What is it?
A stream of a Pokémon Red hack that includes all 151 Pokémon. The game is controlled by inputs to the Twitch chat. It's the equivalent of 40k + people with their hands on one Gameboy.

Can I play?
Yep. Just head on over to the Twitch channel and type in commands "up", "down", "left", "right", "a", "b", "start". Select is disabled to prevent soft resets.

What is the Anarchy/Democracy system?
After a full 24 hours stuck inside Team Rocket's Wild Ride (Rocket Hideout in Celadon City), the streamer implemented a democracy system, where the inputs of the previous 10 seconds were tallied up, and the most popular option was carried out. Within 10 minutes of being put into effect there was a mass revolt, as viewers thought that such a system reduced the swirling vortex of chaos into a extremely slow Let's Play. The command "start9" (press start 9 times, which does nothing but open/close the start menu) was spammed until the streamer put in a voting system which allows the will of Twitch to switch back and forth.
tl;dr - 50k players staged a micro revolt on Twitch about how the game is controlled.

Memes
Helix Fossil - Inside Mt. Moon the player is given a choice of taking either the Helix or Dome Fossil to leave the mountain. Afterwards, in the chaos of battle, often the item menu is opened up and the item is selected for use, which results in a "OAK: RED! This isn't the time to use that!". Doing this repeatedly gave the impression that the trainer is constantly asking it for advice.

The PC
The PC is used in game to manage Pokémon and items storage. It is also able to permanently release stored Pokémon. The chaotic nature of input makes using the PC extremely dangerous, as the delayed broadcast of Twitch leaves players unable to make quick judgements to what is actually being viewed, making accidental and erroneous selections very common. Releasing the wrong members of the team could make progress impossible.

Almost every time a Pokémon center is entered, a very dramatic battle occurs on the input, as trolls and bots attempt to get the player to the PC in a sabotage attempt. Other times, PC use is/was unavoidable to swap out team members. None can resist the PC's siren call!

The Ledge/Ledge 2: Electric Boogaloo/Ledge 3: The Ledgening
Ledges are terrain features that let you proceed downward off of them, but not upwards.
In a cruel twist of fate, the game designers back in 1996 placed a key areas where the passage is a long straight path with many ledges below, and successful passage is required to proceed in the game. In normal gameplay you simply do not press downward to proceed, but in the swirling vortex of Twitch chat, this simple task is nigh impossible.

They have lost to every Elite 4 member at least once so far except Bruno. So far, we are 6-0 against Bruno LOL.

What a letdown from the epic moments earlier....

Looks like we're just going to bash our team against them until they level up enough to win. Which is fine in a way, since Red has a really high level team. Lance too, we completely lucked out with that first encounter, even if it was the greatest pokemon battle ever performed.

If we could switch the team order that'd be nice.
Zapdos upfront would sweep Lorelei's entire team, giving us a good start to take on the rest.
Helix can sweep Bruno on its own, followed up by Zapdos to thundershock Agatha's entire team to after-death.

Lance is genuinely hard because the dragon type resists all our heavy hitters elemental attacks. We really lucked out with Venomoth at the end, but Lapras with ice beam would be really handy for that fight.

Twitch Plays Pokemon Crystal started about 7 hours ago. They just reached Violet City. Their current party is their Totodile, "LazorGator/King Leer". They have 3 other Pokemon but they are really low-leveled.

The first thing we did after starting the game was save. Let this set the tone of how productive we can be for this game.

It then took twitch 10 minutes to successfully escape the second floor of your house, and talk to mom. Stairs might be a bigger obstacle in Crystal because they're built into the wall.

GEN 2 MUSIC SO GOOD. Such a huge improvement over Gen 1 music.

They just beat Falkner. Not a big deal since he's a loser with only lv. 7 and lv. 9 Pidgey and Pidgeotto.

At lv. 17 Totodile is sucking up ALL the EXP. Not very good for future endeavors.

It's funny how you don't notice the little differences between the generations until something like this comes along.

Gen 1
-Dedicated release menu
-Can only release pokemon deposited in the box
-Gives you a final confirm dialog

Gen 2
-Relegated to sub menu
-Can release directly from your party
-Doesn't give you a confirm dialog

Gen 1 method makes the menu harder to get to, but once you're in it, it makes a release spree very easy - see Bloody Sunday.
Gen 2 method has your pokemon in danger all the time, especially the leader, since getting to the PC usually has a bunch of A spam stacked forever.

Amusingly, they happen during almost every democracy period, which stops all organized progress.

Their egg hatched into a Smoochum. They managed to get past the Sudowoodo and now need to get into the Burned Tower.

They set the sound to stereo. Awesome :D. At least the music is good enough when we get stuck walking around the security checkpoint building that it doesn't become annoying, lol.

Game Freak must have changed the timing on the inputs slightly in Gen 2, I notice the player turns in place a lot more often than it did in Gen 1.

The start menu seems more sensitive too. It's really annoying.

Morty's Gym will be a struggle. The winding path is pretty long, enough time for anarchy to muster up the votes for an overthrow, and down into the pit to do it again.

In Crystal you can get a free egg from the daycare.

It hatches into one of the baby pokemon introduced in gen 2 (Azurill, Pichu, Smoochum, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Elekid, Magby, any others I'm forgetting).

Our Smoochum is shiny I believe, the insane odds of this occurring is of course appropriate for this insane event.

Somehow we are catching a lot of pokemon. We got hoothoot, an extra pidgey, a drowzee. Pidgey and Hoothoot got put in the daycare. No hooters for AJ.

Apparently the plan is to get the free Eevee from the Radio Tower and evolve it into Vaporeon.

Watching them derp around in the strangest places is annoying, but whenever I look away they make progress D:.

Gen 1 is most familiar to more people because of Nintendo's big media blitz alongside the game's launch in the US (I can't speak for other regions). It's only natural that there is less interest for the later games.

Now that TPP is past the usual internet hype -> hype crash cycle, we're reduced to the people who have actual genuine interest in it.

It's weird because walking around campus I heard about everything that happened throughout the first game, but this is the first I've heard of them beating Emerald, I figured the interest in it completely died about partway through Crystal.

For the most part it did.

During Gen 1, after beating Misty the stream was constantly above 30k viewers, at times being the #1 viewed stream on Twitch, with over 100k viewers, beating out games like League of Legends and Dota 2 which have multiple streamers playing at once.

During Gen 2 we started strong but never approached the heights set by the first game, and not helped by the fact that it is a very long game.

In Gen 3 I don't think we surpassed 10k viewers at any time. As I said before, the novelty has worn off, and people are less familiar and nostalgic for anything past Gen 1.

I kind of watched on and off towards the end of emerald, especially during the E4. they would beat one or 2 people, then lose. Go back in, get stuck trying to even talk to the E4. I'm really surprised they made any progress at all, let alone beat it. And whenever the vote for anarchy/democracy started, it would turn democracy, but as soon as that input vote timer was over, so many people wanted anarchy back that there were never any inputs during democracy.

It's an interesting idea just to see how long it takes, and that basically random commands are being shouted at the game for days upon days. That said, it's days upon days. I'd rather just read updates here than actually sit through any of it.
