This is the same as previous year's 2012 Gaming Champ Contest (https://web.archive.org/web/20130908125440/http://www.retrouprising.com/contests/open-contests/2012-retro-uprising-gaming-champ/t13029/) and 2013 Gaming Champ Contest (http://www.retrouprising.com/contests/open-contests/2013-retro-uprising-gaming-champ/t14464/).

This contest will test everyone across multiple genres and systems to determine the all around best player of 2014.

The person that earns the most points will be crowned the best Retro Uprising gamer of 2014. Click this link to see the automatically updated scores and ranks (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&module=league&a=2014).

Only your single best submitted score in each of the games listed below during 2014 PST ( GMT-8 ) will count.

The Games:

Speed Run Adventure (Fastest Time) = Arkista's Ring - Nintendo Entertainment System (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/233/)
Fixed Shooter = Cosmo Gang the Video - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5160/)
Vs. Fighter = Double Dragon: Neo Geo - Arcade/Coin-Op
(http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7885/)
Pinball = Dragon's Fury 2: Dragon's Revenge - Sega Genesis (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&do=play&gameid=1150)
Caravan Shooter = Final Soldier Special Version - Turbo Grafx-16 (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/1372/)

Run 'N Gun = Metal Slug - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&do=play&gameid=11855)
Falling Block = Monster Slider - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/8037/)
Run 'N Jump = Ninja Kid 2 - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5882/)
Golden Age Arcade = Pepper 2 - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5950/)
Beat'em Up = Undercover Cops - Coin Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6563/)

The Points:

"Percent" is Your Score divided by First Place's Score times 100 rounded to a whole number. In other words you will gain points just for increasing your score even if you can not beat the score above yours.

1st place = Percent + 100
2nd place = Percent + 90
3rd place = Percent + 80
4th place = Percent + 70
5th place = Percent + 60
6th place = Percent + 50
7th place = Percent + 40
8th place = Percent + 30
9th place = Percent + 20
10th place = Percent + 10
11th and beyond = Percent + 1

You gain 10 bonus points if your personal best score also clears (beats the game) the game.

To discourage players from waiting until the end of the year, there will be a small bonus for submitting early. You will gain 1 point for every month (30 days) that your best score ages. If you submit a new personal best the clock resets. A score submitted Jan 1 is worth 12 more points than a score set in December.

Good luck and happy gaming!

Really digging Gunbarich atm. Breakout style game. I just posted ~11.15m but it's very weak given the potential for monstrous multiplier bonuses with the right luck. I expect this score will be at least 40m+ by the end of the year.

Arkistas Ring, more like Revenge is very frustrating, used 5 credits on the last stage... All the way is easy up to Stage 30 and 31 being the last...

Your stick is likely 8-way, and Pepper II is best played with a 4-way. Either use the d-pad on the PS3 controller or use the keyboard arrows.

As far as people having issues getting Pepper II to accept a credit/start, you have to wait a while for the attract screen to run a bit and then start. Use the 'end' key to speed up the loading and attract sequence a bit to get it to work.

Pad for PS3, stick for arcade. It felt better with pad though so I might switch to that for Pepper

Ballas, i find IE 11 works very well ( i would assume most iterations as well). I am having issues with FireFox. Like you i was able to play games in FF with no issues, then one day the game box would pop-up and immediately disappear. I tried IE and the games load instantly. Tried firefox again and while the games do load it takes ages.

I would suggest that route if you do not already do that.

Just completed Arkista's Ring. I thought the game was supposed to loop from what i read. I never stopped the game on key acquire. My time should be 23:10 or 23:09. I had 24:06 on my watch after the game went to the title screen. Watching a youtube video it took 57 seconds and change for the game to finally hit title screen after key acquire. Please dont make me do this again.

It's damn slow really all the way through. I use my keyboard. It can slow you down badly bumping in to other cars as they never seem to be affected badly by it.

The cool thing in the arcades were when you continue or right from the start you just add extra coins and upgrade fully.

D.B. Cooper
02-13-2014, 12:08 PM
Without watching, I'm guessing they are using turbo the entire time. My local arcade has one of these and the only way you can sniff one of the track records is to dump a bunch of coins in and fully upgrade your vehicle and add a bunch of turbos so that you never run out. If you want to learn how to get the best score on a single coin I suggest watching mine or Ballas's video on here or find a playback on MARP.

This game's scoring system is tough to figure out. From my experience it seems you are better off finishing a few races with the fastest possible time instead of trying to get a long ways into the game. You get more points finishing three races fast than you do finishing 5 races slow. It's kind of frustrating that you have no clue what your score is until the game is over. I've had runs where I thought I'd get a bunch of points just to see my final score suck.

Kong
02-13-2014, 12:18 PM
I think the only reason the videos are faster is because they either inserted more coins or they earned upgrades by collecting money bags on previous rounds.

You can try this but I tried it and didn't notice any affect.
In game you can press Tab then select "Analog Controls". Set "P1 Pedal Speed" to 255 and "P1 Pedal Sensitivity" to 255.

Ballas
02-17-2014, 12:34 PM
I think I just finished 6 tracks and had under 1mil.... On the last race the guys were too fast so I was just trying to collect money bags without finishing a lap and my score was very low so that doesn't seem like the way to go.

What is speed run about?

How do you move that car?... I cant push it more than 5 steps

Is it possible to play this game with a joy?

Yeah. I play with the joystick. Kong's suggestions helped a bit but after 5 races i only had 605k..yet after 4 i have 575? game is whack.

