Everybody has one. That mythical beast that always eludes you...or in this case, that one retro title that you always wanted to beat straight up. No passwords, no codes, no game genie, and definatly no ROM save states. That one title were it was mano e mano. And the game always won...

What was your unicorn? For me, it was Mega Man X, Battletoads, and UN Squadren

I've got alot of them, I refer to them as "nemesis's". Off the top of my head:
Rygar (nes): I've played the first 3/4 of the game 30 times.
Clash at Demonhead (nes): Same story, played the first half a bunch of times, for some reason I find it brutally hard, but it's not known for it's difficulty.
Megaman X4 (ps): Tried to beat Sigma about 50 times before I gave up.
1945k3 (arc): Made it to the last boss a half dozen times.
Destiny of an Emporer (nes): Last boss blasted my head off, and I was looking at at least 2 hours of grinding, and said forget it.

A good ending in S.O.S.

It only takes one random boat rotation or AI idiocy to cut down your 50 minute progress back to nothing.

dude there is almost no answer to this question because alot of the old games r so hard that u cant even come close to beating em...... there were quite a few for me ranging from nintendo to at least snes...... 2 many 2 name....especially if u were young playin them early games... there were no guidelines cheats walkthroughs....INTERNET... dude we had game genie and that was too easy lol...there r games that i still cant beat that i played as a kid...old school games r a lot harder than any of the ish we have nowadays...games now look cool but as for strategy and actually having to figure it out?? there is none

When I was a youngster I really wanted to beat chip & Dale but I never did. Fast forward 20 years. I don't care enough to try. Now that you brought it up though I'm going to my parents house digging it out of the attic and giving her a whirl.

I always wanted to be Star Tropics. It's not because it was too difficult for me, it's just that when I got to the part where you needed to input a password that you could only get from the booklet inside the box...I found that my mom had tossed it out with the trash. Box art and all it's contents :( There was no internet readily available for me at the time and I didn't work so I couldn't subscribe to any of those game magazines. And even if I did, I would probably need a specific one to get that code. Years past and I stopped playing as much once I discovered chicks and what they could do to me when we're alone. Fast forward another 10 years and here I am on Retro Uprising playing games again. I think I'll give ST another go thanks to this thread. You the man Jimboner!:bye:

@ Warghoul, Chip and Dale wwas a huge pain for me. There was a boss where you had to hit him with a certain colored ball...and I had a black and white tv. Took multiple, 30 minute attempts to finally guess right. Had the same problem with Fester's Quest.

@ Ten, I'm glad Capcom was proud of the 1 meg of memory on that game.

That used to be mine, until I finally beat it a few years ago.

They key to the flying stages is actually in the exploration area. You need to explore EVERYWHERE before a gate(sometimes even skipping it temporarily) to find all the weapon, gun, and shield powerups.

After that it's just knowing when/what weapons to use to clear the screen when all hell breaks loose(which it does constantly in the later flying stages)

Mine is Adventure Island. My dad and I used to put hours upon hours into it but could never beat it.

I can get to world 7 pretty easily now but then I just get stuck as the platforming gets ridiculous(ie platforms that fall as soon as you step on them requiring precision jumps while bats fly at you)

Forgot about that one until you mentioned it. Game is nearly impossible to unlock everything in. The most I could ever do is beat Saphirre cup on Master.

@BH- I think you underestimate my lack of skills in those shooter games. I tend to fumble and get hit by really stupid stuff.

Super Empire Strikes Back - I don't see myself beating this one.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - I couldn't get past the fourth stage when I was a kid. Now, I'm quite a bit better, but I still can't beat it... yet.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - I pick up the game, make a little progress, and then put it aside. I still haven't gotten around to finishing it off.

EDIT: Almost forgot Super Metroid!

Super Metroid is awesome! I used to get lost and confused all the time in that game. That's what made it so fun for me.
By now, I've memorized every item location and pulled off most of the best glitches in the game. It makes me want to play it for the first time all over again so I can relive the fun of getting lost and cunfused.
(Sorry, I couldn't help myself. :})

I remember buying it new with Super Bomberman for 160 bucks, I never managed to 100% it, I was always missing one missle or bomb or whatever, I searched that game high and low, and till this day am still unsure of the location of the missising item.

Yes, I know. The same phenomenon will no doubt be apparent twenty years from now with modern products, and I'm sure I'm also not adjusted to Canadian inflation. I guess I was just overcome by my own limited view making it absurd.

Anyways, Castlevania III is also something I need to throw in, if not after Brawl. I never did beat Dracula in his second form...

WHAT?! That's rediculous. Was that in yen? I don't recall ever paying more that 30 or 40 bucks for a new SNES game.

I think Bomberman might have been a little extra since it came with the multi-tap.

I would never complain about vg prices though, when you think of it they are some of the cheapest things you can buy based on how much you get out of them, you can take your gf/wife/buddy out to a movie and end up paying more than a new game.

Bump

So, for the nostalgic lulz, I went through TLOZ first quest...then I got to thinking, I never did beat the 2nd quest. So, any suggestions? Tips, pointers? I'm going to make an honest go of it, no faq's or walkthroughs.

Mine right now is Professional Mode Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Variables increase with that difficulty you can't assume and go on the same path, and you definitely can't stick with the dagger the whole run.

Game I've always wanted to complete but I never sit down to do it? Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, the game is so long, holy mother of god.

One day I'm going to sit down and do a full Point world record on the World of adventure starring mickey mouse on SNES, the music should've been orchestrated. whoever decided not to orchestrate it is an idiot, probably top 20 old school soundtracks of all time.

Question was hard for me to answer, because I'm a huge completionist, if I played it when i was a kid I beat it. I wasn't "the wizard" but I was probably as close as you got to being him as far as I knew, I was the only kid on my block that essentially rented games to beat them and bring them back completed in 2-3 days. I didn't have nintendo power to help me and I was just casual.

Startropics brings me back, I played with a guy I knew named Josh. He couldn't get past the first few stages and I was blazing through the game, and we got stuck with the passcode. I was like "WTF Josh, we didn't find anything that tells us any information like this, what do we do?" and we figured it out, dipped the page in water and was like, "Holy shit brah, is this new age gaming?!?!?!?".

Rygar (nes): I've played the first 3/4 of the game 30 times.

I got to the last boss yesterday. I had my bro on his iPad directing me through some stuff. But honestly, the game needs a walk through. It's too open world for that type of shit. But yeah, made it to the last boss, good step in the eventual conquering of my nemesis.

From what I can think of right now it would be Bubble Bobble, Pang and Super Pang. Pang! 3 used to be on this list too, but recently I managed to actually beat the game. I should still beat it properly some time though, playing through all 50 levels...
