Capture The Flag

Short version of rules: Before March 5th, post 5 score enabled games that you are currently not the champion of. Try to have the most first place scores in all of the posted games at the end of March for a chance to win one of these prizes.

You can track the games and standings on the Flag Leader Board (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&module=league&a=flag).
Post 5 games in this thread by Midnight Monday March 4th CST.

All 5 of the games must work in score mode and have a scoring system. The game you choose must be a game that allows score competition here.
You must post all 5 games at the same time.
You can not post a exact same game that has already been posted. You may use the same game for a different system.
You can not have first place in any of the games that you pick.
If you miss the deadline then you can not enter this contest.


Each of those games will be called a flag. If 10 people enter then there will be 50 flags.
Each person's 5 games will be called a set of flags.
If you have first place in a game then you have captured that flag.
Only scores set between Feb 25 and March 31 will count.

Points will be tallied at the end of the month, Midnight March 31st CST.
Points:

1 point for each flag you control.
2 bonus points for each of your own flags you control.
10 bonus points for each set of flags you control - taking all 5 flags from a single person.
5 additional bonus points if you control your own set of 5.



If there is a tie for first place in a game then no one gets credit for controlling the flag. No points will be awarded for that game.
If someone not entered in this contest has first place in a game then no one gets credit for controlling the flag. No points will be awarded for that game.
Whoever has the most flag points wins one of the 3 prizes above plus a badge.
If there is a tie then we will go to sudden death.

You can't have first in the 5 games that you personally pick. If someone else picks a game you have first in, then your current score will count as long as no one beats it in March.

Example. Barra has first place in Magical Crystals. That means Barra can't select that game. But wolfman did pick that game. Which means if no one beats Barra's current score Barra gets points for that game without doing anything.

Ok, now I'm really confused. So, some players will get a head start because people picked games that they are already #1? What happens when a game is picked where the #1 player isn't playing in the tournament? Do you have to beat their score to capture the flag? If so, then it's possible some flags will never be captured. It seems to me it would be better if all scores on all games started at zero and at the end of March, whoever has the highest score, gets the flag. Like we do for the game of the year contest. It's easy to understand and fair for everyone.

I really hope I'm not coming off as a complainer. I think it's great that we have the opportunity to play for such great prizes. I just want to make sure I understand the rules and am hoping that with such great prizes up for grabs, everyone has a fair shot at winning.

If I think I could get first on a game, I'm probably already first so I can't pick the game. What I'm left with is trying to find games where I either failed to beat the top score on my first efforts or I've never played it before. So yes, there is probably a decent chance I'll pick a game where I don't beat the top score. I don't see any way around it as it's a function of the rules. If this contest was held a year ago, I'd have no problem finding five games.

Anyways, I seem to be the only one that has any issue with this so I'll just shut up now and enjoy the contest. Thanks again.

Since there is only one month to score in so many games I'm going to change the rule to only scores set between Feb 25 and March 31 will count. preexisting scores will not count.

Otherwise people like Elrod that already have tons of scores would have a huge advantage over everyone else.

Just submit a score. You don't have to have the highest score of all time. Just the highest during the contest.

Go for it, it's a great game. I can't play overhead racing games using a mouse. I think Stocker is perfect for using a keyboard as all you need is left/right and one button for gas. Or is it just shifting on this game? Have you tried Shift/F5 to get the mouse to work?

As DB said there is no better controller for this game than a keyboard. Apprently its 10 times easier than the original controls.

I think trying to play all of the games would be a huge mistake. I'm thinking high scores are gonna be hard to come by. People aren't picking games they suck at. My strategy is going to be to first to put up scores on my picks that will hopefully stand and then pick 5 or 6 other games that I think I can compete on. I figure if I can defend my 5 and steel a couple of others then it's been a success. Will it be enough to win? Probably not but I have a full time job and three kids to take care and this is one contest where having a ton of free time over the next month is going to be huge. IMO the best part of this contest is that there are so many games to chose from a person won't have to play games they don't like to have a chance to win.

so, we have an entire year to play 17 games, and 1 month to play (at the moment) 60 games.Right. The strategy to this contest will be different than the strategy to the year long game champ contest.

By the end of the year every top score in the game champ contest will be extremely impressive. And the winner will have a score in every game in the contest.

The winner of this contest probably wont even submit a score on 75% of the games. The strategy of this contest is to make smart decisions about which games you spend time on. Spending time on a game that you eventually will only get second place is a waste of time.

You want to look very closely at how the bonuses work.

Focus on sets, especially your own set.

