RU Minecraft: A New Home

I'm gonna start looking for a new server but I'd like some feedback so I don't waste my time with undesirables. Also if anyone else wants to look at servers be my guest. I'll gladly hop on when I have time and give them a look.

So far the only suggestion is grief protection and some grass to build on. Let's brainstorm other stuff we want. I'll go first.

1. A small-medium population of cool people.

2. As up to date as possible.

3. Mods like Magic Farm2 or something else with lots of content. Chocobos would be fun again, I miss them.

4. No creative mode, no ridiculous mods that make it feel like creative, no donor bonuses that give advantages, no PvP focus.


Start thinking and posting bros and bra.

Jadedcat's Magic Farm 2 is a modpack, and requires the Feed The Beast launcher.
I imagine there may be servers offering it but do not know for certain.
This would be nice, actually, but if you really want Chocobos then maybe you should look for a Hexxit server on the Tekkit launcher?

Frankly Mykeh's Drahexxy pack is better due to the addition of Optifine in the pack which automatically increases performance even on crappy PC's like mine.
Ya I know why even bring it up knowing we're not going to find any server running it - I'm just dreaming here.

@JG- I'm open to any mod launcher that is popular and trustworthy. I'm seeing mainly FTB when I check though and I have it installed still so I'd lean towards that if I had the choice.

@Tenser- I'm down for a big project but the unending part has me stumped. What could we possibly do that would have endless replay? For me I could get months out of building a town with npcs but I know that isn't gonna work for you and some others.



I wanted to make a big project and keep it a secret until it's done but now that the server is gone I might as well spill it. I was gonna dig a giant crater like depression in the ground that went all the way to bedrock. The goal was to populate it and make it kind of like a hanging garden with lots of stuff going on with a nature(lots of trees,water,flowers,ect) theme. I mainly thought of it because I haven't seen anyone else doing it and I'd like to see an NPC village that isn't just flat or on broken flatish ground. Anyone interested in something like that for a project?

If you had any projects in mind post them it might help when deciding what kind of server to play on.

You really love those gardens, so do I; that whole Cherry Blossom/ Sakura forest we chopped down over toward Twin Caves, then replanted with Larch and ? lol.
Sure turned out nice though and the butterflies that appeared were a very nice touch.

Midway was on its way to becoming a large collection of towers, with some connected to each other and the whole thing was going to be like a custom town of sorts made mostly of the Volcano biome stone set.

I liked the way Cave Town looked at the end, and the connecting roads really made it come alive.
So if that's the type of community project/ build we're talking about where different structures and locations are getting linked together, the making of our own towns and such, I think it would be fun.

Feed The Beast is great, so is Tekkit, I'm happy with either myself.

@JG- I had lots of plans for Cavetown :( I was slowly collecting a ton of flowers to plant all over the place and I was in the process of making "cave" housing under the main part of town. My goal was to connect all the houses and make it like one big house, kinda like an ant hill.

@Fomar- I don't think any of us mind as long as the server is cool and will stick around for a while. Did you have anything specific in mind?

@Cam- My goal is to find a place that we can come and go from as we please without jeopardizing the stability of the server so you being uber casual about it wouldn't be a problem. Come as you are and make yourself at home.


@Server search progress- I've seen a few I thought looked promising but I'm not sure what everyone will be ok with. For example does anyone have a problem with that mod Towny? Anyone use it before? That seems to come up a lot.

Also I assume we don't want any kind of role play focus right?

as far as towny goes i have a little experience with it as i've played a few servers with it, and last i recall i think its a form of land protection, i remember not liking it as much as the greif provention plugin but i don't recall why.

SJB and I tried this server last night and it seems pretty cool. No one was on when we tried but I checked a couple times today and I saw 3-4 people so it's not dead. The owner seems to be investing a lot of time and money into it so there's that too. I'm adding a screenshot to show our position, it's so much easier. We're on the 1.8.1 survival server that isn't peaceful or their old world. You'll see it in the hub.

I plan on finding a couple servers to frequent so I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket. I hate losing everything, at least with multiples I can have something to fall back on. I'm not in a hurry I just wanted to post it asap in case anyone was interested now.

Found a village with a ravine right next to it. Like RIGHT next to it. I thought I took several screenshots but I guess it didn't work. I'll post the only screenshot that did work, a ravine that cuts into extreme hills, it's nearby. Lots of ravine in this biome for some reason. Is that normal for birch forests?

That would be mine. My first MC house actually made out of wood and not built into a hill or into the ground.

Hover over the tab with your cursor to open the map menu; scroll down the menu to 'World 8'.

It confused the hell out of me until I figured out you need to scroll down that map list or you won't see the world we're all playing on.

Here's a screenshot of the northen most town in our nearly straight line of npc towns. DN and I secured it last night and he was derping around fixing it up when I left. It's actually the best of the three I think, it's a shame I didn't see it before I started on mine. Besides being large the town also has nice views all around it.