I believe what i have listed above is what worked for me. I recently cleaned out my arcadeox directories as i was having issues with both firefox and IE loading games. So my settings are reset.

You're dead right Ballas, it says this on the splash screen. I can't help thinking it's weighted more towards the finish time than number of races, as DB Cooper says if you zip through the first 3 easy tracks it seems to rack up more points than struggling through to track 6...

:sheep:

A different question... does anyone reckon there's any advantage to the order in which you buy the goodies? Wheels or top speed? I remember playing this on the ZX Spectrum and you could just load up on all the good stuff at the start by sacrificing a couple of credits :p

I finished 6 or 7 races the other day and didn't have a great score. I also think that on the race that you loose you must try and get the best position possible. If I recall correctly I did 5 races on my score of 1,198,000.

I don't buy "goodies" but spend all my money on turbos. My theory is that when you power up, so do the computer trucks. If you never power up, the computer doesn't either.

My tips:

1. Never upgrade, use all your money on turbos.
2. Figure out on each track where using a turbo does the most good. Using a turbo to bounce off the back of another truck or into a wall is bad.
3. Especially on the first couple of tracks, don't just win. Even if in first, use your turbos to get the best time possible.

I'll give this a whirl, then!

I did (when I thought the score was mebbe related to how much cash you had in the bank) used to try to get through as many tracks as possible without even using nitros, but when you reach track 5 you haven't a chance of keeping up with that grey b****** :D

I also asked about it a few days ago. Althought I made a score in it, I dont see myself in the board.

You scored 10800 and are in 7th on the scoreboard. You didnt complete the game so its not on the 2014 gamer of the year leaderboard, as we are tracking it as a speed run

Barra

But I did not complete any of he games of the 2014 gamer of the year leaderboard, and I m in all other boards...
So, speedrun means that your score counts only if u finish it?

All the other games are for score so you dont need to complete them. Arkista's Ring is the only one you need to complete to be on the 2014 leaderboard. If you dont complete it, your time wont be recorded on the 2014 leaderboard.

Thank you Ballas. I had a great run that game.

Yes. All bonuses are at 4 mil per as Barra noted. There has not been any variation to this bump yet.

While all bonus stages are essentially the same, I suspect there may be an end to this game as the last bonus stage I saw (and was not able to complete) appeared to be a bit more complex than the others. On the other hand, the game could also possibly go on forever and was just adding a layer of complexity.

Has anyone played the first Dragon's Fury? Was there an ending on the first game of the series?

GameFAQ suggests there is an ending to the first one
Go here -> Dragon's Revenge Cheats, Codes, and Secrets for Genesis - GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/genesis/586151-dragons-revenge/cheats)
Play full mode and put the stage 6 cheat in. I did it but couldnt even get to a bonus stage :/
Maybe if you complete one, it will take you to the final boss or something?

Completing the bonus stages are mandatory for a big score.

Each bonus stage is worth 4mil. Each bonus stage gives you a multiplier ball so I assume if you complete 2 stages quickly back to back you might get 8 or 12 mil for the second.

Patience is key. Hold your flippers up to catch the ball. Then aim and release at optimal time.

Each time you complete a bonus stage then repeat it a little extra complexity is added to it. I wouldn't be too surprised if there was an ending but I would guess it would probably come after 1 or 200 million points.

Getting the 3 small center crystals to all be light blue gives you an extra ball.

If my memory serves me correctly, you get an ending if you beat all the bonus stages... it's been about 7 years since I was into this game, so I could be wrong.

Kong's post is on target. This game is all about patience and ball control. It's not an immediate gratification type of game.

I was not aware of the crystals/extra ball thing.

You'll receive an extra ball for each completed bonus round.

Other than the individual 4 mil bonus rounds, I've not noted any other approach to accumulate points of any significance.

I'm not sure what impact the floating head has (or how to activate it). Relating to the floating head, a floating crystal appears as well too. I suspect that just running over the crystals in the center board controls these things but have not been able to determine anything conclusive.

I'm not sure what the hearts on the left give the player.

As for the multiplier, I'm not too sure how this works either. The most I've ever bumped this up to was 3x I think (the game board implies you could get this up to 8x). I do think the multiplier starts to activate after a completed bonus stage, though to the best of my knowledge, I've never received more than 4 mil ever on a single completed bonus stage, with or without the multiplier. The multiplier may possibly be for non bonus stage points accumulated only. Once a ball sinks, the multiplier always resets.

As for the ending, the last bonus stage I played just had that end game feel to it. I'm aware that this is far less than a conclusive statement, yet I'm holding firm to the feeling (for now at least).

Other than the individual 4 mil bonus rounds, I've not noted any other approach to accumulate points of any significance. You can try to keep the ball in the top right corner. This is a slow and tedious technique but it is fairly safe and easy and can give you a few million if you have the patience.

I'm not sure what impact the floating head has (or how to activate it).Three light blue crystals activate it. You change the colors of the crystals by running over them. Then the head follows you for a few seconds and drops a crystal. Hit the dropped crystal for an extra ball.

I'm not sure what the hearts on the left give the player.I activated them all once but not sure what happened. Dropping all the way down the left gives you a stopper below the bottom flippers which offers a lot of protection.

As for the multiplier, I'm not too sure how this works either. If you get halway through a bonus round you get a 2x ball. If you complete the bonus round you get a 3x. I think that is separate from the board multipliers. If you lose the ball in the side gutters you activate the board multipliers. Not sure if they do anything else or not. In Devil's Crush they did so I kind of think the multipliers have some other significance that I haven't figured out yet.

