View Full Version : One of us should run a new server

I'd be willing to do so. Just going to say that right now. Forget my last attempt at running a server, but should anything happen, I can always transfer the files and have someone else run it. Also, another reason I want to run a server? Mods. I want quite a few mods to this to add to the game. Kind of seems ironic considering I was just talking about downgrading the game haha but heres a couple I'm thinking about.

Kake Generator mod: Adds crazy landscapes that makes the game interesting. Land Generation is much like Alpha, so in other works cool.

Dinosaur Mod: Yes, you heard me right. Some kid told me about this and I looked it up. It lets you essentially raise dinosaurs like a zoo, and/or have them run wild. Why would this be awesome? Come on! Dinosaurs! Personally I think this needs more of a challenge and Giant T-rexes every now and then could do that :P

That's it for now. I'd be happy to add some more cool mods if they're suggested, but I don't want an overload that it's barely minecraft anymore at the same time.

Thoughts? I'll probably be messing around trying to figure out stuff as soon as now. I've got nothing better to do at the moment. Not sure how to add these sorts of mods to a server though. I know how offline, but suggestions on that could help. Needless to say, I'll be looking it up.

Edit: Anyone else willing to run it, let us know.

I was just thinking about how we could get an RU server up again. The main reason I stopped playing MC is because there's no common goal or community feeling for me anymore. The server people are currently playing on is nice but from the very start it was just way too spread out and disorganized. I know people thought we were spread out on the last server but just having a hometown that's connected to everything made it feel like a community to me.

I think the only good way to do this is to pay for hosting. If we go the route of one of us hosting it then we're just gonna run into problems.

CatalystiCam
04-19-2012, 09:00 PM
Yeah, I feel that way too. I'm committed to running a server again, but I never know that my computer always will be with new updates and such. Hosting would be best. How much though? I'd chip in where I can, but I wouldn't be able to for at least a week or two.

Games just not the same on my own, I want a community back, and not one that involves hiding underground 10 000 blocks away :P It was fun for a while, but I prefer overground.

I've only checked one hosting site but they charge 42 bucks for 6 months and 81 bucks for a year. That's with enough slots for 12 players, the only cheaper option is up to 6 for half the price. It seems like a lot but split between a few people it wouldn't be a big deal. They also say that there's a 10% - 15% off on the displayed monthly price for going for longer periods. This is the specs they list-

Guaranteed RAM
Powerful Multicraft Control Panel
Upload modified server jars upon request
Free MySQL Database upon request
One click plugin installation

Instant Setup
Craftbukkit
FTP Access
1Gbps Connection
Location: Phoenix, Az

I'm not sure if those are good or not though, input would be greatly appreciated.

That's really not a bad price when you split it up with even 4ish people. Sounds good to me so long as we can add game mods to it and whatnot like the land generation one.

Dudebro
04-19-2012, 10:33 PM
If we got 8 people to pitch in then we'd only be paying around 10 bucks each. I think that's a good investment for a year of worry free MC play.

It says one click plug in installation. What you're talking about is plug ins right?

Btw this isn't the only host site available. I just read about it on the MC forums and people said it was good but cost a little more.

CatalystiCam

10 bucks is not really a problem for me. I probably wouldn't get it right way though. Sucks going pre-paid though because the least I can get is 35, or 25 if I'm lucky. Guess I'll just order some AHL hockey games or something with the extra. I'm good with paying 10-20 maybe 25 for a year. (funny how I only payed 13 bucks for the game though :P)

Dudebro
04-19-2012, 11:02 PM
Instead of looking for a way to blow the extra money on the prepaid you could just drop the whole thing on the server and someone could send you a check for the difference. Just a thought.

Mareeps
04-19-2012, 11:30 PM
I could probably kick in a few bucks if need be.

Dudebro
04-19-2012, 11:35 PM
It's only 10 bucks but if some of you have no income and still wanna pitch in what you can I'm sure some of us could do 15 instead of 10 for example. The main goal is just to get it online.

One thing we'd have to establish before it started though is some ground rules. Since no one person would be in charge we'd have to all agree on what we'd want and what we don't want. Start brainstorming.

I'm in for 10-20.

You guys know what I want, different "game nights".

