From what I've heard, it's just a mish mash from the previous movies but with modern effects. Seriously though, the plot seems like complete fan fiction instead of a plot written for an actual movie.

Not sure what to say about it.
Star Wars became increasingly meh to me from Episode 1 onward, and despite the new FX being spectacular ...

The Star Wars Holiday Special (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl6wkHQpzco) was really cool though.

In my defense I'm not commenting on the movie at all and I'm hyped to see it. I'm just annoyed with the campaign to spoil the movie. I'm sure it's an organized thing from a chan or reddit or something though.
every fan I know says its one of if not the best Star Wars movie. I'm seeing nearly universal praise too. The only people that seem to bash it are die hards who cannot let go of their nostalgia and people who hate JJ Abrams for his lens flare filming and/or "ruining" Star Trek.

I'd call myself a die hard fan. I was 6 when A New Hope came out, and I grew up a Star Wars kid. Like most, I'm not a fan of the newer trilogy, though I can stomach watching them here and there. This movie definitely borrows from A New Hope - that's probably my only complaint - a little too much. Visually, I loved it. I thought the scripting was well done - not much of the cringe-worthy dialogue Lucas sometimes wrote. Casting was well-done, too. The pace of the movie I thought was really good as well. Part of it is probably that I saw the first showing Thursday night, and the whole theater was really into it - lots of yelling, cheering, etc. Not a perfect movie, but making a perfect Star Wars sequel/prequel is impossible anyway. I thought it was definitely better than Ep 1-3, and for my money, probably better than Jedi.

I thought about this too, going in. I think the performances by the original actors (which were surprisingly good, considering Harrison Ford has been asleep for his recent roles and Carrie Fisher is usually not great anyways) helped solidify it as real Star Wars though.

It's better than the originals. Darth Vader can barely lift his arms above his waist and Obi Wan just gives up and dies when he sees Luke, because he wants to put him in even greater danger from Vader apparently. The prequel stuff was over the top and far from perfect but at least they were exciting and creative.

I'm not condoning getting violent over spoilers but this is not normal spoiler trolls. What I've seen is more like a coordinated troll army. Every big news story I clicked on had spoilers peppered throughout the comment sections. FB has a system where it shows the comment and then you have to expand to see replies. Most of them would have one or two posts that are just unavoidable image captures. So you'd click to see the huge and highly rated conversation and BAM spoiler in your face. I checked a few of the accounts and they all looked new and very normal. They differ from usual FB troll accounts that try to lure you in with sex or a weird name/profile pic.
It was funny to see the rage replies though. Some people do get really upset over spoilers, especially character deaths. The way I see it I'm gonna find out either way so why wait?

Liking the prequels and that fight specifically isn't a popular opinion. I liked the prequels somewhat but there's a lot to hate about them. That final fight wasn't all bad but Anakins lines were really cringey and the way he got cut down was lame. It's no lamer than Darth Mauls death but Anakin is supposed to be this uber fighter and he pulls that shit on someone he's fought alongside for years? People say he was enraged and not thinking but come on he beat Dooku, who is a saber master trained by Yoda, when he was all mad. It just didn't work for me at all. Vader deserved better.
Now that I think about it maybe that's why Obi Wan just gives up when he fights Vader later. He even smirked at him right before he did it.

Didn't seem fan-fictiony. Seemed like new ideas were used, yes, but utilized correctly. This is probably one of my favourites in the series. That said it did feel like a lot of fan service at times, but I can easily get over that. I wouldn't necessarily even shed a bad light on that fact.

Okay, I wasn't sure if DN and CP were making fun of me or not. I chose wrong.
I'm just poking fun at the writing. I'm in the minority in that I think Star Wars is overrated and that 5 of the 6 movies are average movies. Episode 5 is the exception, I think that's easily the best of the 6 and a great movie.
The writing/acting is so inconsistent, especially in the third. Hayden Christensen did an awful job as Anakin imo, his worst line being the "I hate you! :at-wits-end:" he gives Obi Wan at the end of Ep 3. Obi Wan's "It's over Anakin. I have the high ground!", etc. A lot of the fights are really uncoordinated and look so wacky (Obi Wan vs Darth Vader, the Darth Maul fight, Grievous fight).
Although I didn't like most of the cast for 1-3, Ewan McGregor (did a good job despite the bad writing), Liam Neeson, and Samuel L. Jackson were positives imo. I also really liked Darth Maul's character and was disappointed he died.
That being said, I shit bricks when I saw General Grievous on the screen for the first time because he looked so badass. But they he fought Obi Wan and was a pushover and I got sad again. Still though, he looked cool as fuck.
I haven't seen The Force Awakens (and already got the main things spoiled :( ) but I do plan on seeing it eventually. I too heard it was a lot like Episode 4.