As for the ending, the last bonus stage I played just had that end game feel to it.What do you mean? What was going on?

What do you mean? What was going on?

This would be best explained via a video capture of the bonus rounds in question, though I'm not able to provide these. There are two examples within the verified score capture. They will be very near the end of the video. I recall doing fairly well on one round, and less so on the other.

To the best of my recollection (I've not watched the clip): you're in the dragon's mouth and must first knock out all of the teeth, then a character comes out with crystals swirling around the character. You'll have to first destroy the swirling crystals, then hit the character until destroyed. Once complete, another character (or perhaps two) appears with even more crystals swirling faster than the last set of crystals that surrounded the first character. I was not able to take out this second set of crystals to get to the second character/s.

The above process was more time consuming than previous bonus rounds. This could be indicative of an end nearing, or simply a matter of added complexity to yet one of many more bonus rounds to come.

If one is able to pass the dragon's mouth, where might the next battle be set?

Again though, other than a feeling, I'm fully admitting that my end round suspicions are purely speculative and very well may be wildly inaccurate.

The yellow/gold ball you get for completing a bonus stage is 4x. It has a timer and counts down 5,4,3,2,1 when about to expire.
From what Ive seen it max's run if you enter a bonus round with a 4x ball it doesnt make any difference, you still have a normal ball.
Ive seen a 2x blue ball as well.
The 3 hearts at the top give you 200k. Not sure what else.

I just watched Max's high score. I agree, very final boss feel.

Each time you complete a bonus round it highlights one of the characters on the bonus screen. Max highlighted all 8 characters. I think he is right, level 9 is probably the final boss. I think he was only a couple hits away from beating it.

32 of his total 39 Mil came just from completing bonus levels. Another mil or 2 came from the bonus round multiplier and another couple mil came from just playing the bonus rounds. So nearly 95% of his score was from the bonus rounds.

Some how he destroyed the crystal in the top right corner to access a secret screen. There is 4th bonus entrance there. Any idea how you did that?

There are 3 other bonus stage entrances. They have grey arrows pointing to them. To activate them hit them once, then kill all the guys that come out of them then hit the entrance again to enter.

Locations
Top screen. Top center.
Center screen. Top right.
Bottom screen. Top left.

For completing a bonus stage you get 4 million points, an extra life and a multiplier ball. The multiplier ball multiplies all of your points while it lasts. You lose it after about 60 seconds or if you die or if you enter a bonus stage. I've seen the multiplier range from 2 to 4. The number of the multiplier might be based on how long it takes you to complete the level.

Completing a bonus stage also gives you an extra ball on screen in the next bonus level. Catch the extra balls with one of your flippers and play with just one ball. ;) You are less likely to lose a ball if you are only playing with one at a time.

He turned all all the 3 hearts in top left corner red twice. It says "congratulations" when you do it. Not sure what else happens. He got got a stopper in the center and right gutter. The 3 red hearts might have triggered that the second time but they definitely didn't the first time.

Max, you have a 10% chance of a free ball after game over. You submitted your score too early to find out if you would have got it.

So by the looks of it, every enemy you defeat on the playfield lights a red light. Every 10 red light, lights a shiny light (the flashing blueish ones) and every 10 of these flashing lights will increase the bonus multiplier on the play field.

The crystal is difficult to destroy in earlier rounds (possibly not possible). I generally just attempt to continually bash at it as it is an easy shot. The shooter on the right also does a great job bashing into the crystal too. At some point in the game, and I'm not exactly sure when, the crystal becomes much easier to destroy.

Once on the right side, or the secret screen if you will, flipping the ball into to the bonus round slot is not so simple.

Max, you have a 10% chance of a free ball after game over. You submitted your score too early to find out if you would have got it.

I just assumed that was a free game chance akin to most classic pinball games. As I'm flush with tokens, my inclination was to move along. Thanks for noting this and the numerous other items.

I'll try to make use of the various things brought up in this thread on my next attempt sometime this week. Hopefully there is solid info here for others inclined to work on this game too.

@Max, I think the only additional things you should add to your gameplay are go for the pad locks to get the stoppers. Turn the center crystals light blue for an extra life. Wait until after the game over for the 10% chance of an extra life. You pull the plunger all the way down. I like to pull it half way. That gives you a better shot at starting in the top screen instead of center.

I already put my 2 cents in earlier in this thread about the scoring system. I'll bet the person with the highest score will have finished the first 5 races the fastest while losing the 5th race. It seems it penalizes you for having a slow race so if you burn up all your turbos to win race 5 and then have a slow race 6 you will end up with less points than if you just barely lose in race 5. This is just a theory though and I've not had time to test it. I have played the game enough though to see a correlation between finishing races fast and getting a high score which is why one of my tips was to complete each race as fast as possible even when you're winning.

You can test this in full mode but my local arcade has one of these and I dumped a bunch of quarters in to keep continuing to see how high I could run the score up by finishing a bunch of races and when I quit after around 10 races, my score was less than 1M. The high score on the game was over 2M so this leads me to think that they achieved this score by dumping a bunch of quarters in and upgrading their truck to the max and buying a crap load of turbos so that their times on the first tracks were incredible. My times with a non upgraded truck using just the tubos I could buy without using more quarters were way slower than the fastest lap times on the machine.

Yeah. I went higher top speed, faster acceleration, then wheels. I went for the first two as I was always running out of nitros, then wheels for control.

I like your thinking too DB. It makes perfect sense.