Dudebro
04-20-2012, 12:08 AM
I'm not sure how that would work but if it's possible with this set up then I doubt anyone would mind.

When I bring up ground rules I mean like no spawning blocks/resources(exceptions are ok like Tenser events and such). That's something I care about. I don't want to be playing survival with other people playing creative.

CatalystiCam
04-20-2012, 12:13 AM
Fair enough, obviously exceptions may exist for multi-worlds or something. Who knows. I'd like to have some mods in place to add to the game like I was saying. Nothing wrong with adding items and mobs to the game as long as it isn't too much imo.

Also, don't sweat it. My brother and I were hoping to order the AHL games anyways. If we get lucky, Our farm team will be facing off against the local hockey team here, and I'll just buy tickets for that, if I have the extra of course.

Dudebro
04-20-2012, 12:53 AM
You're not understanding what I mean. When I say spawning blocks I mean like OPs spawning resource blocks instead of earning them by digging or finding them. Adding mods isn't the same thing. I'd be fine with almost any mod as long as it doesn't interfere with other players and it's worth it.

Kugyince

I think anyone who plays on the server should have an equal say in it, no matter if they make a $20, $5, or no donation.

Also it should be private. Just members of this group and their friends.

Dudebro

We should do a roll call of people who would want to play on our server. Speak up now so we have an accurate number to rent a server with.

Come on, you guys have been talking about this for ages, it's about time something is done.

I'm telling you, 80$ for 12 player slots and a 1Gbps link with 24 hour access for an entire year sounds like a dream deal, and it isn't a bank breaker for me right now. I'd make that much for ten hours of work, I'm pretty sure I will play more than ten hours of MC within that year.

With that said, here's how I'd set it up.

Three worlds:
-Absolutely Vanilla: No mods, no block spawning, no special events, no admin assistance. Set to hard difficulty.

-Mod World: Requested mods are put on this map. Rules regarding item spawning and admin rescue are a bit relaxed. Maybe special events and maybe creative mode every now and then.

-Challenge Map: Special maps like Spellbound Caves that are switched out at completion.

Dudebro
04-20-2012, 10:53 PM
I posted about this on the MC forum to see what suggestions people have, I'll report back tomorrow if anything good comes up. The one I've been talking about DaddyCheese Hosting: Cheap minecraft server hosting (http://daddycheese.com/) I found on the MC forum and it was said to be good but a little pricier than other options because of that. The 81 bucks a year is from their year plan with 12 slots. I listed their specs on the last page if you wanna look over them to see if they're any good.

The three world idea kinda worries me. The point of having an RU server is so we all play together regularly. I just don't wanna see people divided again. I'd be willing to deal with the occasion block spawning if it meant a larger more active community.

CatalystiCam
04-21-2012, 01:01 AM
I'd like the local community as well, DB. Basically, having a challenge map for example would be just for maps with a story and progress, well not really story but tasks to complete, and I can see it working. You don't really build in the challenge map is what I'm saying.

---------- Post added at 11:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 PM ----------

Also, I mentioned to Sebb that this might be happening. He's on and off active in this game like me. He mostly can't stay pinned to our servers since we keep changing them. Not just you guys, but I was on and off running maps like skyblock with him and other worlds for a time. So I'm constantly getting him to follow me around to different servers to play haha. He'd probably play here and there if we got a good steady dedicated server going. Not to mention one of his classes in his high school lets him play minecraft quite often. Doubt he'd contribute, but if he did, he could just pitch me 5 bucks in real life and I'd pay an extra 5 or so. Doubt he'll play much like I said.

Dudebro
04-21-2012, 01:12 AM
We should make sure we have enough slots for RU people before worrying about any friends or others.

CatalystiCam
04-21-2012, 01:21 AM
12?

Dudebro, Cam3ron36, Seahawk, ChrisP, Tenser, Katz, Drunkninja, RU Joe, Brawlmaster.

Sorry if I'm forgetting someone, it happens xD All the RU people I can think of really, not including Guardian since he pretty much disappeared, or Sebb, Extrien since they're mainly guests and don't really post here. I think 12 should be good to allow a few friends. I don't think we'll ever have 12 at once anyways. What's our record? 8, 9? If it becomes a problem, maybe we bump the server up to 15 max or something, I don't know. I only have 2 friends that would really want to play.

