Sanctum 2 (http://coffeestainstudios.com/games/sanctum-2)

Not only do you have to built towers, you have to join the fray yourself and shoot things.

I love SAS Zombie Assault Tower Defense (http://www.retrouprising.com/video-games/all-other-games/sas-zombie-assault-tower-defense/t15684/) {please read on as I have better info here than in the other thread}
The things I like most about it:

You can sign up for a free membership, enabling you to save your overall progress, including a special accumulated in - game currency {SAS dollars} which in turn is used to unlock special weapons and defensive structures, making it possible to play much longer than you normally would.{in 'Free Play' mode, explained below}

The game plays alright as a 'Guest' , but unlocking the special stuff makes it all the more fun, and since the higher - tier upgrades take a while to unlock it is very worth taking the time to sign up.

The enemies look great and the Bosses are amazing for this type of game.
Spawning minions, spraying acid breath, smashing through barricades, reaching forth with spectral fingers .. needless to say, strong defenses and lots of firepower are needed to bring the big boys down - while their smaller minions continue to hammer away at you!

Spawn rate of enemies is nicely broken up and no two attacks are the same {except perhaps the first two, but this is to allow you go gain enough money to beef up your defenses} , in the tougher stages as you will have to perform repairs and upgrades while under attack so any breather is helpful, even just a second or two.
:beat-up::bulgy-eyes:

Level design is creative and with few exceptions the levels don't feel as locked to a grid as a lot of other TD games, however, the flow of some stages does not easily facilitate construction of defenses .. and about your defenses:

Barricades, barbed or razor wire, automated machine gun or cannon towers, and SAS machinegunners or snipers each with their own upgrades available; some upgrades alter the weapon type or rate of fire, so some experimentation is needed to figure out what works best for you.
Even with all of that, you'd do well to toss a grenade or two, order an airstrike, or call in gunship support once in a while to help the boys out when things look hectic.
:soldier:

Depending on which difficulty setting you choose, a certain number of civilians must be defended from a certain number of attack waves before you can advance to the next stage.
Upon the final wave of each stage, a Boss will appear along with an enormous horde of zombies; :tremble: if you are able to repel this final attack and save at least 1 civilian, you will see a 'Victory' screen and be rewarded with some of the SAS dollars mentioned earlier, and given the option to quit or continue in 'Free Play' mode.

I recommend continuing in 'Free Play'; this is where the game really gets intense - can anyone survive past wave 74, on any level?

Good news - you have friends in high places - periodically throughout the game a plane flies across the screen to drop a supply crate with random contents ranging from cash, to special grenades, air strikes, temporary gunship support, or maybe even a nuke!

Field Runners - I like it's "open" element so you can build mazes with the towers.

SAS Zombie Assault TD UPDATE:

As you can see by my signature, I finally broke my wave 74 'block' , and made it to wave 75!
:pirate: < Proud.

A few things I forgot to mention earlier:

My 'high score' was achieved playing on 'Normal' difficulty, using several upgrades I bought using my SAS dollars {which you must sign up to be able to save}: Titanium Tank Barricades {must have}, Grenadel Full Auto Caseless, Thundercat Gigashot, and M.A.D. Systems One Point Oh.

I neglected to mention all the weapons, and it is worth noting that the 'Special' turrets change 3 times when upgraded - starting with electro shock, cryo freeze gun, acid gun, then flamethrower, which are particularly effective but expensive to buy.

Unlike some other TD games where you are not allowed to block your enemies' path, in SAS ZA you are pretty much forced to create at least one blockade/ bunker, as the 'cheese grater' effect works a bit but some zombies are just too fast to get adequate hits on, and they often cover each other.

This is still my favorite TD game; right now I'm working on winning all the levels on 'Elite' difficulty - Shop 'till you drop is proving to be a real challenge!
:at-wits-end:
- which brings me to my final word {for now}:

While it may be tempting to buy the cheats offered at the start of later stages {for this game only: extra damage, tougher towers,or more cash for kills} I recommend you buy weapons/ barricades upgrades instead as they prove to be more effective, and remain in your inventory after you buy them.
So every time you sign in, your previously purchased goodies will still be there for you to use!
