Does it piss off anyone else, that all these companies with lots of successful titles under their belts are using Kickstarter?
Whats next? Doritos needs funding to develop a new flavor?

you mean wayforward?
It's not just them, Inafune's project shouldn't be a kick starter, either... I'm not about to go through the list and say who should and should'nt be using it, but Spike Lee used it for his latest film. There is a problem.

Putting projects on Kickstarter sidesteps giving an external funder control of your product, and gives the product to an audience that is willing to pay for it, instead of putting it out on the market (and all the risks associated with it) and hoping that it sells.

And that's wrong, it's supposed to be about giving the little guy a "kickstart".

So which part is "wrong" about it?
Is it wrong to use Kickstarter to allow developers to create the game they want instead of the game big publishing houses like EA and Activision want?
Perhaps Kickstarter is also about "kickstarting" a project that otherwise publishing houses wouldn't want to touch or would try to turn into another generic, by-the-numbers, cookie cutter?

.This project is on Kickstarter so it can involve YOU, the fans! Not only will this make it possible, through crowdfunding, for us to make the game exactly as we envision it, but it also allows us to bring dedicated fans of this genre together to assist the team in shaping aspects of the game’s design. We need your help! Let’s make something amazing, and let’s do it together!
Over the last 23 years WayForward has developed more than 200 licensed titles, our most recent being Ducktales: Remastered. When circumstances permit, we also make weird and wonderful original games like Shantae and the Mighty Series.
In all that time, fan letters, support emails and interviewers have made our most frequently asked question, “Why don't you guys make more original games?”
Kickstarter allows us to do just that! With your help we can create a large-scale multi-console game that's well beyond our usual self-publishing budgets.
i don't have a problem with companies using kickstarter i think it is great cause the games will be greater with a larger budget to work with it and not like the people funding don't get stuff in return they get the game and if the spend enough they might even help with the making of the game.

One thing I dislike about Kickstarter is the stretch goals. I get why they are needed but I hate when I hear that a cool feature didn't get added because they were short some donations. If it's gonna make your game awesome and generate more money it only makes sense to add it. Leaving it out makes me feel like we're getting an incomplete game.

It's the digital age, anybody can put any game on a multitude of platforms on their own.
Kickstarter was originally supposed to be for someone trying to start something. I remember when it first started I donated 25 bucks to some dude trying to start a business selling his Christmas cards...
Now we are about halfway down the path to funding the new Mountain Dew flavour.
Their are companies using their established name to take advantage of people, they are just thinking "hey, free money". While taking donations away from people who are just trying to get a foot in the door.
Does anyone else understand what I am trying to say?

I don't get it.
A kickstarter project is only successful if people fund it. If a new flavor of Mountain Dew was funded, then it was through the choice of people. I'm willing to bet that flavor would have come out anyways and didn't even need support, so in this case I would say the backers made a dumb choice. Dew wouldn't be doing any harm to other Kickstarter projects, they would be doing harm to people who do stupid things with their money.
If what you're saying is that these kinds of games could have been made anyways, then look at it this way: If you back the project by as much as the game will cost not only to you help fund additional work to be done on it, but you'll also get a copy of the game when it comes out. Essentially it's no different from buying the game other than the fact that some of the proceeds go towards making the game better.
Honestly though I did not expect this to be your complaint. I thought for sure you would be bothered by the fact that Kickstart projects can potentially fall through or not return on the project at all.

This summerizes my issue:
"There is currently a highly successful Kickstarter live to fund a new Indie-movie by Zach Braff of Garden State fame. The Kickstarter smashed through its 2 Million Dollar goal in less than 3 days.
Zach Braff has a huge fan-following, served an incredibly well-made Kickstarter video and is now reaping the Kickstarter rewards.
Zach Braff, however, is also a multi-millionaire. Moreover, he already had a “traditional” financing deal for his movie from a studio, which he turned down in favour of doing a Kickstarter-campaign."
Basically, it's starting to go down the path that big companies will have no need for overhead, since the will no longer have development costs.
On the other hand, yes if you do get a copy of the game/movie/product with your donation, then yeah cutting out the middle man is fine I suppose. I don't know, maybe it's a better business model in the grand scheme of things.
I guess the only thing that doesn't sit well with me is that it should be there to help the little guy, and it seems to be getting further and further away from that. Eventually it will come full circle, and there will be a need for a new Kickstarter, since the original one will be just big companies.
Mountain Dew would receive 100 times the donations that some little guy just trying to get a bottle of juice on the shelf would get.

While I agree with what you're saying, the issue isn't people and companies taking advantage of this, but the fact that people are still backing stuff when this happens.
Don't blame the game, blame the players. (in this instance)

@Steven: But its not really taking away from the smaller projects. It's not like people are saying; "I have this $20 I plan on spending on a kickstarter today. I was going to back this smaller project that needs funding but instead I'll drop it on this campaign that's already 200% funded."
I don't think these larger campaigns are detracting funds from smaller projects but instead introducing more and more people to kickstarter. In essence, "larger games" (honestly Shantae and Inafune aren't household names even when that household is a gaming household) are bringing more traffic and thus more potential funders to the smaller projects.
The people who benefit from kickstarter campaigns are developers and gamers, not publishers. You out of anyone I think should be able to appreciate that.

