Single Internet Gaming Bash

1. - Selected games will be played for the entire five week period Start will be October 13th and will end November 17th

2. - Auto fire is not allowed

3. - Adjudication – Creating INPs is encouraged but not necessary. If there are any score disputes the player in question must submit a separate INP of their game play for approval. In this case, it is suggested to create INPs for large scores and/or long play-sessions.

4. - Submissions: players should submit their scores via this form Wolf IX Video Armageddon 2 (http://retrovg.herokuapp.com/)

5. - All games must be completed and submissions received no later than 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time on November 17th. Any scores submitted after this time will not be valid.

6. Scoring: Will be based on the total number of participants. If there are 50 entrants, the highest score will receive 50 points. The next highest score will receive 49 points and will continue in descending order with the lowest score receiving a single point.

I am thinking of wolf contest IX start in October. The type of contest i am still unsure of right now I got these 4 ideas. It will be singles only no teams.

Ladders-Have players challenge each other in games for 3 weeks and then the last 2 weeks have a playoff with the top 8 or so

Missions-Something similar to this http://www.retrouprising.com/contests/closed-contests/july-s-retro-mission-contest/t15077/ in which players have to do different tasks to get points.

Knockout- have 3 weeks for seeding purposes and then the top 32 or so have a knockout

Single player IGBY- Like the last team contest but singles only.

I also put a 5th option known as player's choice if that get's voted the most we will vote on all the player's choices for the best one.

Keep it quick and fairly simple Wolfie.

That way it will fit in well with IGBY.

Wolf, I was going to PM, but it may be better to post here for everybody's reference.

It's 5 games a player, right? Just peeping at the IGBY scoreboard tab for players, there were 88 individual players who submitted a score that was in the top 5 for their team.

Say half of that number, 44, or even 50 for the sake of simplicity, sign up for this. 50 x 5 games is clearly not going to result in 250 unique titles, but the total number of games might still be pretty big, no?

I'm definitely going to enter, though with this format the best I can hope for is not to be in the bottom quarter of the table :face:

I can't play double dragon on this keyboard. I'm trying to use Billy, the character I usually use, and I mess up my qcb, qcf and f d df for my juggles...also the ff+c and ff+b are hard to hit cause mame frame skips on this machine and it throws me off.

Also, I have to pause the game to bind two button commands. Does anybody know how to permanently change the game input controls so they don't reset after every F5 reset?

Although top 12 overall makes logical sense, I do like the idea of a guaranteed spread of genres... especially for those of us who can't shoot and can't fight (>.<) and spend our time bursting bubbles or dropping apples on top of things.

I'd vote for the 16 (top 2 from each genre), or if not, the top 12 of those 16 - if you see what I mean.

The genre spread is pretty necessary considering the limited number of games in some of those categories. Just by having less competition, they are guaranteed more votes. So, I think I can safely say most people would agree taking the top 12 overall straight up is a little unfair.

That being said, I think the number of games submitted for each category should come into play. For example, let's assume the following:
- Super Hang-on submitted by 1 player
- Stocker submitted by 2 players
- Outrun submitted by 1 player
- Turbo Outrun submitted by 1 player
- 10 different shooters each submitted by 1 player
- Mars Matrix submitted by 3 players
- Raiden Fighters 2 submitted by 2 players
- A total of 85 games submitted aside from those mentioned above, but not in the racer or vertical shooter categories, making a total of 100 game submissions from the first round of voting.

In this example, we would see at least a 3:1 ratio of vertical shooter submissions to racing games, with vertical shooters being 15% and racing being 5% of game submissions. The fact there are so many different vertical shooters submitted means they will likely cannibalize each other in this second round of voting, while each racing game has a much higher vote count since the form REQUIRES two selections from a category with far fewer competitors. Stocker will likely have a huge popular vote count because it is awesome, but let's also imagine a couple vertical shooters get beat out by Super Hang-On in total votes by a handful (let's say 10 or less) of votes. Considering the intra-category competition and the original ratio of games submitted by category, it probably makes more sense to pick the highest vertical shooter in terms of popular votes instead of Super Hang-On in the final 12. However, others might still debate that point, and what we end up is kind of the same situation we can have in the USA where popular vote doesn't elect the president; the electoral college does.