Dudebro
04-21-2012, 01:26 AM
All I'm saying is non RU people are low priority, especially if they probably won't play consistently. Also bumping the slots up bumps the cost up so lets not do that.

CatalystiCam
04-21-2012, 01:32 AM
whatever works, don't particularly want to bump up the cost anywho.

Kugyince

@SHWK: Maybe only two maps, one for general survival and one for events like Challenge maps, parkour maps, creative, etc...

As for mods, I would like a teleport or warp mod. This way, no matter how far apart we build it's just a few keystrokes from each other.

CatalystiCam
04-21-2012, 12:49 PM
I've also suggested it before, but I'd like the runecraft mod. It lets you make invisible doorways, and it gives you stats points for certain things like mining, excavating, farming, etc. I mentioned it before, but you can level up in each category, and it's pretty cool It allows you to do certain things for longer at higher levels, for example: Super breaker which lets you mine a bunch of stone really quick for 5 seconds or more depending on your level.

Seahawk
04-21-2012, 02:42 PM
We can decide what mods you want later, just decide what FEATURES you want present regarding the minecraft executable, otherwise it will lead to server fallout as it has before.

So far the general consensus is a challenge map and a general survival world. Please really hammer out an agreement the rules regarding this general world, because this is where everyone has varying desires (mods, pure vanilla, etc) on how things should work.

That might be a good idea because we really haven't had enough simultaneous players to fill three worlds. Still, this depends on how much everyone can compromise and stick to that compromise, and not whine about it on the server.

Mareeps
04-21-2012, 02:54 PM
I'm willing to compromise on anything, as I'll most likely participate in all of the servers.

Dudebro
04-21-2012, 03:21 PM
I don't think anyone is hung up on the idea of a pure vanilla server. I know I just want it to be survival, not creative. If you're gonna build something you have to find the materials and do it the normal way.

I think the challenge map world should be used for other things as well.

Once every two weeks I'd like to play a peaceful/survival based around the city construction challenge.

Here's what I want out of the second world:

1. Super Hostile events (Spellbound)
2. Parkour events
3. Adventure maps
4. Survival maps (Skyblock, 404)
5. City Construction
6. Creative
7. PvP
8. Spleef
9. Redstone Games (Bomberman, Cake Defender)
10. Ultra Hardcore (Only gold apples and potions refill health)

As for the survival world, I don't care as long as its not set to peaceful and we can mod it the way we want it.

2. Challenge maps like parkour maps, adventure maps, etc.

CatalystiCam

Let me ask something first. Now hosting multiworld, a few questions since I'm kind of inexperienced when it comes to multiworlds.

A: Can we still chat with one another when in the other worlds
B: Do the worlds host off the same ip, but different ports (ie: 1.234.567:1 and 1.234.567:2 for the other world)
C: does hosting multiworlds cut down our ability to host a certain amount of people? What I mean is that does having 2 worlds mean that each can only host 6 people at a time instead of the full 12

I want multiworlds for sure. I pretty much agree with Ten's last post. When it comes to challenge maps, they do not usually last as long as a regular world does. I know that from first hand experience that they either get stale once everything is done, or they have an ending. So having a world for hosting different challenge maps and/or creative would be cool.

Ideally, and this probably is far fetched to have 3, but I'd like a Creative world, a Survival world (with mods), and a challenge map world. My only problem with this is very minor though, I'd like our chat system to work between worlds. say when I'm on Survival and Ten's on creative, and Seahawk's on the challenge map, we can all still talk and see each others comments. I believe this is possible, I have had a little experience being on different servers with multiworlds actually, just haven't used them much.

I was intending the challenge map slot to be a world that is rotated out on a regular basis when they are finished, like Spellbound. However some of your ideas sound like they would be better off in a map that includes them all in a creative world.

That's my only concern, I don't think we have enough players to populate three worlds at once, and if the character count is limited to 12 at a time then I can't see all three worlds being worked on at once.

Two things I want:
1. Survival/general server that we play as a community like we have in the past.
2. Challenge maps like parkour maps, adventure maps, etc.

