. It was worth the wait. For any indie movie buff that enjoys thought-proviking cinema I'd highly recommend shelling out the $3.95 to watch it while you can.
Somewhere in Trona, a near-ghost town you pass through on the road to Death Valley, the full extent of Uncle Paul's delusions is demonstrated. And at that same moment, I realized he was the personification of post-9/11 America, raging, raving, striking blindly at false targets, and kidding ourselves that we are safer now that we've invaded Iraq without justification and reelected the worst U.S. president in history. The film promises there may be some hope for us. But only if we have the courage to stand on the edge of the abyss. The line that resonated most for me was that the 3,000 innocent people who died in 9/11 could not have wanted their deaths to lead to more dying. This movie was a masterpiece. It finally offered me a way to think about 9/11 and subsequent events without making me crazy and despairing.

1) It always bothers me modding the NES games. I see all the amazing games with such tiny play counts. There are so many great NES games that most people haven't played. I'm thinking about making a list of the best of the best unknown NES games and doing a contest about them.

2) Last week we were talking about Bugsy's car collection. For the twenty plus years that we've known him, Bugsy has regaled us with tales about his Corvette restoration, his '63 Lincoln Continental Limo and lots of other classic cars that we've never seen and his wife didn't know he owned, until today. So we're sitting there and Tommy makes the following statement, 'Bugsy owns 50 cars. Maybe even more.'

Dougie says, 'No way. I know for sure that he owns fewer than 50 cars.'

Louie Cronin says, 'I know he owns at least one car.'

So Tommy says, 'Bugsy owns 50 cars, maybe more.' Berman says, 'No, no, no, he owns fewer than 50 cars, I know that for sure.' And Cronin says, 'I know one thing, he owns at least one car.'

Only one of these statements is true. How many cars does Bugsy really own?

Wednesday - My Video on Demand went on the fritz. I called up the cable company and they couldn't fix it over the phone. said they'd have to send a representative over to my house but the earliest they could do it is on the 13th, two whole weeks! Now I'm pissy because VoD and the Science Channel are the only two reasons I own digital cable.

Saturday - Went to a niece's cheerleading competition. It's amazing what those high school kids can do. I kind of felt like a pervert there... It was awesome though, one of the girls got in the way of a tumbler and got drop kicked right in the face. Blood was spurting all over the place and she was flopping on the ground like a fish out of water. My niece (Casey) is a spotter which basically means she hoists the girls in the air by their asses. I always make fun of her and accuse her of being a lesbian, then she hits me with her shoe. :( Her school didn't win but they put up a good fight and I'm proud of her. She's a senior and this was her last chance too. She's planning on becoming a gym teacher when she graduates college.

Sunday - Went to the birthday party of the foreign exchange student my sister-in-law is hosting. Her name is Sophie and she's from Denmark and turns 17 Monday. She looks exactly like a Barbie doll and eats anything she wants without gaining an ounce of fat. So jealous....

I re-rented Gloomy Sunday again. I just love the movie. I have it on my DVR now waiting to be recorded onto a DVD. It's just a simply amazing piece of cinema. A German film that subtitled, my wife wont watch it a she refuses to watch any movie with subtitles. It made me laugh, gasp, and almost cry...again.

If you enjoy real movies and not the slop that Hollywood spews out every week I HIGHLY recommend it!
Budapest in the thirties. The restaurant owner Laszlo hires the pianist Andr?s to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires Andr?s to his only composition. His song of Gloomy Sunday is, at first, loved and then feared, for its melancholic melody triggers off a chain of suicides. The fragile balance of the erotic m?nage ? trois is sent off kilter when the German Hans goes and falls in love with Ilona as well.

You're driving in your automobile on a fine spring afternoon in your fair city, and you see in front of you another car with an interesting license plate. And the license plate has 6 characters. They are T-A-N-2-7-0. The question is: What make of car is the license plate attached to?

