Anyone here going to play it. I played d2 for like 8 years and had some ungodly hacked open b-net characters to duel with. I cannot wait for D3.

I so would, if only I had the money.

Blizzard made a mistake (in my eyes, anyway) by making the game online-only, as well as making it a monthly payment deal. I just hope it doesn't turn out like World of Warcraft - looks awesome, sounds awesome, ends up being decent. :face:

Worst comes to worst, I'll probably just end up replaying through D1 & D2, lol.

Where did you hear it's subscription? Everything I see points to it being like the other two, one time purchase. Also it's not online only. Single player is in there too, you just need to be connected to the internet to active according to wikipedia.

I can't wait for this game. I've been a big fan since the first game and Blizzard is a great company so the trend should continue. Once the game is released we should make a list of RU people playing and team up.

If you go to the Diablo 3 site they have some contests going on up until release. One is very easy to enter and you can win some in game bonus item. From what I can tell it's just an icon for your in game chat or something but they say it's only available before release so you might as well go for it. There's also real prizes for bigger winners and winners of the art contest.

Huh..

I could have sworn that was going to be the case with D3. I read it on Wikipedia, I believe.

Oh well. At least now I know I can actually play it! Now it's just the matter of getting the money and a decent CPU to run it on, lol. :disdain:

I might play it. I liked D2, so as long as it is a one time pay and my computer can run it I would probably buy it

They said they wanna make it accessible for lots of users and the specs wouldn't require a top of the line PC to run. I'm not sure of the specifics though.

oh man dont worry, it's just like installing any other game. They kind of hide the installer though, you gotta go into MANAGE MY GAMES, and it's under DIABLO 3 OPEN BETA INSTALLER. It's 40 megs. Grab that, sit back for an hour while the game downloads. It's done on Sunday so act fast :) If you got an sc2 account, just go to the same area where you download the sc2 client and stuff.

According to my friend who bought it at midnight, everything is done server side, even your characters are stored server side, and due to the numbers of people playing last night, even single player was lagging.

I want to play it, but having to always be online and the monthly subscription are deal breakers for me.
I'll just replay Diablo II.

SMASH
05-15-2012, 08:47 PM
There is no monthly subscription. You just have to have a constant internet connection.

It is no different than how diablo 2 managed characters. Where the character you play on closed battlenet was stored server side to prevent hacks.

Demon-Mask
05-15-2012, 08:50 PM
Constant internet connection is no good for single player.

SMASH
05-15-2012, 08:53 PM
That is true. I only want to play multiplayer.

I played diablo 2 for months before I played online. After I played online, I never played single player again.

Blizzard really should have had an offline single player. That was pretty stupid of them. They just want to capitalize on the auction house bit.

bearhawk72
05-15-2012, 08:54 PM
Apparently people crashed the servers trying to play today and Blizzard had to close Diablo's battlenet.

SMASH

I expected that. I knew their servers wouldn't take the initial release day. Kinda glad my copy didn't arrive yet just because of that reason.

Demon-Mask

Requiring constant online for single player is the deal breaker for me.
I guess my love of single player games puts me in the minority anymore.

Dudebro
05-15-2012, 10:49 PM
Besides their server going down right now what other reason could you have for needing to play this kind of game single player offline? I get that it's annoying that the option isn't there but really this game is meant to be played multiplayer, even if no one is in your game at the moment. Don't miss out on a fun game you might really like just because of some minor annoyance.

Btw I believe it's constantly online as an anti piracy measure, I don't think it has any other reason to do that.

Demon-Mask
05-15-2012, 10:58 PM
Always online is more than a minor annoyance. Here, I never know when the weather will knock out my internet connection or when we don't have enough money to pay the internet bill.
Furthermore, you don't get to decide whether I would like to play single player or not. I enjoyed the other two Diablos in single player, why would this one be any different? And, if I'm playing single player, there is no reason for me to need a constant internet connection. A start-up check would be sufficient.
If EA or anyone else, excluding Betheseda, did something like this, you'd be quite furious, I'd imagine.
Why should Blizzard be the exception, BS is BS, no matter how great the bull producing it may be.

I'll likely end up playing this game anyway, once the price drops a bit.

Dudebro
05-15-2012, 11:10 PM
My point is a game like Diablo is meant for online. Sure it can be played offline single player but you're only get half the experience. Once you beat the game you have very little else to do. Playing online with other people adds more with PvP, trading, increased difficulties, ect.

I do agree it sucks to require this but I would not be furious if other companies did it. I've accepted that it's a reality of modern gaming. Hopefully in a few years they'll come up with a better way but atm the choice is either put up with it or miss out on a game I'll enjoy playing.

