Sectioned? What does that mean?

I call Tetris and Columns and all other similar games Drop games.

Strategy/Turn-Based - Advanced Wars, Venus Wars, Romance of the Three Kingdoms

RPG/Turn-Based - Shining Force

Board/Party Games - Monopoly, Chess, Darts, Mario Party

Matching - Mahjong

Interactive Movie - Space Ace, Dragon's Lair

Casino/Cards - Obvious

Horror - ??

Pinball - Crueball, Sonic Spinball

I don't think your simulation examples are good. Budokan, Civilization, F-15 Strike Eagle. Rampart is Strategy/Shooter/Real-Time/Drop/Awesome

Adult - Bubble Bath Babes (it is a clone of Mermaids of Atlantis (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/NES/Mermaids-of-Atlantis.php)), Leisure Suit Larry

Managerial - Aerobiz, SimCity, Populus (also sometimes classified as God)

Cyberpunk - Shadowrun (I think this genre is too narrow to be a real genre)

can something be platform and strategy?

Sure, that is one of my favorite genres. But it is rare. Moai Kun (http://www.retrouprising.com/play/NES/Moai-Kun.php), Lemmings (http://www.retrouprising.com/index.php?action=arcade&name=lemmings), The Lost Vikings and I think Out of This World (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out_of_This_World) and Prince of Persia (http://www.retrouprising.com/index.php?action=arcade&name=persia) would be in this category too.

Sectioned? What does that mean?

Your normal, manually scrolling platformer that has stages/areas/world/sectors that you must go through in a specific order one at a time and don't return to. SMB1, Alex Kidd, Sonic, etc...

Pinball - Crueball, Sonic Spinball
Rhythm - Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero

Not sure about these.

I'd say that rhythm games are unique enough to merit their own genre. Pinball, on the other hand, is really difficult to classify.

Kugyince

If pressed I'd say Rhythem would be Strategy/Action and Pinball could be Strategy/Card & Board

what would u consider pokemon?

Kugyince
03-20-2008, 10:33 AM
While technically it could fit any of the three RPG genres there might be enough of these to merit their own genre; RPG/Raising maybe?

RPG/Collectable/Turn battle

Call me out of the loop here Tenser, but what is it we are actually doing in this thread?
Are we just naming games that are hard to categorize, cause I'm pretty sure you got that down for the most part.

Tagen

I think rhythm has it's own genre.

Also, Survival Horror- Resident Evil (Gaiden), Sweet Home

Kong
03-20-2008, 03:30 PM
@Tenser: I agree. Most of the ones in my first post were themes and not genres.

@Tagen: Survival Horror would be a theme and themes should get their own topic.

@Kraemer: Wow all of DDQ is coming back at once. Welcome back. Hope you stay around this time. This topic is for defining genres. The games mentioned should mostly be archetypal examples. Perfect fits.

This is the "second attempt" because the first one turned into 8 pages of off-topic arguing and was locked.

I think rhythm should get it's own genre. And not fall under strategy. What strategy do you use in those games?

Tamagotchi, Dogz, Petz etc might should get their own genre but I am sure that Tenser will say they are simulation or something.

I think pinball might should get it's own or be Sports/Pinball. I know, not much of a sport but it fits there better than other places.

oasis
03-20-2008, 03:49 PM
pinball as well could fit under simulation??

Kugyince
03-20-2008, 05:03 PM
So here's a few more we can add to the list:

RPG/Collectable - Pokemon, Azure Blue
(Maybe by doing this we can combine RPG/Jap & RPG/Western into RPG/Classic?)

Interactive Fiction - (Though these aren't "video games")

Pinball can go under Sports/Pinball but I kind of like Platform/Arcade or Strategy/Card&Board. Any suggestions? Maybe we need an Action/Misc genre for Rhythem and Pinball and what not?

Tamagotchi, Dogz, Petz etc might should get their own genre but I am sure that Tenser will say they are simulation Strategy/Simulation ;D

Kong
03-20-2008, 06:13 PM
I will probably try to use these to sort out the games here eventually.

I think adding some additional categories would be helpful. Example both Final Fantasy and and Shining Force are Japanese Style RPGs but they aren't much alike. Dragon Warrior is more like Final Fantasy than Shining Force is. For SF, I think RPG/Tactical and replacing Western and Japanese with something else more descriptive would be helpful I think.

Usefull link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_genres)

Tenser, WikiPedia classifies Zelda as an Action/Adventure. I am assuming you are classifying it as RPG/Adventure?

I consider IF to be video games (electronic games) anyways I think the point of the topic is game genres as they relate to Retro Uprising and so interactive fiction would stay on the list whether they are video or not.

And was there agreement on Platform/Strategy for Moai Kun, Lemmings, The Lost Vikings, Out of This World and Prince of Persia.

