That's a pretty big deal. I was looking forward to this movie somewhat, but I really didn't expect this. Joss Whedon directed the movie, so I guess it's to be expected, but now I'm more psyched to watch it.

It opens this weekend, and while I obviously haven't seen it yet, I think I'm going to take a risk and recommend it. Who else is excited?

I don't like super hero movies but I heard some interviews with th cast and it sounds interesting. Plus I heard it just opened in Europe and is killing it at the box office. So I might check this one out for poops and giggles.

Now that I have a big screen with a home theater I don't spend money to watch movies at the theater anymore. But, if I was to sprlurge and go see just one this year, The Avengers will be the one. I just need to double check that it's appropriate to take my son.

I wouldn't go as far as to say Harry Potter sucks but I only thought the last movie was actually good. The other stuff was just too long and too kidsy.

I'm excited...all of those Marvel movies have been pretty decent and I know that when Marvel studios started making movies, this is the one they wanted to do. I actually like that they did Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America first, gets all the introduction stuff out of the way, the character origins.

I would go see it this weekend, but the little lady is going to Beale Street Music Fest, so it will be a hot weekend of some video games, dog walks, and carpet shampooing...Kentucky Derby is the weekend, could go find a derby party.

I don't really want the conversation to evolve that much, but I understand that it's pretty kidsy and has a main course that's unappealing. I've always just thought of it as one of those series that I can get into solely because of all the neat concepts and interesting history that are fleshed out among the side characters.

I assumed it was rhetorical. Obviously I don't believe anyone has to love anything, but when something that I associate with my appetite for a narrative is brandished to be worthy of loathing, I wouldn't think it would be unreasonable of me to at least imply that I feel the critique a bit harsh and lacking of elaboration.

With that, I hope I leave the question answered and no more to be conceived, unless one could be cunningly tied back to the Avengers.

Well, I watched it Friday and I loved it. I hadn't slept much the night before, and I'm terrible at going long hours without sleep. I fought the desperate need to sleep just to watch the movie and it was totally worth it. I don't like super hero movies much either, but this one was epic. I'm also a big fan of Joss Whedon, so I was pretty much drooling all through the movie. (And then I spent all weekend watching Buffy)

The Harry Potter thing isn't off topic. I brought it up because I read a prediction about The Avengers that said it might beat Harry Potters opening weekend record. You guys need to chill, a little side conversation about HP isn't gonna kill us.

That being said I don't really care to talk about it either. I just don't like how people act like you have two heads if you hate it. I know it was a big deal for a lot of people and I appreciate that it got a whole generation of kids into fiction, and reading in general. I just think it's watered down corny crap. That's it.


So who do you guys like in The Avengers? I'm not a big fan of Thor, too supermany with the near invincibility thing. Whatever character Scarlet is playing is also meh for me. Hawkeye is alright I guess, too bad he didn't have his old school outfit though. Captain America is a tad corny. For me this is all about Hulk. I've been waiting for a movie where he interacts with other super heroes. I like Mark Ruffalo as Banner, the other guys just didn't seem to capture the unassuming nerdy guy like he does.

I love comics... I just don't read them... I hate reading them on the computer, and I've discovered it is a very expensive hobby. Therefore, the only knowledge I have on super heroes is based mostly on popular culture (tv shows, tv show references, movies). For example, I've watched every "The new adventures of Lois and Clark" episode but I am very much aware that is nothing like the "real" superman.

That being said... my favorite avenger is a tie between Hulk and Ironman. Hulk because I loved the tv show; Ironman because he's sexy... not the best argument, but I believe it is very valid since I rarely find a man sexy.

Second I'm kind of interested in Avengers cause it's supposed to be pretty much all Marvel movies in the last 10 years intertwined. I haven't seen most of them but I heard it was planned from the beginning and done well. Currently I want to watch the 2 Hulk movies. I have no idea how the story line goes but I'm guessing there's a misunderstood super hero who has a love interest who doesn't happen to care for Bruce and he happens to save her life and she falls in love. We'll see how this goes I heard the Hulk movies we're made a little to early and the technology wasn't quite there and he looked a little cartoonish.

I saw the first Hulk movie and hated it. I saw most of the second Hulk movie, I really liked it. I liked Ironman and Thor, and I haven't watched Captain America. But I don't know how much those movies stick to the comics, and I know some people make a big deal out of that. I personally don't care much since anyone can make a good story out of something that already exists.

Whoops! I really don't know much about comics I just heard 2 interviews last week from guys in this movie on satellite radio and they made it sound kind of rad. I probably wont see it in the theater but I still look forward to it.