Btw why did you exclude Bethesda? I'd be more mad if they did it because most of their games are known for being hardcore single player. Also I think EA already does this with their PC games.

Demon-Mask
05-15-2012, 11:17 PM
I brought up Betheseda because of your Mass Effect avatar. It was a casualty of convenience.
When I do play it, I will primarily play multiplayer, of course, but I like it when there is a single player to play for when there is no internet.
Whatever, I'll deal with it, if it's half as good as Diablo II, it'll be more than worth it.

Still gonna wait until price drops.
Of course, that might be a long time, Starcraft II is still at sixty dollars most places.

Dudebro
05-15-2012, 11:21 PM
Bioware makes Mass Effect. Amusingly I haven't been able to play ME3 for weeks now because of EA, which owns BW, requiring a log in check at start up. The files it needs to check got corrupted and now the game just freezes. How's that for annoying?

Watch for sales and you'll probably be able to get it relatively soon. The next expansion of SC2 is out soon so maybe they'll have a cross promotion then.

Demon-Mask
05-15-2012, 11:25 PM
How did I get them mixed up? I feel so dumb now.
Either way, if I see a physical copy of SC2 or Diablo III for forty dollars or so, I'll not hesitate to buy.
I don't know where I got Betheseda from. I must have intended to say Bioware, since my reasoning was Mass Effect.
But Betheseda doesn't even sound like Bioware.

Right now it's a toss up between Diablo III and Heroes of Ruin (3DS Diablo clone).

On one hand, HoR is portable, cheaper, and doesn't require online for the single-player experience.

On the other, Diablo is a proven concept, is out now, and I'll probably know more people that play it than HoR.

Btw I believe it's constantly online as an anti piracy measure, I don't think it has any other reason to do that.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with hacking. Think that was priority #1. Just read the battle.net EULA (they keep updating it too). "You promise not to move data from allocated memory used by this program ..." really esoteric stuff like that. The whole making bots to mine gold, selling accounts, making fake items, etc has always been a challenge for blizz.

When diablo 2 came out, there was 2 servers, one you can cheat on and another you weren't allowed too. Cheating has been a part of diablo since DUPING and GODLY PLATE OF WHALES ! lol

I'm not playing it right now because I'm waiting for all the casuals to get sick of it. Battle.net games are more SERVICE ish. I think the difference between assassins creed having always on drm and diablo is that once I beat assassins creed I won't play it over and over again. Diablo has replay value through the roof.

Anyway my 2 cents, dudebro isn't wrong I just think people are forgetting about how bad the hacking on the game has always been. Even for Starcraft Im happy they have anti hack stuff. Nothing worse then getting 6pooled and map hacked o_o

I don't think Fungus was being rude by saying that. DM was rude with how he replied to steven about it though. Let's not continue that discussion anymore ok?

@fungus- What do you mean about it being service ish?

I think the main reason they're so worried about hacking and stuff is because of the real money auction house that's coming soon. People would dupe and hack like crazy if there was real money to be made from it. Blizzard doesn't want to police that kind of thing so they're stepping out in front of it to nip it in the bud before it blooms out of control.

@DM- If you think your PC can run it I can send you a free pass code to try the game. It lets you play Act 1 for free and I believe you can keep what you do if you upgrade. Let me know in a PM if you want a code.

Sucks for the people that got that issue. I waited until a reasonable time to buy the game and start playing it so I didn't encounter that annoyance. What annoys me is so many cry babies gave the game bad reviews because of not being able to log on within hours of release. It's only one of the most anticipated PC games in recent history, no reason to suspect the servers might be over loaded right? Noobs.

Demon-Mask
05-18-2012, 05:47 PM
Yeah, they're just such cry babies because they spent their hard earned money on a game they couldn't play for quite some time.
So terrible.
I mean, when you buy a game, don't you want to play it right away, especially if you per-ordered and then waited in line at midnight at gamestop or whatever?
People buy games to be able to play them, not to have them not work.

I do agree that common sense says that you bolster your servers for the first few months after release. As things start to calm down is when you bring your servers back to normal.

It was a bad mistake on Blizzard's part but that shouldn't be the cause for negative reviews.

Dudebro
05-18-2012, 08:50 PM
@DM - This kind of thing happens with almost every major multiplayer game. The first couple days are laggy and unstable. Anyone expecting a flawless release is either stupid or they're newbs. I know I was in no rush to log on because I fully expected there to be issues like server downtime and lag. When I did log on there was like a half hour of downtime, that's it.