When I went to rewatch the fight, the first line of dialog struck me as terrible acting, and yes the writing is terrible. I liked how it ended up with Obi abandoning him with only 1 arm remaining and having such remorse at how it turned out. Then boom, the Vader reveal. Not as impactful today as it was years ago on the big screen, but nothing ever is.

I should add, these 2 sequences are one of the few things that stuck with me from the series. I think I've seen them all aside from the new one, and I couldn't give even a basic synopsis of any of them. I think it's my mild a.d.d., it's rare that I'll remember much of a movie even after a couple of days. Even though the scene was pretty bad, I did really like Obi Wan's lines inbetween that awful "I hate you!" line.

You have to keep it in context. Obi Wan is one of the most skilled Jedi around and he makes a living hunting down sith or their allies. Grievous is something like 95% droid and has no force power. Has a droid ever been shown to match any jedi? Also I think I read that Grievous took those other lightsabers from weak jedi he ambushed or caught off guard and a couple were gifted from Dooku. He's not the jedi killer he claims to be.
All that being said I actually liked the Grievous fight. My only complaint is why did they keep his stupid heart when they made him a droid? A machine heart would work a lot better and be a lot less of a liability.
Dunno if there's any truth to that
It's a very safe bet. Lucas is not a good writer and he's made some pretty stupid decisions, like the Ewoks and Jar Jar.

I just expected him to put up more of a fight. Even without the force, having killed at least 3 other Jedi is impressive. I read somewhere that Grievous killed several Jedi Knights but I don't know for sure since I don't really follow Star Wars all that much. Obviously Obi Wan is stronger/more skilled than Grievous, but I would have thought based on what I heard of Grievous beforehand that the fight would've been closer than what it was.

The character is definitely better than he is in RotSAren't they all better in the tv series? Movies always do that because they don't have the time to really flesh out characters. The prequels were practically forced to focus solely on the characters from the old movies because people expected to see their back stories. If Grievous got a lot of air time people would cry that we didn't get to see enough of Anakin pod racing or bitching about sand getting everywhere.
Also don't get me wrong I'm not trying to imply that Grievous is weak or cowardly. I was trying to say that he's known for making tactical retreats when things go south. Otherwise he's ferocious and relishes in killing meatbags.

I had kinda mixed feelings about it, in all honesty. I thought it was overall pretty good and I like how it matched the visual style of the original trilogy in terms of set-design, costume design, and cinematography. The story was pretty solid, tho it felt like there were a few points where it was trying too hard to reference the original trilogy without it making sense and the plot was exactly what I expected, basically hitting all the beats A New Hope hit with a few things thrown in from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The characters were pretty alright and the dialogue was better than anything George Lucas wrote, but the pacing was really off. Things that should have been dramatic reveals were dropped casually and came earlier than they should have and the movie never really slowed down to create tension.

Nah, the best way to introduce characters and reestablish story is through expository dialogue and scenes that just allow you to take the situation in, look at the pacing of A New Hope, it established everything you needed to know about the galaxy and the characters while having plenty of slow, subdued, or tense moments, because it's these moments that hold a movie together whereas when a movie is a constant stream of faster and more intense scenes (not emotionally intense) it's harder to stay invested or really piece everything together, which is why I feel like some of the potential reveals were dropped on us in simple, direct terms earlier than they needed to be.
Basically a lot of information that would be important and really help the situation make more sense and easier to get invested in just isn't there. There's no real emotional reaction to some stuff that there should have been, it was still overall good and it's honestly the best Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi, it just suffered a little bit from the modern blockbuster syndrome where it's just a bunch of visually impressive things happening at the expense of the story being as fleshed out as it could be in the same amount of time and thus feeling a lot faster than it needs to be. It could have used some training stuff, explaining the force to the force-sensitive main character like Obi Wan did to Luke, explaining how the political situation has changed, elaborating on any of the characters a little bit more, that sort of thing. Not even just for the sake of the story, having scenes that are emotionally intense instead of intense in the sense of lasers and explosions or scenes that are basically downtime for exposition helps create tension and makes the action that much cooler, since it's contrasted to something.
That said, I'll have to watch it again to really start to form a more solid opinion on it and nothing about it was bad enough to ruin it for me. I also tend to look a little bit into movies, even when it's not the kind of movie you need to look at in detail, because of the film school thing.
I will say that the action was well-executed though, the lightsaber fights were nearly on-par with the OT and the ship-based battles were really cool and all the fights never got boring or anything, which is a good thing to go for if the movie is going to be mostly action.
DrunkN
12-29-2015, 10:21 PM
I feel like there was a lot left unsaid in this movie in order for things to be more fleshed out in the next one. All of the characters are presented on an "all you need to know" basis, but the film also reinforces the idea that there's more to these characters than we know so far. That goes for the protagonists and antagonists both.
I think the next installment will have much more room to breathe as a movie. It is clearly set up by the ending of TFA to have a stronger character focus, rather than merely covering a series of events that establish the characters. That idea in itself mirrors how Empire Strikes Back built upon A New Hope.

