It's that time of year again when we give props to the best of the best of RU. You have one week to put in your nominations for each of the categories. Keep in mind that these awards are for 2011 only.
Credit to Seahawk for writing the award descriptions.

Best Gamer - This is, in your opinion, the best overall game player for the year, whether he/she consistently placed high scores, or beat hard games,
this player was a force to be reckoned with in the arcade in 2011.

Best Mod - This is the moderator who you think was the most helpful, who you could count on to help you solve your problems the most.

Trophy Thief - This is the player who consistently steals trophies from you and everyone else, who you expect to find the PM from saying "Your score was beaten by XXX".

Trophy Defender - Opposite of a trophy thief, this is a player who's score you keep on beating, only to have him/her come back and post a higher score constantly.

Best Forum Participant - This is the user who you think made the forums
the most entertaining and lively.

Best Newcomer: The new member (their first post must be in 2011) who you think made the biggest positive impact to the RU forums or the arcade.

Retro Uprising All Star - To the member whose contributions in the arcade, forums, and chat room have made RU a better place. This person is the Sean Connery of RU, they set the gold standard in skills, wit, sportsmanship, and intellect.

Most Impressive Mastery - This is the player who beat that game that you thought couldn't be beat, but then someone did it anyways, sending your jaw dropping to the floor.

Most Impressive Score - This is the high score that you think is the most impressive overall for the year, a score that in your opinion will stand for a very long time.

Yes. We actually need to make nominations for this to work. Also, if you nominate someone, it would be great if you let them know that they are being nominated (this helps to get the word out and to let them know they are being nominated.

On a side note, we should probably keep the number of nominees to at a max of 5 to keep things simple. If we have more than five people up for nominations, we should take into account how many nominations each one has and include the top five only.

@ ninjatiamat: if you need some help with this, I'll be glad to lend you a hand or two.

I'm guessing previous year's category winners are still eligable to win again?

Best Gamer - Elrod21 - Held on to top spot for 95% of the year and increased his trophy haul massively. Top man and top player on a variety of genres.

Tails - Holds all 3 highscore assassin badges and has the most Masteries to date - Incredible for one so young!

Special mentions for Seahawk and Agnostic79 - They've still got it!

Best Mod - Jozman3000 - The amount of work this guy does behind the scenes to keep things ticking over is unbelievable. Shows nearly everyday how much he loves this site with his work ethic. Top man.

Trophy Thief - Elrod21 - Takes trophies for fun just to increase arcade activity. The hard part is getting them back!

Trophy Defender - Agnostic79 - Try taking one and see........!

Best Forum Participant - Dudebro' / stevencassidy13 - Always got an opinion and both care greatly about the site. The forums would be far poorer without them.

Best Newcomer: - JoshDonow aka ACCardShark's Channel - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/ACCardShark) Stuck his neck out and gave the site a brilliant plug via his youtube channel. Happily participates in the arcade, submits masteries and competes in tournaments. A credit to the site.

Barra - Smashed Galaga! An Unbelievably talented W.R. holding gamer. Has embraced all things R.U. without acting like "Mr hotshot". Has also encouraged many to join in the fun here. long may it continue.

Retro Uprising All Star - Jozman3000 for all the things mentioned above in the Best Mod section. Joz also captained a team at the start of the year. Actively encourages people to get involved in competition, runs R.U.'s Game Club and helps run R.U's facebook page.http://www.facebook.com/pages/Retro-Uprising/177213794556 (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Retro-Uprising/177213794556)
Also finds time to compete in the arcade and voice his opinions in the forum. A true R.U. God!

Most Impressive Mastery - Barra - Galaga coin op. Seahawk - 1942 coin op

Agreed.

@ChrisP: Yes, you may nominate multiple people for each category.

@Josephjo: Previous winners are again eligible.

Best Gamer
Elrod - for holding the number one spot on the trophy count most of the year and well above 100+ trophies more than number two WB.
Tails - is competitve (when he likes a game) but simply is all over the place when it comes to mastering games.
Agnostic - one serious bad dude who's good at just about everything. Really difficult to take his gold and even more difficult to keep yours. (if he really tried, he could just knock Elrod off the hill)
Seahawk - The Lord of the Skies. SH holds probably the most difficult shooter trophies to take and has mastered multiple arcade shooter which is no easy feat. He's been quiet for a while now, but he's still around sharpening his skills. He's also superb at Tetris type games and other puzzle games.

Best Mod
Tails - he does tons of recruiting to bring in new faces and is very active with verifying scores.
Jojo - very active with clearing out the score submissions and did that super awesome interview with Kong's daddy, Hank Chien.

