Unless you live in a cave, Metal Gear is a name that most of us have heard of. Released in 1987 by Konami for the MSX2 in Japan and parts of Europe, Metal Gear is considered the pioneer of the espionage genre and was also the first game designed by Hideo Kojima. However, the watered down version ported to the NES was done so without Kojima's involvement. (It's rumored that was hidding in a box.)

I can sneak up behind you inside a box and kill you.

Originally, Kojima wanted to create a military action game but had to change his approach due to the limited technology which caused the game to lag when too many projectiles and enemies were on screen. That's when he switched to the avoiding capture and sneak past the enemies theme.

The main character is, Snake, a member of the super elite and ultra top secret black ops group not officially known as "Fox-Hound." You start off the game by parachuting out of a plane (obviously) into a jungle in South America. As soon as you land, you recieve a Codec call from Big Boss, who begins to breif you on your mission. Something that probably should have been done before you jumped out of the freakin plane. Once you've been told your mission, you move to the next scene where you hear an enemy mercenary yell, "I FEEL ASLEEP!!", just before taking a nice siesta. So Snake now commences to beat the living snot out of his passed out foe with his bare hands, making one wonder why the hell he doesn't have any weapons or equiptment... Well that's because Snake is a real man! And real men find their own weapons and equiptment! Also, it's sort of a major part of the game in order to progress and complete the mission.

Other aspects of the game include rescuing a bunch of hostages, including your captured comrade, Grey Fox, who are scattered around in different locations. Collecting information on the Metal Gear weapon and of course fighting off enemies including boss battles. You have a menu screen where you can switch weapons and equiptment, including some cigarettes, and also your trusty Codec communicator for audio assisstance on what you need to do next. But due to the bad translations in the game, the Codec help can be confusing and not very helpful at times.

Metal Gear has the potential to be a very long game topped off with some difficult bosses and plain old frustration because you accidently walked in on a boss when you still aren't ready. Luckily the game has a password system so you can go back and try again. You must really enjoy torturing yourself huh?

Graphics are well done for an NES game of it's time with a rich background and good pixel characters. The music is decent, changing from place to place, but could be a bit boring after a while.

Reception for the game in the US was a success, and managed to climp up to the 104th spot in Nintendo Power's Top 200 Games List. The box cover is without a doubt very memorable and is a pure coincident that it looks like Kyle Reese posing with a gun.

Also pure coincidence