Example. If you have first place in all 5 games you picked you get 30 points. While just having first place in 5 random games from different sets would only be 5 points.

Taking an entire set from someone else gives you 25 points and takes 30 points away from them.

If someone is just a couple points ahead of you breaking up one of their sets can cause them to lose points which might help you just as gaining points yourself.

If you have 11 strategic scores you will probably have a really good chance of winning. Your own set. One other set. And one score from second place to break their set, causing them to lose 15 points.

-Do we have to play the scenario or can it be exercise mode?
-If we can use exercise mode which level do we need to start at? Normal and Hard give you bonus points right off the bat.

I've had no problems with the NES games running so far. Was playing a Snes one however, got quite far and my computer decided to start heating up and stuff. Losing frames quite frequently at times. Computer finally shut off like it tends to when it overheats. Or before it overheats as a fail safe. That's frustrating. Suggestions?

It's bad game design, not a problem with the site. Basically, you just need to be quick on the draw with the "p" key. Believe me, we've all lost scores this way, it's a small price to pay considering how amazing the set up is overall.

yeah, overflows count...after submitting go to view scores and you will see your pending submission...I add a little note about score overflow or time of game etc. if a longer one.

however, I set new WR on qbert-colecovision first week I was here where I lost a WR-score turnover game. I think a previous game they felt was higher score when it actually was lower. not a huge deal as I know I easily can beat what I did sometime soon.

i must say, if the verifiers watch the actual game, they can tell if it is a good game and sound score. sometimes we miss the window after a sudden death. cannot the verifiers take a screenshot on our behalf?
i know i will get it right on games i play often, but for the one off's and comp games we hate, this would be a great help. after all, it's an arcade score league, not a "press this button quickest competition"!!!
many records are lost over this, methinks.

I have the same feeling, because i spent almost 2 hours on a game (102 dalmatians on gameboy that i didn't know before playing for the 1st time) and i had the bad surprise after finishing the game that it didn't show my final score so i press F12 to submit something, which i suppose is the .inp (recording) of the game even if i knew that the snapshot was wrong.

That's why i answer this to the administrator who contact me :

Ok i wasn't sure that it could be accepetd but like i play almost 2 hours (it was the first time i played this gem ^^), i couldn't know that this game didn't show the score at the end and more, like i finished this game, i didn't take the snapshot when it shows me the last password to unlock mini-games.

i was sure that you could access to the inp and that you could make the snapshot at the good moment. (in the website i play and where i'm an administrator and confirmer, we exceptionnaly can make the snapshot when this problem appears).

This is sure that i won't play this game again and risk to miss the good moment to press F12...

And what would have you do if i press F12 during the ending, but without the score ?

I think that your rules should change because i think that they result of the ancient systemn, where the inp wasn't accessible by you.

I'm just a bit frustrated because i slept after midnight yesterday to finish this game and there will be nothing to do to go back in the future and press this F12 key at the good moment ^^
Reading all the other comments, i think that this situation isn't exceptionnal and that it discourages the gamer to make the better score possible just to be sure that the score will count.

One small tip on RC Pro Am.

The yellow car can and will take off to super speed if you start shooting other cars in the race. You can stop it if you shoot him as soon as he takes off but if not you better make sure you stay in at least 3rd because he'll start lapping you if he can.

my problem is i have only played 11 of the games chosen, and 5 of them are my choices!! so, i only know 6 games out of 85.

my first ask is, how do you control the ship in mad planets? i only discovered that it rotates with the mouse today. how do people play it?

A real Mad Planets has the same type of controls as Tron. Flight stick with a trigger for a fire button, and a spinner. This is hard to do in MAME, which is why the Tron score here is pretty low (that's about as high as I could do with a keyboard ;) ) although now that I know how to use the mouse for a spinner, I may be able to increase it slightly.

The only points you get are
Time left on your clock.
Completing the round quickly - separate from the time left bonus.
Not getting hit once.

If you have over 20 diamonds you can press Start + A (Enter+Z) for a special move. If you have over 50 diamonds you get an extra special move. The move is different for each mask. The best, IMO, is the jason mask with over 50 diamonds - you get an extra life.

In the other thread Kong gave some great tips for strategy. Trying to play all of the games would be a big mistake.

Regarding Mad Planets. I refuse to use a mouse on any game I don't have to. I haven't played this game much (like three or four times) so it will take a lot of practice to get used to this set up but this is how I did it. Left hand on the joystick for moving the ship around. Thankfully this game has autofire or I'd be in trouble but I put my right thumb on a bottom button (on the xarcade) and just hold it there for shooting. I then use my right index and middle fingers on two top row buttons for rotating the ship. For me, this game would be a lot more fun if I could control the ship like in Asteroids.

