U.S. NES Open Tournament

Well, everybody, it's time to get this golf season started. Our first course will be the U.S Course of the NES Open Tournament game. This is a nice beginner course that will give you a pretty good feel for the golf games we will be playing.

Yardage - 7,102 Par - 72

THE TOP VIEW PLAY:
A - To select choice
B - To see lay of the ball, to go back one choice,
Up/Down - To select swing speed, club selection, shot spin (normal, top spin, back spin)
Right/Left - To move direction cross.

THE SHOT PLAY:
A - Starts back swing, selects power, selects accuracy/hook/slice.(Will explain later)
B - Goes back to top view
Right/Left - To move direction cross.

PUTTING PLAY:
A - Starts back swing, selects power.(Will explain later)
B - Nothing
Up/Down - To select swing speed
Right/Left - To move direction cross.

Shot Explanation:
The shot for this game is the three tap approach. Once to start, once at the end of the meter, then a final tap close to the impact zone. If you hit too early on the way toward the impact zone you will have the ball curve to the right (slice), if you hit it too late, the ball will curve to the left (hook). The straighter you want the ball to go, the closer to the impact zone you want to get.

Putting Explanation:
Putting on this game is the two tap approach. Once to start, once to set the power. On the green, the arrows show the slope of the green, the larger the arrow, the steeper the slope. You have to account for the slope for speed and curve toward or away from the hole.

Proof of Scoring:
When your finished, save a screen shot (A on the keyboard), then send a copy to Hobbes and myself(sabby).

Score Submission:
Submit scores (by 8pm U.S eastern time (I think that is what most of us are on) of each day (4 scores total) on Friday for the next four weeks. You have to make your screen shot public so in the explanation put your name and round number in the explanation.

I will post a leader board after every round and will post it AFTER I receive all the scores.

Any other corrections/suggestions/questions, please let me know.

Click "More" from the top menu and then select "My Screen Shots." Find the image you just saved and add a description and click share. If you do not add a description and click share then no one else will have permission to see the image.

I was thinking, since we can do movies with NES, if you record your round with keystrokes, I could maybe make a highlight reel of the tournament, if you guys want. What do you think?

Well for the screen shot a press A, then it says do you want to save this screen, then i say yes. Then i go to more and then my screenshots, and when i check , the screenshot is not there. It says that it has saved your screen shotbut no screenshot on the page though :confused:

this never happens when i play a orginal, but it does when i load a save state one.

I live in The UK so i have to get my scores in by 1 and night. It's pretty obivious i go to school so i would be asleep.

U.S gets from 00:00 to 20:00. You get 20 hours but for 4-11 hours, you would be asleep and must of you are adults so you would get like 10 hours to submit a score.

For me in the UK, It would start at 05:00 and end at 01:00. I am asleep at 5 and i wake up at 7 to go to school. I get home at 4 and i do my homework. At 5-6 i eat dinner. 18:00 - 22:00 i get to play my computer.

I only get 4 hours and you get 10 hours. :mad:

Four hours is plenty of time. I'm a terrible golfer in real life and I can play a round and have lunch in that amount of time. Video game golf is fairly quick, and you don't have to spend the time to find your ball(which when you're as bad as I am, that is where most of your time is spent).

Instead of asking for a submission a day on four separate days why not just ask that they have four rounds submitted by such and such day and time? This will make it easier on everyone who can't log on everyday (jeckel & TMT) and let some of us get them all done and submitted in one day.

Shot a 94 in my first practice round. That about what I average in real life, which is pretty awful.

I think I can shoot in the low 80's with some practice.

I think one round per week might be OK. It sounds like a long time, but it would give people time to submit. That way you could build your leaderboard and see how the rounds are progressing from week to week.

I could also manage to finish an entire 4 round tourney in one week, so I'm open to either option.

Well, here are the results of the first round. The scores have the handicap figured in

so, because everyone was over par, everyone is tied for the lead.:)

Hobbes and I never received scores from bird or BRODY, but I haven't heard from either of them in a while. Jeckel, you sent a score but your link just went to my scores. If you get it to us I'll add it in. Take a look at the Stat Leader board and tell me if you like the info on it.

On to Round 2, hope everyone is having a good time with this.

That's what happens with a handicap. It will eventually get smoothed out as you play more rounds.

Before I forget, there has been a rule addition/change for the remainder of the tournament.

SUBMISSION OF SCORES:

All scores will be submitted by screen shot to the scoring committee. To create a screen shot, press the control and print screen button of the scorecard at the end of the round. Open up Paint (or similar program) and paste it there. The file should have the player's name and round number on it. Attach the file to a PM and send it to the scoring committee. Some of the games the scorecard will extend to two screen lengths. It is the responsibility of the player to make sure that the uppermost view and lowermost view are present. Examples of approved screen shots will be shown in each tournament thread. Due to continuing late scores being submitted, the following rule shall be strictly enforced. If your score is not submitted by the deadline time, you will be penalized one (1) stroke for it being late and an additional one (1) penalty stroke for every eight (8) hours it is late beyond that. If you have accumulated up to ten (10) penalty strokes you will be disqualified from the tournament (not season).

HANDICAP:

Handicap will be the players average score less par (72). Handicap will be adjusted after each round. If a player's average score is under par (less than 72) their handicap will be 0. Penalty strokes will not effect your handicap. You have to get the full point. Even if you're at 8.9, still an 8 for handicap.

I have an idea/suggestion, too. I liked your idea about recording a keystroke video of a golf round.

How about everyone records the Fourth (Final) Round of play next week? That way, if we have some tight battles, we might be able to dig through the highlights/lowlights and see where the tourney was decided.

Might be a little labor intensive, but I'll volunteer my efforts. :top:

I tried the keystroke with a Pass the Puck contest but it wasn't working right then. I don't think Kong has gotten around to fixing it yet.

I think a round of golf would take way too long for an animated .gif movie. It would be nearly useless if stretched that far.

It saves and plays. But when you go to play it back the keystroke timing is off somehow and it messes up the replay. Remember wan's Astyanax submissions? We thought it was the Game Genie but it wasn't because it did the same thing for me. Check the puck thread out.

Looks like with the exception of the first par 5 (Hole 2) the par 5's were a killer. Decent putting all around.

I will have the next tournament set up sometime this week. Take the week to practice the next course: NES Golf (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/nes/Golf.php) Trust me, everyone will need it.

It will balance itself out as we go along. The more scores posted the less of a swing in the scores. If we do this again next year, I will more than likely keep the averages and roll them into the next season.

At first I was slicing a lot so I started planing on slicing and if I hit it straight then that would be bad because I was planning on slicing so I started trying to slice to make up for my intentional bad aiming. I decided that was a big mistake and so I practiced until I could hit it straight most of the time.

I am going to sit the next one out. Golf, real life and in video games, just isn't my idea of fun.

You guys are the expert so if you say I win then I will take it but it doesn't seem fair because I only did it with the handicap. This was more a contest of who could improve the most and not who is the best.

This whole golf thing is totally lost on me. Although, I do find all the Tiger Woods references very entertaining. Not because I am a fan of his, but because I see him almost every day that he's not on a tour. :mrgreen:

I work in a stripmall that is the closest non-housing construct to his home. There is a health food store next door to me that he frequents at least once a day (usually more often if he doesn't send his assistants in his place). He's a really nice, soft-spoken guy. Perhaps I only know that because I'm not a fan of his, per se. If I was, I might not have the nerve to talk to him. The only remotely golf-related thing I ever talked to him about was the new Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 video game. I asked him how it was making those games and what he thinks about the character model looking so much like him now. He said the game is a lot of hard work and that seeing his character kinda freaks him out. :lol:

Hehehe! That's great. I hate meeting celebrities that I'm a huge fan of. When I met Bruce Campbell, I purposefully planned out what I was going to say so that I could actually have a conversation with him. It's kinda lame, but the first time I saw him in person, I totally got butterflies in my stomach. He was (and still is) the most famous person I've ever met. Sure, he's not really all that famous, but with the fact that I'm a huge fan that's seen just about everything he's ever been in, he was pretty famous in my world.

As for where I work, surprisingly, there are a good amount of celebrity-types that visit this stripmall. We are right on the outskirts of the ritziest part of the city, so anyone who is wealthy and lives in this town, lives in this area.

Mostly, it's a lot of athletes; golfers, basketball players, football players, and a couple baseball players. Since I'm not into sports, I couldn't tell you how popular these people are, but there are quite a few of them. There are very few actors and musicians around these parts, but the ones that are here visit this stripmall pretty regularly. One celebrity even said that they consider this row of stores to be this town's equivalent of Sunset Blvd. in California.

It's definitely neat, but I (and everyone else here for that matter) purposefully play it low-key. That is more than likely why they visit as much as they do. I mean, all they want is to be treated like regular people because, at the end of the day, that's what they are.

Yeah living in the Northeast I'm surrounded by sports teams and I've met or spotted quite a few professional athletes.

I've met McNabb during his SU days. I attended a "meet and greet" with O.J. Simpson (pre-murder). I've also shaken hands with Carmelo Anthony during his SU days. I've spotted quite a few but those don't really count...

As for musicians, I've talked briefly with the drummer for Counting Crows, got to sit and chat with the singer from Coheed & Cambria for almost an hour at a concert where Dredg was opening for them.

My two favorites were from work though. My work is a sponsor for our local public radio station WAMC. I attended a sponsor thank you diner and got to hug, yes hug, Natalie Merchant, another sponsor. Also Rachael Ray lives maybe 20 mins from me and her mom owns a restaurant that we deliver to. I got to meet Rachael once. She's a hottie...=}