I'm going to try tracking race times against total score to look for scoring patterns. I'm not sure how long I'll need to gather enough data.

I'll also try massive nitros in full mode, though I always suffer from heavy lag anytime I play any game in full mode so this may be a difficult task.

It would be nice to understand the exact scoring system, though this may not be available without digging into code (beyond my scope).

I've been trying the no-goodies DB strategy but it hasn't seemed to be paying off for me yet... Max, if you don't mind me asking, did you top up the max speed, acceleration, tyres etc more than once? Maybe the key is not to go too crazy on the upgrades?

It is fun doing this on one credit, as I recall in the arcade whoever had the most 10p coins in the machine tended to come out on top :p

I just tried to watch my 1,174,000 game and it goes out of wack after the second race. I did notice though that I purchased a top speed upgrade after the first race but used all my money on turbos after the second. I was hoping to tally the times for each race and compare with others.

It looks like purchasing an upgrade or two is probably the better way to go.

Just watched Ballas's 1,198,000 score and I have to say I'm baffled by what I saw. This is not meant as a put down because it obviously worked but the lap times were way slower than I expected. I wish I could watch the rest of my playback. He won four races and lost the fifth.

1. 66.27 (my time was 61.8 )
2. 57.75 (my time was 49.09)
3. 52.57
4. 46.45
5. 48.85

It's very possible that his times in the later races were faster than mine but this certainly blows away my theory that you need to be fast in all races. I'm pretty much back to square one in figuring this out. I'm gonna go watch maxh's run and see if that helps.

Ya, I don't get it. I just used a save state to do a game where 3 of my four wins were faster the maxh's, my average time was faster and I finished third in the 6th race compared to maxh's 4th. My score was 951,000?

did you top up the max speed, acceleration, tyres etc more than once?

After race 1: speed; after race 2; accel and tires; all other races: nitros until available cash was depleted.

I did play a game last night in full mode where I started with maxed out everything. I ended up with a 800-900 score despite some jiffy race times. While this may be a direct result of my limited abilities rather than resource use, and while inconclusive, it's an interesting side note.

"Salary based on average track times and number of races." I'm not buying it.

I'm not either. "Salary" however, is not the same as score.

Other elements obviously are at play. Lapping maybe? Picking up of items (cash and nitros)? Some variable based on all/some of these things?

I'll continue to track race times against score to gather data.

I'm hoping Barra will come up with some pearls of wisdom!

Early tests suggest getting a slower time and picking up more bonuses is better. I finished race 1 in 59.4 seconds while nabbing $60000 and 1 nitro, points were (after not moving on race 2) 736000.
I think there is a base score after the 1st race of 500k as I cannot seem to get below that (without losing).
Ill get a boatload of info on the weekend. Need to find a version where save states work with this game.

D.B. Cooper

I was able to get save states to work although it was glitchy. I saved at the "start the next race" screen and when I would hit F7 it only brought up a small portion of that screen but I was able to hit the next race box and it would play the next race just fine.

I did another run before crashing last night and my times were significantly better on all races than either Ballas's or maxh's times. I thought it was my best run ever as I smoked all of the first four races and still had enough nitro left to do decent on the fifth race. Was pretty excited and was ready to hit the F12 button to submit as this run had to at least be better than the 1,070,000 score I have submitted for the yearly contest where I didn't even win the fourth race. My final score was 1,010,000. I give up.

This game is simply a copy of Super/Championship Sprint only with 4x4 trucks. Not sure why they felt the need to make the scoring system so much different.

My thinking earlier today was: base start score (512,000) + nitro prizes (* quantity per grab) + cash bags (* quantity per grab) + cash for end position = total score.

I thought about the above today when away from RU and was unable to test it. I was sure I had it but unfortunately I've already proven it not to be true tonight after several tests.

I am still thinking that race times have no relevance. I tried all sorts of one race variations just like yours Barra, but never tracked the various race times completed. The result always ended with a score of 512,000 after the first race. Always.

I then ran a bunch of two race variations and always ended up with the same score of 576,000.

More data to follow this weekend...

Did a few tests and this seems correct.

After initials tests on races 1 and 2, the salary is almost definitely based solely on your finishing times versus the average (which is 99.99). I finished race 1 in both 56 and 74 seconds and still had 576000 after doing nothing on race 2.

Couple of tips:
1. Dont use turbos when you dont have to. You can finish the first 3 or even the 4th without using 1 turbo.
2. The CPU cars go fast when you do - at least in the first few races.
3. Purely speculative but each race time might be linked. Ie salary goes down if your race was slower than the previous. This would explain why it was going down from races 2-3
4. Upgrades, nitros, bonuses or leftover cash dont seem to have any effect on salary

I think the grey car upgrades when you do and the blue car always upgrades.

Complete guess, not based on any facts: Maybe your score is based on how you compare to the other racers. If the computer has a slower than normal avg time then your score goes up? Lapping the computer gives you more points?

The big question though is when and what upgrades should you purchase?

Test 2: repeat above, same results (512,000)

Test 3: repeat above, same results (512,000)

Test 7: run two laps, cower, no grab, same results (512,000)

Test 8: three laps, repeat above, same results (512,000)

Test 9: win race, no grab, then cower at start of second race - 100K race 1, 70k race 2 (576,000)

Test 10: win race 1, grabbed 1* nitro + 2* nito, cower race 2 - (576,000)

Test 11: win race 1, grabbed 10K money bag + 1* nitro + 2* nitro, cower race 2 (576,000)

Test 12: win race 1, grabbed 20K MB + 1*+2*+4*N, cower race 2 (576,000)

Test 13: win race 1, 1*N, bought top speed, cower race 2 (576,000)

Test 14: win race 1, 10K + 20K + 1*N + 3*N, cower race 2 (576,000)

Test 15: win race 1+2, cower race 3, N*4 + N*6, 30K + 1*N + 2*N + 3*N (460,000!)

