3. - Adjudication – Creating INPs is encouraged but not necessary. If there are any score disputes the player in question must submit a separate INP of their game play for approval. In this case, it is suggested to create INPs for large scores and/or long play-sessions.

4. - Submissions: Mame Olympics (http://retrovg.herokuapp.com/games)

5. - All games must be completed and submissions received no later than Febuary 27th at 11:59 est. Any scores submitted after this time will not be valid.

6. Scoring: all scores are calculated but only top 5 from each team counts

I do think it's pretty unlikely we'll get lots of national teams (though there do seem a to be a bunch of strong Czech players here, for example) so I imagine it might end up as Usa 1 Usa 2 Usa 3 vs Rest of World or North America vs Europe. Or Barra vs Rest of World.

Maybe some sort of Team Southern Hemisphere could be arranged. As things stand, Ballas isn't just flying for the flag for Seth Efrica but the whole continent!

Does it make a difference? Most people are gonna be getting extra ships anyway, since Asteroids gives them every 10K and that's not changeable. Usually for games like this when they do a 5-life only track at (say for example) TG, your scoring ends after the 5th death. Might be a little trickier playing here, as you'll have to submit the score before the next death, as you get points if you run into an asteroid or saucer.

I'm not the one setting the rules but I think we should play it like we always do (MARP and Arcade both have 5 ship tracks). The Dip's are set to 3 ships to start and if you can't get to 10k, that's all you get. You'll need to be able to score at least 20k (extra ships are at every 10k) to play out the full 5 ships and you'll need to count your deaths. Score ends after your 5th death.

There are other games out there where you can't set the Dips's to change the number of starting men but have tournament settings and they all work (at least for TG and MARP) as described above.

Here are the TG tournament rules for Asteroids: Starting Ships: 3
Extra ship: Every 10,000 PointsNOTE: This is the [TGTS] 5 ship variation. Once you lose your 5th ship then your game is over. Please submit your score at that point.

Timber is also a game where you can't change the Dip's to 5 man start and I think these rules are much more clear so I'm going to post them as well: This is a Single Player ONLY variation! Your scoring attempt ends after your 3rd, 4th or 5th life depending on if you earn any additional extra lives during gameplay.

So, you could very easily rack up certain counters for a scoring run, including the one for clearing 777 levels that generates potions three levels in a row. That would be a huge advantage over someone resetting the game each time. The initials thing, too, though.

Shouldn't...the game would be a fresh boot every time you start it up or hit F5, and you're not supposed to play more than 1 game without hitting F5 to reset it.

A couple of questions - I submitted a score on Tetris to RU, but not long afterward I beat that score and submitted that one as well. Is that allowed? Will the better score be counted and put on the RU high score board?

In mamescore, we decided to delete the last 4 digits of the score (in yellow in the hof) to be sure the database accept tis looooong score ;-)

I wanted to play pole position but it seems a new world rom has been added with mame 0.150.

0.150: Andrew Welburn, The Dumping Union added Pole Position (World). Verified the PP2-10.2H and some minor rom name corrections. Added DIP locations to the Pole Position sets [Brian Trona]. Changed 'Pole Position' to clone 'Pole Position (Japan)'. Renamed (polepos) to (poleposj), (polepos1) to (poleposa1) and (poleposa) to (poleposa2). Fixed rom names.

I just want to know what is the correct version to use.

Just for full clarification. For Galaga when you play, there is a a slow fire rate and fast fire rate option when you start the game.

We are playing using the 'slow rate', correct?

Correct it is slow fire. The machine should also be set on Difficulty Hardest and be set to only give you a total of 5 lives for the whole game. You can check if it is on difficulty Hardest if the enemies start going fast during the end of level swarm on level 8. On the other difficulties they won't start going fast on the swarm until later.

What's with the "no saucer hunting" on Asteroids. If we're looking to eliminate the marathon game, the 5 lives rule has already taken care of that. And no, just because there isn't a timer, doesn't mean you can do it forever. The enemy saucer will eventually shoot down or crash into the last rock if, it is not already hit by one of your own stray bullets or your ship inadvertenly crashes into it. No offense to DK players (as I love that game as well) but saucer hunting is a much more natural part of the game and there is a lot more skill required to suacer hunting, than say standing next to kong's foot or near a spring and jumping up and down for 100 points, but this is allowed. What gives?

Does anybody know about differences in 2p versus 4p Sunset Riders? We have a 4p at GGA, and folks seem to think it is equivalent, at least based on home versus arcade play. We also know difficulty increases as you add more players, which shouldn't be an issue since it's a 1p score. Anybody know more they want to contribute on this? Anybody object to us using the 4p version as long as the settings are the same otherwise?

Does anybody know about differences in 2p versus 4p Sunset Riders? We have a 4p at GGA, and folks seem to think it is equivalent, at least based on home versus arcade play. We also know difficulty increases as you add more players, which shouldn't be an issue since it's a 1p score. Anybody know more they want to contribute on this? Anybody object to us using the 4p version as long as the settings are the same otherwise?

I'm fairly sure the only difference is the player selection. In the 2 player version player 1 can select any character. In the 4p version the selection is hard wired to each control set. Most games like this, X-Men, TMNT, Simpsons, have no other differences besides player selection.

But why would you rather use the 4p version? Seems simpler to just have everyone use the same rom. ssridersabd.

Point pressing on Donkey Kong is allowed. Wolf's comment was in response to the question about Asteroid's saucer hunting since Asteroids doesn't have a timer per level while Donkey Kong does.

Note that you can't actually hunt saucers on a single level in Asteroids for hours. One of the saucers will eventually shoot the remaining rocks forcing you to progress. Good players can still earn the majority of their points from saucer hunting though and stay on each level for a fair while.

