It's not online but Buck Rodgers Countdown to Doomsday is probably the best Genesis RPG.

Shining Force (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Shining-Force.php) is awesome. Shining Force 2 is even better but not online. The Game Gear Shining Force 2 (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Game-Gear/Shining-Force-2-Sword-of-Haija.php) is online though.

Sword of Vermilion (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Sword-of-Vermilion.php) was one of the first RPGs I ever played. I loved it then but I don't know if it would stand up to the test of time or not.

Beyond Oasis (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Beyond-Oasis.php) is a half way decent attempt by Sega to make a Secret of Mana clone. Not nearly as good as the real thing but it is online.

Golden Axe Warrior (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Master-System/Golden-Axe-Warrior.php) is a decent attempt by Sega to clone the first Zelda.

Phantasy Star (http://www.retrouprising.com/index.php?action=arcade&name=phantasy) is of course Sega's flagship RPG series and rightfully so.

I always get Starflight (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Starflight.php) and Star Control (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Star-Control.php) confused but both were great space exploration games. At least one of them had several RPG elements thrown in but my memory is fuzzy and combining them both into one single game.

Fire Emblem Gaiden (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/NES/Fire-Emblem-Gaiden.php) is an 8bit game similar to Shining Force and Advance Wars.

Sweet Home (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/NES/Sweet-Home.php) sounds... ergm... sweet.

The Ys series (http://www.retrouprising.com/index.php?action=arcade;name=ys;start=y#lettery) I have played some of them and they were decent.

Dune (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Dune-The-Battle-for-Arrakis.php) heard it was good.

Spellcaster (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Master-System/Spellcaster.php) has good reviews.

Shining in the Darkness (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/Sega-Genesis/Shining-in-the-Darkness.php) is the prequel to Shining Force. I think it is more of a dungeon crawler.

Kong has some good ones on there.
Play Shadowrun. It's a great game.
Starflight is the cool one. Star control is the port for a much better game on other systems. It's just one part of the main game, the ship combat. I played the good one on 3DO years ago and it rules. So yeah play starflight not starcontrol.

Tails mentioned EarthBound, if you haven't tried it you should.

Also Destiny of an Emperor. Not sure if people consider it an rpg but it's the same basic style. But it's unique at the same time.

Dungeons and Dragons Warriors of the Eternal Sun is one I liked years ago. Worth a try.

Although it might not be really RPG Shadowgate is a cool game. Deja Vu too. Try them both with no walthrough, I bet you have alot of trouble.(A challenge!)

Nah I requested Buck Rogers and Starflight. I love both of them. Both really cool games I spent alot of time on.

@Oasis I see Tenser mentioned the Ultima games 3-5. I just wanna second that. Ultima 3 Exodus has really dated graphics and is very old feeling all around but still a good game.
I really liked Ultima 4 Quest of the Avatar. It was a favorite of all my friends growing up too.
I didn't play Ultima 5 very much but it seemed pretty good.

Informally they're called Point n' Click. The genre we're using for them formally is Strategy/Adventure. There's a total of six of them on the NES, all quite fun:

Well, Final Fantasy & Dragon Warrior are very obvious RPGs. I've read through the entire thread and here's my highest recommends from this site:

Shining Force- My favorite out of all these.
Crystalis- With Save States, this game should become more fun. I'll try it in a while.
Willow- Same reason as Crystalis
Destiny of the Empire- I seem videos of it on YouTube before playing it here. Total excellent.

I have yet to try Phantasy Star & Golden Axe Warrior so I can't say. I hope to try them real soon. And I love the Super Mario version of Final Fantasy (I forgot the name, but I'm a big fan of it).

I've played Willow. My gf loves it, she's played it alot more than me. I have the game in my collection still.
I admit it's not that bad of a game I was just being negative. I think my problem with this game is I played it only recently and it didn't do much for me. I've played tons of games like this and I was bored pretty quick.

How do you get past the river once you've gotten to the tavern part? Hopefully that makes sense. I tried to figure it out for my gf, got frustrated and checked Gamefaqs where I got more frustrated trying to sift through the walkthrough. If you don't wanna ruin the fun for me( ::)) I'll understand.

Before she crosses the lake I would highly recommend that she be at level 13 at the least and she have the dragon sword and armor.

She has the wakka seeds and dragon gear as far as I know. The problem is she goes to cross the water and drowns. It's been awhile since we've played it but I'm loading it up now to check the gear and seeds, make sure I'm not being a moron.

I recommend (at least for curiosity's sake at least) Super Mario Remix 2. It's a Mario game set somewhat in the Dragon Warrior world. The decripion said King Koopa is the ultimate evil, but like Mario Fantasy Adventure (FF1), I don't think he is. At least check it out when you find the time.

That's because most people here have either already played Earthbound or have no plans to ever play Earthbound. Not really worth discussing beyond that. It's like how Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior got one mention.

And Chrono Trigger didn't get mentioned at all, it's because everyone has played it or never plans on it.

Always though Chrono Trigger was I little bit over rated but in saying that I have only just started playing retro RPGs again. Some good ones on here I will have to try once I have finished Final Fantasy III.

I suggest an RPG 7. It's light weight, man portable, self contained, has a fast reload time and relatively inexpensive.

As for games, zelda and secret of mana. But I am sure you have already logged several hours in those.