So far, I haven't presented a clear solution yet, and I have probably just confused a few people. Here are the options I see for deciding the final 12 now that we are this far:
1. Change the voting form to not require selections in some categories so people can avoid games they really hate or don't feel comfortable playing on MAME. Then go top 12 by popular vote.
2. Have a third round of voting with either: a) the top x from each category where x is the number of drop-downs on the current voting form (20 total) or b) a set of the top vote getters as decided by Wolf based on the popular vote results so he has the discretion to decide which games should continue to have a legitimate chance.
3. Use the original game submission count by category to form a category ratio and take the top from each category. This could even go as far as say taking the top 1 from fighting and racing games, and a third slot going to one of the second place games in those two categories (like a play-in game). Whether Wolf makes that decision on his own, using public opinion, or a small committee is up to him since it could get complicated.
4. Just let Wolf make a final decision based on what he thinks is best since it's his damn tournament, anyway, and CaptainJivePants talks too much and this is supposed to be fun and easy.

Good lord Wolfie you've over complicated this! - can't we just start at some point soon??

How about (based on the number of titles in each category after vote #1)

Horizontal shooter (6 titles) = top 1 (most votes) gets picked for the actual tournament.
Vertical shooter (17 titles) = top 2 get picked
Arcade Platformer (17 titles) = top 2 get picked
Platformer (14 titles) = top 2 get picked
Puzzle (21 titles) = top 3 get picked
Racing (7 titles ) = top 1 gets picked
Arcade shooter (17 titles) = top 2 get picked
Fighter (6 titles) = top 1 gets picked

This increases the number of games from 12 to 14. However there is a least 1 game from each category and a fairer final voting system based on number in each sub category. (I think this is similar to what Captain JP was suggesting above in number 3)

Either way - can we just get on with it?

- For games played on this site, the INP is captured. Just make sure you use the score mode emulator and hit F12 to submit when your final score is visible.
- If you are using MamePlus GUI (mamep.exe, I believe), you can right-click a game and say record input when launching it instead of double-clicking and just playing the game.
- I believe Wolfmame and regular Mame require a command-line entry to get them to record inputs. At least, that is the way I ended up doing it during IGBY.

I used a combination of all three and actual arcade gameplay in the last tournament, and it ultimately depends on your choice of emulator. I ended up using the MamePlus GUI for a bit just because it was the easiest to start an INP recording, but I have been using RU the most to avoid remembering which INP files to keep, delete, etc. Regardless, I also tried to stream as much of my gameplay as possible to show what I could do live and build credibility that I do indeed exist and actually played the games. Let us know if you can't figure out how to record an INP with the emulator of your choice, and we will help from there once we know which one you are using and where you are getting confused.

j/k, I know exactly where you're coming from. I went in a little too hard on this tournament too and was getting pretty aggravated at times trying to raise these scores. Still, thanks for providing some great competition.

I've only gotten a few games in...gonna try and get a few more in today before it ends, just to get a higher overall score ;) I'm low on my internet usage though, so I'm just recording INP's and submitting them to MARP. I've been putting "Wolf IX Video Armageddon" in the description so they can be found. I'm mostly using 106, but I used 155 for Vanguard since I wanted to use a gamepad type controller so it'd be easier to fire and I can't seem to make it work on 106.

Thanks for the tournament! As I said I ended up putting a lot of time into this and got a bit frustrated with some of the games at times, but that happens in every online MAME tournament. Overall I liked the game selection a lot and it's what enticed me to come participate and register here. I guess I will share my thoughts on the games.