I went to metacritic and checked out a bunch of the ratings. It looked like 99% of the negative ratings were about the day 1 connection issues. These people are morons and I have no reason care about their feelings being hurt. Rating the game a zero because you and a billion other people tried to log on and couldn't for a few hours? Boo hoo.

@Tenser- I'm sure they did boost their servers. They had that free beta before release and it had tons of lag issues so they weren't unprepared. The anticipation was just huge and they were overwhelmed by the amount of people who actually bought it.

Demon-Mask
05-18-2012, 09:18 PM

Dudebro
05-18-2012, 09:20 PM
Of course people can be upset. My point is anyone with any sense would expect the servers to be log jammed. We're talking about Diablo 3. Everyone and their mother played D2. This game was bound to be overwhelmed the first few hours it's out. This is nothing new in online gaming.

Slime Slayer

I don't think giving the game a bad review because of it is right, but I do think Blizzard should have made the neccessary changes to avoid it, if possible that is. Some hardcore nerds probably went completly bananas trying to log on.

I think it's naive to assume Blizzard didn't try their best to prevent this. Servers crashing on the release of one of your biggest games is bad PR. To me it just shows how wildly popular the game is.

When I got the game I checked out their forums while it downloaded and the place was flooded with people crying about not being able to log in. People were demanding refunds and saying they were filing complaints with the BBB. This kind of thing is why I just lol at the people affected by it. The noobs make me not care.

Demon-Mask
05-18-2012, 09:32 PM
I'm with you on the reviews. There shouldn't have been bad reviews purely on the grounds of server troubles.
I just think that they could have feasibly made it so you could log on and just have it be laggy.
And that when people couldn't log on at all, they had a very good, very solid reason to be irate and upset.

Twilight Zone Opening THEME MUSIC 1962 Rod Serling - YouTube

Being a sys admin for a website that gets a million mysql queries in a little less then a couple of hours, I can only imagine what's happening at blizz. Pretty sure it wasn't one guy named Bob who forget to order more servers. I'm going to take a wild guess blizz leases some anycast services for speed (kind of like ru does with cloud front). One of their partners probably was unprepared and got hit hard. Not to mention the hordes of people who claimed to be ddosing the server from 4chan. So what, you got a bunch of servers, big deal. It's like really hardcore stuff sometimes. Our website is hosted on Amazon, and 2 weeks ago they had a harddrive failure. We have a ton of partners who need our website. It was just crazy for a couple of days trying to bring all that stuff up. And it's AMAZON, you know, a trusted brand. Basically the internet is on the verge of breaking 24/7, when you get down to the nitty gritty about how packets work, protocols, read all the rsa docs, it's completely amazing that the whole thing even works at all. It's like a lemon aid stand that over time converted to a walmart that still uses 12 year olds to squeeze the juice by hand.

persist, yeah for sure. When the doors open is just harsh. But who are we to dictate how people act ? We can only criticise, the horde will act how it wants.

This is exactly why I'm waiting. The same stuff happened for starcraft 2. Ton of noobs, weird glitches, server issues, imbalances. The lesson from this generation is to WAIT. Red ring ? No gaems ? iPhone Antenna ? Why people aren't aware of this when it comes to day 1 buys is beyond me. Who cares who is first anymore ? I'm not impressed if you get something 10 minutes before me anymore. It's not like someone shipped Secret of mana 2 from the back of a gamepro and cut out the wedges to play it on a north american snes pre internet era. We can all have the same things now when ever we want. Cool shirt, I'll buy one just like it.

Everyone standing in line for the COLLECTORS EDITION.
You really don't think it's going to be 100$ on ebay in 4 months ?

I like how people don't understand if you keep spamming the log in screen trying to get on, you're only making the problem worse.

That's why it's so funny, both the rage and the problems just kept multiplying.

Not that I know how their system works, but I'm guessing all the game data that is on the servers is what's doing it. They are probably using UDP instead of TCP (I spoke about this before), so whatever the packets the server can't handle it will automatically drop. It's probably just the sheer amount of processing that is going on that is doing it. You know when you accidentally open 40 firefox windows ? Basically that. A ddos attack would slow down the service, but it wouldn't cause an outtage like this. Going back to this whole "anycast" thing, you can't just point at one server because it's spread out everywhere. Like we wouldn't be able to take down RU in a ddos attack because it's cached all over the globe (cloudfire). Like when anon said they were going to take down the internet, lol yeah right.

ANY CAST

Blizz or whoever is running the servers, probably didn't expect this amount of processing power needed. When they did the beta, they might of used that data to say "well 10,000 played that beta and it required X amount of processing power. So if we have 1 million preorders and expect 2 million non preorder sales, then multiply X by 3 million and set up that many servers". Maybe it sold way more then expected, who knows man.

