8 Eyes

Alright, we need to put up some good scores in the arcade so new comers don't assume we're a bunch of sissies here. So every week I'll be going in alphabetical order on the NES arcade.

This will be the rule for every one of these contests.

1) I'm allowed to participate, as their are some high scores that I will defend vigorously. So As Jaden Yugi would say, "Get your game on."

2) Each contest will end EXACTLY one week after I post it. Meaning if I post the contest at 10:53pm EST on a Monday, it'll end the next Monday at 10:52pm EST. So please pay attention to the post dates.


Points will be awarded as such:
10th - 100 points
9th - 200 points
8th - 300 points
7th - 400 points
6th - 500 points
5th - 600 points
4th - 700 points
3rd - 800 points
2nd - 900 points
1st - 1000 points

So you see it's worth posting all of your scores, not just your best one. Good luck. Who ever has the most total points at the end of the contest will get something extra.

I've noticed these contests usually end up with two people gunning for each other. 1943 had Chubbs and I. World Runner had TMT and Sabby. Now 8 Eyes is pitting me against my own teammate.

Well that's the idea behind DDQ. There will always be one of us who excels at a particular game.

Just wait until next week with Abadox. The scores I can put up with a shooter genre are the kind that give everyone that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Hey, I got accused and ripped for farming (Tenser, does Spartan X 2 ring a bell), all accusations of course were false (kept dying at the same place). I'm not saying it's right or wrong but let's be consistent.

Hey, I've learned my lesson a while back.

I figured out what went wrong!

I submitted my lower score on stage 14 while you submitted your higher score by stage 6. Someone was farming. :p
No rule against that.

Also boys, I have never farmed myself. I might have figured out which enemies give away the most points and actively saught them out but every time I've played I attempted to get as far into the game as possible. I don't have the time nor patience to farm. I was tempted though. I did find a choice spot that you could farm for 2,500 points a rip.

Funny. I didn't see you say a thing when your own teammate admitted to farming.

The fact is there's nothing I can do to prevent farming. Even if I made it a rule I couldn't prove it. This gives you two options.

1) Live with it.
2) Remove any NES game from the arcade that doesn't scroll or have a timer.

Personally I would go for the later but I don't think Kong would want to lose so many games from the arcade.

This brings up another situation that we'll have to deal with next week with Abadox. While doing some homework on Abadox on gamefaqs I found out that the game has a code that gives you complete invincibility. How do you boys want to deal with this?

We can trust everyone not to cheat (yeah right). If you can check if they cheated, disqualify them from the whole competition and give them an infraction worth like...3 points or something. We could also...gulp....skip it.

I see both points of your argument Ten. I wasn't trying to start anything but so much for that. I never accused you of farming (nor will I ever, way too much respect), I remember that post in the Kong Contest.

As for the two options, I think the mods are overworked as it is but it wouldn't be a bad idea to take those selected games out of the high score arcade only. I also think that games where you have to spend points to advance should be taken out (Amagon, R.C. Pro Am II for example).

As for the issue with Abadox, it would be the same as if we played Contra and put in the 30 life code, my vote is skip it and move to the next.

I hate farming, by anyone, and I'll call anyone out who does it. I think it goes against the "spirit of the game", but I'm not going to get to worked up about any of this, we are talking about video games here after all. I'm just saying I don't farm, ever, and I would expect other high level members to not cheat or bend the rules either.

Leave in Abadox, let people know that we know about the code and tell them not to use it. (Can you see your score after you die? That way we would know if they used the code).

Again we are talking about games here, they are supposed to be fun.

Well then, I say you just set in the rules of the tournament that it must be a game over or death screen for this one. If they submit without the game over screen, then that is there own fault for not reading the rules and they won't get credit for the tournament. Seems fair.

As far as farming we will be going with Tenser's option 1 - Live with it. There is no way to police it and to do option 2 would mean deleting half of the NES high score games and doing tons of research to determine which ones should be deleted.

I think this would be too complicated for normal users but for the contest I would say it should be added to the rules.

The high score NES games are only capable of verifying the score on the submit screen. You have to think of it as a contest to get the highest score on that screen using what ever is at your disposal. Some people will be trying to exploit the technical limitations. You can join those people or rise above them but trying to stop them won't accomplish much.

You could put in the Konami code and get the Contra High Score or you could try getting it legit and have more pride in your final score. Either way it is your choice and acceptable according to the rules.

Does the screen in Abadox show how many lives you have left? I think we can police using the code this way.

If you have any more than 1 life remaining, or are not in a "game over" screen, then the score doesn't count. Simple.

If you find a way to farm, more power to you.

IT does if you die, it shows a screen that tells how many lives you have left and what level your on. with Game over, it never shows you a final score, so you'll have to snap it just as you die :(

I think we can wrap this up seeing as how Jeckel sucks like that. You could have at least kept it close, punk kid.

First place - Jeckel - 4,300 points and a contest win
Second place - Hobbes - 800 points
Third place - Kraemer - 300 points
Fourth place - Tenser - 100 points :(

This probably should have been explained before hand but in 8 Eyes:
You can change what country you start in and there is an optimal pattern like there is in Mega Man.
You have to hit the levers to open doors.
You have to hit the bad guys then run away and wait while they try to hit you then repeat.
You can use your bird to fight. Press Up + A. Press Down + A to make the bird dive.
There are lots of hidden things in the walls.
You can press start to change your special weapon.
Press Up + B to use the special weapon.

I went to get a walkthrough, not to use it but I know they always have the part when they tell you the controls of the game. I was all good after that.

Should I include tip and tricks in these contests? My theory has always been if you're too lazy to look it up, you're too lazy to win anyways.

It is a contest. People need to figure it out on their own. If they want help, they can either ask a teammate, or ask someone they think will tell them. Sometimes, it truly comes down to skill. You either have it or you don't.