Test 16: win race 1+2, cower race 3, 10K + 20K, 1*N + 2*N + 4*N + 20K (460,000!)

Tracking 17: 1*N + 10 + 20 + 30, 2*n + 20 + 40, race 3 no prizes, cower race 4 (622,000)

Tracking 18: 2*N, 1*N + 3*N + 20 + 30, 1*N + 10, cower race 4 (642,000)

3. Purely speculative but each race time might be linked. I.e. salary goes down if your race was slower than the previous. This would explain why it was going down from races 2-3

So I tried - just for kicks - to see if the reverse is true - i.e. get a deliberately slow time in race 1, and try and get progressively faster and see if you get rewarded for that.

I managed to come last (I think) in race 5 and I thought, balls, as I'm pretty sure all my 1m+ games i got to track 6...

Score: 1.121m. I just submitted it. So maybe there's something in it.

:bulgy-eyes:

Or maybe... just maybe... Occam's razor raises itself here - either this game has the most fiendishly opaque and complex scoring system ever (and after the end of the Golden Era with buy-ins and continues who gave a hoot about scores anymore?) or maybe we're all wasting our time :face:

I would imagine that few programmer (if any) in that era ever cared about scores or scoring, unless as you note it compels the user to invest more.

Especially true with this game... with three wheels on the front of the cab it was all about beating your friends and / or strangers in the here and now, rather than getting your name on the scoreboard... witness all the AAA's up there :D

Pretty sure these are facts.
The computer speed is based entirely on the speed of your previous race. There is a max.
Faster race time = higher score = faster competition in next race = harder game.
The race times of the computer drivers do not affect your score. Lapping the computer does not change your score.
Money (spent or collected), powerups, and nitros have no effect on your score or the computer drivers.

I suspect.
There is no difference in placing 2nd, 3rd or 4th.
Being lapped in the final race hurts your final time which hurts your score.
Some tracks give you more points than others.

TK2014 was banned for being a troll.
After being banned he asked for all of his scores to be deleted, they have been.
That caused a small change in the the leaderboard for this contest.
The biggest effect was the deletion of his first place in Metal Slug.
Which gave the other top players in Metal Slug a boost in overall points.

I agree with my friend cheetah, I 'd prefer a scoring system like 25, 15, 10, 7 etc. Or you can give points up to first 15 or 20 players.
Because now we have some big first scores in games like dragon's fury, pepper, metal slug and you see players within the ten, but receive a percent like 5% or 7% :\

The percent bonus weights some games slightly heavier than others. Dragon's Fury is the most extreme. I intended for a clear to give 10 extra points but the 200M end bonus causes the clear bonus to be around 100 instead. I think the 200M bonus shouldn't be counted when calculating the percent bonus.

The big point spread is mostly caused by it still being early in the year and only 3 people (First, Second and Fourth place) have submitted in all 14 games. TodayIsForgotten is in 3rd place even though he still has 3 zeros. Putting him in a good position for a run on first.

Not counting the 200M clear bonus in Dragon's Fury. Metal Slug would be the heaviest weighted game and Ironman would be the least.

If Player A was amazing in Metal Slug and sucked at Ironman and Player B sucked at Metal Slug but was amazing at Ironman then Player A would receive about 30 more points than Player B. That isn't very fair but it is only 30 points in a contest to reach around 2,000 and that is the most extreme example (not counting Dragon's Fury which is closer to 90 instead of 30 and I wouldn't be opposed to changing).

Kong

Comparing 459 to 209 is apples to oranges. The total possible points is also reduced. With percent bonuses your score is 78% of Max's. Without them your score is 80%. If you remove the Dragon's Fury Clear bonus then your score is 81% of Max's. That means with the exception of Dragon's Fury you are gaining more advantage from the percent bonus than Max is. Mostly because of your Metal Slug score.

The reason for a suggested special exception in Dragon's Fury is because it is different than all the other games. When you reach the final boss you will have about 30-50 Million points. If you beat the final boss you will have 230-250 Million points. That means clearing the game increases your score by nearly 87%. That is significantly different than all the other games and disrupts the original intention of the scoring system. We were not aware of this huge bonus when picking the games or creating the percent bonus.

That is a bug. Not sure why yet but I will fix it next week. Max noticed it last week.

This date bonus bug was fixed just now. The date bonus is not measured in months. It divides the year by 12 then rounds the date to the nearest whole number. It works out to where it decreases by one sometime around the 15th of each month.

The meaning "apples to oranges" needs explanation to me:)It is an English expression that means comparing two things that should not be directly compared.
Apples and oranges - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The point gap would be smaller without the bonuses but only because there would be fewer total points to go around. Moving up in rank would still be equally difficult no matter how we measure it. The bonuses have a fairly small effect on the rankings. With or without bonuses second place is about 10% away from first, third is about 15% from first and fourth is about 20%.

There's also a pepper 2 matter,
I recently made a 440,000 score but was deleted because there was a bug.