This is not an RU contest. It is a contest created by Wolf involving multiple websites.

You are quoting a rule from RU and a rule from this independent contest and saying a difference between the two means the rule keeps changing.

Wolf can correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Asteroid rules for this contest were copied from TG.

Generally speaking, a 4-player version and a 2-player version of the same rom territory should be identical in terms of gameplay. Just have to start the game on the character you want to use.

HOWEVER, there are two important differences on certain US versions of the game that make scores not comparable to the ssridersabd romset used for this competition.

On these US versions, there is an infinite number of loops. On ssridersabd, the game ends after the second loop. Obviously, it's completely unfair to allow 3+ loop scores since there is infinitely more scoring potential. Also of note is that these multiple-loop versions do not become as difficult as ssridersabd - example being the Chief Scalpem boss. On the 2nd (and 3rd, and 4th, etc...) loop of a US version he will only be throwing 4 knives out when he jumps. On ssridersabd, he throws out 5 knives at a time on the 2nd loop which makes him the most difficult boss in the game (IMO). So even if you restricted play to two loops, the second loop on this version is easier than ssridersabd.

However, it should also be pointed out that there are no extra lives on the US revisions for some reason. On ssridersabd, you get extra lives at 20k and 200k, and there is a collectible 1-up on the Chief Scalpem stage.

The strange thing is though, I swear I've played arcade cabinets here in the US that did award extra lives at 20k and 200k. I will have to double-check the local machine here at Ground Kontrol to see how it plays. But generally speaking, if you don't know what version of the game you're playing and you can't clear 2+ loops, make a note of whether it awards an extra life at 20k or not. If it does award an extra life, gameplay should be allowable on that version because I'm not aware of any other major differences.

There are a lot of rules specific to this tournament that are not the "standard" rules so everyone please make sure your following them. I.E Pole Position is 3 laps only, 5 lives on tapper, etc, etc ,etc.

People can inadvertently submit an incorrect score without realizing they did so if you don't pay attention. I know I lost track on my tapper game and had to bail when I was over 100k because I couldn't remember. Game on :D

Pole position issues here.
So far i took quite a few mngs and my best game is in that format but i cant seem to view any of them. Did a bit of poking around and started recording in the inp format. While i can watch the inp it is not proceeding how it should. Its showing me not even passing the qualifying lap.

What gives and how can i access the mnp files to view them.

Hats in the ring now that I found time. Just as quickly done though (for tonight). Was blasting music whilst playing. Went to reset after effing up. Heard my computer making a loud rattling noise. Immediately shut off pc and made sure it was alright. Should be. Not doing it now, but was scary for sure.

This is still an emulation issue. I've never seen that happen on the actual arcade board, but I remember shortly after the game was first made playable in MAME I had the exact same thing happen in the last stage - tried to walk up an incline, fell through the floor for no reason and died. Now I tend to just keep jumping because I'm too nervous to actually walk up it.

Even in recent versions of MAME it's still screwy. I was using 0.156 and sometimes on ground declines you start to get "stuck" for a second like it wants you to free fall to the ground instead of just walking. Actually lost a life because of that stupid stutter fall too.

I need my Tron score corrected. I submitted 484393, but upon review of my pic, it appears to actually be 464393. Won't change anything at this point, but I'd rather it be correct. The monitor had a bit of bleed which made the 6 look like an 8, but looking at the graphics set in MAME, the top of the 8 is narrower than the bottom. Here's the screenshot and a screengrab of the graphics with 6 and 8 blown up for comparison. Sorry for the confusion.

We were talking over on the DKF chat about posting INP's if you had them, so I decided to zip up all the INP's on my highest submissions for each game. I also included screen shots if they were done on real hardware (Tron, Defender and Joust on a JROK multi-williams). A couple notes: the Defender one was on default settings, 3 ships+extras every 10K (I did it at an arcade and couldn't fiddle with the settings). I played 5 ships and hyperspace killed off the other two so I wouldn't get any extra points from running into something before I was able to snap a pic. I still had one unused smart bomb, plus the 2 extra (due to the extras every 10K). The Tron one was the one I posted above, and Joust was done on the correct 5 men only setting. Also, all the INP's were done using Wolfmame 106, except for Asteroids. I used Wolfmame 156 for that one, since that romset didn't exist in 106. Look forward to others posting INP's too :D

It was a lot of fun! Congrats to Team Penis, we Cosmic Triggers put in a valiant effort but it was not to be. At least I (barely) managed 1st in the solo rankings, for whatever that's worth.

I was going to do another writeup on all the games but I'll just give some quick thoughts on random things:

Toobin' is a terrible game.
My Sunset Riders and Smash TV scores were done on the first day of playing, and those scores managed to hold up as 1st places for the rest of the tournament. I kinda wanted to keep playing Smash TV to try in vain for that 1-credit clear that's been eluding me, but it wouldn't have helped the team at all.
I also wanted to play R-Type Leo a little more to try to get the no-miss clear, but that wouldn't have helped my team either... until the last few hours when TiF and Zerst passed me up. Jerks.
Ghosts 'n Goblins is a terrible game that should never be used for tournaments.
Anybody who had access to an arcade with a Roadblasters cab (or owned one themselves, cough cough Hector) definitely had an advantage because trying to play that game with MAME controls is assssss. Thank god Ground Kontrol had a cab for me to play! Ditto for Pole Position, shoutouts to Ken House for letting me get that score on his cab.

Totally agree. Good variety. I managed to completely avoid Outrun, Mario Bros, and a few others, and I got to dedicate decent time to some games I enjoy like Bubble Bobble, Toobin', and Zoo Keeper. I did push for Rampage, but alas, it was rejected. You'll have to give me some private lessons sometime. :D