This is my plan so far, at the current cost projection.

*snip on hosting details*

I have no idea how the host is going to operate at this time, when I get some more information I'll let you know.

Also if anyone is doing research on good hosts please post them, especially regarding the earlier mentioned 80$ deal for 12 characters.

Well, what I have in mind is that a creative world be on in default and any events we host supersede it temporarily.

Maps like Spellbound are only going to be really used as a group effort anyways. There's really no point in leaving the Spellbound map up and running all day when you, Cam, Brawl, and I aren't playing it.

The way I'm envisioning my personal experience is me playing survival only when there's nothing interesting to me happening on the other map.

@Cam: Yes, there are ways to do cross-map chat. I've seen it done and have used it, but I do not know how it was set up.

They have good deals but unfortunately they have no SSD servers running in the USA. As the load for Minecraft is mostly I/O to the disk a fast drive is essential.

I forgot that it's the weekend, so my support ticket with Beastnode may not be answered until Monday.

---------- Post added 04-22-2012 at 05:02 AM ---------- Previous post was 04-21-2012 at 08:24 PM ----------

Got my response:

Support ticket response from an administrator:
Hello,
You can upload multiple worlds so you can select between them or you can install a multi-world plugin and run them all at one time and just teleport between them. Let us know if you have any other questions.

So it seems that the current server code built into Minecraft is for one world on a server at a time, although this map can be switched out at will.

It sounds like running multiple worlds simultaneously would consume too many resources anyways.

SO------

Running many worlds simultaneously seems out of the question on the current budget.

We can do this two ways:

Option 1. Set up a fixed schedule for what world is selected, switching out by day. For example (and this is just an example):

Monday - Survival
Tuesday - Creative
Wednesday - Survival
Thursday - Creative
Friday - Challenge Map (because more people will have dedicated time on weekends for this)
Saturday - Challenge Map
Sunday - User vote, can be survival, creative, or challenge map if necessary

Option 2. Ditch the creative world entirely, so that survival can be running all the time. Switch out for the challenge map when a consensus is made on what map to do and when.

I'd prefer #2 since it would mean less upkeep work for me, but maybe you have some other ideas.

Your thoughts please.

Kugyince

I'm thinking Survival by default and we set up a two week rotating schedule for events.

I can help by creating and upkeeping a public calendar so that people can easily see what's coming up when. I can also help with switching in and out maps if I'm shown how to do so.

Week A
Sunday: Survival
Monday: Survival Challenge (Skyblock, 404)
Tuesday: Survival
Wednesday: Creative
Thursday: Survival
Friday: Adventure/Parkour/Super Hostile
Saturday: Survival
-Move to week B-

Week B
Sunday: Spleef/PvP/Ultra Hardcore
Monday: City Construction
Tuesday: Survival
Wednesday: Creative
Thursday: Survival
Friday: Adventure/Parkour/Super Hostile
Saturday: Survival
-Move on to Week A-

I think with a two week schedule we can tweek things by how popular they are. Examples: Creative might be popular so we give it every Wednesday. PvP/Spleef isn't as popular so its done only every other Sunday.

And of course we only upload the special maps when the group playing is on, during the rest of the day is the survival map.

CatalystiCam
04-22-2012, 11:47 AM
I like both ideas though I'd rather keep it to a weekly schedule, but that's not a huge deal, 2 week schedules could work too.

I think just start out with the basic week plan, and like ten said tweak it whenever it's needed.

I would like some days to be creative though, and also what's city construction?

Switch out for the challenge map when a consensus is made on what map to do and when.I think this is the best option. Back when we had the RU server up we never had a ton of people on at the same time anyways. It would suck to have a whole day dedicated to some creative mode and no one is online that wants to use it.

Question for all. Anyone interested if I run a creative server for the next few days? I have some things I really want to make, and I just don't feel that I want them being in some offline world only I see, rather I want them as some bigger map many people are part of.

Anyways, I could run this creative server off my computer for a few days, then send the world file to seahawk to continue eventually on our creative days.

Also, for creative, should we do Superflat, or normal?

Superflat would allow for much taller structures, but not any land variation.

