Cosmo Gang for the shooter. Galaga fans will like it. Risk reward players will like it. And it has powerups.

How is Super Bishi Bashi a puzzle game?
Isn't Risky challenge pretty similar to New Zealand story?
Isn't Binary Land more of a puzzle game? The objective is to meet both characters together through some sort of maze.

I suggest:
Toypop
The Amazing Maze game

How is Super Bishi Bashi a puzzle game?
It wasn't supposed to be in there. Deleted.

Isn't Risky challenge pretty similar to New Zealand story?Not at all. I think you are thinking of Risky Woods - Sega Genesis (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/3307/)

It has a lot more puzzle to it than a typical Tetris clone though. Might should be replaced with something more standard like Monster Slider (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/8037/) or Star Sweep - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6373/)

Isn't Binary Land more of a puzzle game? I think it fits in the same category as Pac Man. Navigate a maze collecting items while baddies chase you.

For Binary Land you only need to collect keys and similar stuff. You're really just trying to guide the navis to the heart. Also, the enemies are pretty static most of the time, like all of the spiders.

How about adding Tower of Druaga - Coin-Op?

I second Stocker for a racing game but Wonder Boy came out in 86 and I'd really like to see a game from the Golden Age. How about Satan's Hollow - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6223/). Dig Dug or Xevious would also be cool picks. RU has many versions of these two games. More options would be Gorf, Galaxian, DK, Robotron, Joust, Defender, Asteroids Deluxe, Time Pilot, Space Invaders, Galaga. So many cool games from that era to chose from.

Sports games are more difficult to come up with a good one for competition purposes but I'll try and come up with a suggestion.

For speed run, are you looking for something with an in game counter or just something that can be cleared and the ref will count frames?

---------- Post added at 02:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:55 PM ----------

Here's a sports game that at least has a scoring system other than biggest blowout. 10 Yard Fight - Arcade/Coin-Op - Score Board (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6686/scores/). I've never played this game before but I have heard of it.

Speed Run. We will use the emulation time from Game Load to F12 Submission.

Should be a game that can be cleared in one session. Ideally around 30-60 minutes but that is flexible. Should offer a wide range run time depending on skills. Ideally most people can clear it but only a master can clear it fast.

Sports. I think a fast action team ball game would be best, such as Football, Soccer, Basketball. Ideally the score system is not the spread and the range of scores is great. Most sports games such as NBA Jam have a poor score system for competition.

Tecmo Super Bowl is biggest blowout score but I think it should be changed to total score or total yardage over a season. That would mean deleting existing scores, enabling SRAM and would make it a very long game. Would probably be 20 hours to submit one score.

Both of these are sport-like and have a real score systems. I think they are the best suggestions so far.
Blockbuster Competition 2: NBA Jam And Judge Dredd - Sega Genesis (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6733/)
Heavy Smash: Future Sports - Arcade/Coin-Op - Score Board (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7971/scores/)

Run n Jump - I'm leaning towards Whizz - Super Nintendo (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/4572/) or Ninja Kid 2 - Arcade/Coin-Op (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5882/)

Racing and Golden Age Arcade - You guys are on your own. Try to come to a consensus together. If there is no consensus then on Xmas day I will let the leaders of the 2013 contest choose games for these 2 categories. The Micro Machine games wont work. Poor score system.

I suggest Tecmo Bowl instead. I've beaten it myself multiple times (actually every system) and it takes about 3 hours.

Tails you missed my point.

I was suggesting TSB for sports category, not Speed Run.

TSB scores are currently biggest blowout. I suggest we change it to most total score. I don't know about all versions but in at least Genesis that is across 3 seasons. It makes for a much more accurate score system but also an intensely long game. 3 seasons is probably over 50 hours. Too long for this contest. If one of the other ports is only one season then it might work for this.

What I mean is, to fully beat the "game/season" (there is only 1) it takes roughly 3 hours. Not saying speed run as speed run doesn't really matter here.

Personally I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES should be used as the speed run game. It's extremely challenging but well rewarded if you can beat it. It takes patience and understanding of the levels and their layout. No one, I repeat no one will beat it on their first try.

But as a challenging side scroller it is a lot of fun to blast your way through and beat the game.

TMNT for NES is definitely not suited for speed running. It has a ton of randomization, including enemy spawns and item pickups. The worst part is the Technodrome boss, which has a random chance of appearing in one of several different locations in level 5. If it doesn't appear, you waste several minutes going somewhere else and hope it spawns there.

Options/suggestions:

Pinball:
1 - Alien Crush (seems better than Crue Ball);
2 - skip this genre (usually very long games! Or why not limit pinball games, like 1 hour or 1,5 hours maximum? Is it possible?);
3 - Crue Ball.

Sports:
1 - skip this genre (usually sports games have many random factors, or possibility to find easy patterns to repeat at get many "scores" in many games. Console sports games usually are very long games);
2 - Battle Flip Shot (Arcade);
3 - California Games (Genesis) (modes? all? scores?).

Run'N Jump:
1 - Magical Crystals (Arcade);
2 - Kid Chameleon (Genesis);
3 - Chiki Chiki Boys (Arcade).

Beat'em Ups:
1 - Battletoads (NES? Genesis?) (if ok, for speedrun);
2 - many Konami or Capcom games;
3 - Undercover Cops (Arcade).

Adventure:
1 - Flashback (Genesis) (don't know if the scoresystem is good).

Golden Era:
1 - I, Robot (Arcade) (don't allow warps);
2 - Ripoff (Arcade);
3 - Speed Coin (Arcade);
4 - Anteater (Arcade);
5 - Pole Position II (Arcade) (1st track)
6 - Zektor (Arcade);
7 - Robotron (Arcade).

Racing:
1 - Power Drift (Arcade);
2 - Pole Position II (Arcade) (1st track... It's for permafrostrick :) );
3 - Super Off Road (Arcade? MasterSystem?) (loops limit? 2 loops?).

Speedruns:
1 - Pitfall (Atari2600);
2 - Aero Fighters (SNES) (Time Attack, secret mode accessed by code);
3 - Adventure (Atari2600);
4 - Pitfall II (Arcade);
5 - Battletoads (NES? Genesis?) (if ok);
6 - The Lion King (Genesis? SNES?);
7 - Ghost'n Goblins (Arcade) (1 loop? 2 loops?).

Shmups w/ short time:
1 - Aero Fighters (SNES) (Time Attack, secret mode accessed by code);

Falling Blocks:
1 - Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Arcade);

These seems ok:
Paddle (Break Out) = Gunbarich - Arcade/Coin-Op
Fixed Shooter (Galaga) = Cosmo Gang the Video - Arcade/Coin-Op
Vs. Fighter (Street Fighter) = Double Dragon: Neo Geo - Arcade/Coin-Op

I'd avoid:
- Games that are Language dependent, like many RPGs and Quiz And Dragons.
- Long games;
- Lucky factor games.

2 - Kid Chameleon (Genesis);
Was in last year's contest.

1 - Flashback (Genesis) (don't know if the scoresystem is good).Score system is good. The controls take a while to learn. Doesn't have the "arcade" feel of just pick up and instantly start playing.

3 - Speed Coin (Arcade);Speed Coin has been in at least one contest before. Maybe more than one. Several players don't want to see it again.

1 - Aero Fighters (SNES) (Time Attack, secret mode accessed by code);I prefer to stay away from anything that requires a code.

1 - Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Arcade);
Was in last year's contest as well as a couple others.

That Final Soldier seems very good, despite doesn't show the time spent in the end, right? A similar game, with a xx'xx"xxx in the end, would be perfect.

Quickly "voting":
- Beatemup: Undercovercops (2nd vote for Cad & Dino)
- VS: I'd prefer a SF game, but Double Dragon seems good for competition. So: 1st vote=DD, 2nd: SFEX (if it currently runs fine to everyone).
- Adv: Flashback.
Metal Slug is very good, but I think the fans of the game can crush the scores quickly (many secrets), not sure if it's good or bad for a year long competition.
See you!

Undercover Cops is a great solid game.
Shadow Force is a really interesting beat em up. It is Technos' (the company that invented the genre) final arcade game. It has 6 buttons (way more than any other similar game), a bunch of combos and special moves and you can morph into any enemy and use their abilities. I haven't played it enough to know if it is a solid game but that description sounds cool.
I have only played Battle Circuit for a few minutes but it looks really awesome.
Caddies and Dinos is hugely popular but I'm not a fan.

I don't think we can go wrong with any of those choices.

I am leaning towards throwing Flashback in but I'm nervous that it will be a mistake. If you are very anti-Flashback now is the time to say so.

I vote for Arkista's Ring. Had a hell of a lot of fun when I was playing it, although I never did beat it. (I think I was playing it in Full Mode last year or so). I replayed all the games but Arkista's is still most fun to me.

Gets my vote too because it looks the most simple to play out of the three choices.

As for beat em up I trust TRB's opinion - he knows this genre very well.

Flashback would be a mistake. As the person who nominated Arkista's Ring in the first place my vote is obvious.

The SF EX series is too easy. I can get to the final boss on all of them with just button mashing while watching tv.

Replacing with Double Dragon Neo Geo. (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7885/)
