Has anyone experienced a film in a IMAX theatre yet? If so, what was the experience like compared to conventional theatre screen?

My girl said she is taking me to a IMAX show in a week or two. She claims that it is the best thing ever!.... for watching movies of course.

IMHO, it is the best experience you can have in a theatre. The large screen format and awesome sound makes movies awesome. I have seen about 10-12 things in Imax. Mostly they were documentaries, but they looked and sounded amazing. As far as movies, I saw 300, Spider Man 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Fantasia 2000, and a couple of others. They were each absolutely stunning! Do you know what you are going to go see? Incidentally, if you don't mind my asking, what state is the theatre in? I have gone to a few in Florida, and they were great. I ask because you can generally look up the theatre you are going to go to and see if it has all the features it should have. I hope you enjoy the Imax experience!

everything i have seen in imax has been documentary based, some movie about deep sea diving, everest, nascar...i have never seen a widely released movie in imax...i'm not entirely convinced that an imax format would be worth the extra driving distance for me...but if you have an imax theatre that is readily accessable, then go see it.

In Michigan there is one at the Detroit Science Center, Henry Ford Museum and I believe there is one close to where I work here in Ann Arbor. I think my girl is looking into what shows are playing. She said she wants to take me because I've never gotten the experience yet. I'm really starting to look forward to this. :)

300 would be great to see on a "better" screen!

I thought that was what IMAX meant. I saw the third Matrix on an IMAX screen. It was flat. It wasn't much different than a regular movie. I was disappointed the second time.

If you can get a dome screen that covers all perfial vision.

I agree that the dome theatre is best. When I can, I go to the M.O.S.I. (Museum of Science & Industry) in Tampa, FL. It has a monstrous curved screen, and killer sound. There are a couple of large format IMAX screens in Orlando, but they are not domed. I think they are still impressive, but the dome is best. I saw Spider Man 3 at the Orlando one. Even though it was just a really big regular screen it was very cool to see Spidey swinging between buildings on a 2 1/2 story screen.

I highly recommend M.O.S.I. though. The sound and size of IMAX is unparrelled.

Yeah I remember school field trips to the Detroit Science Center and they had a crazy huge dome film screen. It too had the seats that reclined back a little. But apparently, from what I've been told, the Imax is similar, but not the same. I guess I'll be able to make the comparison for myself soon here... I'm kinda excited. >:D

yeah, ive been to the IMAX before. the £D stuff is much better thatn at any other cinema, practically the whole film jumps out at you, and that doesn't happen so much in other cinemas. then theres the size of the thing, yet you still dont miss a thing - the one nearest me is supposedly the size of a soccer pitch, curved slightly. damn, now i need to go there again!

Yeah, the thing that makes IMAX IMAX by definition is the projector itself. IMAX can be put on screens of varying size, but the best are the massive ones.

I saw an IMAX movie dealing with marine life whose title I can't remember but I am pretty sure it was National Geographic.
The fish were swimming in between me and the people in front of me, and I had to tilt my head to the side occasionally to allow a shark to pass by.

Kong, I am trying to think of what happened when you went to see those shows that prevented you from having the full-on 3D experience I had.
I remember having to wear special glasses (not red and blue) which had some sort of polarized lenses, and that when they started the show first there was a test screen which was not 3D at all, but shortly after when the feature presentation started it was.
I am thinking maybe there is some sort of a switch for going between regular projection to the 3D effect?
Maybe some sort of malfunction or mistake?
I have to agree with what some of you say about the sound quality being vital to the IMAX and other theatre experiences.
I recently read about a virtual Niagra Falls, using a giant screen (probably IMAX) and the usual digital sound system of course but the REALLY neat item was the addition of something called a ROTARY SUBWOOFER.
This is an amazing new technology capable of producing infrasound and ultra low frequency sound at incredible, no FRIGHTENING sound pressure levels.
I know you might say 'no way' but, yeah this thing goes all the way down to 1HZ with nearly flat freqency response!
Yes, I want one.
I wonder what 'Mash up da place', 'Ali Baba', 'Bass, I love you', and maybe 'Deathray' would sound, no, feel like since this thing OPENS AND CLOSES DOORS WITH INFRASOUND.
Those of you who cannot afford the nearly 18 thousand dollars to buy one may want to check out the poor man's alternative, the MTX JACKHAMMER, a 22 inch subwoofer whose specs I don't know but an audiophile I know said:
"It's insane."

Sez, you have them too. Some of the Odeon theatres have IMAX screens. It is called ODEON IMAX in Manchester. There are also screens in other places like Wimbledon and Greenwich. I don't know how close this is to you, but I looked up one in Manchester, and it looks like this is the address:

IMAX films are awesome. It looks like yours is playing Transformers 2.

No problem Sez. It's definitely worth a trip to see an IMAX movie. It's hard to imagine just how good the picture is until you have a chance to see it for yourself. Very wicked indeed! :)

I also saw one of those science/nature movies on the giant domed screen when I was a kid. I remember being very impressed. I'm glad to hear about the normal Imax being just a large fleet screen, I've save my money for a domed one.

The large screen (non domed) can still be impressive (better than a regular theatre for sure), but the dome is definitely the way to go. When I saw 300 on the domed screen it was awesome because it completely covered my field of vision, so the battle scenes were amazingly epic.

The IMAX at The Henry Ford was amazing! I couldn't believe the size of the screen, and the sound/audio was spectacular! They told me to get there up to a hour early for best seating. My g/f and I did get there about 1 hour early and they made everyone wait in line FOREVER!!! I didn't like waiting!

But yeah, the IMAX experience was awsome and so was the show. >:D

I'm kind of a antsy person, and usually don't enjoy sitting in a theatre, but the Imax is much better then the conventional theatres I'm familiar with.

Has anyone scene a 3D film at the Imax yet? I'm considering checking it out.

Im awfull in any sort of movies,
I talk all the way through it, and if someone tells me to "shushhh", I tell them to "shushhh!"

Last film I went to see was "Angels and demons"
Now Ive read the book before so I brought my fella because he hasnt read it. But he fel asleep halfway through,But to make a long story short I kind of ruined the film for him by telling him everything that was gonna happen.
