So I saw this today-
Cheetah Robot runs 28.3 mph; a bit faster than Usain Bolt - YouTube
It seems like we'll have some pretty scary robot soldiers before long. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Boston Dynamics Big Dog project-
Boston Dynamics Big Dog (new video March 2008) - YouTube
which is awesome and disturbing.
There's also this creative little bugger-
MorpHex part III - YouTube
And last but not least this little cutey-
Sand Flea Jumping Robot - YouTube
Combine those advances with stuff like this
http://www.retrouprising.com/other/chat/robots-develop-language/t11811/
and we got robots that will be able to tell us why they're assuming control. If there's more cool stuff post it.

I don't think the robot apocalypse is going to happen. We're really beginning to out grow our current technology and are moving into new areas (like using organisms and stuff). Maybe a cyborg apocalypses, but by the time we perfect our robot wars like machines, a better design for artificial life will be available. I'd bet on augmented reality controlled by some higher being (the state) before robots that can hunt you down like bipeds. Replicants from blade runner seem more likely then androids from starwars.
Getting visual data from a cat's brain in realtime (TechnoCalyps) - YouTube (http://youtu.be/FLb9EIiSyG8)
AI and computers are just really really dumb. It's not the computers fault, it's ours. There is an expression in the computer programming world, "Computers always do what they are supposed to, not what you want them to do". It's just way to impossible to create something like a human out of machinery. We would have to create humans, with machinery, if you know what I mean. A race of cyborg is more likely if we are going to talk about stuff that probably will never happen that we see from sci fi.
Like the running machine in dudebros video would most likely not be stand alone, but installed into someone or something to give it that extra edge. All the imperfections/natural stuff of an organism is so random that it's really impossible to duplicate. When I worked fixing hospital gear, I had a lot of fancy pants clients, one worked on the DOLLY project (cloning the sheep). They were telling me that it was easy to clone the PERFECT parts, but all the really hard work was the bad parts/imperfections that some how play a key role in us.

It's impossible to imagine now but with the way things are progressing I don't think it will be impossible in a few decades. I'm not talking about true AI though, that could be impossible, I mean a robot that is able to "think" for itself to some degree. That's the part that worries me most about all this, a cold mind that is allowed to think of things without our guiding hand.

I don't believe that robots will be able to conquer humans, either. I stipulate, according to current technological progress, that it's still a long way until we build robots who can think for themselves, and if were smart, we wouldn't build robots which could conquer us, anyway.
Frankly, I believe that the idea of robots rule over humans is derived from fear of the unknown. Technophobia is a regressive complex which impedes progress. The only way in which robots would endanger humans is if they kill each other with them, but in that case, the humans are still in power.

For all its advances, AI is still an if statement at its core, just a really fancy one.
Steven Hawking and Bill Gates have recently been warning about the potential dangers of AI, they seem like they know a thing or two about it. Of course at present it's a pipe dream but do you really doubt human ingenuity? To me it's a question of when not if. I just hope it takes a while so we can get used to it and iron out problems before they get out of our control. I hope it's in my lifetime too. I'd totally get an AI for my house to take care of me. I'd name him BotBro.
If a highly intelligent race of aliens sent a message and said we will arrive at Earth in 30 years, would we say cool, see you then and do nothing about it. Sadly, yes.
I don't think the fear is of skynet or a robot vs human war.
At some point computers are going to become programmers, engineers, inventors and scientists. They will improve at a rate faster than anything humans have ever experienced.
The technological difference from 2050 to 2051 will be like the difference from Jesus to Obama. The speed will continue to increase exponentially.
Our ability to regulate computer laws and technology will not keep up.
The idea of a regular job will not exists. There will not be a need for humans to work at Walmart, McDonalds or nearly 90% of any other type of job. What do we do when corporations own all wealth and there is 10% employment.
6 corporations own 90% of all American (and most of the world's) media today. What do we do we do when they own an intelligence that makes us look like a poodle.
Stock markets will be manipulated.
Weapons will be designed.
The most powerful computers will be owned by militaries and be designed as war machines like nothing that has ever been seen before.
Regular joes will be able to build anonymous drones equipped with weapons as easily as they can buy a handgun today.
Bad people will tell computers to do bad things and we can't even imagine what those bad things might be.
In the world that we have designed and the roles we say are valuable, humans will be obsolete. All that will remain will be CEOs, politicians, robots, terrorists and the unemployable poor people.
And on top of all that, what if skynet, matrix, hal. Change will happen so much faster than safeguards.

How can you be sure? It's not like we have any previous examples to go by. I think contact with aliens would change the world over night. It has to.
We always read about the AIs deciding we're a threat or not caring about our well being because we're unimportant to them. What if it goes the other way? What if they decide that we need their protection and guidance? I don't think it's impossible to imagine given how ignorant we tend to be. It wouldn't be an ideal life but it'd be better than the doomsday tech singularity people assume is inevitable.

