GOLDEN AXE
Golden axe is a game that came out in the late 80’s; it’s got a game style very similar to streets of rage. You can choose from 3 characters – a big strong looking male, a fit looking female or a little dwarf (?) when I used to play this game with my cousin John when we were younger he obviously was the big strong male and I was the fit woman, very rarely did we use the dwarf (except for when johns little brother played, we told him he had to be the dwarf because he was the youngest).
Another thing I enjoyed about this game was that you could play two players in co-op style, which was great because fighting each other in a game like “mortal combat” got a bit boring after a while. Playing in co-op mode meant John didn’t have to wait for me to be killed to have his turn, he could actually play with me!
Another choice in golden axe is duel mode. It’s ok but nothing special. After getting to about round 10 I found myself getting bored causing me to purposely let my enemy kill me because I was bored.
One of the main things that irritated me was the “aggghhh” noise you get when either you or a enemy gets killed. I suppose that was good sound effects for back in the day, but it annoys me like crazy. I later found out that these painful screams are actually digitized screams from films such as “First blood” and “ Conan the barbarian” (look it up its true).
Another annoying part of the game is when you have to kick the thief, you know, the little guy who looks like Arthur dressed as a burglar. It can be hard to catch him sometimes and when you do kick him you get the magic potion.
The magic potion has its good and bad point, the more bottles you get – the more powerful the magic, but you can only use it once. For example you could have 4 magic bottles, and you only get one use out of it! Even though it’s powerful, I would of preferred 4 uses.
Overall this is a great game, I had a lot of enjoyment out of it as a kid, and now I have bought it off eBay for my mega drive, I will be having more fun in the future, I only wish it would be a little faster paced.
I give it 7 out of 10.