Star Trek-Original arcade uses a spinner but I control it like Asteroids. Left index and middle fingers for left and right. Right index for thrust, right middle for shotting, right ring finger for warp and a thumb botton for nukes.

Space Fury - Uses buttons just like Asteroids. Left fingers for left/right and right hand fingers for thrust and shooting.

Dig Dug - Using my 8 way joystick for this game doesn't work for me so I use the keyboard. Arrow keys for moving and right enter for pumping. The arcade uses a 4 way joy and has buttons on both sides so you can either pump with your left or right.

Spy Hunter 2 - Left hand buttons for steering. Right hand buttons for gas/shooting and shifting. I've never played on an original so no clue how it's set up.

Video Pinball-Left button for left flipper, right button for right flipper and another right button for bump. I've played this a ton both on an original and in MAME with the art. RU's version has no art so if you've never played before, you're at a big disadvantage. Hit all the targets and go down the left side to get the extra ball.

If you haven't done so, I suggest you make a donation so you can watch gameplay. I learned a ton about Alpine Ski just by watching Rick's replay.

Lode Runner you get 10000 bonus for not killing enemies
Hunchback is memorization
Trog pinnapples can earn up to 80000 per trog after a few and level completion gives points
Marvin's Maze you get a score multiplier for multiple emenies killed by laser
Go! Go! Mile Smile you get score multipliers for each piece collected while still outside egg (max: 1000 per) and with number of enemies kill with rainbow egg
Dino City once you get past the first level it get signifigantly easier as lives become pretty abundant
Dracula: Crazy Vampire talk to the witch and you can attack, you have to collect the bat symbol to preceed to the next level you stun with one hit and can gain life by touching and killing enemies, also you gain potion while you are at zero in exchange for life in sunlight(involentary)
Mr.Nutz hidden coin increase the overall score after you beat a boss

I know how to play most of the other games but most of them are generic beat'em up or sidescrolling shooters, don't hesitate to ask and more game specific questions.

Yeah, I like the scoring system. The owning of a set being worth so much is cool, both for incentive to own a set, and also to explore others games.

Also, regretting the Super Off Road Choice. Honestly only played the Arcade one (genesis a bit too) a lot back a few year ago. It's scored differently, at least from the arcade version I had (Xbox Midway arcade hits 3). The SNES one scores based off the money which is just stupid. You have to spend all your money every round pretty much. So, that'll be a tough one. SNES one also seems more difficult than the arcade one, and the Genesis one. Don't know why I didn't just pick the Genesis or arcade version. Oh well, I'm up for the challenge when I have the time.

Edit: Also, quick question. What framerate (%) did my Dino City and Super EDF submissions come in at, in contrast to one of the NES games I submitted? I seem to have trouble keeping a consistent framerate at rare moments unless I prop my Laptop up off the desk, and even then it heats up pretty bad with SNES games. No problem with NES games though. Sad my computer can't even handle SNES now :P

Another minor thing you can do is reduce the work of your proccessor by reduceing the display properties of your screen and change your windows theme to the basic classic version and obviously enough you should also close all unsed programs.

I know how much of a problem this can be as the same thing happened to me a few years ago, at worst you'll eventually have to replace the fan, or HDD and/or your battery will start to get damaged from your system overheating too much.

I'm aware of most of these, yeah. Not sure, nor do I think I have the means to clean out my fan though. This is a laptop after all. I think I might go with the classic thing. I know display can make a difference. I put it on 800x600 resolution whenever I watch hockey online. It's not like it can't handle a lot of this, it just chutters when it heats up. Again, no problem with NES though. Scared to even try Coin op.

Thanks though, I hope I don't already have to replace the HDD. The only thing that's relatively new in this computer. Computer is 6 years old, and the hard drive is 1 year old.

Just take your computer to a local computer doctor place and they'll clean your filter for a minal fee probably same day, just don't take it to a retailer (like Bestbuy) the will almost certainy force you to go through the full check-up service.

for example, when it gets to skeet shooting, the controls change, so a run button becomes the shoot button, and i use joystick to run. it's very confusing, using "left" to shoot and the shoot button to go "right"!!!

No, because the game does not auto-pause while changing input controls, the pause part would only be an issue if you need to make major changes to the controls, as it takes some time to change the controls.