So I'm still playing on this server. Anyone wanna join? JG, SJB, DN and Katz have logged on but besides JG no ones been on much. I haven't either really but it's because I don't like playing alone. There's other people on the server but usually they play on other worlds(why do people play on peaceful so much?).

Stable server, multiple worlds, low population, almost exclusively RU people on my world, relatively untouched biomes on newer worlds and the owner said he's not worried about donations really so the server will be up a long while even if the population stays low. The only issues so far are the low population and the nether. Their original world is called Old Terra and it has a nether. None of the other worlds do, yet. I sent a message to the owner about enabling it for world 8 but I haven't got a reply yet(he hasn't been on minecraft.net to check it).


So are you guys getting your MC fix somewhere else? If so tell me where and I'll check it out. I'm not attached to this server for any big reasons, it's just the best one I've found so far.

Well I've been on the server a few times lately but am still feeling uninspired and so just placed a couple of blocks then sign out.

Maybe I'm mod - spoiled, and even though there is some new content in Vanilla, it still doesn't measure up to what the modpacks have to offer, in my opinion.

Looks like I was right :( I haven't heard from the owner guy in about a month and the server is down since a few days ago I think. It sucks but I'm glad we didn't waste much time on it.

@Cam- too bad that server closed it was very vanilla you might've liked it. It had some cool large biome worlds and the 1.8 vanilla world connected by a hub.

Found this new server that seems like it has a chance to stick around for a while. The owner is apparently gonna stream it occasionally and the few times I've been on he comes on and actually plays the game. The last few server owners seemed like they never played anymore.

So far I'm liking this mod pack. It seems to just add some spice to the vanilla. It adds a lot of spice to npc villages though. I found three so far and all of them were awesome. I took screenshots of the mountain one to show how broken it is. It's still pretty cool though. It could be fixed up with some fences and stuff and it would look epic. It covers a large area and it's got ocean on two sides. Also a pic of a volcano in the middle of the desert, I liked it.

The walls are spawned with the village. When I first found one I thought I stumbled on a very dedicated mayor but alas, it's nature.

I don't think there's much to explore on that volcano. I did come across some much larger areas of volcano, but I'm not sure if it exists as a biome like we've seen before. It might just be micro biomes or w.e they call it.

I've seen some mobs like "burning skeleton" but so far nothing like those infernals. I did see some undead horse knight though, he destroyed me and then camped on top of my grave. He had a charge move that was hard to dodge.

I followed the coast around probably half the start continent and I settled on an island with a village. It's not the biggest or the coolest looking village but it's almost entirely intact and it's loaded with npcs. It's also got a cave right under it but I haven't seen how big it is.

Ask away I don't mind. Go get whitelisted and I'll tell you my location later when I log in again. My spot is pretty close to that mountain village and a large magical forest biome.

Actually, since I've been unable to get the FTBInfinity modpack to load :( {it gets to the white 'Mojang' screen, then crashes every time - what I came here to say by the way} I opened the 'edit mod pack' tab, and this is what it shows:

As you can see, on the right hand side is 'Opis 1.2.3 ..' in the disabled column, by default.
I have no idea what this mod is but with it being situated where it is my guess is it's for use with servers, explaining why it's set aside the way it is.

Nevertheless I've been experimenting with different configurations but I should say that I've experienced this crashing on the Mojang screen before, while trying to load the 'The Dark Trilogy 1.7.1' pack from the 3rd party list.

Troubleshooting, I loaded up 'FTB Lite 3' , thinking it had to do with the fact these modpacks are all based on 1.7.1, but Lite 3 works fine, ruling out that possibility.

@JG- Are you sure it crashes? When I first loaded the modpack and server my game hung for a bit and I thought it was gonna crash. I was actually a couple seconds from forcing it to close when it opened up.

I'll try to look for a solution when I have some time today JG. I'm not sure where to look or what I'm looking for but I'll do what I can.

I haven't been on to check if you're online so I dunno if this is working for you but if it's not please post exactly what happens when you try to load the game with this modpack. I saw some people saying that the mod Botania is the issue and you only need to open the Jar file and delete the shaders but other people were having a different issue that caused a very similar crash.

I took up residence in a house in the corner of town. Some zomberts snuck in and got ahold of a villager before I could kill them. I'm pretty sure I blocked their path in now as I didn't encounter anymore afterwards.

I keep getting random zombros finding their way in and I keep plugging holes. You might've noticed the fancy plank/dirt walls I put up. I guess I'm gonna have to torch up the surrounding forest to be sure.

Also I did have a guard in town but he must've went over the wall and died or something. I need some golems if you got any iron yet.

My goal is to try and fit everything I do in my tiny plot of land. Making everything nice and compact.

