Best place to move = the house next door to mine >=)
Wouldnt your criminal record keep you from coming into ANY country (yes even Somalia hehe)?
NOT REALLY!! Its like finding an ice-cream bar in a volcano.
I don't know about apartments.
Everything.
I don't know, I'm not a drinker >=)
With a name like Sarah Clark, I doubt it >=)
I don't know any Brits.

Also, why did you put seztheyank?

yes people, im thinking of moving to america in the future in a few years.
not forever but for like 2 years or somthing
i dunno where though, so i was wondering if any of you could give me any advice?Sure just ask.
wheres the best place to move? For you I'd suggest a big city. Small towns in the US tend to be full of ignorant morons that you might end up getting trouble because of(fighting, ect).
would my crinimal record effect me coming into the country? Possibly, what were you charged with again? PM me if you don't wanna say publically.
is it easy to get a job? Sure, if you have some kind of education. If not McDonalds will hire you.
how much is rent for a apartment? (nothing special, just liveable) This varies depending on where you are. In Massachusetts you're looking at $700-1,000 a month for a cheap place.
what shouldnt i do in america that may offend you americans? Don't insult the US unless you know the people somewhat. Other than that I can't see anything different than people you'd meet in your country.
what are the bars like? Typical I'd think. People like to go and drink with the hopes of meeting someone. Where I live most people my age go nightly unless they are married/involved.
will i make friends? You're female and british, yeah you'll be fine. The only thing that might hurt your chances is the ICP thing. From my experience most people either love them or hate them. It's not a huge deal but I wouldn't bring that up when you meet people.
are there many brits over there? Well considering most Americans have british ancestors I'd have to say yes. We may sound different but we're very similar to you blokes and birds. If you mean true brits then maybe not so much. I know a couple but not a lot.
i have many more questions
i feel a bit scared thinking about it. Like I said ask away and I'll be glad to answer
@Somedude, if you didn't know Yanks is the term Brits use for people from the US. We're yankees.

wheres the best place to move? somewhere in south central America (like Kansas Oklahoma tennessee) (i could say why but i best not)
would my crinimal record effect me coming into the country? probabley
is it easy to get a job? yes
how much is rent for a apartment? (nothing special, just liveable) i don't know
what shouldnt i do in america that may offend you americans? just mock americans/America and you'll be fine
what are the bars like? i couldn't tell you
will i make friends? depends on how outgoing you are
are there many brits over there? if you watch TV. here it seem like there are more Brits then americans.

You don't have to say it I will. He means there's more religious people there.
Edit- don't feel like you can't speak your mind on RU. Just be prepared to explain yourself to the crowd. Saying things like "I could say why but I best not" is just asking for it.

actually no >:( i guess i have to say it to make dudebro happy
people in the east tend to be more bitter and all about themselves (before you question me I've lived in both areas and know what I'm talking about)
i met a few nice people in pennsylvania (Arnold Palmer being one of them) so there is hope and I'm not saying in any way that if you live there your automatically that way
Dudebro
04-25-2009, 01:47 AM
Yup you're totally wrong. That is a stereotype and it's not true. There are plenty of miserable, selfish people everywhere. The people in the south/midwest just pretend they don't see it. Thanks for implying that most of the people I know and care about are selfish and bitter though.
I wasn't gonna say it before but why not now? Sez most people don't like the southern US because it's known to be crazy religious and/or racist. Stereotypes are hurtful right Gamefreak?
Btw I wasn't kidding when I said you can speak your mind. You don't have to please me in anyway. Just don't post things that might cause controversy and then basically say "sorry but I'm not gonna talk about it" It sounds like "I'm right your wrong".
gamefreak100200

TrakMastaTom
04-25-2009, 02:02 AM
so how long have you lived in the south?
I don't even live in the South really, and I see confederate flags on cars daily. Uggghhh.
Sez, I recommend the West Coast. The West Coast is chill. If I could move anywhere in the US I would probably move to Seattle or somewhere in Oregon or something.
Dudebro
04-25-2009, 02:03 AM
Because it is a stereotype. Did you meet and get to know everyone or even half of the people who live in the east? Yeah I didn't think so. Lumping everyone into a group with just your experiences is wrong and inaccurate.
I never lived in the south fyi, don't ever want too. Too many bigots and religious fanatics for my tastes.
Winnebagel
04-25-2009, 02:31 AM
@ DB, don't put all people in the South in the same category either. I'm in Florida and not everyone here is a shot gun toting, rebel flag flying, bigot or big game hunter. Okay, to be honest I'm not from Florida originally and have lived pretty much everywhere, but still I know a lot of native Floridians who are not so backwards as some may think. ;)
@ Sez, I have lived in many different states in the U.S. and there are many cool places to see and experience here. I love your country too, but the U.S. is a great place as well.
Some of my personal favorite cities in the U.S. include:
- San Diego & Los Angelas, California
- Austin, Texas (it does not at all fall under the typical Texas sterotype and is actually very progressive).
- New York, New York (that's an easy one though)
- Seattle, Washington
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Tampa/Orlando, Florida
As far as cost goes, it really depends on where you go, but you can find a decent place to live for not too expensive. Jobs are decent too. With the economic situation happening currently, jobs are a bit tougher to find, but overall the U.S. is still much better off economically than many places.
Also, another thing to consider, there are also some cool places in Canada to consider. Vancouver especially has a lot going on.
As far as other Brits, well the U.S. is such a melting pot of different cultures (at least in many areas), so you will find people from everywhere. I myself have a few friends and know a few people from the U.K., so yep you will possibly run into some of your peeps if you decide to come to the U.S.