Currently I want to watch the 2 Hulk movies

There are two Hulk movies that came out in the past ten years or so. "Hulk" and "The Incredible Hulk"

The Incredible Hulk was produced by Marvel Comic Studios and is canon in this universe that all of the new Marvel movies are taking place.

Hulk is not canon, it is actually a big steamming pile of it with only one redeeming quality...Jennifer Connelly

Hulk was directed by a guy named Ang Lee whose entire directing style is to remake the book/movie "Sense and Sensibility" in every movie he does, just with different characters, i.e. Sense and Sensibility, Hulk, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Brokeback Mountain.
He took the Hulk and tried to turn it into a pathetic love story where the Hulk has feelings (other than uncontrollable rage and anger) and also had some subplot where he has serious daddy issues...it sucked so bad.

Meanwhile, "The Incredible Hulk" is rockstar awesome. Ed Norton was Banner in that one, Ruffalo took over because there was some sort of contract dispute between Norton and Marvel Studios. It also has Tim Roth, who IMHO, is one of the greatest character villians ever.

Thor wasn't amazing, but it was ok. You kinda have to see it to understands some things that happen in the Avengers, and I regret not watching Captain America because there are parts I didn't quite get at the beginning.

Although now that I'm thinking back to it, I might have thought Thor was ok because I didn't watch the whole movie. I saw that one with my ex, and although I wanted to spent time with him, I felt bad about paying for a movie and not paying much attention to it.

@Jim- I heard they replaced Norton because he became very pushy and wanted to control the creative direction of the character. Sounds like it could be true.

@Kong- I liked half of the Thor movie. I thought the parts on earth were pretty bad but the parts in Valhalla were good. I think the guy who plays Loki was a good choice so he should do well in The Avengers movie.

I watched the Thor movie this past weekend and walked away feeling blaaa. I didn't think it was good (aside from Natalie Portman looking hot). Is it me, or where their literally 2 chicks on Thor's planet...what a crappy place to live. Of the Marvel origin movies, this one seemed the most like a cash grab, but I think the bad guy in Thor is going to be the primary antigonist in the Avengers, so I guess it was kind of necessary.

Here's the thing. I'd really love to see this movie, but the only lead-in movie for it that I've seen is Iron Man, and I know the movies follow a different continuity from the comics so I'd be missing something without having seen the rest. I also have exactly one dollar, which I will not spend. So, I'll likely not see it for quite some time.

I wouldn't worry too much about seeing the lead in movies. The only thing you need to understand is who Loki is and why he's the bad guy. I think that's a pretty easy thing to get even if you don't know Marvel comics. Thor is the beloved son of Odin, the main god. Loki is his adopted brother and he's jealous of Thor. Loki plots to overthrow Odin/Thor and that's the cause of the conflict.

I saw it in the IMAX on Sunday, and it is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen comic book or otherwise. It has now replaced Superman (1978 ) in my mind as the greatest comic book film ever made.

I totally agree DM. I like Batman Begins okay, but The Dark Knight is about as much fun as a colonoscopy. I think it's waaaay the heck overrated, and just doesn't get the character of Batman right in my book. For some reason, alot of people like it, though.

Dark Knight, no. It felt too much like it was set in Chicago or something instead of Gotham, among other problems.
Dark Knight Rises looks like it will suck, I just don't like what they're going for with Bane.

The Dark Knight is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I really don't know why people can think it's dumb. If your complaint is that "it is too long" or "it's too dark", then you probably shouldn't be watching the movie in the first place :P

Batman was portrayed good imo. What didn't you like about him?

Joker was the real treasure. Heath Ledger did a great job and the writers made great lines for him. And I'm not just saying that because he died.

But I understand that it can be considered overrated. I still love it though.

I didn't particularly like Heath Ledger in any role, and I liked the Joker least of all of his roles. I don't care that he's dead, doesn't mean I have to pretend I liked him.

The portrayal of Joker was poor. He went from a sort of funny murderer who used laughing gas and made a lot of jokes in the comics to a super-cynical dark and edgy terrorist who told some jokes in The Dark Knight.

Batman was too roughish, not the smart, calculating Batman I am used to.

I didn't think it was too long, I've seen longer movies. The darkness is fine, I just didn't really like that they turned Gotham into Chicago. Nolan was trying too hard to make something about an angsty millionaire who fights crime dressed as a bat, who's enemy includes a clown like man, a mobster that resembles a penguin and a man with two faces, seem realistic.

I didn't like the portrayal of Two-Face particularly either. I liked him better as a straight up villain, not a tragic hero.

I can see why people liked it, but I just really didn't like it.

I was mindblown by the Avengers, I could see it a thousand more
times and still love it. I was absolutely shocked they could pull
all of those characters together and make a great movie out of it.
