Monies is always good reason.

They're trying to gain sales with this cheaper version ($30 I think) while at the same time, avoiding cutting their own profit on the standard model further.

Seems like its for kids. But I don't really understand it since you can just turn the 3D off anyway...

Who wants to guuss this will flop like the Micro did?

Great job on the naming as usual Nintendo.

"Where are the Nintendo 2DS games? I see 3DS games, but....???"

Should have just called it 3DS Basic or something similar.

Now all we need to do is wait for the Wii U version that doesn't require that screen-controller and can just use a Wii mote. They could have a tagline like: "You are the controller." and call it the Wii UR.

Tails

Maybe you should patient that. :P

At least they had the sense to release this alongside Pokemon X and Y. That alone may sell 2DS systems. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the 2DS become popular among broke college students.

It's true that nobody can do anything is this industry without a ton of criticism. I think it's nice that they released a model just for the little tykes. There are a lot of parents who would prefer their kids under 7 have this model, this is the one I would buy if I had a kid in the age range.

Anyway you look at it, it's not a bad thing, worst you can say is that it is useless to you.

Edit: inb4 Nintendrone

Just to even it out, Reggie talking about how the digital version of Hyrule Historia,(that comes packed in with the Wiiu/Wind Waker bundle) is supirior to the hard copy, was completely asinine. Is it sad I felt compelled to add that in?

Literally went right to my email from this page, got this from my sister:
"there is a new 2ds being released. I'll probably get that cause it will be cheap."

no hinges cant put in pocket/10

CrispyChicken

The fact you can't fold it/has no hinges makes it a no buy from me. I could see small kids playing this though which makes sense. Little kids really wouldn't need to put it in their pockets because its not like they go out much lol. Most of the time playing their 2DS would probably be at home.

The only reason it exists is to offer a lower price point by removing a key but expensive feature.

2DS = $129.99
3DS = $169.99
3DS XL = $199.99

I think the name and concept are good.

2 Problems - not pocket size. Marketing is misleading. They are advertising it as if they are offering some new and improved gadget. They are not. They need to be up front, this is ONLY for the very narrow market of people that can spend $130 but not $170.

And children ages 5-7, it's no coincidence that it's launching the same day as the new Pokemon X/Y.

Why would kids prefer 2d over 3d?

Bentley

This is a strategy to sell more systems in the Pokemon day launch, and maybe to be more foward towards making games that use the 2DS as a controller (no bending means a more controllerish form). Pretty smart from Nintendo, even if it could still use a slight prize drop.

I did laugh when I heard the name though :p

Nintendo recommends children 6 and under not use the 3D function.

If I didn't find Steve to be so sharp about it, I'd be up voting his posts. He's pretty right on the money when he says it's mostly being marketed to children; it's what all the ads indicate, as well.

I think it's mostly intended to appeal to parents of kids who may want a 3DS.

1. The price knock from $170 to $130 is probably to compete with some of Apple's mobile products. Getting your kid a new 2DS would feel cheaper than getting them some versions of the iPod Touch, which can go for about $175-180 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=892576&is=REG&Q=&A=details).

2. Kids have smaller clothing. Even folded up, I'm not sure they can just tuck the 3DS into their pockets.

3. Compared to the DS and 3DS, the 2DS seems more unbreakable. With the right amount of pressure, the foldable models probably wouldn't be all that hard to snap in half.

4. This is a really weak point, but it'd be harder to lose a 2DS, given its size.

Why would kids prefer 2d over 3d?

Like Tails mentioned, any parents that heard that the 3ds could mess up their kids eyes, more than likely put the kibosh on the idea of getting one for them. Now the new model is safe for all ages, so the parents will be more inclined to buy one for the youngsters. Also asthetically, the thing does look to be built tonka tough.

Another reason they were able to cut the price is that the thing actually only has one screen.

There must be something to this whole thing about the 3d hurting kids eyes and giving them headaches. I have no problem with other 3d but when I try to use it on 3ds it hurts my eyes. It also doesn't look right to me.

It took me awhile to get used to it, and did give me a headache at first. Eventually I got used to it and now it's full blast all the time.

Also I have a friend who didn't use it, and I explained to him how a bit of perseverance helped me. He took my advice and now he's full blast all the time too.

It's definitely weird, it's kinda like those magic eye things that were popular in the mid-nineties, except looking for an extended period of time. Although a lot less extreme.

I get what you're saying man, but I dont see the 2ds surviving the first day. I just dont use the 3d mode of my 3ds anyways. Makes for blurry gameplay. Not to mention right now, I've only one 3ds game. The rest of my games are regular ds games.

Honestly if you really try your best to care for your game system, especially if your parents help you, a 3ds shouldnt break so easily. I wager a child without even trying but just being excited could easily drop the 2ds and it'll break.

It could even end up broken in the craziest way possible, so if they do get one their parents should pay for warren-tie. But then again, with school in session I guess they would leave it at home. And releasing it on the day that I pick up my copy of Y version, must say Nintendo's thinkin smart. But I still say a warren-tie is a must, cause you never know what could happen to it.

Bentley

Have you never dropped your 3DS by accident? At worst the plastic case would fissure, but there is simply no way it would break like that, according to the on-hand reviewers the plastic is even bulkier than that of the regular 3DS.

At least here in Europe, you don't just leave kids hang around with their videogames all the time, it'll be the parent carrying around the game console most of the time (at least with the really young children).

Right, but a big argument some have made against the 2DS is that it isn't pocket friendly.

I'm only suggesting that, to children, the same case can be made against the 3DS.

The 3DS XL fits in my 9 year old sons pocket if needed. It came with a free hard case so it's usually just carried or when he goes to school, it goes in his back pack. I'd be afraid that without some type of case for the 2DS, there would be a high probability that the screen would get broken. My son's Ipod didn't make it three months before it broke.

I got my first system when I was 6 years old. It was a 7 year old hand me down Atari 2600 with 10 games. I was blown away by how awesome it was.

2 years later I was 8 and I got an 8 year old hand me down 2-XL with less than 10 games. Again I was blown away.

When I was 9 I discovered my grandparents Intellivision. It was 8 years old. They had nearly 30 games. Mind still blown.

When I was 10 I found a 14 year old Pong system. I loved it.

Don't buy a 2DS for a 6 year old. Give them your old original Game Boy and they wont know the difference.

Everything impresses a 6 year old. 10 year olds will only be impressed if you set the bar low when they were 6. Think ahead and don't make your parenting life harder than it has to be.

@6? Buy a bag of beans. Hide them around the house and tell the kid that beans are pokemon. They'll have just as much fun searching for beans as pokemon.

Hide 99 beans. Tell them there are 100 magic pokemon beans and they have to collect them all. You'll keep them busy for years.

Or do you mean - What if the adult parent wants to trade pokemon? Then buy whatever you want and get the 6 year old some magic beans and sticks.

I was just thinking that the adult may want to turn something they both enjoy into a bonding experience. Not to say you couldn't bond over some 2 player 2600, but Pokemon would probably be funner.

The beans idea is good though.

I've broken my fair share of consoles and despite everything, the screens have never been the most broken part, flexible parts such as the shell of the 3DS are by far the worst offenders in this regard. I don't think that a kid that breaks a 2DS would fare much better with a regular 3DS.

Yeah I don't think this is going to work with most kids that go to public schools. When I was in elementary school I was well aware of what types of games were available with what systems and even what games were going to be released.

This was all before the internet, remind you. Now? Pfft... You've got kids bringing 3DS' and tablets to school, surfing the internet and nearly everything else. If you gave any kid an original Gameboy let alone a "bean" they'd laugh at you.

At age 6? I can see a 10 year old figuring out he doesn't have the latest and greatest but 6? Granted it has been 30 years since I hung out with any 6 year olds but my memory is they were pretty gullible.

If you cave in to him laughing at you when he is 6 you are going to have a hell of a time in 10 years when he's looking for a brand new car.

I think it's just that you're getting old, D. Like I said, kids bring their handhelds/phones/tablets to school these days. It's pretty easy to figure out you don't have the latest and greatest when you can compare your game to what the kid sitting next to you is playing.