1942 - I have played this a lot and was pretty confident I would be able to take 1st on this. My first real attempt I barely scraped by 12 million because I repeatedly screwed up the last boss leeching, but I submitted it and hoped it would be good enough so that I wouldn't have to play it again. And it was!
Bells & Whistles - I knew of this game but had never really played it seriously. The whole bell mechanic takes some getting used to, and it's really hard keeping the 10,000 point chain past stage 4 because of that part in the middle. After some practice I was pretty sure I could do the first loop on one life, but on my final 2.45 mil game I died twice on the last stage from stupidity. The second loop is INSANE, I just tried to grab as many 10k bells as possible in 2-1 before one of those stray bullets killed me. I think I could've gotten a little farther if I could've done the first loop on one life, I may try this for MARP.
Bosconian - Certainly marathonable on these settings but I ended up getting too sloppy and lost too many lives. I was rather sad when my 1.4 mil score was beaten by TiF in less than 24 hours. I wanted to make another attempt at this, but figuring a full game of this would take 2 hours or more, I just let it be.
Contra - well.... a true classic but that leeching sucks. I definitely agree with the scoring rule change but it made it a waste of a game slot. Oh well..
Crazy Kong - I'm not a big DK guy but it seems like a lot of people are. Never played the Crazy Kong version but it wasn't too hard to adapt to the changes, but the problem is I'm not consistent enough to reach the killscreen. I feel like I could have done better but I just don't have fun playing this game, sorry :(
Dig Dug - Too pattern-heavy for me, even though I barely managed to squeak out 1st. Surprised there wasn't a ringer that could run the higher level patterns over and over and put up a monster score even on these 5 lives setting.
Fairy Land Story - I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS GAME. I did what I could to learn the best thing to do on a lot of levels (again, patterns...) but the lack of consistency on what special items the game gives you is maddening. Sometimes you get a crap item, sometimes you get a book that kills everything on the screen and gives you mega points. The only documentation on what controls the items is in Japanese and I had no idea what it was saying. Never really played this before and definitely not a fan now, I'd rather just play Bubble Bobble.
Galaxian - My best on an arcade cabinet is 178k, but I find it way harder in MAME for some reason. I think it's all the raster updates that made the frame rate look less than solid. I finally ended up with 146,350 (whoops I accidentally put in 147,350 on the website) which I was satisfied with.
Magical Crystals - neat game but the 6-1 leeching blows. Of course, it only affected the top 3. I screwed up the leeching bad even though I got there on the first life, but TiF did a much better job of it. At least I managed to finish it for the first time.
OutRun - classic game, annoying to control in MAME. Although I don't think I've really done much better than 32 mil in arcade either.
Stocker - games that are over in 2 1/2 minutes are great for tournaments. Broke 54k for the first time so I was satisfied.
Super Punch-Out - I have issues with the arcade Punch-Out games. They feel... unresponsive at times? Like you press a button and nothing happens. Maybe it's just me. Anyway I couldn't figure out any consistent way to beat the second Dragon Chan, even after resorting to savestate practice. Kudos to Jeff on his score.
Trog - At one point I liked this game but not anymore. Those stupid pogo stick enemies drive me up the friggin wall! And then there's the scoring system... you're completely reliant on getting random pineapples that let you eat enemies for big points, so no pineapple = a lot less points for something that's not your fault. I'd finished the game before for MARP but wasn't having much luck at all reproducing this... then I had an amazing scoring game where it was giving me plenty of pineapples along the way, if I hadn't finished the game on that run I think it would've stood at 1st place anyway unless somebody else managed to finish it and get the 25 mil bonus. So I end up with a new PB that I'll probably never beat because even if I ever wanted to play this again it would take a lot of luck to get that many pineapples. (or I suppose less warps to get more chances for pineapples, but...)
Vanguard - Another nice score from TiF that I thought I could catch but boy this game is maddening. Random erratic enemy behavior and bullets with gigantic hitboxes that eat up your bullets. Another case of "feel like I could've done better, but alas".

I started playing this because I love the Bubble Bobble games, and cute games in general. I pushed like crazy to get it in this tournament, partially because I was hoping others would be able to help me figure out the logic for items and patterns for tougher boards. Unfortunately, I have not heard from anyone who came up with anything much better than what we knew before, and I am still looking for the user on MARP and YouTube who can counter stop this to pick their brain. I figured this was part of what would make it a good tournament game, too, since most folks haven't heard of or played it, and there was no one pattern, glitch, or any other thing that would make it massively different based on experience. I will keep plugging away at it (in spite of hitting my goal of 1M), but it is a very frustrating game. I hope it increased the cake-cabulary and cake-strats of other gamers, and look forward to irking more members of the community by trying to get other shitty games into tournaments. :mad-tongue:

Thanks for the tournament! As I said I ended up putting a lot of time into this and got a bit frustrated with some of the games at times, but that happens in every online MAME tournament. Overall I liked the game selection a lot and it's what enticed me to come participate and register here. I guess I will share my thoughts on the games.