This is exactly why I don't like the percentage scoring system. In this case it's a bonus that's caused the problem but there is also the risk that someone comes along and just blows everyone's score away on a certain game. Not a big deal as this is all for fun but I'm thinking when all is said and done, you will recognize the weakness of this type of scoring and not use it again in the future. The CAG community has been all through this already which is why the Battle of the Arcades uses a straight point system. But this is probably one of those subjects you'll never get everyone to agree on.

I think the % system works when the games have a staggered release ie not all at the same time. You cant then pick and choose games with the biggest point differentials as you have no idea whats up next.
In this case, probably not the best, but its also not that bad as the competition is so long. Im sure plenty of other people could finish Dragon's Fury by the end of the year if they wanted to.

One thing that would help is to require a player to have submitted a score for all games before any of their scores count. This defends against someone who isn't even interested in the contest but really good at one of the games from ruining one of them.

And which are the games which have much influence from luck then?...

Any game with a random variable.

Any game with a random variable.

Pinballs are full of random variables:\

I just played a game to 26M. I had 9 extra balls at 22M. This was my first attempts at the later bonus rounds and I can say no one is going to clear those with luck. I failed on my last four attempts and I don't think I was close on any. I could see where with some practice it's doable but the game is pretty tedious in that it takes along time to get in a good run.

In pinball, luck has place, but the best player will be the champ.

The huge clear bonus in Dragon's Fury means clearing this one game gives you 100 points while all other games give you only 10 points for clearing. This is unbalanced and so I am making a special exception. For the purpose of calculating the Percent Bonus, if you clear Dragon's Fury you will have 180M points subtracted from your score. Take a look at Max's DF score for an example. Leaderboard (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&module=league&a=2014)

also the risk that someone comes along and just blows everyone's score away on a certain game.I see that as a pro, not a con. It rewards someone for blowing away the competition and encourages them to beat their own score. That is good.

The only problems - 1. games with large score gaps are weighted higher - not ideal but worth the trade off IMO. 2. The disruptive Dragon's Fury clear bonus which I removed.

For 200 mil, you need luck to get all those extras of 4 mil.And there is no way you will ever do that with luck. You must have skill.

Bad luck can cause you to lose a ball or two. Good luck alone will never give you a high score. The more skill you have the less likely luck will have any affect on your game.

180 mil is the finish bonus, not 200?
I was under the impression that you would repeal the percent for Dragon's Fury. You only repeal the finish bonus.
Small profit, just 20 points for me :)

And there is no way you will ever do that with luck. You must have skill.

Yes of course. But between players in the same skill, the luckier will beat the pinball game.

Bad luck can cause you to lose a ball or two. Good luck alone will never give you a high score. The more skill you have the less likely luck will have any affect on your game.

You dont need any special skill to control just 2 rackets.

So you lost all 9 extra balls(and the non extra?) within 4 million. Was it because you have no skill, or because you had bad luck?..

So you lost all 9 extra balls(and the non extra?) within 4 million. Was it because you have no skill, or because you had bad luck?..

Well, I'd like to think I have at least a little skill when it comes to pinball:dont-know: Part of it was not having any experience playing the higher level bonus levels and was taken by surprise a couple of times. Mostly it was I ran out of gas. I was up way past my usual crash time and just started playing really bad. Especially the last couple of balls. Yes, there were a couple of times I'd say I had some bad luck. Once my ball got stuck while I had the middle blocker up and was about to get to a bonus level. It just blew up. It did give me an extra ball but I lost all my progress.

The reason I'd argue pinball has little to no luck is that (this game is an exception) there are no moving parts except the ball and you are totally in control of where the ball goes. If you are shooting for a ramp and miss and the ball takes a bad bounce and you lose it. That's not bad luck, that you missing your shot. Pinball is all about controlling the ball and hitting your shots. If you don't do those things it might seem like bad luck but it's really just you sucking at pinball. Knowing when and how to use the nudge is also a huge part of the game so it's not all about just using two flippers.

Edit: I see by reading the quote that I didn't say what I meant. I had a total of 9 balls, not extra's. Sorry for the confusion.

Kong

The point reduction was somewhere between those dates.

It is not every month but rather every 1/12 of the year. So it does not change on the first of the month.

This innuendo of me being a cheat is becoming apparent. So, i will try my best to entertain your inquiries:

The average game in Monster Slider takes me 8-12 minutes. I spent nearly 2 hours today playing the game. I average in the 300s every game.

I use this philosophy a lot. If i have played one puzzle game I have played them all. They are all inherently the same thing, only with subtle twists. This also holds true for every genre of video game. This is my view and it hasn't failed me yet. This may not be the same for you or another person.

I will tip my hand to you, to help you better understand who Todayisfogotten, is. Since you seem to have a wire tap on me, you should know that i usually do not ever put forth my best game on this site and thus you may see my name appear quite a bit in short-bursts.

Man. I keep saying i want to avoid this thread because this reminds me of the xbox days. I can't help it. It's like a horrible accident. I have to look. You can't reason with this type of personality.

We get it hocus. Puzzle games might not be your forte. They certainly aren't mine, but i am half-way decent at them.

If mame has a slowdown function i never knew about it. Guess that debunks that claim.

As Barra mentioned, only i don't need to trust...MARP will 100% accept all my scores. I know what i can and cannot do.

Hocus, are you under the age of 18? Maybe its a language thing but you seem really immature and narcissistic. Since your 800k game is probably you spending double the time it took me to get to level 21 (this is my assumption). Reviewers are less likely to jump on that review. It's pure logic. The longer the game, the longer it usually takes to review.

