Now that we have the SNES running I need to ask the question,
What are some really good RPGs?
I am looking for things along the lines of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy.
I am not that into Secret of Mana tho.
So aside from the 3 there.

Should I give that one a second chance?

Secret of Mana is the greatest game ever created.

Count100, I don't even know you anymore.
Secret of Mana is the greatest game ever created.
You already know my feeling on this game. I am playing it both on the VC and here at RU at the moment.
Count do you have all 3 characters and some magic. If not, keep going until you get those, then see how you feel.

I have to agree. I tried Secret of Mana as well and didn't care for it.
I love most of the games created by Square. Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, etc. Chrono Cross is awesome!!! But you've obviously already discovered all those.
I loved the Dragon Warrior series on the old NES system. I had all 4 games and loved each one. For SNES, give Mario's Legend of the Seven Stars a try. Yes, the game is definitely aimed at a younger crowd but the gameplay is still great and I enjoyed playing this one even as an adult.
For slightly newer games, I enjoyed Kingdom Hearts. I loved Final Fantasy and square games (I mentioned that didn't I) and who didn't love all those wonderful Disney movies as a kid. Kingdom Hearts is Final Fantasy meets Disney. Literally.
Nowadays I spent most of my game time playing online games. Guild Wars has captured my attention. If you are at all interested in online MMO's then give it a try. No monthly fee so it's a cheaper alternative to games like WoW. (Cheaper, not crappier)

put me down for another that finds secret of mana over rated

secret of mana is with out a doubt a great game
its story is deep and its game play does not get boring
once you get some magic and some decent weapons and get to the boss of the first world the game gets alot better up untill you get to the deep egypt tombs (I always found that dungeon boring ememys are two hard to hit with phisical attacks)
sabby
03-25-2009, 01:01 PM
Deep egypt tombs??? I think you are thinking of Secret of Evermore. Another great game.
oasis
03-25-2009, 01:10 PM
... no maybe its not egypt tombs but you are in a cave like building with rivers next to you and there are quick bats flying around and it makes it impossible to hit them and you are in the desert
I will have to play again in fast forward mode and see...
I would say its the 3erd or 4th boss

@count to get back on topic I would suggest super metroid
not really a RPG persay but a great snes game

03-25-2009, 04:38 PM
Anywats to suggest an actual great SNES RPG, why not try Breath of Fire II?
oasis
03-25-2009, 04:44 PM
@sabby I just re read what you said and yes you are correct it is secret of evermore...
that one is my favorite not secret of mana which I have not beat yet

A good SNES RPG that isn't chrono or FF?
Definately Earthbound.
Phantasy Star 2 for the Genesis is good too.
Dudebro
03-26-2009, 02:21 AM
The 7TH Saga
Awesome game but not for casual rpgs players(unless they want a challenge).
Yoshis Island is RPG?
And yes count, Secret of Mana is a good game. It might not seem good at the beginning though. Get into more and I bet you'll like it.
Also welcome back to RU Maquis. We seem to have a lot of people coming out of the woodwork since the update.

Thx Dude, but actually I never left. I just rarely ever post. I play in the arcade during lunch breaks but never come to the forums. Icculus and I trade the Hangaroo champion title a lot and I spend a lot of time playing Tontie.
Tontie is an addictive little flash game using the numpad on your keyboard. Give it a try. I need the competition. (Don't let the high score scare you away. It was a fluke and actually with the way that game scores it really didn't take a lot more gameplay to reach it.)
Dudebro
03-27-2009, 12:01 AM
Good to see you posting. What made you do it, the update?
I'll favorite that game until I get some time to try it with no interruptions. It sounds like a game I need to focus on.
Btw another good Snes RPG is Might and Magic III Isles of Terra. I'm replaying it now and I remember how much I loved it. It's a first person dungeon crawler so it's not for everyone but it's awesome if you like that sort of thing.
I played Might and Magic 3 - Isles of Terra (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/2453/) for Genesis when I was a kid and loved it. Such a big and complex game.
Dudebro

Yeah really. I spent about an hour just making my characters. I loved every minute of it.