River City Ransom has added in stretch goals:
$205K - Apple® Mac™ and Linux™
With the recent announcement of SteamOS, Linux is even more of an interesting choice for developers. And of course, we can't ignore the many folks who love their Macs. Our game library is well traveled in the *nix space, so we are confident in our ability to deliver this stretch goal.
$280K - Sony® PS4™ and PlayStation®Vita
Our original goal remains unchanged. The technical complexity for this goal is higher, but the effort involved paves the way for future platforms.
$320K - Nintendo® WiiU™ and 3DS™
Our initial talks with Nintendo have been encouraging, and we have heard from many vocal and passionate fans of the platform. We have said that River City Ransom: Underground belongs on Nintendo, and with the right resources, we can make it happen.
$360K - Microsoft® Xbox One™
Based on Microsoft's new Independent Developers Publishing Program, and the foundations laid in previous stretch goals, it looks like clear sailing to reach fans on this platform at this level.
$390K - Sony® PS3™
The current generation PlayStation 3 is a platform in its own right, and we don't want to ignore it. This level will give us confidence to ship on this console as well.

I guess that comes with being insane.
I got a kitten, named it Mew, and accidentally killed it the first night I had it. I was stoned, and it woke me up somehow. I got angry and put it in a big plastic bucket in the closet, half asleep and confused. In the morning, it was dead- it had suffocated. I panicked and told my roommate I had stepped on it. I felt absolutely horrible about it and pushed it out of my mind, trying to forget what a monster I was. It shoved me further into a haze.

I saw the trailer for Under the Dog but I thought it looked too actiony and familiar. If it does end up being gud I might regret it.

@SH- When I was at Otakon, they actually had a kickstarter panel there. Was pretty interesting. Not sure if it'll really be that good though.

Looking very promising for UTD. Less than 7k needed with 64 hours to go.

Updated T.O.S. says:
"When a creator posts a project on Kickstarter, they’re inviting other people to form a contract with them. Anyone who backs a project is accepting the creator’s offer, and forming that contract...the contract is a direct legal agreement between creators and their backers.
The creator is solely responsible for fulfilling the promises made in their project. If they’re unable to satisfy the terms of this agreement, they may be subject to legal action by backers"

It's a pretty crappy world when people are willing to sue for the $10 they gave for a game that they don't think is good enough, the term "good enough" being nebulous and completely subjective.

That sounds like legalese, in other words "we aren't responsible go sue the creators!". I doubt anyone will actually pursue it unless they lose a ton of money.

I don't think it's about delivering quality content, I think it's about delivering period.
Like that Double Fine guy who got like 8 million and blew through it, and said... uhhh we need more money -That's ridiculous. I don't know of any stories first hand since I don't even know if I've ever visited the site, but I know I've read that creators getting their money, and then magically lose interest in the project was an issue.

And speaking of new content...
YOUR “VOICE” HAS BEEN HEARD!
We’ve been seeing great discussions all over our forums, twitter feed and Facebook for the past week, all focused on a single burning question: English or Japanese? Which language will all the voice acting be in for Mighty No. 9?!
The response has been amazing: over 20,000 of you weighed in with your choice over the last few days, and now we’re finally back with your decision:
Mighty No. 9 will include English voice acting!
You might be thinking “Well DUH! Of course it’s English -- the largest majority of Mighty No. 9 backers speak English!” And sure, you’d be right, but you’d be surprised how close the vote was -- less than 1,000 votes separated the two choices, from the start right down to the end!
So a HUGE thanks to ALL of you for helping us make Mighty No. 9 a better game, with special thanks to our slacker backers and beckers who upped their reward tiers, since it’s their purchases that will make this bonus content possible and guarantees it for all our backers! You guys & gals are the best! ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ
And for anyone else still considering slacker backing, keep an eye out for our next extra bonus content possibility! We’ll have more details soon...speaking of which...

Well, at least Shovel Knight payed off.
I'm not terribly upset by MN9 as I only put in $20 and it at least looks like it's well on it's way to be released.
Shantae does kind of worry me a bit as they seem ambiguous with how much they actually have completed, and it might get rough on them to stretch their deadline.
Everything else, I'm not so worried about.
Backed projects:
Shovel Knight
River City Ransom: Underground
Hyper Light Drifter
Shantae: Half Genie Hero
Mighty Number 9
La-Mulana 2
SUPERHOT

Kickstarter for a blood donation service integrated with video games. I actually don't know how I feel about this, but I thought it was at least interesting.
They don't seem to have any dedicated programmer, which seems unfortunate to me. Seems there have been more than a few projects that have fallen apart because of that kind of thing.

Directed by Hifumi Kono, the creator of the revolutionary Clock Tower series with creature design by Pyramid Head designer Masahiro Ito, NightCry is a point-and-click horror adventure where darkness is always stalking you.
A supernatural creature is stalking the guests of a cruise ship with incredibly large scissors, and your only hope is to run! With no weapons at your disposal, escape and subterfuge are your only tools to stay alive.
There's a little over 48 hours left in the NightCry Kickstarter, so be sure to head over before the campaign ends:

SUPERHOT Alpha Gameplay - Endless Mode - YouTube
Supe Hot is coming along really well. I backed it about 8 months after every other project I backed, and it already looks like it will come out before all of those other games.
Also, I played a little bit more Shovel Knight. Still a friggin awesome game, even after the hype has died down and I've become familiar with all the levels. Seems like the additional content is coming really slow though.

Not on kickstarter, and not a game. But given the decline of bees worldwide and the related environmental effects, I feel this is noteworthy...

Commentary on kickstarter:
Just Kidding: This Game May Break the Kickstarter Record | WIRED (http://www.wired.com/2015/05/bloodstained-kickstarter/)
There is now a meta game of acheivements on campaigns........wow.
I have a feeling Kickstarter games funding is running into the same problem as the traditional games industry - big names are dominating the attention. Having to hire a company to run a campaign is bringing costs way up. Smaller teams will be squeezed and shut out when they can't afford the costs of just having a Kickstarter campaign.
It's surprising how Kickstarter gaming changed by the entry of big money and big players. It is quickly becoming a main source of funding rather than an option of last resort.