Hocus. Just for you, i will honor one score for MARP. In my head i think it will shut you up, but it won't. Only, i am not going to waste my time submitting a puzzle game. Sorry. Pick wisely.

Barra

We dont allow leeching. Straight from the rules:

Do NOT abuse extra lives or extra continues. Anything that allows you to start an infinite or near infinite point loop or rewards you for playing badly is not accepted. If a game gives you an extra life every time you play a level, you may collect that extra life but you should only use it once. If you collect the same extra life multiple times then you would have lives remaining when you submit your score.

Do NOT Farm, Grind or Leech. Do NOT repeatedly kill the same respawning enemies or repeatedly collect the same respawning treasure without naturally progressing through the game. If the game has a limit such as a timer that would prevent you from doing this for very long then you may break this rule.

Your Nnja Kid score is being reviewed. You leeched within a timer. The leeching gave you extra lives. That is OK. But then you used those extra lives to leech again which gave you more lives. We are determining if there is a limit to how many lives you can gain from this or if an infinite loop is possible.

They are calling you TK because you are TK. You have been banned twice before. Learn from your mistakes and grow up.

Each time you were banned is for the exact same reason. You accuse someone of cheating for no other reason than they beat your score. Once you are proven wrong you continue to act like an immature spoiled brat who refuses to accept it is possible that you are wrong. You are dangerously close to getting your third ban and this time I will not just let you change your name and come back.

Stop accusing everyone that is better than you of being a cheater.

Donate a dollar and watch the videos. Not only is TIF not slowing the game down, he plays the game holding the fast forward button. He is playing at 1500% FPS for most of the game. I used his strategy and increased my score from 100K to 200K.

You make accusations with nothing to back them up. We have all of the security that WolfMAME has plus more. WolfMAME is easier to hack than our version.

I will await max's and cheetah's response (regarding TIF).

I'm guessing this was more a figure of speech rather than a request for a response, but if I bring any value at all, and as my name was dropped, I'll throw my hopefully constructive two cents in.

I watched TIF's Monster Slider score early this morning before going to sleep. Anyone who wants to watch may also do so as it is now linked under the "watch" link on the game page. His strategy is simple and any concerns anyone may have should be immediately dismissed once reviewing the run.

For those unable to watch, I'm sure the MARP score uses the identical strategy. While I'm not currently set up to review, play or submit on MARP and have not viewed a MS game there, I feel very comfortable stating that the strategy will be identical.

In short, Monster Slider is basically the Gunbarich of falling block games.

As for TIF, I've never once have had reason to question his integrity. I'm often amazed at some of the things he achieves and will eagerly watch those games that interest me to see his approach. While I'm hesitant to compliment him (as it goes straight to his head - I joke, I joke). His gaming abilities are significant.

TIF: if you don't already play in live competitions, you should if inclined (and I know you've stated several times that this sort of thing does not interest you). You would dominate.

TIF: Ninja kid is timed. So, he is ok for that score.

Unless an infinite loop is achieved, it's a point press IMO. I don't currently believe that an infinite loop is possible. I may change my mind on this view point down the road of course depending as to new strategies used but for now I don't see this game any differently than point pressing DK (other than the point press tally is much higher).

Metal Slug: it's hard to compare the point pressing on Metal Slug to Ninja Kid as there is no infinite loop question in Metal Slug.

To the best of my limited knowledge, to allow point pressing on both titles would be in line with typical adjudications.

Lastly, relating to how this thread turned towards the dark side on many fronts: making an effort to assume the best in any situation or person generally leads to the most beneficial result. It's not always easy to do. I'm often guilty of not following this advice. We all have common ground.

It takes a toll on my body when someone can match my game play and now i have to spend more repetitious time in a game that i know i can improve a score. Look at what innuendo did with aero fighters or rush n attack. Two skilled gamers battling (for me) is only fun for so long before it becomes more of a job. I hate work and unless this was the year 3000 where more casual gaming can make a comfortable salary - i give up rather easily until perhaps a way later date. At this point i have to spend more countless hours relearning and regaining feel for said game.

As for Ninja Kid. I forgot there are point breaks for extra lives. I think that could be infinite. It's every 30k i believe. There are several levels that come to mind where i could point press free lives over and over.

Oh boy. Hocus is going to have a field day with this. Obviously, you're cheating!

The lifes are NOT infinity.

TK is my friend. Thanks for compliment but dont try start a new troll war.
In fact, I believe tif "superman" and maxh is the same person.

Rest of answers later.

To be fair, that wasn't a compliment.

Hey nice score on Final Soldier BTW.
Was wondering when you (or someone else) would break the record for that game.

Thank you, Barra. Still a lot of room left with that score. Problem is, executing it.

Come on, you know what I m talking about. There are programs in which you can slow down the speed in online games.

Hocus. Just for you, i will honor one score for MARP. In my head i think it will shut you up, but it won't. Only, i am not going to waste my time submitting a puzzle game. Sorry. Pick wisely.

That statement wasn't clear. You said that you 'll make one score for marp or that you won't?

Your Nnja Kid score is being reviewed. You leeched within a timer. The leeching gave you extra lives. That is OK. But then you used those extra lives to leech again which gave you more lives. We are determining if there is a limit to how many lives you can gain from this or if an infinite loop is possible.

There comes a moment when you have no more lifes to spend.
I wonder, why there was no problem with my previous scores(506k, 543k) which were created in same way.

"Grow up"? Dont make me laugh, my friend. From what I know, you banned TK2014 because he protested for a cancelled game. You didn't discuss the matter, you just banned. That shows you were guilty.
The other time was because of a mod's mistake in tetris.
You should recognize your mistakes, instead of accuse the members.