It's still too early to make predictions but here's what I'm seeing. Permafrostrick will be dumping a 3M point Pac Man score and a 200K+ score on Mad Planets and will most likely keep his flags. And TRB will be dropping a 3M+ score on Cabal once he feels like it and will most likely keep his flags. I'm going on the assumption that you and these two teams will keep their flags and it's going to come down to has the most other flags. It's still anyone's game as nobody is immune to the possibility that someone drops a score to break up your flags at the last minute not allowing you time to get it back. I'd be very suprised if this contest isn't decided in the last couple of hours.

Maybe, 600k is the best I've done and then I see Ace of Spades got 200k more in less time than I did so I dunno if I can retake it.

hmm, even though it tremendously helps kernzy, Nuts and Milk God's score should not count for the contest. I thought only those that listed 5 games by the deadline and are shown in the leaderboard are part of the contest. Sure, others may trounce our scores, but none of those would count.

Nuts and Milk God user is not in the contest...so their score should not count.

DB Cooper...thanks for vote of confidence. I currently am sick though....might be able to churn out a mad planets score...but no way I can endure a pac-man run lasting 5-6 hours right now.
I may practice some though and re-memorize my 9th key pattern so I would be set though cuz hopefully not sick for next 2 weeks.

ahh, I didn't catch rule 9...interesting.
mad planets...tried recently with keyboard and mouse and failed...but need to tune up my sensitivity. I know years back when I did the 200+ posted at MARP I used keys and mouse...but had a really good setup and played it a lot to get to that level.

I may have to try my joystick for movement and mouse as the dial(man I need to get a dial spinner added).

the key for early rounds isn't so much movement as it is good dial control. I need from trial and error find the good sensitivity that fits my current mouse etc.

it would surprise me if I could throw out a 200k without a lot of play...but 100+k is very doable.

I know it is stated in the rules, however I agree with Rick.
IMO it would be better if only "participants" scores would count for the competition.
For now "Nuts and Milk vs FudgyDRS" and "Pac Man vs Permafrostrick" scores are the example of how "unfair" the current rule is with the participants. If someone ask me, yes, I suggest changing in the rules o/ (maybe I regret about it, because me and other players are not affected by it for now, that's it). In the other hand, it's more than half time of the competition... Just my opinion :)

If someone chose a game that they can't take first in, then they made a poor choice. It is just part of the strategy of the contest.

Actually, CKF is right. The rules have always said you have to have first - the rules never mention that the score has to be set during March. But the leaderboard (http://www.retrouprising.com/arcade.php?act=Arcade&module=league&a=flag) was incorrectly tracking only March scores. Sorry, I know it is late in the contest to be fixing this, but I only just now noticed and I just set the leaderboard to match the rules.

How would sudden death work as it looks as if this might actually happen?
If sudden death happens then the only people that CAN win will be those that tied for first. Everyone else is eliminated and has no chance to win but all previous contest scores stay and everyone can still interfere by stealing flags from the remaining players.

The contest will be extended 24 hours. All other rules apply.

If there is still a tie after 24 hours then the same thing happens, eliminate all players not currently tied for first and extend 24 hours and repeat until one person is standing.

So you can lose in sudden death by anyone taking one of your scores and you can win by gaining a new score.

I personnaly think that if no one is in capacity of taking the lead in Valter's score, then he will be the winner for sure. And i think some of the other player, like Razeluxe, D.B Cooper or kernzy, could take the lead.

If i was certain that no one could have a complete set, then i could try to play other games, but the are so parameters to count (and the K10 ^^).

I'm sure the last week and of course the last day will be full of surprise, so the RU team needs to be ready to have a max of scores during this period and to confirm them as soon as possible.

And you need to be capable to identify the date of the recordings to be certain of who will have play during the time limit. The games played during the time limit but confirmed after the deadline should count for the competition.

i don't agree with non competitors taking flags from competitors, because one with many contacts can make a phone call, offer ten bucks to take a score to ruin a set of flags and win. but it's fun nonetheless!! everyone is waiting untill the last 2 hours to take some scores, so we will only know the real competitors in the last few hours, if they can be on then. we all have a strategy, which makes this more fun than usual. it's very cool. i hope i have a chance!! ha!!

Ugh Ace of Spades didn't make it easy to get my Mean Bean Machine score back. I usually can't even get close now though once I got up to 711k

It just gets so fast that at some point once you get slightly above the halfway point of the screen you just can't turn the piece to go into a tight area

I take solace in that at one point I did hold all my flags and was able to take them back a couple times...

