I mean look at the 80s. First there was Sonic The Hedgehog it was a hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But if you look at the newer games, they got mixed reviews some even have poor reveiws like Shadow The Hedgehog, and Sonic And The Black Night. Look at those.

It started in 1991, not the 80s. And this isn't exactly a forum game, more of a chat page.

I moved this to RU games because it isn't a forum game. Well, if it is I don't understand it.

I know where the series went, down the toilet, its just a game that doesnt translate well into 3-D
and no matter how they try, its not gonna work

Funny how Nintendo made Mario so well into 3D yet Sega couldn't with Sonic.

Now I'm not a Sonic fan (nor a Mario fan) but Sega can and does make some excellent titles. I wonder what it is about Sonic that just doesn't work.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games sold over 12 million copies though...

I am not a Sonic or a 3D fan but I played Sonic Unleashed for about 5 minutes on a store demo last week. It seemed to be a decent game that combined the original Sonic gameplay, that worked in the 90s, with modern 3D style. From my 5 minutes of play I would recommend it to anyone that wants to play one of the original Genesis style Sonics in 3D. It's not for me but they seem to have done a good job.

Right. I'm not trashing the new Sonic games its just that many people say most of the new games are bad and sadly I'm one of those people. Now I mean I HATE the newer games I just think the old ones were better

I expressed my opinion on this on the "sonic or mario" thread.
I love sonic as I was brought up on him, but his newrgames - post mega drive (genesis) are rather rubbish, it just isnt the same.
Sonic used to be cool and badass in a "shaft" sort of way but now hes all corney, chirpy and too happy.
BRING BACK MOODY MISRIBLE SONIC.

Funny how Nintendo made Mario so well into 3D yet Sega couldn't with Sonic.

It's because Sega didn't do it fast enough. They cancelled Xtreme, and that was the beginning of his downfall. They get rid of a good game and replaced it with *shudder* Sonic Adventure.

I'm still sticking with The Newer Sonic The Hedgehog games being bad.

That is so true.I have to admit, everytime I play a 3d mario game I think it is amazing and then when I play a 3d mario game on a newer console it's even more amazing.
And this is coming from a guy who always hated mario as he thought his games were boring and used to be a huge sonic fan.But now sonic is lame.Literaly.

The Sonic Adventure games are the exception to the 3D rule. The problem is that sonic has always been a "run mindlessly" game, and when you try changing that while incorporating his speed, it doesn't work well. However, if they look at the Sonic Adventure games, they may be able to change it.

The worst sonic game I have played must be the one where you are racing (well running really)
I cant remember what its called, its 3d and its on the PS2 collection game "Sonic Gems"

I see the problem as Sonic was based off of a gimmick. About being fast and "running mindlessly" and Sega's old "blast processing" which they never fully explained. All blast processing meant is that the Gen's processor was faster than the SNES'. Once the gimmick wore itself thin (processing speed keeps increasing every new console generation) SEGA had to incorporate other gimmicks to replace that one.

Mario is full of gimmicks as well. The difference being Mario was always based off of a platforming experience with tight play control. While still a gimmick, its one that carries over well from generation to generation. Just my two cents though.

The problem is the polish has been lost. In Sonic Adventure 2, the best 3D game, and one of sonic's greatest games, the speed is a gimmick, but there is a level of polish there. However, newer games lack that, and that's where it went wrong.

sonic R, as it is called, isn't a bad game once you get the hang of the controls (yes, that is a cliched phrase, but it is true). besides, it is the ONLY sonic game ever where it's entirely racing on foot (okay, amy and eggman use vehicles, but they suck).

Well i think that sega is actually staying with the original gameplay but different storyline while mario has different gameplay and same storyline.every game of mario,he saves the princess,it's always been like that.i got over mario a long time ago and went to the sonic side of things and liked it.but that's just my opinion.

Sonic adventure was great, run around like normal. The storyline, I could do without.

Sonic Xtreme was nearly finished, some head guy quit and took away the rights to finish it, don't quote me on this, I may be wrong. Anyways, like you'd expect, some people finished it and posted it online, there is several youtube videos on it, speaking of which... it looks like mario galaxy was ripped from sonic X-treme.

@Kong, from what I've heard, your led to believe sonic unleashed is good, then you don't get hardly any more run-around levels, it's all sky chases and fighting, combat style.

Whoa. Never knew THIS article would be revived. (Meaning talked about again)

The stories are also taking themselves seriously. The older games had a level of parody, mocking anime cliches, especially DBZ. Now they seem to be more of a DBZ rip-off than a parody.

It's a pretty nice game, the music is pretty cool too.

I personally think that Sonic Heroes was the worst game ever. I mainly just stick with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle - my favorite sonic game. BTW, does anyone else here like the chao gardens?

You don't have to, here's a review for you. It'll give you a good idea of how bad it is:
