View Full Version : what should we add next - part II
Last time (http://retrouprising.com/support/ru-news/ru-polls/what-system-should-we-add-next/t2566) we added 2000 Coin-Op games and Atari 2600 and are working on improving score submissions and adding Coin-Op scores.
What should we add this time?
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Atari 5200 and http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Atari 7800 - ArcadeOX Only - No Java
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Sega 32x - ArcadeOX Only - No Java - An add on for the Sega Genesis that plays about 30 different games in 32bit graphics
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Amiga - ArcadeOX Only - Computer games from the mid-80s. I'm not positive this is possible. It will take some experimentation, research and trial and error.
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Choose your own adventure books - Scanned copies of old game books. These are lots of reading. If you want to fight the dragon turn to page 87. If you want to try running away turn to page 12.
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif2-XL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-XL) - Old educational robot from the 70s-80s that asked multiple choice questions via an 8-track tape.
http://retrouprising.com/images/misc/wikipedia_icon.gif Laserdisc video game - I think I can get these to work online but there may be some unforeseen complications that could make it impossible. Like the Amiga this will take some research and trial and error without guarantee of success. They would have to be done one at a time which means it could take a quite while to get them all online. Maybe as slow as only one or two a month. But, man, they would be cool!
Add more Flash games and add score support to Flash games that do not save scores yet.
None - Don't add anything just continue working on improving the games and systems we already have.

Well Konnger you know what gets my vote. The PC/System with many of the best games ever made, the Commodore Amiga.
From RPG's like The Bard's Tale & Ultima series, to Cinemaware games (ie. King of Chicago , The Red Baron, Sinbad And The Throne Of The Falcon, Defender of The Crown); to classic Sierra quest games; to Adventure games (i.e. Deja Vu, Zak McKracken); to near perfect laser disk game ports (i.e. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace); to Real Time Strategy games (i.e. Dune I&II, Overlord, Lord of the Rising Sun); to some of the best pinball games ever released in the home; to the Psygnosis games (i.e. Obliterator, Barbarian, Shadow of the Beast), Amiga nearly had it all!

Kong, if the Amiga ultimately gets the nod and is enable able, laserdisc games might be somewhat redundant because the Amiga released many of the major laserdisc games made (i.e. Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Cliffhanger), but they might be easier to put on the site because they were originally on disc. They even released sequels to Dragon's Lair and Space Ace (with additional levels and some old levels combined). There are a few cool laserdisc games, like Hologram Time Traveller & Badlands, that would be lost, but at least most could be put on here (if Amiga can work on R.U.).

I voted for the Commodore Amiga. A machine that was way ahead of it's time and still has one of the best libraries of great game titles to date. I would take the time to try and list some of them but it's a pretty substantial list. Winnebagel already mentioned a "few" of the cooler titles that were produced on the Amiga, but there are many more...
Laser Disk

It's true they are not 100% side by side exactly the same. However, I was just trying to say that if laserdisc doesn't work, it might be a way to add some of these games still. For many games Amiga is the definitive version (i.e. Dark Castle) and other versions had to be ported to other systems to play them, but of course the laserdisc games took massive amounts of memory, so they would be a bit tougher.

Yeah Cam, the AmigaCD32 came out after the Amiga computer. The CD system only had a few dozen games on it, as it was only on the market for something like 6-7 months.
The Amiga computer system is the one that I, and several others on R.U., are always hyping. It had hundreds of awesome games and was on the market from 1985-the mid 90's. Some of the games were enhanced versions of Commodore 64 games, but then a lot were original games, and arcade games.
Yeah, it seems like people keep asking this Kong. Can we (Mods) update the FAQ?

I have always been surprised at how popular 32X seems to be. I have one, but there were only a few games on it. I will admit some were good, and it would be cool to see that here, but I don't think the 32X had nearly as much to offer as Sega's other systems. I did like Star Wars and MKII on the system, though.

I hear you. That was kind of my thought. I still like the system. I especially played Star Wars Arcade, MKII (Gamenguru and I played it for at least 500 hours back in the day), Virtua Fighter II, and Kolibri. It makes sense though that it would be one that could be added quickly and boost the game choices relatively painlessly.

No. 32X did have the power to handle something like Dragon's Lair. 32X was okay, but it was essentially a souped up Genesis. It was a cartridge system, so it basically was Genesis with more colors.

I liked a lot of the old Laser Disc games, but my favorites were the Don Bluth ones (Dragons Lair series and Space Ace series).
I won't mind seeing Sega 32X and more Atari (at some point). Remember the Amiga CD32 is not the system in the poll. The CD32 was a very short lived system with only a few games. It only lasted about 6 months. The Amiga on the list is the Amiga computer which was out for 9 or so years and produced many of the best games ever made.

I agree, but I think people see Sega and just choose that because they know it. As an Amiga owner (or at least an owner until the thing finally gave up the ghost), I know that it is one of the greatest gaming machines ever created, but what can you do? Kong did have a good point, though: 32X should be very easy to enable, then hopefully the second choice can be worked on. Of course I hope that will be the Amiga, and I hope it will be technically possible to emulate (I know it will be time consuming, but hopefully possible as it is great) but regardless, at least 32X will be enabled and done.

I think we should use this polls results to choose the follow up system. From the wikipedia link 32X only has 32 games anyways. Also it says they only sold 200,000 systems, is that accurate? If so what a fantastic waste of time this will be.
I vote we close this and add the 32X to get it over with. Then move on to the amiga since there's obvious interest in it.

That's probably about right. The 32X was basically a quickie idea Sega came up with to try to prolong the Genesis' life cycle. It was mostly a sales failure. To its credit they did manage to produce a few quality games like Star Wars Arcade, a good version of MKII, and a good shooter called Kolibri (you played as a hummingbird). Other than that, the 32X had very little to offer IMHO. I think it would be a quick way to boost the game/system count on the site, though.
If the Amiga can eventually be added, I think I will be in Nirvana for awhile. It had some really nice stuff. The challenge will be adapting it for R.U. I think. I know there are a few decent emus out for the Amiga, so hopefully that will help. In my mind there isn't a much higher choice for hardcore retro gamers (at least PC anyway) because those that played the Amiga typically turned into little cultish groupies (I count myself as one of these). It was the gaming choice back in the day for people who were looking for quality graphics and hardcore game play. :)

That makes sense, and I agree that 32X is probably the best next choice to add. However, I bet there are a lot of other Amiga cultists (-aka- soul slaves) lurking out there waiting for someone to feature Amiga games. There are a bunch of sites our there devoted to Amiga already, but most of them are retrospective sites. I have never seen one that offers anything like what R.U. does. I think a lot of people would come out of the woodwork if R.U. managed to get them working.
By the way, Amiga definitely had some nice enhanced C64 games.
Here are a few examples of the difference between C64 and Amiga versions. These are more commonly known arcade games. Of course there were tons of C64/Amiga exclusive games as well.

I'm kind of bummed to hear that, but I knew it would be a logistical challenge to get those emulators to work in Arcade OX. I know the Amiga uses simulated kick starts and things like that, so it would be difficult. I will keep hope in my heart that this might be possible one day, but life goes on anyway. :)

There are some windows games that would work. I don't know how many good ones though.

I would have to buy the books off of ebay, scan them, and then make a system for jumping to the correct page.
When I said weak I didn't mean anything about your effort to add them. I meant I doubt many people would care and it might be a dud.

I still think that the laser disk games would be the best to add on the site. Then we could have the laser disk of Dragons Lair the way that I remember it. Along with a bunch of other awesome games.

MSX, C64, or Intelli.
Belmontzar
08-18-2009, 04:34 AM
MSX 1 I have never heard of..
c 64 and Dos Id like to see...
Choose your owns I like but not sure how it would work on a program..
2XL and Laser disk also sound cool, but again I have no idea what they are..
Virtual boy; that Red screen? plus its supposed to be motion related..... no
Intellevision: yeah.. this is good^^
More flash is always good.
old radio: HITCHHIKERS GUIDE FOR THE WIN! (RU +marvin the paranoid android? HELLS YEAH)
VCR games? Know what they are but have no idea how the would work.. 0.o
HACKS and translations are cool
Well those are my thoughts..
Making sure everyone understands the choices.
MSX 1 - games similar to ColecoVision. Java and ArcadeOX will be supported. No Scores.
Comadore64 - because it was a computer and not a console there will be some load times and confusing menus. Java and ArcadeOX will be supported. No Scores.
DOS - games similar to ColecoVision. Some people may find starting games to be confussing. Java and ArcadeOX will be supported. No Scores.
Choose Your Own Adventure Books - You get to choose how a story turns out. Just reading. No scores.
2XL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-XL) - Kind of like an audio version of choose your own adventure. Lots trivia questions and corny humor. Flash. No scores.
Laser Disk - Stuff like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. The real thing not the watered down console ports. They will be added one game at a time. Flash and score support.
Intellivision - Similar to ColecoVision. The controller looked kind of like a calculator. It had plastic overlays that you had to put over the controller that explained what each of the many buttons did. Most of the game will be awkward on a keyboard . Java and ArcadeOX will be supported. No Scores.
Virtual Boy - This is the 3D Nintendo System. It was very unpopular and only has a few games. It will be even worse in 2D. It is mainly just a novelty. ArcadeOX only and scores.
More Flash Games - Obvious
Old Radio Shows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old-time_radio) - Like War of the Worlds. Stuff that your grandparents listened to before there was TV. Flash audio.
VCR Games (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/12329) - You have to play them in groups and they are much more like the Wolf Forum game than a video game.
More hacks and translations of games for systems we already have.
None - Improve the existing systems before adding more
You can suggest other stuff. Of course stuff like 3DO, Sega CD, Playstation and Xbox are not going to be added. If it has a CD or is less than 10 years out of development then the answer is no.

well, old pc games is still something I'd like if possible, My Gramps has sim city 2000 on his old windows 95 pc at the lake, It came with the computer, I like the game a lot.
... If you can add pc games, even really simplistic ones, it would still be one great acomplishment, I think it should be looked at for the future, whether it's in a month or (a) year(s), it would still be wicked.

Why not just buy simcity2000 for like 9.99? I swear I saw it recently bundled with other sim games and the whole thing was 9.99 or 14.99. I think old PC games would be a waste when they're so easy to get in stores or by downloading.

When old Pc games are mentioned
Does this mean games like Broken sword?
because that game is old, its over a decade old.

Descent on DOS eh, cool.

Yeah it would be cool but there's other retro systems that would be cooler to add way before PC. PC has a gigantic library of games but like I said they aren't hard for most people to get, for free or cheap. It wouldn't really improve the site overall imo. I think it would clutter it up with tons of lame games that I see in the bargain bin at target.

I suppose, someday, it should be added though...
Knowing how much time each will require should help with narrowing down the list.

That's kind of how I felt about 32X. I see it as an almost useless system, However, I guess if as many retro systems as possible are to be added, I suppose Virtual Boy would qualify. I don't know how it would look in 2-D, though.

That's what I mean, it's one thing to add it purely for the nostalgia but it's almost useless when it comes to actually playing it. I think it should be a very low priority.

I agree with that point, but I think as the updates happen these things will eventually be ticked off the list one by one. I see them as eventualities regardless of my feelings about them.
If it was up to me, I would go straight to adding as many retro computers as possible, as many of the best retro games were on those. I can understand that the technology is easier said than done sometimes, but that would be my personal top priority.

Yeah, I think every one voted for 32X because it had the name Sega in it versus anyone really knowing what was on the system (except for people like Gamedoy who seems to realllllyyy like 32X).
At first, I kind of was reluctant to donate when the 32X was the goal, but ultimately I donate to help out Kong and RU more than for what the next goal is, so I did. I have to admit if Amiga had been a possibility I probably would have funded the entire project myself, but even without that, I still want to try to help out as much as possible.

YEah^^ just liek with arcade Ox appearng, there might end up a more detaield version that will run even faster and be even better. As new file types emerge, things once hought impossible, become VERY likely. THE fact people are TALKING about MSX and the DOs games beign added Really blows my mind.. To me they feel like somethign still, oddly new or shocking. that those games COuld and MAY appear on this site. almost $#*^ a brick when I played the Arcade version of super puzzle fighter two, and saw it was the SAME speed as my saturn version @.@. I know. It's so painful. EC 2 was one of the best fighting games of all time, and easily had the most complex story of any fighting game I have ever played (only rivaled by the MK series). Then the game went on to outsell SF II on the Genesis, but do they make another one? No! They had to focus on Virtua Fighter. :curse:
