I first heard about this game a few years ago and after learning that it was a precursor to the first Zelda game on the game boy I wanted to play it. Originally released as a Japan exclusive it was recently translated into English.
In this game you play as the prince of the kingdom of Sable (who you get to name) on a quest to defeat an evil king and rescue a princess before his childhood rival can. The story is humorous with some good plot twists here and there. It won’t win any awards for writing but it’s entertaining enough to make you want to play it to the end.
The game play is divided into Zelda like over world exploration and Mario like 2d platforming sections in dungeons. What sets this game apart is that the prince eventually gains the power to change shape; giving him new abilities that he can use to traverse his environment/ solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
The combat is handled very differently from Zelda. When you touch an enemy a battle automatically starts. If your stats are higher than that of your enemy you win. Stats can be increased by finding stats booting items in the over world and in dungeons so exploring is encouraged.
The music is pretty decent for a game boy game, there are a few memorable tracks including the overworld theme and final boss fight. The final boss music was surprisingly epic for a game boy game.
It took me around 7-8 hours to complete (I have a habit of talking to every NPC after nearly every major event so your time may very) and was an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
If you’re looking for a good game for the game boy this hidden gem is well worth your time.
(I swear the final boss music better be remixed for the next smash bros game!)