1942 - arcade outside of a handful of times when i was younger. I really wanted to get a 1cc on this and i had a great game going into the final 10 stages (albeit sloppy) with enough lives to surpass your 12m but i know you'd have come back with a higher score. That game drove me mad. Much screaming.

BnW - i did the same thing. Kicked ass all the way to the final boss and totally forgot the pattern until it was too late. The thing about this game is, the second stage drives me mad (unnecessarily long boss fight). So, i gave up on that.

Bosconian - I couldn't agree more. I was going to go till 2m but after 3hours of playing and 3am. Bad combo.

Contra - it is, what it is.

CrazyKong - I hate DK and i forcefully played this game. This was my fear starting the contest - that it would make or break me and ultimately broke me.

Dig Dug - I have the 30s worked out. Ironically, i couldn't stop dying in the 20s and had a miracle last man run, that ultimately ended due to me being an idiot.

Magical Crystals - ugh. I lost 2 lives that i should not have and botched final boss. Can't say i want to play this game again just to milk another 45k plus 9999 for the boss.

The Fairy blah blah - Fun game but yeah watching YT and replicating...uh what?

Galaxian - Never played this game before. Really hated it at first and then i went to Asbury and visited the Silverball Museum where they had a cab of this. Put up 101k and started to enjoy it. Figured out the game on my 120k run but really tired of games at the moment and will back-burner this.

Outrun - fun but ultimately couldn't be bothered. Did post my PB.

Stocker - too reluctant to change tactics

Super P - I feel you here. Clunky feeling game that seems to be really all about timing and then its not so clunky but yet it still is.

Trog - Also hate the pogo men, but the x 2 combo is wonderfully frustrating.

Vanguard - I felt the same exact way but then i had some sexy time with this game and i figured it out. I got to the last section of loop 8, with many men lost to stupidity (of course). I wanted to enter the infinite loop of stage 1 difficulty, which i believe is loop 9.

@QAOP - I don't mind being the princess. I, at times act like one and damnit, i'm pretty!

@wolf if mile doesn't respond. I guess either you use them or randomly give them to someone else.

Another great tournament! Thanks to all involved. I pleasantly surprised myself with a #15 finish, considering 7 of the games I never played before. I must have been delusional to think my Dig Dug score would hold the top spot til the very end. Unfortunately a couple of "nobodies" :+) popped out of the woodwork over the last couple days to pass me and squash my hopes and dreams.

A fantastic tournament with a very impressive turnout and wicked gamelist.
Well done to BBH and TIF, it was fun trying to keep up with you guys but in the end you were both too good.

My thoughts on the games:

1942 - Great game but I generally suck at 8 way verticals. Was pleased with my effort here
B&W - Could have easily improved here but found the game a bit "meh"
Bosconian - Great game in which I definitely didn't spend enough time on. Those two top scores are outrageous, top notch fellas.
Contra - Not a great tournament game.
CK - Had fun playing this again and getting past the 600k mark. Congrats Jeff on a massive score
Dig dug - Have never been a fan of this but managed to stick up a half decent score. Good to know I won't need to play this for a while! :D
FLS - Fun game but as others have said the items are confusing. Well done CJP for breaking the million
Galaxian - Having not really played this before I was looking forward to it the most. Didn't get my goal of 100k but confident I can reach this soon. Congrats Jojo on a very impressive score.
Magical Crystals - Didn't manage to break my PB here which is a bit disappointing.
OutRun - Had fun learning this one for the first time. Mad respect to those who can score 45mil+
Stocker - OMG STOCKER! :)
SPO - Quite frustrating at first but its a decent game once you get the timing down. Unfortunately not something I'd ever play outside of a tournament. Easy to see who the big dogs were for this game. Nice work Jeff and Jojo
Trog - Desperately wanted to finish this but couldn't quite manage it. Had 3 gameovers on wave 48 and one on 49 :(. Epic score BBH, that will take some beating.
Vanguard - A really fun game that I would like to keep playing. But knowing me, I probably wont!