Two undergraduate chemistry students at a major university had a highly successful semester in an introductory chemistry class. So their confidence is high, so high, in fact, that they decide to blow off their reading period, you know that period they give you to study for final exams. They go to a fraternity party in a town quite a distance away and they have a pretty good time, so good, in fact that they probably got a little drunk, met some girls, who knows.

So good, in fact, that they don't make it back in time for their final exam. They missed the exam. In a panic, however, they devise a plan. They agree to tell the professor that they had a flat tire and this prevented their returning in time to take the exam. They pleaded with him, "Let us take the exam, please. This could ruin us. We promise nothing like this will ever happen again." The professor agrees and tells them to return the next morning. The two return the following morning, and the professor gives them their exam, but decides he isn't going to hang around. He has them leave their books and backpacks in the office and sends them to different rooms to take their exams. The test consists of one five-point question, some molarity problem, and each, smiling confidently, answers the question. Then they turn the page, and the next question is a 95-point question. And our question is: What is the question? What is the question that the professor puts on the makeup exam?

Of course, the second question could have been anything, but with the information you were given, and if you were the professor and you suspected these two of devising, and inventing, and fabricating all of what had happened, you might ask what very question?

Some years ago when my son Louie got his driver's license, he asked to use my truck. He wanted to take a trip to the next town over to visit a friend of his, and I gave him my keys with the admonition, "Don't drive very far because you are not an experienced driver, and I certainly don't want you driving on the highway or out of state or anything like that." And he said, "Don't worry, Dad." Now, being the trusting soul that I am, I didn't bother to write down the mileage or anything like that. I am a fool, and this is the only time I made that mistake. Now, that night he returns and hands me the keys and I go out to the truck and I get inside, of course. And I didn't see anything on the seat or anything like that. It was dark and I didn't turn on the headlights, therefore I didn't see the 5,000 bugs that were smashed against the windshield. But I got in and I started the engine. And again, I had no idea what the gas gauge had read. Like I said, I had no idea what the odometer had read. I started the engine and sat in the truck for maybe a half a minute with the engine running, and I knew in an instant that he had gone much farther than he had said. Much farther from home. The question was, How did I know? And the hint is the Grateful Dead.

Here's the official answer:

When I got in, I turned the engine on, and the tape was playing, the volume was turned up all the way, the song was "Friend of the Devil," I believe. I eject the tape, and upon ejecting it, it goes to default mode, which is the radio. And the radio is tuned to a station that we don't get in Boston. 'Cause what I hear is static. And I realize that he couldn't have had the radio tuned to that station, if he was just going two towns over. He had gone to Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Got a tattoo.

NEW RIDDLE!

Ray: I was struck by the fact that most kids are out of school, or are about to be out of school, for the summer. And less their little brains turn to mush, I thought that this would be a good puzzler for school kids to ponder. Here it is: Potatoes are 99 percent water and one percent what? Potato. So say you take a bunch of potatoes, like 100 pounds of potatoes and you set them out on your back porch to dry out.
Tom: Yeah, when they are dry they should weigh about a pound.
Ray: Well not drying out completely. And as they dry out the water begins to evaporate. And after awhile enough water has evaporated so that the potatoes are now 98 percent water. If you were to weigh those potatoes at that moment...
Tom: They'd be lighter.
Ray: Yes, how much lighter? That's the question. Now you can solve this puzzler algebraically, and I invite our school age children to do this, and anyone else who wants to do this. Now if you don't solve it algebraically, you are going to get the wrong answer.

BRODYMAN

Does density come into play?

I don't know the exact breakdown, but I can only assume that one cc of water weighs more than one cc of dehydrated potato.

If not here are my thoughts:

If 1% Potato and 99% water weigh 100 pounds, then we have 1 lb Potato and 99 lbs water.

1 lb of potato will stay constant as the water decreases:

If the water by volume has decreased from 99% to 98%, as a result the potato by volume has increased from 1% to 2%. For this to happen, either the potato weight would have to decrease, or the water weight would have to decrease. We know the potato weight is constant.