I'm seriously the only one who's nominating Breath of Fire II? Wow...
Dudebro
03-27-2009, 02:12 AM
I didn't think I had to mention it since you covered it earlier. Breath of Fire is awesome, there really is no debate anyways.;)
I noticed you didn't nominate 7Th Saga Tenser, you saying it sucks?
Kugyince
03-27-2009, 02:19 AM
No, but 7th Saga isn't for the casual RPGer. Giving that he only mentioned a few very mainstream RPGs I was under the assumption that Count is more of a casual RPGer.
Dudebro
03-27-2009, 02:27 AM
How about Might and Magic? It might be a little complex at first but it's a great game.

03-27-2009, 02:37 AM
I actually like RPG's Tenser that's why I am looking for some that are not of the normal ones like the Final Fantasys and such.
I am looking to branch out a bit and see what it out there. The ones that I used were just a few examples that came to mind at the time.
Dudebro
03-27-2009, 02:53 AM
Try 7th saga for sure then. It's a hard and unforgiving game but it's awesome once you learn it.
I really like Might and Magic isles of Terra, it has a lot of story and tons of exploration. You can literally go anywhere on the map. Even into the elemental planes. Awesome.

i played breath of fire only once, liked it, but never had a chance to play it again and it was one of those titles that was lost in the shuffle.
illusion of gaia was a decent rpg, albit kind of an action/rpg.
Dudebro
03-28-2009, 05:35 AM
I played one Breath of Fire game for countless hours. I think it was part 3. Either way it was a great game all the way through and I'd gladly play it again.

rather than list of the good snes games wed probly be better off listing the ones to avoid, since 90 percent of them are good. avoid drakkhen.
Dudebro
03-28-2009, 10:21 PM
Drakken wasn't that bad. It's a good game if you want something easy that tells a story. Other than that the graphics are terrible and it feels kinda clunky.
Eye of the Beholder was painfully boring.
Kugyince
03-28-2009, 10:30 PM
After giving it some thought, there really isn't very many bad RPGs and Adventures on the SNES. Yes, half of them are mediocre, but they're still not bad.
Eye of the Beholder
Tecmo Secret of the Stars
Brandish
Drakkhen
Lord of the Rings
Lagoon
Ultima: Runes of Virtue
That might be about it. I might be missing one or two but for the most part every other one is worthy of at least 3 stars.
Dudebro
03-29-2009, 03:53 AM
I was thinking of defending a couple of those games but they're not worth it. They were playable but not something I'd recommend.

is it like Fire Emblem?
Dudebro
04-01-2009, 03:34 AM
I never played Fire Emblem but from what I know of it I'd have to say no.
7th saga is pretty standard rpg stuff. I like it a lot but I know some people don't. It's one of those games that has the dreaded "nintendo difficulty".
For example, you enter the next zone and the monsters destroy you. Not just beat you up but totally dominate you.
Inindo is harder to explain. It has the typical RPG stuff but it also has wierd little things like doing spy missions and having tea with ninjas. FTW I know right?;D
count100
04-01-2009, 03:40 AM
Well now having tea with ninjas that one almost sounds really exciting. :p

Fire Emblem is a Stategy RPG like Shining Force.
Knowing your odd duck games it will be confusing and not grippable. :P
Dudebro
04-01-2009, 03:50 AM
Yeah I bet I'd love Fire Emblem since that's my favorite kind of RPG. I really like games that require planning and skill. If an RPG hands me everything then I lose interest fast, unless it has a great story.
If you try anything I suggest I'd hope it's Inindo. It's not the best game ever made but it sure is cool. It's also the main reason I ever downloaded an emulator and eventually found RU, so in a way it's responsible for me being here.:D
Tails

Lot's of people are wrong about a lot of things.
RPG is a pretty loose term in gaming bro. Some people argue that it only requires that you "play a role" like with the narrative in a Zelda game. So you could also lump in games like The Walking Dead which feature no real combat or choices about how your character develops(physically not emotionally). I'm not saying I agree really I'm just saying the term is not set in stone. Call Zelda an action RPG if it makes you feel better.
Sure you can. Not everyone will agree but lots of people do consider it an rpg.
I've heard people say that, and eventhough they are wrong, (it's an action adventure game), they can call it whatever they want.
Some good SNES RPG's that haven't been mentioned are
Shadowrun
Terranigma
I saw a few people here mention Illusion of Gaia (Illusion of Time in EU), which is a sequel to Soul Blazer. Well, Terranigma is the 3rd, and imo, the best in the series. It only got released in JP and PAL, so there might be a new adventure out there for you yanks :q

This is one of the reasons I love RetroUprising, there are so many games here it seems like you can find almost any game that can be named!