Day 1:
-Walk 5k blocks to DB's place even though he's never on. :(
-Get up to Alumite on Tinker's Construct.
-Start experimenting with Botonia and Agriculture.

Day 2:
-Research all aspects for Thaumcraft and do some base research.
-Start breeding bees.
-Investigate the Nether.

Day 3:
-Start up on IndustrialCraft2.
-Do a lot of caving.
-Compress my smeltery setup and install a hidden enchanting setup in the floor.
-Start benefiting from time invested in the mods with things like backpacks, goggles of revealing, warded doors, etc...

Day 4: (today)
-Looking forward to getting into Blood Magic and Pam's Harvestcraft.

One page containing info on this modpack stated that it requires at least 1.5 Gigabytes of RAM to load - while I only have 1 Gig maximum.

@JG- Any plans to add more RAM in the near future? If not then you should start looking for a server that is easier on your PC. As we all know none of these servers last forever so we might as well have a back up right? Wish I had a better reply but I can't think of any other options. Bummer.

Pictures 1&2- I guess NPCs wipe out a bed and sleep now, at least in this modpack. It still weirds me out every time I come across it.

You might wanna hold off on doing anything on the server. Last night someone I never met before asked the owner about a map reset, as if it was foregone conclusion. The owner seemed to imply that it was planned but several people didn't like the idea so he changed his mind. Then the other guy said it should be put to a vote and the owner seemed to like the idea. I politely expressed my annoyance and let them know that a reset would be pointless because of how new server is and how it would make everything we've done worthless. I excused myself from the server before I said something less polite but as I was leaving the owner rushed to assure me that it's not gonna happen. So I don't know what's going on atm but I figured I should let you know just in case.

I'm pretty annoyed and not just because of potentially wasting my time building stuff. I'm also bothered by the lack of info in his server topic and in our PMs about the server. I didn't come right out and say "no map resets" but I thought I made it clear that my friends and have been burned by this before and we're looking for a stable map to play on. I guess he didn't get that message. I hate to be so dramatic but if they do reset the map I think I'll just quit and look for a server JG can join us on. I think I'll start doing that anyways to be safe.

I believe the sentiment is to have a closer community which I'm in favor of. I'll probably rejoin, especially if they use a decent mod pack.

Like I've been looking into realms that I'd make semi-public and record some highlights and have you guys/my friends on. Have a decent-sized population. There's issues though. Realms doesn't allow mods (I just play vanilla anyways). Gotta wein out the bad people and such.

There'd be interest if more of us joined. I'm not sure what you mean by VG hierarchy. All you do to get whitelisted on the MC forums is make a post in the topic and get accepted. It's pretty hard to get rejected.

No way of modding a realms for some bizarre reason. I do have a spare computer that I could run a mod server off of, but Canada apparently adopted data caps recently. Gotta watch that.

Do you not like mods at all? The server we're on now is pretty normal looking despite the mod pack. It adds new biomes and new stuff but you can choose not to get involved with them if you want. The only major change I see in normal biomes is improved NPC villages and there's nothing wrong with that. Gone are the days of scrambling to secure the town before night comes to ruin it.

I like them, I just haven't used them in some time. Usually when I play is group hardcores with friends. That's more appealing to me. Starting with a crew, trying to defeat X boss before everyone's dead.

At least as of late.

Everytime I've modded, or been on a modded server, there is constant resets where I lose my crap, an update comes along and wrecks the mod. Guess it's turned me away largely. I enjoy the vanilla game quite a bit anyways.

I'd more like to be in control of a server and it's mods anyways (Or have someone we know in control). Start out with all the ones we want, and leave it. No untold changes to mods causing a world reset, you know?

I'm actually still looking into doing my own server though. Looking into bukkit or ftb. Probably bukkit. Won't be as modded as some may like but we'll see.

We're just going to host vanilla for now from one of our computers and see how public interest goes with live streaming and such. Will hopefully make the jump to a paid dedicated server regardless.

Anyone know of a good host in that regard though?

I'm playing on a FtB Infinity Evolved private server. The system requirements are about 2-3Gb of RAM set aside for MC alone. If anyone wants in, let me know.

@Tenser- Stupid question, do I have to actually do anything for the memory requirement or does it just mean I need a lot available?

I have mine manually adjusted to give Minecraft a minimum of 4Gb and a maximum of 8Gb of RAM. The default is Minimum 256Mb and a maximum of 1Gb of RAM. So in short, yes. It takes all of five seconds and can show you in like two images.

@JG- I think you've exceeded the lifespan of your PC set up. In other words, you left the potato in the oven too long and now it's shrunken and dried out.

@DB: I'll send you the login data the moment I'm certain you're whitelisted. While private, the server also has a chunk claiming mod in FtB Utilities. After your first login I can give you permission to my chunks. I'm one of the closest players to spawn.