Kugyince
03-20-2008, 06:51 PM
Yeah, Zelda I would be RPG/Adventure while Zelda II would be Platform/Adventure.

I don't like the Western/Japanese either. RPG/Classic? I don't know about the RPG/Tactical though. It kind of toes the line of strategy. Best to keep things broad and simple.

you know all you have to do is just be friendly and helpful around here. You just came in and started stuff, thats why there was almost a World War 3. Just move on from that incident stay if you wish, we are a mature group so i dont think we would hold grudges.

anyways... Tenser how is Zelda 1 a RPG? i would just call it an adventure.

Tagen

Zelda I is action/adventure and Zelda II is RPG/Platform or RPG/Adventure.

Zelda I has very few RPG elements whereas Zelda II has a lot.

Kugyince
03-21-2008, 02:13 AM
Action/Adventure we're renaming to RPG/Adventure. The reasoning behind this is that the majority of uninformed gamers call Zelda 1 an RPG. It's even listed as one on gamefaqs.

Also, if you're considering "RPG elements" as standard things and not what it actually means than Zelda 1 has them. A measure of health where you can raise its maximum, armor and weapons that can be upgraded by finding/puchasing better ones.

Zelda is deff an adventure series, it's all about exploration and discovery no doubt. tLoZ and aLttP are much more like SoM, IoG and Crystalis. RPG/Adventure.

Zelda II is also an adventure but it's also a platform game. Like battle of olympus, metroid and clash at demonhead its a platform/adventure.

The idea here is to get as few genres as possible. Broad, encompassing genres.

Kong
03-21-2008, 09:15 AM
Tagen, while you are technically right, I agree with this.

Action/Adventure we're renaming to RPG/Adventure. The reasoning behind this is that the majority of uninformed gamers call Zelda 1 an RPG.

I like RPG/Classic better than Western / Japanese. But what defines it as classic? What is the difference in RPG/Modern?

Kraemer
03-21-2008, 11:36 AM
Both RPG/Western and RPG/Japanese are confusing to me. An RPG is an RPG no matter what side of the world it was made or what the setting is. There is no other genres that are sectioned by Western and Japanese. They should just be RPG's; the only way I can see RPG/Western and RPG/Japanese working is if the whole game is in Japanese so you can give the people playing it a heads-up, but that wouldn't qualify for a genre, thats a language.

ZedIsDead
03-21-2008, 12:26 PM
I think RPG/Classic and RPG/Modern are pointless. There isn't too much difference between the classics and the new stuff, basically it's just bells and whistles and pretty graphics. Not to mention this is Retro Uprising. Also, I don't believe games such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Shining Force are really RPGs. Sure, you gain levels, but does that automatically make a game an RPG? They play like strategy games and should be treated as such. I guess you could call them Strategy/RPG, but this is about having as few categories as reasonably possible.

bathomas28
03-21-2008, 09:00 PM
this topic is kinda confusing ???

Kugyince
03-21-2008, 10:34 PM
Okay first off.

@ninjatiamat: No one said anything about an RPG/modern genre. I merely suggested using that terminology as a combined genre instead of seperating RPG's into western and japanese playing styles. Please read the posts more carefully.

Next...
@Kreamer: You're a bright boy, why am I explaining this to you? A western rpg and a japanese rpg having absolutely nothing to do with where it was produced. It's about what style of rpg it is. Japanese style RPGs can and are produced in the states and vice versa. Curious what the differences are? Google or Wiki it, I'm not going to bother explaining it so people can just glance over it and not understand anyways. The reason why I suggested combining them is to avoid this confusion.

An RPG:
A classic RPG centers around the development of its role characters. The player is asked to make sometimes difficult, often strategic choices in the character design.

Examples of what is and isn't an RPG:
FFVI (a.k.a. FFIIIus)
FFVI is a perfect RPG. You have a group of characters that at many time are allowed to choose who you bring with you. You have complete control over who learns what magic and when. There are a LOT of optional quests and even half of the main ones can be done in an order you choose. Even gear and equipment is not "this sword is clearly better than that sword". Are you going to turn Edgar into a dragoon, mage, or focus on tools? Are you going to rig slot, offering or imp Setzer? If I Wind God Gau than I can't build a Psycho Cyan...

A Link to the Past
NOT AN RPG BUT AN ADVENTURE BUT WE ARE CALLING ALL ACTION/ADVENTURES RPG/ADVENTURES INSTEAD!!!
Anyways, in Zelda, even though you may do some levels out of order most items found in earlier levels are required to finish later ones. There's also no real decision in gear. There's no drawback from going from green mail to blue mail and etc... Zelda is about exploring and trying new things in different places. That's an adventure.

The differences between RPG/Classic (diff name?) and RPG/Adventure have nothing to do with combat style. Think about it, Dragon Warrior I is an adventure even though it has that turn-based fight/spell/item/run system going for it...