It cost a load of money to create this infrastructure, maybe it was hard to convince kotick ;P

I hate to use a meme, but one does not simply build a data center. It's completely I N S A N E that we get everything we want from the internet so quickly. It's just completely unbelievable at times.

If the AI is running off the server and not the users PC (I think I read that somewhere) lol @ blizz. That's a lot of money dude. The server load per user must be a huge chunk. Anyway I didn't mean to go all egghead on you guys just though I'd shed some light.

So, the fact that they keep EVERYTHING on the server is what's slowing everyone down?
So, it is pretty much Blizzard's fault?

Seriously, that was a dumb move.

I think it's that in this case a miss calculation takes a while to fix. It's not like getting green peppers on your pizza by mistake. It's like "Oh we were off by a margin of 1.2. Let's drop $400,000 on a temporary replacement, deploy 7000 instances of our servers, configure everything, contact x,y, and z and make sure our migration is compatible with their stuff and do this in , oh, 6 hours at 2 am with 7 guys". This isn't hotdog stand calculation, it's in magnitudes so large that the time to correct them isn't just serving another beer because it wasn't what the customer ordered.

Don't buy things at launch ;)

I'm just defending the guy who's getting yelled at in the server room, I know that feel.

I don't buy things at launch.
I don't buy games for more than forty dollars.
I don't like buying things at launch because I don't enjoy playing games while everyone else is. I'd rather the ending be spoiled while I'm not playing at all than the ending be spoiled while I'm just about there.

It's funny you mention that. I just got done playing that part and I thought it was him too. They really need to update the IMDB page for this game it's not very helpful at all.

So you're playing and you haven't invited me yet? What's your battletag?

So anyone get hacked yet? Reports are pilling up apparently, even for people who only play single player, so much for drm preventing hackers. Apparently they've also figured out how to duplicate items, simply disconecting halfway through uploading an item in the auction house, will put it in the auction house aswell as keep it in your inventory. Problem is the auction house uses real money.

I don't know first hand what of the above is factual, but there are several sources reporting it.

The only people I know playing are my brother and I and so far we're ok. We're still below level 30 though so we're probably not prime targets.

Where did you read about the duping thing? That topic you linked seems to only talk about the rumors of hacked accounts. I didn't read every post though since there was some annoying arguing. Btw the real money auction house isn't up, it's projected for around 5/29. They'll probably push it back now that this happened.

Someone in that topic had a good point. It's better this happens now so they can deal with it early and before people have big accounts.

My internet is finicky about random sites that it wont load at certain times of day, I can't read the article now but I think this talks about it:

Nah that topic is just some guy worried about it. From the looks of it the items are just store bought and someone is trying to make some profit off them.

So why are you reading the diablo forums anyways? I have the game and I'm not even reading it.

Ok well I guess the better question is where did you hear about this in the first place?

My brother got the game the other day and we've been burning through and having a blast. We both go OCD about magic find % on our gear so we're finding lots of good stuff already. I got my first legendary item tonight but it wasn't useful for me so I gave it to him. I'm having a lot of fun with monk and it seems to work very well with him as witch doctor. Good times.

1. Anyway to get a discount? For PC.
2. Anything else very similar but better we should get instead?
3. Anyone here still playing?

Anything else very similar but better we should get instead?https://www.pathofexile.com/

Path of Exile on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/238960/)

It's completely free and it's supported by optional cosmetics and some storage expanders. It has a real skill tree that requires thought and has consequences if you screw it up. Compare to Diablo where you can choose your skills at any time and essentially every Monk/Barbarian/ect is the same except for what gear you're wearing. Some people love that but to me and lots of other people it's a deal breaker, turning things super casual.

The only possible roadblock for PoE is server latency. Because it's a small team and they're from New Zealand their servers tend to suck for a lot of people. I don't have much trouble but my connections speed is very good and stable. You'd wanna test it out before totally committing to it(but it's free so only time would be lost right?)

If you guys end up playing let me know and I'll invite you to the RU guild I made. It's pretty pathetic because I'm the only active member but I have a bunch of items/gems you can have to test things out.

Anyone here still playing?I quit after beating the game twice and realizing it wasn't gonna get any better and that none of my choices mattered. Before I found PoE I thought Blizzard killed the genre by making it a casual console port.

Path of Exile is pretty Awesome! I love how big the skill tree is, it gives the game mass variety on how to build your character.

Dudebro

And they are constantly updated and tweaking it so you get a free skill tree reset every couple months or so.