You are dangerously close to getting your third ban and this time I will not just let you change your name and come back.

Try to understand that original TK cannot use another nicks. A same provider does not prove what you think.
But regardless of that, its funny to threat me with ban. Do I have something to lose? Cash maybe? Sounds like you make me some great favor.
Happens very often. Some admins/mods believe they are something like Gods and everybody plead for their mercy and compassion...

I don't accuse someone because... is better than me. Point is the fair competition.
As I said I watch any game I want in marp, no need to watch videos. I know that other players have an advantage because they can see any time my videos, thats ok.

How do you ask me to donate when you threat me for ban at the same time?!

Only 200k? You still need much work.

We have all of the security that WolfMAME has plus more. WolfMAME is easier to hack than our version.

Really? And how do you explain that I already used autofire in a submitted score?
There are games, like Double Dragon NeoGeo in which apparently the top scores are created by autofire, maybe yours too.

Lol, of course. But can you explain us something?
In 10:09 you made 314k.
In 10:12 you made 354k !......

You are not in a position to judge that.

FINAL CONCLUSION
I joined here exclusively for the 2014 Contest. I played no other games.
I showed you how to make really big scores in Ivan Ironman.
I showed you how to leech in Metal Slug.
I showed you how to leech in Ninja Kid 2.
After 1 month of many playing hours and hi skill I had 1960 points and 2nd place. The 1st place was a matter of time. And then... we had site's reaction. They throw some score bot player named tif, or 'superman' as Barra call him. And he destroyed everything!
450 points in a couple of days, many superb scores at once...

After these, first place is taken by that superman. You have declared him already as the great champion. The rest of us, like supporting actors, we just have to narrow our goal, only second place is available.

So its pointless to continue my participation in this competition.
I asked tif to make 2 mil for marp, because we all know he can't.
I' ll continue competition only if he upload a big mslider's score in marp.
Now. Not after 3 months.

Why the hell would i bother doing that? I don't know of such lag creating programs. Furthermore, explain to me how it's possible when the client is downloaded locally to the users computer? How am i going to lag the connection? What, am i going to load up fraps on the hard drive that runs my operating system and record 60fps in hopes that my ssd will not be able to keep up and slow the game speed to 1/4 speed? Give me a break man. I have better things to do.

I said i will honor one game. You pick and its not going to be monster slider. I could even do a twitch session. You can choose the games to your hearts content.

I am not judging. I am thinking logically. They are calling you TK because there is strong belief that you are. Kong is confirming that you are. As the site owner and ip addresses and all that jazz - it's pretty easy to determine who is who.

Anyhow, TK complained in a similar fashion as you, thus them calling you TK. They are not calling you TK because he was good at metal slug or whatever else game.

Look around. I've been here for awhile. I didn't come out of nowhere.

Also, you didn't show me how to leech in any game. I know the leech points in MS and if i don't i can find youtube videos aside from TK doing it. Any game with timer is pretty easy to figure out how to leech. If you assume that you brought light to leeching...perhaps.

haha well man. I guess you should pack your bags. I'm not uploading a 2 mil score for you. Only you. No one else has this issue. Only you.

It was a general question.

It will take you just a few minutes.
I want only mslider.

My friend... Any time you restart your router you get a new IP.

Look around. I've been here for awhile. I didn't come out of nowhere.

My opinion is that you re obviously a score bot.

Also, you didn't show me how to leech in any game.......

My "you" was not for you exclusively. For all participants.

If you knew that leeching method in ninja kid you would get your 580k points from the 3rd stage as I did, not from the 900th stage...

No. You implied it. A few minutes? It took me 2 hours to get 2 million. Why would i want to play the game for 2 hours or more to appease you? If i could constantly get that score i would put this to rest, but you'd probably find something else to knit-pick me about, right? I think i am right there.

I think you are confusing a router with a modem. Anytime you restart your router, depending on if you have DHCP or a Static IP addressed via the router or node and assuming that there are multiple nodes on the network, there is a possibility you'll get a different IP. But, only on the Local Area Network - not globally. Most likely you're using one of the three Classs A B or C private addresses, which still would then be sent out through PAT/NAT(on the router) to your modem. The modem uses an 'outside global' address. In others words a route able IP. Your private addresses cannot be reached from the outside and thus are 'inside local.'

If your modem is reset and you aren't paying for Static IPs then yes, there is an excellent chance you will be on a different IP, but lets assume that you aren't TK. What if you both have different ISPs. A very likely scenario. In which case each ISP has its own specific block of IPs, still distinguishing who is who. You can do look up in ARIN to see who owns the registered blocks.

Then I am a score bot. I must be the best AI ever created.

Ok, 2 hours is a big period for a master like you. Spend them here, making posts in forum...

Ok, forget these things about modem-routers, apparently you re not familiar.
Just note that its easy for someone to change his IP if he wants it.

No different than what you are doing, really. I'm spending them here, because this is entertaining me.

Regardless of how easy it is or isn't. Its your modem that determines when your IP changes. Whether you are logging into and doing it via software, or disconnecting it and reconnecting it. It also depends on how the ISP renews IPs.. I'm quite familiar.

Look man. It's not happening. I am not uploading monster slider to Marp. I just dont get why you are so hellbent on thinking 2 million isn't possible when 1.5 is the current score on marp. 500k is not that far off.

What you're saying is the Marp record is unbeatable. Interesting.