Trophy Thief
Revj - I literally had to delete around 30 PMs from this guy in the span of around a month and a half. To top it off, I've taken some back only to have him take them back once more. A solid player.
Agnostic - YOU TOOK MY TMNT ARCADE TROPHY :'( and some other stuff throughout the year.

Trophy Defender
Fogelmir - This guy has been in the shadows for a while now, but I'm yet to keep a single trophy of his. He is tenacious when it comes to his booty.

Best Forum Participant
Dudebro - why you always get nominated for this? This guy posts so much, he's going to need a server just to hold all his posts one day.

I'm sure there are other worthy participants, but I don't frequent the forums like I used to and DB is the only one I usually see in just about every single forum.

Best Noob
Alohaex - our fun loving Hawaiian. He's a really nice guy that brings a nice touch to the forums. He's had problems with his connection so he hasn't been around as often as he'd like.
Barra - a super gamer with a humble soul. He also let some other super friends in on the RU fun and let us know about a sweet WolfMAME contest hosted by TW.
Joshdonow - a solid player with a sweet youtube channel. Active in the forums and games.
TheGuardian - for a guy who hardly talks, he's managed to silently be promoted to Game Mod with his honesty and willingness to help out.

RU Allstar
This one was really tough. I'm going to go with Jojo (this has nothing to do with him nominating me) for being a great overall gamer, active with tournaments and competing in games while modding scores, and for talking futbol with me when no one else cares. A great asset to the site and would sorely be missed.

I didn't really care for it when you beat me for it. That and well, games get lost here and it takes a while for someone to find an odd game that isn't very well known.

A true R.U. God!

Actually, I might be wrong here. Still, basically identical is a bit vague on which you would differ from.

Best Mod - Has to be Dudebro. He might think I am posting this as a pity but I am not. Whenever an issue arises and I need to talk to someone, mod issue or not. I go to him. He is always there and always willing to help. Thank you Dudebro, for everything.

Elrod as well, can't believe people overlooked him.

Trophy Thief - I'd say Kong, but we usually banter back and forth recently in games. Thanks to DB's post I realized I goofed o.o So gotta say I dunno who to say for this.

Trophy Defender - Agnostic. No one else can beat his defending.

Best Forum Participant - Robot xD I dunno.

Best Newcomer: Barra, it's nice to see him jump feet first into RU.

Retro Uprising All Star - Dudebro hands down.

Most Impressive Mastery - Agnostic TMNT. Was cool of him to take my opinion and just go demolish the game.

Most Impressive Score - Agnostic TMNT again.

He might think I am posting this as a pityYou're right I do. It sucks to go unnoticed in something like this but I know the people behind the scenes know what I do and appreciate it so I'm fine. More importantly I wouldn't wanna steal votes from other people nominated for best mod, they earned it.

Just a reminder, Kong and I are not eligible for nominations.Just a thought, I think you guys should be eligible for non mod categories. If you earned the title of trophy thief then it shouldn't go to second place just because you're an admin. Like I said just a thought.

You can also post your own scores if you think they are worthy. Someone else will still need to nominate them before they count though. A lot of really good scores might go over looked just because people aren't aware of them yet.

Best Bout Boxing (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7815/) beat
Gain Ground (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/1474/) beat
Wonder Boy 2: Wonder Boy in Monster Land (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/4624/) I'll beat it before the end of the year

Best Gamer - elrod, need I say more?

Best Mod - - Jojo. Very, very friendly and helpful (well ALL mods here are, but I had to choose :D)

Trophy Thief - RevJ, hes been killing scores left, right and centre!

Best Newcomer - unclechicken. Has some great scores already, and stirs up some good convo in the forums. An all-around great person for the site.

Retro Uprising All Star - Jojo. Great mod, very competitive player, super friendly. An "All-star" in my books!

elrod21
12-20-2011, 09:50 PM
I had to give this a lot of thought. There are so many greats on the site now it is really hard to choose.

Best Gamer:
Tails - I don't know how many of his Mastery's I approved this year.
Josephjo - If you have a classic shooter score it won't last long around him.
Seahawk - Keeps impressing me with his mastery of the sky and puzzle games too.

Best Mod:
jozman3000 - Does so much behind the scenes in the maintaining of this site and still finds time to watch and approve your submitted scores.
Tails - Approving scores can be a long even boring task sometimes. Tails spends tons of time making sure your scores are approved when they should be and aren't when they shouldn't.
Josephjo - Also approves a lot of your scores and has done many things this year to help out the site.

Trophy Thief:
Josephjo - I can only hope he doesn't notice some of the scores I have in genre's he is simply awesome at. If he does a battle ensues and he usually wins.
Agnostic79 - It seems he can pretty much take what he wants most of the time.