The older SWs movies probably wouldn't be successful if they came out today. When they came out there was nothing else like it and people were blown away. Modern SWs movies have to keep up with the flood of other sci fi movies that pack in tons of visuals and action. I'm not saying it's good or bad it's just the way it is.

Yeah, I figured as much going into it in all honesty. Modern movies go at a much quicker pace, and while the original Star Wars movies had more of a "fantasy but in space" vibe, this one was very much the modern sci-fi action movie in the vein of Guardians of the Galaxy, but with the aesthetics of the OT.
It would be boring if movies never progressed and if I want something that feels exactly like the OT I can always just watch the OT, while this is as close as you can get out of a modern, high-budget movie.

Unfortunately I doubt there's a chance of getting a "fleshed out" SWs movie. I think if Lucas had the tech and the money he would've made something like the prequels to begin with. We're lucky he was restrained by the old tech, limited finances and creative control. Now Disney owns it all and they're not gonna lose the mainstream audience by taking risks with their attention spans. I'm not being salty either it's just the sad reality. I'm no huge fan so I can't vouch for it personally but I've heard the SWs books are generally really good for character development. Disney or Abrams said the extended universe doesn't count anymore but that doesn't make the stories less good.
Btw I'm kinda hyped that Disney plans on making a lot of SWs movies in a short time. Normally I wouldn't think that's a good idea but I think Disney will handle it well and they can easily afford it. If the reviews for this recent movie are any indication my hype is justified.

I actually really enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and it would probably be pretty boring if they didn't mix the style up at least a little bit. I mean it could have taken at least a few moments to slow down, but at the same time I'm really satisfied with it and excited to see where they go from here.
I think having people say "nah George, you can't do that it's expensive and also stupid," and him having help writing and bringing in outside directors is why the OT worked as well as it did. Creativity and good art flourish under restrictions because it forces you to refine your ideas and really focus on how to execute them, whereas being surrounded by yes men and much better technology led to the prequels being how they were. The point is that I'm glad Lucas isn't making these movies.
If they're all going to be executed on at least the level of The Force Awakens I'm pretty excited, and the fact that they're all going to have different directors is pretty exciting because it means that there will be different stylistic approaches, at least to some extent, which is always good when you're going into the eighth and ninth movie in a series along with spinoffs.

It's honestly so frustrating, like I get color correction and improving the tracking on lightsaber blades relative to the hilts, that's normal and adds to the movie, but replacing a bunch of stuff with bad cgi that looks completely out of place, changing the implications of some scenes (making Greedo shoot first, adding Haydn Christensen to Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader yelling NOOOO as he kills the emperor) really rubbed me the wrong way.
I mean, it's possible to change some things in a movie after release and improve it, like Blade Runner for example, but George Lucas made almost entirely negative changes.

The rest are annoying but this one really bothered me and I don't even consider myself a big fan of the series. Not only is it insulting to the memories of millions of fans it also makes no sense. Why would Vaders force ghost be him right before he went to the dark side? What about when he saves Luke and overcomes his anger and fear to rejoin the light side? How would Luke even know who he is? Completely stupid, Lucas just wanted to shoe horn Anankin into the movie.