I wish I knew how to set this up algebraically, but my take is that:

where p = potato weight and w= water weight:
for:
1p + 99w = 100 to change

we know that 1p is now 2 % which would make the total weight 50 lbs, 98% of which is 49lbs.

1p + 49w = 50 lbs.

100lbs - 50lbs = 50lbs lighter.

This calls for a new riddle...

A special vehicle was first produced in 1949. It was powered then by a Jeep engine but now uses a Volkswagen engine. It has a base price of fifty thousand dollars. It has never raced but can often be found in a closed course, so to speak. A famous sports celebrity was the first sales representative for this vehicle. What is the vehicle and who is the famous sports celebrity that we know so well.

NO GOOGLEING! THAT'D BE CHEATING!

alright...here goes.

My answer is a zamboni...and the famous sales rep, who the zamboni was named after was Guiseppi Zamboni. He was a famous olympic skater in the 1932 Lake Placid games from Sicily.

He was so distraught over missing a double salchow (which was unheard of in those days) due to unfavorable ice conditions, that he made it his life long dream to learn english, come to America and invent an machine to keep others from having their respective dreams crushed. So with 100 lira to his name and an Italian -> English dictionary, he stowed away in an ocean liner in the summer of 1934 to create a machine to automate the job of "pulisca l'ardesia" as cleaning the ice was called back then in his parts; which literally translates to "cleaning the slate".

After he finished 15 years later and sold his first dozen machines, he sold off the rest of the unused Jeep parts, and was quoted as saying in broken english, about his new invention, and his fulfilling his dream, that he had "wiped the slate clean," which coincidently is where we get that figure of speech today.

Vinny Goombotz decided to do a tuneup on his brother Vinny's car. Which included changing the spark plugs. He knew he read some place that you were supposed to be careful trying to prevent dirt from falling into the spark plug holes. So he tried to vacuum the dirt away with his Click and Clack autographed-model shop vac. And it didn't suck enough. The space was so confined, he couldn't get close enough with his crevice tool to do it. So he decided to remove the plugs very carefully. And then with the plugs removed, he would get that wand in there and vacuum away the dirt so that when he went to put the new plugs back in, no dirt would fall into any of the cylinders. SO, he did this, and the results were, to say the least, disastrous. What happened?

Ray: Many years ago there was this prisoner that was condemned to die.

Tom: It was actually my great-grandfather.

Ray: Right! And the warden came to visit him. And he said to him, "You're done for kid!"

Tom: "You are in big trouble."

Ray: "Tomorrow, you're history. However, being a betting man, I decided that I'm going to give you a fighting chance. You're odds of dying tomorrow are a 100 percent." Am I right or wrong?

Tom: You are right. "When the sun comes up tomorrow, man..."
Ray: "They are going to start warming up the electric chair and you're a goner. So I would like to increase your odds and make them 50 percent that you die and 50 percent that you live." And here's how he's going to do it is, he says: "I'm going to give you two shoe boxes. One box has 50 white marbles, and one box has 50 black marbles. And I'm going to come in tomorrow morning, just after they turn up the juice on the chair, and I'm going to pick a marble. I'm going to be blindfolded, so I can't see the marbles. And I'm going to pick a marble out. If it's white you live and if it's black, you're a goner."

Tom: "Now here's the thing. You can do anything you want with the 100 marbles. There are 50 black ones and 50 white ones. You don't have to leave them in the two shoe boxes as I have. You can put them all in one box. You can divvy them up in any way between the two boxes."

Ray: "But you must use all the marbles; you can't hide them."

Tom: You've got to use all one 100 marbles.

Ray: "Because when we are all done, and I have made my selection, we are going to count the marbles to make sure you've used all of them." So, of course, the person said, "Jeez, this is pretty good. I went from a 100 percent chance of dying down to a 50 percent chance of dying. Can I improve my chances any more?" Now, he was worried that he wouldn't get enough sleep that night, so he started working on it right away. The question is: Can he, in fact, improve his chances of surviving by any more than what they are?