Trophy Defender:
Agnostic79 - If you manage to take one of his scores savor the moment because it won't last.
Josephjo - Many of his scores are in genre's he is simply awesome at. If he concentrates on one of those titles he will make the score you took it with to begin with look pathetic by comparison.

Best Forum Participant:
Dudebro - I always see him in forms putting his two cents in.
stevencassidy13 - Always has lots to say in the forums and definitely stirs up the discussion.

Best Newcomer:
Alohaex - Has been a great addition to our forums. One heck of a nice guy.
Barra - Has been a great addition to the arcade who definitely has the skills. I expect to see even more from him in the new year
unclechicken - Another great addition to the arcade who has shown his skills as well.
OmegaShadow - I lost track on the number of submissions of his I watched and approved this year.
Jack Bando - Another one very active in the arcade.

Retro Uprising All Star:
Jozman3000 - Great gamer even though he uses the keyboard to play. Amazing Mod that handles many behind the scenes things. Also active in the Forums as well. I have to look no further for my All Star this year.

Most Impressive Mastery:
Seahawk - 1942 coin op - this is both a test of skill and endurance.
Agnostic - TMNT coin op - A seriously challenging game and keep in mind he did this on one life as well.

Most Impressive Score:
Barra - Galaga coin op - I didn't think I would get to witness that level of skill in this title in my lifetime.

Thanks for the time extension. Its nice to get my two cents in even though many of these names are already nominated. Its been a little over a year since I joined and I'm still loving the site even though I can't spend as much time here as I'd like.

Best Gamer - When it comes to trophy count, quality over quantity.

Elrod - He set out for the trophy lead, he got it, when the quick and easy trophies in his repetoire were exposed countless times he defended them and its made the overall quality of his high scores much higher in 2012. idk where he finds the time to do what he does here!

Agnostic - He's not motivated by trophy count or where he sits on the player leaderboard, Only competition and arcade excellence. Finishing TMNT coin op on one life is a head turning feat. His trophies are not the kind you can take in 5 minutes. His only enemy in the arcade is time. I relate to that well.

Seahawk - Again, the quality of scores stands out. Trophies that require so much training and memory building of level structure to challenge that you dont bother trying.

Best Mod -

Jozman - My nomination last year. Another year of of quality mod work. Well written reviews. Keyboard feats in the arcade always deserve a mention too!

Josephjo - Could be in Best Gamer contention easily in 2012 if he went for it. Not motivated by trophy count either. Mod work was stellar. Very pro-active. Interview scoop with the reigning DK champ was great!

Dudebro - Serves as Site Mod well. Seems to strike the right balance of discretion on enforcing forum rules. If every rule was followed to the letter zero tolerance the forum would be a ghostown.

Elrod - I know he takes the promotion seriously and puts in the time.

Trophy Thief -

Rev J and Omega Shadow - Both acquired alot of trophies in 2011. Rev J all in the last month or so.

Trophy Defender -

Elrod - Had to defend scores constantly as all gamers who take the number one headband should have to do. It comes with the job.

Best Forum Participant -

Dudebro - Without him there would be half the posts and half the interest.

Joe Grotowski - Conspiracy theory aside, breathes life into the forum

Jozman - Killing off his own character just before being rescued in that train wreck detective story thread was epic.

Best Newcomer:

AlohaX - Best newcomer contribution when it comes to the forums

Morshu - Brand new and showing some chops in the current tag team contest.

Agree with the other newcomer nominations. Lots of great additions!

Retro Uprising All Star - Bagel won this last year, big shoes to fill.

Josephjo - Great arcade skills, great arcade history knowledge. Very helpful mod and contributor. Loves competition and welcomes it. No arrogance. Impossible not to like him.

Elrod - As we are brothers this will be an expected nomination but I think in 2011 he did it all. I know how much he loves this site and wants to help in all aspects of it.

Most Impressive Mastery -Agnostic - TMNT coin op for me

Most Impressive Score - Barra- Galaga coin op. New player to the site who gained instant arcade cred with this score. I had a nice run going on a BC Ferry this summer and had to leave it going as the ferry was docking much to my sons dismay. I still wasn't near a million points yet. Great job Barra!

Proposed new Category: Most Underated Gamer - Always trying to shake things up a bit, still haven't given up the Travelling Console Champ Trophy lobby either lol.

Kong - I dont hear alot of talk about the owners arcade prowness but he seems to really excel at fighting games and has some great scores. Knowing his time must be limited with his other duties here thats impressive.

Fogelmir - Never seen him post but his trophy collection is high quality. Never gets mentioned as he flies under the radar.