Normal would give us the normal landscapes, and let us still work with the land, mountains, oceans, etc.

Personally, I'm good with either, but I think I would probably rather the land variations.

When one door closes, another one opens... Well, not really. Somehow, miraculously, and randomly tried to fix my desktop for the bajillionth time, the one that's been broken all year... and it worked! I can play minecraft there again hopefully. I can even host a server off one, and play on the other. I think I repaired my laptop as well for the most part by restoring it to yesterday.

I wouldn't call fixing an old desktop that myself and a bunch of other people labelled "nearly impossible to fix" horrible luck, but yes I do generally :P

couldent you just wipe your drive and reinstall windows?

CatalystiCam

That's what I thought, but it took several attempts over several months. It did not want to be wiped clean. Hard to explain.

Really? I got the thing to boot and get a desktop and stuff, been installing all the essentials for it, but it's slow as hell on certain things and still blue screened a few times xD

You think it would fix that?

only if you have a windows disk, DBAN is like dropping a nuke in you harddrive, if theres anything you wanted in the pc it will be erradicated

I know of a good host for payed servers, minefold (http://www.minefold.com), and they give you 10 free hours a month (don't stack) but at the same time, it's a pure server. They plan on adding Bukkit soon, but not yet. I don't know if you can make superflat with it though, but I do know that you can get a sort of whitelist, where you have to approve people before hand to play.

I looked into it, but it looked like it would only work if I downloaded it to a cd or dvd. Too primitive to read DVD's, and I just used up my last blank cd this morning :-/

Found blank CD's. I knew we had some. I found 2 actually. Thanks katz, gonna try this out.

Also now that it's up, we need an official server inauguration to finalize the world.

Post a good time when we can do a mass login and kick this baby off. I will be out from May 5-10 at a conference so probably want to get this sometime this week.

We can log in and make our first hovels right?

Seahawk
04-29-2012, 12:47 AM
You can, but since nobody is playing in the dead of night, I might wait for another time to finalize the world so that everyone can be logged in at once and discuss plans for what you want to do.

The server was just beautiful. The view from the tallest mountain was simply incredible.

Praise KATZ for the wonderful seed generation. It was created by hitting random keys on the keyboard.

Well all I wanna do for now is just build a place kinda near spawn so I can start getting back into it. I haven't played much at all since the old server went down.

Seahawk
04-29-2012, 01:05 AM
You can play and build right now, but I'm not going to promise that the server won't be restarted when everyone is ready to play at the same time.

The server seed is just amazing from what I explored so far! and thanks for hosting, it is much appreciated.

At the very least I am planning on keeping that seed.

The seed is:

Well that's kinda annoying. I'd like to know for sure one way or another. I doubt we're gonna find a time when everyone can be on at once anyways.

Dammit guys cut me a break, the server has been up only 3 hours, everyone has different wants for the server, I can't please everyone when nobody is playing.

Don't worry about it hawk, it'll work out.

Anyways, I think it's safe to say most of you guys are on Eastern time, so can we all try to get on at maybe 1 pm Eastern time? I'm waking up just before 10 am (1 Eastern).

Dudebro

Whatever you guys do just hurry up and do it, I wanna start playing for real. I won't be home on sunday until after dinner time but don't wait around for me. I'd like to start setting up once I get home if possible.

Right now I'm just running around the map to see what I can find. So far lots of jagged hills/mountains and swiss cheese tunnels, awesome. I think I found the ocean too but I'm stuck in the ground waiting out the night.

---------- Post added at 03:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:54 AM ----------

I found lots more jagged hills, tons of ice and a jungle on the edge of the ocean.

Figured what would happen?

Cut him a bit of a break guys, servers around for a long time, just be patient.

No one's giving Seahawk a hard time or being impatient. We're just asking for the server log in which should take all of 10 seconds to share.

You people have no patience at all.

Not being impatient at all. Just want to play and I don't see the what the big secret is all about.

If I was home I would've PMed you the IP Tenser. SH said don't share it with anyone but from what I understood that doesn't apply to people like Tenser who are automatically whitelisted.

I think I might wanna hop on again, but I can't really dedicate any time right now though. I'll probably get all my minecraft stuff up to date this week sometime.