I just saw it and I thought it was mostly awesome. It was a beautiful movie. Everything was done well and well worth the extra for 3D. I thought the two new main leads did really good and the old ones did just enough to be seen well but not shift the focus onto them. I wish they had time for more character development(like mainly that really large character who talks to Kylo Ren sometimes) but it didn't feel shallow to me so I'm cool with it.
I'm not really liking how much they tried to replicate the original movies though. I was into it for a while but then it just seemed that everything was reference to them in some way. It wasn't a shot for shot remake of course but it kinda felt like it was as close to a reboot as you can get while still having the original cast in the film. It's as if Abrams wanted to reboot another beloved sci fi franchise but Disney wants to make as much as possible and they knew a real reboot would cause epic levels of butthurt among uber fans.
So yeah, great movie but not very original at all. I'm hyped for the next one though I hope it goes its own direction after this set up.

Some of them were pretty cool and contextually appropriate and some of them felt like they were thrown in at the last second without paying any attention to context and therefore felt kinda awkward and forced to the point of taking me out of the movie a bit. She was hyped up, shown a lot in media and then gets like 2 lines and 2 minutes of screen time. I assume she's coming back for the next movie but how is it gonna be explained? I'm worried it will be weak like "oh Han was only kidding we just tied her up" or not really explained at all.
Also wasn't it a bit surprising how quickly she gave up the info they wanted? They didn't have to rough her up or even take off her helmet. Since we see so little of her it kinda makes her seem like a coward.
I wasn't heartbroken but I thought it was sad. I even knew it was coming from being spoiled but it was still sad to see the end of an icon. I was surprised at how pointless his death was though. He didn't save anyone, it could've been avoided, he was betrayed and his body was just tossed into a pit and blown up. I'm not saying the scene was bad though I was just expecting the typical noble death most popular characters get.
taking me out of the movie a bit
Yeah that's a good way to describe it. I was immersed in the movie but then I'd start thinking about the previous movies.
Btw should we even be using spoilers? The movie is out and it can be assumed that a discussion about it will be riddled with spoilers.

The only thing I caught was at the start when the Star Destroyer blocked out the moon. I was reading up on the various sizes of the ship in the SW universe, and the largest Star Destroyer was called an "Eclipse Class". I thought that was kinda neat.

I thought Hans death was cool. It's purpose was not about Han, it was about Kylo Ren. It was somewhat of a passing of the torch as I see it.

I went last night and was a bit underwhelmed. I'll have to see it again, I think.
Would anyone recommend the 3D version? I saw the old-fashioned one.
I'm not really liking how much they tried to replicate the original movies though. I was into it for a while but then it just seemed that everything was reference to them in some way.
I feel like they could have gotten away with making about half as many and it would have benefited the movie. This and this.
One thing I'll say, there are a couple of real belly-laughs in the movie. I wasn't expecting that.
And seeing the chinless, witless, merchandising billionaire George Lucas all butt-hurt and bleating about his 'babies' in that interview last week gave me a good laugh.
Totally clueless.

Same as any 3D movie I've ever seen, it's cool for about 2 minutes, after that any time you notice it it's just a distraction. I was actually a bit upset when the ticket guy handed me my glasses, I didn't know prior it was 3D.

Would anyone recommend the 3D version?
My wife and I would. We both agreed it was well done and not over the top like most 3d movies. It made things feel more real. The only time I noticed them trying to make things jump off the screen was one shot of the bad guys ship where it was coming towards the screen. It was slow though and it just made it feel more massive and ominous.
One thing I'll say, there are a couple of real belly-laughs in the movie. I wasn't expecting that.I'm not one to really belly laugh but I was also caught off guard that some of the stuff made me laugh. I don't remember what scenes though so maybe I was just really into it at the time. I do remember I couldn't help but smile when Han and Chewie made their first appearance though. I knew it was coming but it was still a welcome sight. It felt like I was seeing an old friend after years of being apart. I guess I'm more of a fan than I realized.
I didn't know prior it was 3D.
That seems odd to me. Were you at a small theater? Where I go they have separate theaters for 3d and normal. On top of that they charge more for 3d. I'm sincerely curious how you would be surprised by it.

@DB, I wasn't going to go, and a group of friends was. Last minute I called them to see if I could get a ride, and they said they were already in the theatre. I asked my mom for a lift (was visiting for holidays) and just showed up at the cash, asked for an 11 o'clock ticket, and was handed the glasses.

I know this is a bit late but eh, seen it 4 times in the theater and also bought it on blue ray so current total is 5 :D.
