When you were first scared from a movie

I remember the first time I was traumatized by a film. The movie was called "Pieces", it involved chainsaws lopping off limbs, and butcher knives going through doors then through the back of skulls and out mouths... I was way too young to see it.

The original Star Wars films were some of the first movies I watched; I was probably around four years old and relatives would often put in a vcr of it while I caught a nap or went to bed.

I saw most of them this past summer and laughed at most of them. Did not find them scary. I found it funny how no one could ever seem to hit him. Speaking of Chuckie, isn't a new one coming out soon?

I remember not being scared at this one movie, but my grandma kept reminding me "You know it's just a movie, right dear?"

The only scene I remember was a birds eye view looking into a silo with a man in there, then suddenly the silo started filling up with corn, it buried the man until only one arm was uncovered, it just looked like a severed lower arm sitting on top of the corn, only with no blood. I think he was holding a flashlight. That's literally all I remember, anyone have any ideas of what movie this was?

You know what? Im having a bit of trouble remembering a movie from back in the day myself! I know its a cult classic and EVERYONE must have seen it a while back. 2 scenes I do remember is 1. Its storming outside and a boy is upstairs in his room, He's under his bed and the window explodes due to wind or somthing, He looks at his hand and theres an eyeball in his palm in which he proceeds to stab the eyeball with a piece of glass from the window. 2. Is when he runs downstairs and their is a Grey Monster after him, the monster falls down the stairs and when he hits the ground he busts into like a 100 miniature monsters of the same kind....freaked me oput too as a kid,

I feel the same way about horror films. Gore was never something
that bothered me and you often see the deaths way before they
happen. A horror film that did entertain me was the original
Aliens, it gave me a few jumps, but it didn't exactly scare me.

The main problem is they are always in your face with the scares,
so you can always see it coming, horror requires subtly and
setting to evoke these feelings of terror. Even then, I never get
scared by the few good ones that entertain me.

It's more of a psychological thing, but let's just say that the ending is freakily, freakily eerie are conceptually nightmarish. It's not like a normal kind of scare, but I was pretty disturbed.

I clearly don't remember which scary movie that scared that hell out of me . My mother use to rent lots of them at Blockbuster long time ago. I remembered Friday the 13,Creepshow,Child Play and bunch of others None of them gave me nightmares I never knew such thing could happen.They're good to watch !

BTW If anyone ever seen World War Z in Theater last summer you know that was a good movie but it was fun watching a little boy between the age of 8-10 in a chair in front of me being creeped out to death over a bunch of scenes and of course most part with the zombies. He had the blanket in front of him as he covered most of his face other then his eyes .His family was trying to comfort him telling his it's okay. But as I was smiling and laughing in the dark his dad notice me leaning toward the chair to be amused by his son. He stared at me in 40 secs as I was trying to act like I wasn't looking You just gotta know that was his scariest moment watching a movie he was better off watching Monster University lmao!

I do agree to that, but after skimming tails video, I didn't even see anything that seemed like it was supposed to be scary.

For me it was The Fog and Salems Lot. They're actually still quite scary now so as a young boy I was bloody terrified!

{the really creepy part is that they actually conducted experiments such as the one the movie is based on - now that's scary!}

It makes me think of the Hellraiser series; they seem more shocking than scary - the only one that came close for me was Hellraiser: Bloodline, because of Angelique, the Demon inside a woman's skin:

I think I understand what you guys are saying, and I think it's safe to say it's probably the same for most people; watching 'scary' movies is like a ride on a rollercoaster in that it's a thrill, but no matter what you can pretty much count on it being safe.
Maybe 3D TV will change all that?

JIG, SC13, I liked The Gate too, and you have to give them credit for playing on the nonsense stories circulating {by word of mouth in the dark ages before internet} regarding 'Satanic messages' in Heavy Metal music >:D, heard only when you play the record backwards.

{thus destroying your needle in the process, by the way - religious people must have gone through a lot of record needles back in the 80's}.

On a side note:

The fear put into people during the 80's by their respective churches of such things as the 'backwards Satanic messages' shown in the movie reached comical proportions.

I remember one girl sitting next to me on the bus one day tell me how proud she was to have taken a 'Motley Crue' cassette tape someone had put on at a party and thrown it out into a snowbank - because she believed she was 'doing God's work' ,saving the people there from 'Satan's power'.

Then she went on to tell me that when they got upset over what she'd done, it only proved she was right, that they were under 'Satan's power'.

I hope you didn't think I was putting it down; as a first - person account of Government testing L.S.D. on active Soldiers during the Vietnam war it is an exceptional film.

That's what I meant when I said it can make the audience feel like they're going insane - they seem to have captured what it may be like to experience such a thing = and as I said before, the whole thing is based on real experimentation that was actually done to unsuspecting 'test subjects' {victims}.

The pile of little arms you see for an instant during the scene where they're wheeling him in for the operation {by the surgeon with no eyes, might I add} ..

I always thought that was an indirect tribute to the speech Colonel Kurtz gave in the original Apocalypse Now,

Apocalypse Now is another superbly dark film.

These aren't the kinds of films you want to watch to put you in a cheery mood though ;)

I would have to say Night of the Living Dead, the black & white version from 1968 (I know this is showing my age). There was something about it that messed me up. I don't think I really watched much scary movies after that until Nightmare on Elm Street. That was alright but when I saw either Hellraiser 1 or 2, it took a few days to come down from that.

It's funny, I was just scrolling this thread and my daughter (almost 4) was looking over my shoulder and I scrolled past the blue guy DB posted above and she DID NOT LIKE IT.

She's a real wuss, but its interesting to see a new generation getting scared in real time.

I feel like I'm definitely missing whatever the first one actually was and I really didn't catch a lot of scary films until I was 12/13. (About the time I joined these forums apparently). Anyways I remember distinctly being bothered by a lot. Namely House on Haunted Hill. A really odd choice and I'm positive it wasn't thr first once again. Most notably what bothered me was when the security guard was found dead with his head caved in, and yet he got up and walked off camera, alluding to the fact that he'd be heading for the survivors (though I don't think he actually did?). Anyways that stands out.

It would be interesting to see the movie almost 10 years later now, to see how cheesy it probably is.

Games scared me more. I couldn't play Half Life without god mode on for years due to an intense fear of dying in game. Doom broke me out of this at around 14 when I oddly played a hacked version for the dreamcast when I was 14. I actually kind of miss the fear. In these kinds of games now it feels like there's no fear of death in game at all anymore. Except in hardcore 1 death games which I've also conquered with minecraft at least a few times.

It's not a movie and it's not really even scary but the recent episode of The Walking Dead actually disturbed me. I knew what was coming, mostly, but it still left me unsettled.
I wasn't unsettled by Abe and Glenn getting a bat to the skull, it's just violence, I was bothered by the scene where Negan pretended to make Rick cut off his sons arm. Big props to Andrew Lincoln for the acting in that scene. It was tense and he really nailed it. It was especially good for me because I usually don't think he's that great of an actor.

That being said I wasn't sure if it even needed a spoiler at this point since the book has been out for years and the show covered it like two seasons ago.