Having done some traveling between Western Europe and the States, I would think your biggest concern would be your criminal record. If your record isn't serious and you're planning on getting a tourist visa it may not be a big deal. However, if your record is more serious and/or you're going to try and get a work visa you may have a lot of paperwork to fill out and spend a lot of time waiting.
Other than that, it comes down to your preferences. Typically the bigger the city, the more there is to do, the more money it costs to do it, and the longer it takes to get there.

Just remember you have the right to believe/say whatever you want. Other people have the right to question it though.
are they crazy religious/racist though?
from what ive heard, i dont think id move to the south US

Sez when I said that I was mad and trying to prove a point. Not everyone in the south is like that. The majority of people I've met from those states are very nice and pretty normal. That being said there is still a lot of racism down there. Also there is a lot of religious turmoil down there too.
In the north east we do have a lot of bitter, uptight know it alls but it's not everyone. People are people wherever you go.
I'm born and raised in Massachusetts.
The thing MJ said about low rent is due to the area. No offense but not many people wanna move to the midwest. You're gonna pay more to live in an area that's highly populated(like New York, notice Tenser left out the going rent? I didn't). Ohio isn't bad but you might find it boring.
Also you asked how much you'd need to get started. From my experiences you'll need first and last months rent and most likely a security deposit. So if the rent is around 450 you'll need somewhere over 1k to get started. If it's New York it might be more like 2-3k.
@Kong- Hawaii is awesome but there isn't a lot of jobs there from what I hear. That and it must be expensive.

Michigan (metro Detroit) has really great people, a thriving night life, reasonable prices for housing (400-600 for a decent studio or 1 bedroom apartment... maybe a lil more certain areas), fun stuff to do winter or summer.
BUT.... Jobs are far and few between right now. Last I checked, Michigan's unemployment rate was almost 13% which was the highest of the states. Probably more crime then the norm (especially Detroit city) but as long as you don't poke your nose where you shouldn't things should be fine.
I'm sure there are some crummy places to live near the intersection of Vernor and Springwells.... lots of juggalo's too. ;)

Wow, I'm waaay late into this. I live way far in the South and I know what Gamefreak is talking about. If a stereotype means everybody, then coming from someone who lives there, 8/10 sounds fair. I regret ever being born here, not that I had a choice. Living in this awful, dirty part of the world where hyprocrites and zealots spit on you and shake your hand at the same time has scarred me for life. It's also made me much wiser and knowledgeable of the world than I should be at my age. But like Dudebro said, there are screwed up people everywhere. The south just has a freaking ton of them. wheres the best place to move?
would my crinimal record effect me coming into the country?
is it easy to get a job?
how much is rent for a apartment? (nothing special, just liveable)
what shouldnt i do in america that may offend you americans?
what are the bars like?
will i make friends?
are there many brits over there?
sorry, didn't read the replies, but i'll answer what i know.
1. varies. do you like urban enviroments or wide open spaces. this country is a big place. there are 50 states, each with unique, but mostly similar laws. taxes vary from state to state and they vary based on different things. sales tax, tobacco, gas taxes, property tax and so on, for example, connecticut has high gas and sales tax, while new hampshire has no sales tax, but property and inheritance taxes are huge. different cultures in different parts of the country as well, the coasts (east and west) tend to be more liberal in politics and value systems, while the the mid-west and south are more conservative.
2. likely, a criminal record could very well stop you from getting a visa, but that might be dependent if you were convicted of a felony or a misdemenor.
3. getting a job here is just like getting a job over there, based on experience, education, and a lot of the time, on who you know. be aware, unemployment is at a 20 year high right now. finding the high paying job right now is not likely. but hey, mcdonalds and walmart will hire anybody.
4. rent, varies by location, cost of living is cheaper in rural areas away from the coasts. i live in kentucky right now, i have a rent controlled 2 bedroom house for 400 a month, but now most rent for 500-575. in new england where i come from, that same house would rent for 1200-1400.
5. offend americans...well...you can't please everyone, so at least one thing you do will offend someone. it is just our nature, but a few words of advice, do not walk into a crowded bar in ohio and scream "go michigan!!!" they don't like that. also, avoid waving a gun in public and walking down park avenue naked...those are sure to offend some people.
6. american bar serve alcohol. like everywhere else, some bars cater to different patrions. some are more expensive that others, some are a bit posher, some are dives. the most common trend in bars this days is to have cities ban smoking in the bars themselves.
7. make friends? yes, just be yourself, just like anywhere else, and actually, being brit will help, people are going to have a natural curiousity about you.
8. i'm sure there are a ton of brits, just like there are a ton of italians, asians, hispanics and so on.
edit: read quickly through replies came across this quesiton
i mean for a deposit of a apartment or somthing cheaper,
food,
just basic living generally
http://retrouprising.com/images/buttons/quote.gif (http://retrouprising.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=60788)
i would recommend at least 2-3 months worth of saving in living expenses in case you have difficutly finding a job, likely you will have to pay deposits on utilities if they are not including in your apartment. these cost vary by where you want to move to.
there is a lot of intellectual speak, but this website should give the rough idea of cost of living, employement rates and so on through different regions of the country.

would my crinimal record effect me coming into the country? Probably not.
is it easy to get a job? Depends on where you go and what kind of job you want. If you want a normal regular job then not being a citizen will probably make it more difficult. You will probably have to find a job that pays under the table. Probably easier in a big town.
how much is rent for a apartment? Depends on the town and luck. Check Craigslist.org. Look for rooms/shared
what shouldnt i do in america that may offend you americans? Fart. If you do just say you are from England and we will understand.