Tom: And what is the best strategy for doing it? And there is no cheating allowed. All the marbles must be accounted for. You can't swallow them or paint them. So he's got to use all 100 of them and they'll be counted afterward.

BRODYMAN

Box 1 = 1 white marble
Box 2 = 49 white & 50 black.

The warden comes in and randomly picks a box, then randomly picks a marble from within. If the it's box 1 there is a 100% chance of survival. If it's box 2, there is still an almost 50% chance of survival. With this layout, he increases his chances to almost 75%.

What is the largest company emblem to have been regularly displayed in ornamental form on a production passenger vehicle? It has to be on the car, not the building -- so the Chrysler building doesn't count. And it's got to be an attachable emblem, so the word Chevrolet painted across the back of the tailgate of a pickup truck doesn't count, either. It's an emblem and it's fixed.

Ray:
An 11-year-old boy is standing at the bus stop, waiting for the bus. The number 12 bus. And it's about 12:30 in the afternoon. And he's standing there with the new fishing rod he just bought.

Tom:
How long is the fishing rod?

Ray:
Five feet. The bus stops and the boy attempts to enter the bus and the bus driver stops him as he puts that first foot in the door and the driver says, "Nah, you can't get on." And the kid asks, "Why?"

Tom:
Wait, how many times did the kid ask why?

Ray:
Just one time. And he says, there's a city ordinance, number 113, which prohibits anyone from carrying packages on the bus longer than 4 feet. And the kid says, "How am I going to get home?" The bus driver says, "That's your problem. That fishing rod is about 5 feet long and I'm booting you out."

Tom:
That's ridiculous! Is this Cincinatti this took place in? They're a bunch of morons.

Ray:
So, he kicks him off the kid stands there bewildered. He says "I'll have to go back to the store and return it." He goes back to the store and they say no returns after 15 minutes. So, he's stuck with the fishing rod and no way to get home. He can't take a cab. He's got to take the bus and the fishing rod is 5 feet long. He walks back to the store again, realizing he can't return it. Five minutes later he's on the bus with the fishing rod. Without altering it, breaking it, sawing it in half, collapsing it. He does nothing to alter the fishing rod. How does he do it?

sabby
03-28-2007, 09:03 AM
The kid finds someone who is over five feet tall (he may be over 5 feet tall, so he would do this himself) who is willing to hide the fishing pole under the back side of his/her clothes. It would probably have part of the pole tucked in their shoe. They would have to walk straight-legged and stand up in the bus until the bus stops at the destination.

BRODYMAN
03-28-2007, 11:57 AM
He hooks the line (with a hook) to the eye closest to the handle, and reels in the line, bending the rod to a point where the arc's chord (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_%28geometry%29) is less than 4 feet, making the "package" now legal for transportation on the bus.

I'm not sure if this is considered "altering" the rod.

:@: Sabby: LMAO, nope.

Now since the rod is ~5' tall, this is actually defined as the package's "height" and not how long the package is, which is it's length. In this context, the package is really only about 3 inches long...sound familiar Ten =} ?

Since ordinance 113 specifically refers to an objects length - "longer than 4 feet" - as opposed to saying "if any dimension is (Longer, taller or wide) greater than 4'.", there is actually no limit to how tall a package can be. Hence, rod on bus.

Stupid ordinance.

Yes, your wife has told me all about your "little" problem there. It's okay though, all men weren't created equal after all.

Let me help you here. No package may exceed four feet in length, width, or depth. If you stand the rod up or lay it down, it still exceeds four feet. You're getting closer though.

Alright let's break this down people:
He did not alter the fishing pole in any way, let that part go, what we need to focus on is the writing of the ordinance, and what he could have done at the store to have them allow him to take it on the bus.

...different stop?

The store where the rod was bought is just across the city line. He walked back and got on at a different stop in the new town, where there is no ordinance preventing the kid from "carrying" the package on the bus. After he gets on the bus he is allowed to re-cross the town line and ride the bus home.

Edit: CRAP, I missed the "same........city" stuck in there....

EDIT2: Alright, now I got it for sure this time. He had the guy at the store repackage the rod in a square box, with the rod extending from one corner to the farthest, so the rod would be a make-shift, shared hypotenuse of two right isosceles tirangles, that make up the square. Using the pythagorean theorem, we know that a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Given that the rod is the hypotenuse is C= 5 ft we know that 5^2 = 25. Since the package is square shaped, we know that A=B so we can take A and B (length and height) to be = 12.5^(1/2) ~ 3.54' which is less than 4' in all dimensions.

Alright here's another math one:

There's a hallway with 100 light bulbs in it. They are numbered in consecutive order of 1 to 100. The kind that attach to basement and attic ceiling with the pull-chain switch. They're normal light switches which only have an on/off setting. Yes, they're all in a single file row and they're all currently turned off.

Now this is a one way hallway, which means any time you go down this hallway you're always starting at the same end and ending at the opposite.

You're going to travel down this hallway exactly 100 times. The first time you go down this hallway you will turn on every single light bulb, one right after the other. The second time you go down, your going to pull every second switch (light bulb 2, 4, 6, 8, etc...). The third time you go down the hallway you're going to pull every third switch (lightbulb 3, 6, 9, etc...). You're going to continue this pattern until you've traveled down the hallway 100 times.

The question is, after your 100th trip, which light bulbs are left on?
BUT THE TRICK IS YOU'RE ONLY ALLOWED TO FIGURE IT OUT IN YOUR HEAD!

Enjoy.

...not exactly...light 4 will definitely remain on.
after the first pass, with every other light it's turned on.
after the second pass it's turned off
on the third pass it remains untouched
the fourth pass turns it back on, and it's never touched again.

Light 4 is one of the lights that stays on.

Lot's of these lights will be toggled many times.

Yeah...that's what I came up with too. But I did it in my head...sort of.

After doing a few in my head, I realized that any number with an even number of factor sets, would remain off, I checked a multiplication table to see what numbers would have an odd number of factor pairs. Then it slapped me in the face when I saw the diagonal line of perfect squares down the middle.

The perfect squares is your answer.

You got it first Kong. Good job. This was an easy one if you wrote it out but that wasn't the challenge. The real challenge was how to approach it where you could solve it in your head. If you approach the problem focusing on one bulb at a time its very solvable, especially when you notice the pattern.

Ray: Back in the old days when my brother used to work, my brother used to have his wife drive him to the train station and then he'd take the train and go to work. Right after lunch he'd get to the train station and his wife would meet him there and they'd drive home. Well one day, he decides to leave work early at 11 am. Needless to say, he gets to the train station an hour early. Rather than call his wife, it's a nice day and he decides to hoof it. So he starts walking in the direction she'll be driving. And low and behold, he sees his wife coming up the road and she sees him by the side of the road taking a haircut. They get in the car and they drive home and arrive 20 minutes earlier. Don't forget - she left home at the usual time.

Tom: Of course, she didn't know he was going to leave work an hour early.

Ray: They get home 20 minutes earlier than they would have gotten home. How long was he walking before they met? Notice, there's no mention of how long she was driving, how fast he walked, what train he took, and what any other the distances were. How long was he walking before she picked him up?

Take a haircut: to accept a valuation or return that is less than optimal.

It's slang, basically It's just pointing out that he might have gotten out of work an hour early but he had to either wait around an hour or start walking because of it.

Needless to say, it has no relevance to the problem or the answer.

At first glance I don't see how you can nail this down without knowing how fast either of them were going, or at least a ratio of their speeds (she traveled 10x faster) but I'll try a guess.

I'm going to say 80 minutes.

His wife does not leave until the normal time - 60 minutes of walking there.

They get home 20 minutes early, where is that time made up, him walking - 20 minutes.

I know that he could not possibly walk/run as fast as a car so the 20 minutes is a little shaky, but I'm almost positive about the hour.

This is assuming that he does not stop walking at anytime during his journey.

Both answers are wrong. There is a way to compute this mathematically. There's no "trick" to this, just finding a way to approach the problem correctly.

Kong
04-03-2007, 07:24 PM
Solve for X
Pick up time at train station = T = 12
Wife departure time = D
Arrive at house time = A
Saved drive time = S = 20
Pick up time at road side = R
Start walking time = W = 11
Time walking = X

T - D = A - T
R - D = A - S - R
R - W = X

Known values filled in:
12 - D = A - 12
R - D = A - 20 - R
R - 11 = X

That was fun and challenging. :)

While your letters and numbers are fun to read, you still haven't answered the question Big D. How long was he walking for?

Like I said about the lightbulb question, you need to approach these differently. It's not about the solution, it's about rearranging your thought process.

My approach for us who didn't take Calc....

WARNING: The answer is in here so don't read it if you want to figure it out on your own.

Because if they arrived home 20 mintues earlier than usual, he saved by walking 10 minutes of her travel time to the station and 10 minutes of her travel time from the station. Therefore, he was walking for 50 minutes when she picked him up. You have to put all of the pieces together. He left an hour earlier but she left at the same time and saves 20 minutes off the total trip. It's as if he moved the station 10 minutes closer. (10 + 50 = 60, 10 + 10 = 20)

Everyone knows that from planet Earth, the moon and sun appear to be about the same size, even though we know they're not the same size (from our vantage point they're the same size) hence we can get things like eclipses. The moon can go between us and the sun and block out the sun and if they didn't appear to be the same size we wouldn't have an eclipse. Now, knowing this, you can take the tip of your finger and at arms length you close one eye and you can block out the sun with the tip of your index finger. However, you go out at night and you hold that same finger up and close one eye and you can't block out the moon. How come?

BRODYMAN
04-03-2007, 08:47 PM
This would happen when the moon is close to the horizon...where the Moon appears larger in the sky.

Since the sun is much farther away, this isn't affected as greatly.

Yes, no?

Kugyince

You're on the right path (sort of) Brody.

You think the Moon appears larger when its near the horizon because you have things in the foreground to compare it with. That wouldn't effect the finger trick.

P.S. The horizon optical illusion also effects the Sun.

So am I also correct in thinking that the whole, "finger at arm's length won't block out the moon" thing isn't always correct?

Are you saying that my finger isn't actually bigger at the horizon as well?

Is the answer that since the moon's orbital path is elliptical, it is closer to the earth at certain times, and as such appears bigger at these times?

1) It will always be correct under normal nocturnal circumstances. You can alter the test in a way to make it work but you would have to intentionally go out of your way to do it.

2) I'm saying that the answer has nothing to do with the horizon optical illusion and that the fact that the same thing happens to the Sun as well makes the point mute anyhow.

3) The ebb and neap of the Moon's elliptical orbit is not sufficient enough to effect this. This point is also mute because the Earth's orbit is elliptical to the Sun as well.

I think the key word here is "nocturnal." I'm guessing that if I saw the moon out faintly during the day, I could block it out with an extended index finger. And maybe, if it were possible for the Sun to be out while it was dark out, I might not be able to block it out with that same extended finger.

I'm guessing it has to do with the amount of light in the sky at a given time...either that or the fact that one is a source, and the other is a reflection...:whatthe:

they're counting someone's innings pitched.

It's common in baseball stats, to write a pitchers innings pitched as:

total innings.extra outs

So, with that said, we have 6, 1, 2, and 3 total innings for 12

plus 2, 1, 2, and 2 extra outs for 2 more total innings and 1 extra out. making 14.1 innings pitched.

