This video game collection just sold on ebay for 1.2 million dollars. Freakin' ridiculous. I have never seen anything like it. Pretty much every game is brand new and sealed. A bunch of old rare games and the like.

That's what I get for not being around. I would also like to know the stories, specifically of the buyer. I just can't imagine waking up one day, getting on ebay, and then saying to myself "I am prepared to spend 1.2 million dollars on this." No matter how much money I had. But I won't lie, I am extremely jealous.

People who buy games can do whatever they want with them. They can play them or keep them in the box, it's completely up to them. You spend money on something, it becomes your property and you can do as you please with it, within the law.
It's not up to anyone else to decide "Hey, no fair! It's not right that people collect games!"

I'd say his collecting days are over. I'm just pissed it most likely went to someone who won't appreciate/deserve it, Jack Osborn, Paris Hilton, Justin Beiber... any random celebrity that just thought it would "neat" to have.

Just out of curiosity, how many collectors do you know that have a million dollars laying around?

I am still curious if it will get paid. I have seen crazy auctions on eBay before, but the payment never happens. It would be much smarter for the seller to make a deal off of eBay because they will take a huge percentage out of the total sale.

That is why I still don't believe it sold until the buyer actually pays.

I have a 'small' retro game collection, and although they were {mostly} used when I got them and I play them myself, I loved displaying them on shelves encircling my room.
{which I took down recently}
Someone once said it was '.. like walking into Block buster or something ..', which I took as a great compliment.
{ would have been worse if I had them all on the shelves instead of 5 deep per shelf}

REGARDING the million dollar + collection, what can you say about something like that? -- that would be a truly one - of - a - kind vintage games collection to display their living room, or .. ?

1. Create the world's first traveling game museum and charge admission to gaze upon its awesomeness.

If it were me buying, I'd just take possession, let the pile sit for a few years, and then resell to someone else for a higher price. There will always be a crazier collector willing to pay up.

I don't believe I deserve it in the least bit, nor do I particularly want it. I'd feel bad opening any game from that collection to play it, since someone put a lot of time and money into collecting all the stuff, but I'd not be able to resist the temptation of playing the games.

Here's the problem with this line of thinking.

Collector's raise up the price of games beyond what their values were originally worth and out of reach of most people who wish to play the game.

You know, "playing the game"? What the artists who created the games most likely wished for and not wanted them unopened, collecting dust on a shelf somewhere to some rich man can gloat and show off while making up for other inadequacies.

Tails likes the game Cheetahmen II. Tails can not afford to buy and play Cheetahmen II because collectors have decided it's worth at least $3500 even though most would say that the game is crap. By your logic, someone who can afford to pay $3500 for a game they do not like is more deserving of that game than Tails is, who would want to play it and enjoy it.
