Indeed. I have Icewind Dale II, but not from GoG. That's a really good game for those interested in AD&D-style rules and storylines. I've yet to play the first part but I really don't think it matters as far as understanding the game is concerned.

Strategy RPG + too dark to see anything + 15 minutes to figure out how to attack + 40 minutes of wandering around aimlessly in a cave killing rats = uninstalled

Too dark to see anything? Maybe in the few caves or the very start of the game. Most fighting takes place in the desert/towns/vaults and it is very well lit. Did you check options for brightness btw?

Figuring out how to attack could've been solved by just asking one of us. Don't most RPGs start off with you killing rats? Either way it sounds like you got a quest to kill a rat infestation, it's a small part of the game.

No, I was suppose to visit another vault because the water purifier was broken. I had no idea how to find where I was suppose to go and had very low health since a rat almost killed me as I figured out how to attack.

My monitor brightness is all the way up by default. It's a weird but very frustrating pet peeve of mine that I hate it when things are too dark or blend in too much in games and movies. Oddly it's why I love caving in Minecraft because you're lighting it up.

No matter, I really dislike strategy RPGs in general. I gave it a try but meh, way too slow for me. Not my thing. I uninstalled it and I'll try a different game on GOG.

I'm not trying to convince you to give it another shot I'm just clarifying so other people don't think it's a bad game, it's really not.

The purifier quest is the main one. You're supposed to find your way to a town nearby for more info. The game doesn't give you directions or anything because it's supposed to be about survival and figuring it out on your own. If you take too long the game ends(there's a patch that disables that though, thankfully).

I understand your pet peeve and I share it, although not to the same degree obviously. If I remember right FO was ok for me because when you're in combat enemies are outlined so you can't miss them.

It's definitely not a fast paced game. Once you get further though it picks up - better weapons and faster travel.

Fallout is a bad game in my opinion but that should in no way discourage others from trying it, unless their tastes in games line up pretty straightforward with mine, of course. I think everyone here is strong willed enough to make decisions on their own and not base them solely off of my experience.

I'm trying Lure of the Temptress right now. It's half-way decent, especially if you enjoy 80's 'mature game' humor. I'm only about 30 minutes in but it seems decent enough and has yet to make me struggle with any illogical puzzle solutions that plagued the adventure genre during that time period.

From what I read Lure was there first venture into that genre and it wasn't so great. The others (besides Teen Agent) are supposed to be much better.

I'm about 3 hours into FO, and many of the problems that Ten described almost turned me off to it. A simple, in game tutorial would have solved a lot of the problem. The learning curve of how to equip stuff, enter combat mode, talk to people is a huge turnoff, but once you get that, the pacing picks up...a little. It drives me nuts about how it takes forever to walk around in towns and such.

I know there are the purist groups out there (No Mutants Allowed is the big one) that hate on FO 3 and NV, but I totally prefer those. For two primary reasons, first, the pacing, and second, everything is real time. The turn based crap kills me.

Alright, so I played for 10 minutes while I had lunch before I remembered I should study for a couple of exams. I still have to study but I'm very intrigued by the game since it seems like my kind of game, but I'm petrified of messing it up by wasting all my bullets of something like that. If you're going to traverse the waste lands, make sure you plan out your journey. You don't want to double back if you don't have to.

The first fallout game has a time limit(unless this version includes the patch?) so don't sweat it too much, you probably won't beat it on your first try. Just get used to the combat and learn where towns/quests are. I suggest you make your character very intelligent, gives you more skill points at level up. If I remember right pistols are easy to find and keep ammo for. You could go for melee weapons to save money and time but then you have to get up close. You could keep a weapon for certain enemies like scorpions who close the distance anyways. It's been a while so that's all I can think of atm.

Still unsure if there is a patch for more or unlimited time, but I did do the quest that extends the amount of time to find the water chip for the vault.

I just looked it up and apparently there is no patch to remove the Water Chip time limit. In order to get more time you have to do what Jim said and buy more time from the water merchant at The Hub town(100 more days). The patch I was thinking of only removes the timer on a mutant attack on the home village, if I remember right.