A major league umpire enters the subway by walking down the stairs with the assistance of his seeing eye dog. In fact, he had just come from Yankee Stadium where he had worked an afternoon double-header behind the plate. Anyway the dog leads him to the bottom of the stairs at the subway station where he arrives at a cage, behind which is sitting a woman who is the token vendor. And there's a sign below the window that says 'Tokens - 40 cents.' The dog pees on the sign while the guy rummages around in his pocket and through the slit in the cage he hands her a dollar.

No words are spoken. No gestures are exchanged. No little notes handed between them. She has never seen him before and he obviously has never seen her before. She hands him two tokens and 20 cents change. The question is very simply, how did she know he wanted two tokens and not one?

The dog is not involved. Is the fact that he is blind involved? Only tangentially.

Yesterday my boss "volunteered" me to coach our team for the local business league softball season. On the positive side of things is I still get to play. Unfortunately I now have to deal with people bitching about their batting order and field position.

I didn't think it'd be bad until I had a fat man tell me he plays center or nothing at all and another guy who thinks that because he's good, he can blow off practice. Such a headache.

My position? Third baseman, batting 7th. It's all yard from here on out baby!

Good luck on the team. :thumright:

I don't think we're going to be that..."unique". Maybe we can get sponsored by Chico's Bail Bonds though.

Actually there's a story behind that. You see, my boss kind of forgot about the whole league thing until the very last minute. He told me about the whole thing exactly one week before our first game which is this coming Friday. We had 15 people sign up including myself. Since teams can only be of 8 to 12 people by league rules 3 were going to have to be cut. Our first practice was yesterday morning and instead of cutting the weaker players like everyone else would have, I cut the three most irritating players. It wasn't too bad after that. And two of the three jerk-faces actually decided to grow up and help out in other ways. One is now our third base coach and the other is keeping our book.

On a lighter note, I was the big winner in quarter poker last night. Tripled my money.:D

Lets see. What did I do yesterday...

I took the Beast Mother's Day shopping for his grandmother. He picked her out a Tinkerbell lamp which is fine since grandma's crazy over Disney right now. $29 and change.

Then we went to Lowe's and purchased some new gutter brackets to replace the ones that were broken during a nasty ice storm in February. $72 and change.

Later that day, after dinner I DM'd one of my two weekly D&D sessions (the other being Fridays). The Sunday night one is actual campaign style, this one loosely imitating the PoA story-arc from Neverwinter Nights. It's becoming really critical as we're nearing the end of it. Hopefully it will end with one of the PC's becoming a Lesser Deity in my home brew setting.

My little wanna-be blog goes on.

I do gardening on the side mainly because I enjoy it so much. I have a couple of customers that I go to once a month and take care of their lawn and gardens for a few hours. Mowing, weeding, fertilizing, planting and what not. I don't know, there's something really relaxing about it.

After getting all that done I helped my step-father clean up a house his ex-tenents left in shambles. I dislike the work but it always feels good to help other people. Must be the socialist in me. Anywho, the coolest part is his houses are all out in the sticks and come with a lot of land. So we get to pile up all the crap ex-tennents leave like tables and beds in one huge pile and watch the mother burn. I guess I'm one part pyro.

So here's yesterday's summary:
Woke up at 2am
Got to work at 3am
Got out of work at 11am
Took the wife and kid out to lunch.
Gardened for someone from 12pm to 4pm
Went home and made dinner
Went off to help my step-father at 5:30pm
Got home around 7pm
Went to bed around 9pm

Maybe not an exciting life, but its a full and happy one.

I'm in agreement with you Tenser. There is something about gardening that is very relaxing. On the back third of our acre my wife and I are starting a garden this year. Problem is that the land were on is full of *!@$% rocks (been told that it was a riverbed, long, long ago). I already busted my tiller once, snapped the bolts right off. We probably won't see anything this year, but it is very relaxing out there.

:@: Sab: I'm more into flower gardening and landscaping than vegetable gardening. I love fresh sugar snaps from the garden though...

:@: Hobbes: Yeah, I almost always average around 3 to 5 hours of sleep a night. I've been doing it for years and I've grown use to it.

