Maybe Maine had the lowest score because it has the highest participation (93%)? While the top 11 states to score on the test had a less than 10% participation rate. Since most of those states heavily favor the ACT over the SAT it only seems logical that the very few students who would opt to take the ACT and the SAT are those who felt confidant that they would excel at the test.

While states such as Maine who not only got the super try-hards to take the test but also all the average and below average students would rank lower when their scores are averaged out. This is most likely why Connecticut, which is yearly ranked as the top or near the top of the country for public schools, only ranked 31st.

A better evaluation of each state would to include both ACT and SAT test scores and compare them to over-all percentage of participants before contrasting one state's average test scores to another's.

I didnt read anything and assumed it was based on the entire population. So slightly retarded yes. But I agree with what you said, the smarter people would be more inclined to want show off and agree to participating, and even still the differences in participation from state to state is ridiculously varied, it's a useless statistic. I don't know why they didn't just take an even sample.

Let's not lose sight of the fact this story is about a guy who got drunk and did something stupid; it doesn't matter if he had the biggest I.Q. of all time; he was drunk - end of story.

Also, he could have been anyone from anywhere and had the same thing happen.
Just because he came from a certain part of the US is no reflection on the average intelligence of other people living there.

I really hate to generalize but after living in Maine for a few years I gotta say I'm not all that surprised by this story. Alcoholism is rampant up there and the hill billy mentality is a proud tradition. Southern Maine is pretty normal but the further north you go the less normal it gets. The guy in the story lived even further north than I did. In fact he was so far north he bordered on Canada. It's possible that he was actually Canadian or at least very recently Canadian. That and his redneck is a lethal combination.

Sorry to make a joke about a tragedy but the guy did light a powerful firework off his head it's hard not to joke about it. Also his mother is now saying there should be stricter controls on fireworks. Uh, would that prevent people from getting drunk and misusing them?

Holy shit DB, not only did you go ahead with lumping people who happen to live in northern Maine together, but then you included Canada, with billions of people of diverse cultural backgrounds from all over the world.

No matter where you look you will find different people, good and bad, smart and stupid.
So blanket statements like you're making here can only serve to offend people because they simply are not true.

Birds of a feather do flock together; but this does not mean that entire states, provinces, or countries are 100% 'redneck' or whatever label is being applied.
I'm sure there are sane people living in Maine who are just as shocked and in disbelief as the rest of the world is about this guy with the firework on his head.

Furthermore I would like to add that the real issue here is stupidity brought about through alcohol consumption.
That's one blanket statement I believe even those being spoken of would agree with, and I can provide dozens of stories involving alcohol and death to back it up.

His mom is saying what most people would say under similar circumstances; sadly I don't think there is any prevention for alcohol - fueled stupidity.
I'm so glad I quit over 20 years ago, just being near people who are on that stuff gives me the creeps because you never know when it's gonna go sideways.

4th of July Weekend I was down in New Orleans at the Essence Festival and its was amazing.

Seen India.Arie, Charlie Wilsion, And Frankie Beverly & Maze.

Got on Bourbon Street the next day and it was awesome.

Im going back to the the N.O. Saints or L.S.U. Tigers live or catch the Suga Bowl. (NCAA Football)