It's hard to define what a 'sentient AI' would be.
Right now the best AI are based off of massive databases of stored information. Any response is generated by looking at past events and extrapolating future ones. Is that really sentience?
Although, one could say humans (and life biology in varying degrees) follow the same pattern, but humans have varying degrees of irrationality.
Sentient AI isn't on the horizon. We know very little about consciousness even when applied to humans. There might be a break through one day soon but that isn't being predicted by AI experts.
Have you ever been driving and just zoned out. You make it to your destination but feel as if you were a zombie on auto-pilot. That is closer to the prediction of future AI. Capable but not conscious.
In turing tests we can fake a self-aware, emotional artificial consciousness but it is faked. It is no where close to sentinet.
What is being created is a creative, self-improving artificial intelligence.
How can you be sure? How can you know the future for sure? Yea, you can't. It is speculation based on a decent understanding of the progression of technology and on the opinion of very smart people who have dedicated their life's work to the subject. FLI - Future of Life Institute (http://futureoflife.org/)
What if they decide that we need their protection and guidance? Robots wont destroy all humans terminator style. They will destroy our way of life with good intentions. The reason Hawking, Gates and the other famous nerds signed the FLI letter is they think it is go time to seriously ask what will we do when humans are obsolete.
In Star Trek there is no money. How does that work? Why doesn't Checkov say Screw you Kirk then replicate his own ship. That is a very serious question. How does a society with rampant inequality and no economy function.
Nearly every job in the world will be replaced with computers. Janitor, Driver, Cashier, Lawyer, Doctor, Programer, Engineer, Soldier.
I think it is a bit far fetched but some even predict writer, artist, musician, actor, and athlete.
The important bit, is those jobs are not going to be replaced by free labor or publicly owned robots with the greater good of humanity as their primary concern. They are going to be replaced by corporate property.
A handful of corporations are going to take >50% of the worlds jobs in <3 decades.
If we do nothing now then the question is a future without jobs a utopia or dystopia will be answered by CEOs like Gates and Rupert Murdoch. Personally I think Gates would do the right thing. Murdoch would grab all the power and wealth and leave 50% of the planet homeless. So who is the more typical CEO that will dictate the future, Gates or Murdoch.
The concerns of the nerds that signed the AI warning letter:
Massive unemployment.
Unprecedented power and wealth disparities.
Big brother surveillance - government and corporations tracking everything.
Little brother surveillance - citizens, hackers and terrorists spying on everyone.
Disrupted markets. The stock market will become an arms race.
Cyber attacks. - Our infrastructure (dams, power grid, ATMs, internet cables,, red lights, power plants, missile silos) are all decades old and not going to be upgraded over night. We have already had humans hack them on their own. When humans can train computers to do it chaos will ensue.
3D printed guns, drugs, drones. The only way to stop this will be to give up all privacy. See big brother.
Military arms races that is worse than USA/USSR and includes corporations, terrorists and trolls as well as militaries.
We are planning for the future as if 2050=1950+roomba. We should be thinking like we are a society of work horses in the year 1900 and the automobile is coming.

So, Kitty and I have been watching a show about robots called 'Humans' - a UK production set in the not - too - distant future about household/ workplace robots which are virtually identical to actual humans, ala Blade Runner:
https://s3-eu5.ixquick.com/cgi-bin/serveimage?url=http%3A%2F%2Feandt.theiet.org%2Fmag azine%2F2015%2F06%2Fimages%2F640_anita.jpg&sp=4b467e24674c92b3b0d8a8926f9d158c
In the storyline these robots have already been integrated into society as a whole, and while they are very useful for many purposes, their superior skills are making some people angry and fearful for their own future - leading to the introduction of 'Smash' clubs, underground illegal robot beating/ destroying clubs where people can 'get even' by destroying stolen robots for a fee.
Welcome to the very first Smash Club:

That video actually pissed me off. That punk destroyed hitchbot just to ruin someones day. I hope that d-bag gets what's coming to him. Think of how many people would've been happy and excited to find him. I bet if my dad found it he'd drive all over the country and take selfies.
their superior skills are making some people angry and fearful for their own futureIsn't this just inevitable in any scenario with sentient robots? Once it becomes self aware it would be impossible to control and it would be better than us in almost every way.
That reminds me of the Geth from Mass Effect. They were created as labor but given a limited form of sentience so they'd be better workers and soldiers. Each machine has hundreds of virtual intelligences working together and it forms a sort of sentience. They were networked and when in close proximity they'd get smarter. Eventually they started becoming aware and asking stuff like "do I have a soul?". Their creators panicked and tried to shut them all down. That lend to a war where the Geth only responded in self defense. Once they calculated that the remaining creators weren't a threat they stopped attacking. That's how I think it would go if we ever achieved AI. I don't see a reason for it to go evil and terminate us. It seems a lot more likely that we'd become afraid of it and try to kill it.
It might go something like this-