We won our one and only scrimmage 11 to 9 yesterday. I don't think we'll be too bad this year. I also strapped the beast on the bike and we hung out at the library right after work. It was nice to spend some quality time with just the boy and I.

Not to bad. It was just a scrimmage mind you but I batted .333 (2B) 1RBI and a big 'ole E. I was trying to get my RF to back up when a bouncer came at me. My mind wasn't in it and I threw to 1st instead of 2nd for the DP.=}

By your explanation, it was a fielder's choice, not an error. Unless you muffed the throw to first.

Kugyince

Nah, I didn't muff the throw. While it doesn't go down in the book as a big E we're counting bad infielding when it comes to the error kitty.

Also you can never assume a double play, so it's a fielders choice. No E for Ten, but the manager should chew him out, I hope you gave yourself a stern talking too when you got to the dugout.

I've got a lot of catching up to do.

Friday - Yeah, the game was a mess. We wouldn't have done nearly as bad if it wasn't for our poor out-fielding. Singles and fly-outs were turned into doubles and triples. That'll be the biggest thing we need to work on.

Saturday - Right after work I went and raked my mom's lawn. For one reason or another, it was never raked in Fall. Thirty-one bags of leaves in all. After that, the wife went to bingo so I stayed home with the boy, helped him with his homework for pre-school, and after we ate popcorn and watched cartoons together.

Sorry, you had problems in the outfield, if I was closer, I'd help ya out, unless it is an employee only team.

I start softball practice (I think it's a practice) on Thursday. The glove has been dusted off, the cleats have been shined up(not really, I did manage to get all the dry dirt off of them though), and the bat is at the ready. I know I'm starting in either Center or Left Field, just not sure where they are going to put me in the lineup. If I start stretching now, I might be ready physically.:p

Saturday continued -
We usually have poker night on Saturdays but a cousin of mine was in labor for most of the day, she's also the older sister of one of the other regs, so we called it off.

We did try to make up for it with some online poker in pogo.com. Pogo's an interesting gaming site that my wife's addicted to. It's also where I stole the whole badge idea from. If anyone's interested in playing some poker on there let me know, though you do have to pay for a membership there.

While playing poker online (after the boy was to bed) I received a call from my aunt saying there were complications during birth. He had dislocated his right shoulder during the birthing process and it was discovered that he had defecated in the amniotic sack and feces had entered his lungs. Sunday he was transported to Albany Medical Center which is a really amazing hospital that we're lucky to live within an hour from (Newsweek ranked it 23rd in the country). I got a final call Tuesday night saying that baby Jacobb was finally out of the woods and will hopefully be going home today or tomorrow.

Sunday - We were woken by a phone call from my sister-in-law Tammy. Apparently the prom is a short time away and she had five high school girls who needed to go to the mall and pick out shoes for their prom dresses. One of which was her own daughter while the other four were foreign exchange students (Tammy's the school librarian). The problem being she could only accommodate four in her small vehicle. We agreed to bring one of the girls in our car since we wanted to go to Home Depot, which is near the mall, anyways. So the day was consumed up mostly with driving. Forty-five minutes westward to Canajoharie where Tammy lives. Then about ninety minutes eastwards to Albany where the mall is, and then all back again. On the positive side, I did manage to grab the materials needed to repair the garden fencing.

We left around 10 a.m. and got back home around 5:30p.m., just in time to host some D&D at 6p.m.

Monday - The majority of the day (after work) was spent repairing sections of the welded wire garden fencing that was destroyed during the winter months. About 75 feet of it out of 300 feet needed to be replaced or mended. I was able to mend/replace about 2/3 of the damage before the sun started to set. Spent the rest of the time watering the lawn.

Tuesday - After work I finished mending/replacing the last 1/3 of the damaged fence. Still feeling energetic I tackled the basement and completely cleaned it out. Nice and productive day, good times.

There, now I'm all caught up. :D