Well my flags were actually pretty strong, but the highest I've ever (includeing in an arcade) been able to score on puzzle bobble is about 35 million and I can't even score 20 with directional keys.

Oh, I never practice on these game, I just find playing multiple times gives a better idea for level layout. And for games like lode runner you can map a path for the no kill bonus.

Same here. I'll spend about an hour at most on a game at a time. I can't play the same game for a huge amount of time. (exceptions being Yakuza 3 and Persona 3. lol)

However, as ever, I checked the frames, and as everytime, I checked the "View All Scores", however my record is not there! Please let me know it's another of these "site down" and the file was received, because I don't wanna play it as far again. (I played the Genesis version 20 years ago, and I was pretty sure that version has end, if memory serves. But this SNES seems endless!).

Maybe it's something related to my previous submissions, 2, that are not verified yet (440,000, about 24 hour ago, and 5,130,000 about 22 hours ago).

Well, I hope everything is ok with my submission. Good challenges guys!

Seems I read somewhere that there are 99 tracks for this game.

I'm going to be doing a bunch of family stuff on Easter and the 31st is also opening day of baseball. I probably won't have much time to submit any scores but I wasn't going to win anyways. Without knowing you played this game (even at 5M) i played yesterday at this game (i knew this version was really much easier than arcade) during 2 hours !! And i was so tired that i show to my sons how to loose with honor ^^

I recorded a 6.090.000 score and i'm pretty sure that i won't play yhis game again except if i have one day to loose in my life ;-)

@ Kong, I am not sure if it was the last. After that, I think I only "played" the same game Super Off Road (SNES) for some seconds, just to check if the game/emulator was not "stopped" at any point. And yes, I was very careful when finished the long game, considering the long time spent, and it delayed a bit to submit and "success". So, please try to recover it.

So far, all of the scores seem beatable, I'd try the street fighter games but I'd have to reconfigure my ps3 controller plugin settings first, qcf doesn't come out well on a computer.

Mods are discussing rules for Kid Chameleon. The score to beat is probably 222,900, not 1,118,301. Either way both amazing scores are by TRB so the flag owner/points will stay the same.

The rules for this game will probably end up being:

Your score can not end in a 1.

And clearing the game means playing more than 3 levels.

There are tricks that allow both of those things to happen and those tricks will probably be banned.

bleeeechhh... ;) Well, I almost got my Crazy Kong score back. Got within 12K. Made a couple stupid mistakes in the last few levels (one of which was my finger twitched causing me to jump at the wrong time...d'oh!)

I'm done...didn't play any of them this weekend. I could get mad planets tonight but pac-man..just never had time to do it...takes 5+ hours for me to do a kill screen 3.3+ mil game...not sure why I chose that one now versus other games I am decent at. I guess I was trying to coax myself into playing pacman again...have not played it in a few years now.

wonder if any of the top 3's sets will get broken at end here. I am tempted to be spoiler and try and break a couple sets...figure since I would not win though that make make me an enemy though so I likely won't.

it will be interesting to see how it plays out the last few hours.

I tried to get back my 2 flags but i only success in alpine ski... For alien arena, i think i made a big mistake with this game i didn't know exactly before ^^ I beat my old score but it was not enough to beat razeluxe :-(

I had good moment with this new strategy even if i knew that i couldn't beat valter because of his choices ;-)

I admit defeat, it has been a good run but alas I could not capture my flags or break all others. Next time (hopefully there will be cause this was pretty fun) I'll make a better choice of games, games that I know that I can set and keep a high score at.

I watched and verified Permafrostrick's Video Pinball (http://www.retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6594/) score some hours ago. It SHOULD be updating in the leaderboard however may have picked up a 1st April timestamp or some such.

As a result gamers may need to be aware that it may take some extra time to verify the winner/s of this contest.

Yep verified although on my screen it said Apr 01, 13 00:58 as the time.
I think daylight savings has affected it somehow.

yeah, I managed to throw in a couple zingers about 7-8 pm EDT. Sawys had taken back alpine ski...briefly. :P

I also got DB Coopers flag for video pinball. yeah I noticed it long ago had stated I was new champion but figured maybe the CTF page won't be updated til all those are gone through. I would have gone for one of TRB's...Cabal would have been my best shot but he put up an awesome score for that. I had no other last day surprises other than alpine ski and video pinball.

still not sure why I picked pacman...figured maybe that would force myself to play it...which I still didn't....oh well.

Isn't that since your a "site mod" you can view the settings of the site? Also, does this mean you changed the scoreboard settings or the score time, now that the score now reads "04-01-13 3:43"?