Lestat - Another gamer who gathers little attention but has nice scores and defends them when taken. I see he was active again today.

Most missed - Bagel and Guru.

All the best to the RU Community over the Holidays and New Year!

Best Gamer
Elrod - If by best gamer we're talking about most accomplished gamer, Elrod is hands down the best of the best. Unlike a lot of other gamers who take tons of scores, Elrod actually puts up tough scores to beat and will defend them pretty thoroughly.
Fogelmir
Seahawk
Winnebagel
Josephjo -
If by best gamer we're talking about most talented gamers and best duelers, I'd go any one of these 4 . I've dueled with all of them and it's always a battle.

Best Mod
Tails -
Jojo -
Jozman -

Trophy Thief
Revj - If you have a weak trophy in your arsenal, he'll find it and steal it and usually keep it.

Trophy Defender
Dojah - Without a doubt THEE most persistent trophy defender on RU. He will fight to the death, and even defend the crappiest of crappy games. Even when I've held something of his for a month or 2 he just doesn't forget and take it back. That's why I stay away from this guy. If you don't believe me, try it yourself.

Best Forum Participant
StevenCassidy - Always an active participant in any forum I've viewed. Very insightful ideas, honest and to the point.

Best Noob

Joshdonow - Gave the best shout out of RU ever on youtube, is pretty active and has a true love for gaming.

RU Allstar
JosephJo - Great gamer and even greater all around guy. His wittiness always cracks me up. Extremely competitive, one of the best gamers and mods on RU and a true friend, not only to me but to many people on here.

Tails -
Jozman -Probably 2 of the most liked people on RU. Equally good gamers and all around good people. Both are very helpful and insightful when you need them and can be competitive without having a huge ego.

@Thunderlips- Thanks for the compliment.

I like your idea for Most Underrated Gamer but I think you missed the mark by mentioning Kong on that list. He may not show it as much as others in the arcade but his skills are pretty well known and feared around here. I've lost count of how many times I've compared him to an android in his single minded dedication to games when he feel like it. That's not blowing smoke either, ask around and I'm sure everyone will agree.

agnostic79

As for most under the radar gamer I choose thunderlips and fogelmir. Thunderlips is probably the most underrated player on here but he has game. When it comes time to step up, watch out. He also has a special nitch for certain types of games most people suck at. Fogelmir is a lot like myself. Doesn't care about trophy count or leaderboard points and doesn't compete much. But his games are works of mastery. If you can take one and keep one, it's quite an accomplishment.

Pick a game that is generally agreed to be one of the hardest and have people compete for the high score.
Something that people all over, not just on this site, have agreed is amongst the most difficult games in existence.

Dudebro
12-30-2011, 11:27 PM
It's a potentially cool idea but I think it would also not be accurate. What if certain players aren't around to compete, do they deserve to have the rest of their gaming achievements not count for best gamer? What if someone has a bad game just for this challenge but does spectacular the rest of the year?

Also what if it is a game they just aren't good at but can beat other gamers at other games handily. Perhaps if it was expanded to a group of games over several genre's you would get a better picture. Give points based on what place each gamer comes in each game and the one with the most points win's. (For example 10 points for first 9 for second etc.)

It would end up being a contest which goes back to the time constraint thing. I don't think it'd be fair to award it to the person with the most free time.

I hear you all. Very good points. Never really thought of that. It's tricky though because some of the best gamers on here don't have much time to play so their accomplishments can never match those who put in much more time. Hmm, working out the details of such a competition would be tough too. I would say a single man tournament with single ellimination rounds. We could have rounds like in the current competition. Who knows, maybe it's a bad idea. I would love the challenge of head to head match ups against the best ru has to offer though. The winner of that tournament would sure have a lot of weight as best gamer. U could also do a series of competitions based on genres but the problem is the there are a lot of genres. Or u could have 1 all inclusive one which incorporated most genres. Regardless of whether or not this replaced these nominations or voting, I think it would make things more competitive. It could be an annual thing.

Dudebro
12-30-2011, 11:59 PM
Well we have a whole year to hammer out the details. Maybe a year long contest so there's no issue of time? Just do what you can when you can, as long as it's before the end of the year.

Or how about this. Choose a series of games, say anywhere from 10-25 and give all of RU a whole year to post the best score. Whoever posts the most top scores by Dec 31st of next year in those games is the winner. That way everyone has a whole year to play the games. u can put in classics too that have infinite scores, like donkey kong, pac man, etc just to make it more prestigious lol. Or u can just scrap the idea. I enjoy this site a lot the way it is anyway. Nothing has to change. Maybe we should just keep it fun and friendly. I didn't mean to take anything away from the nominees by mentioning this, I just like the idea.

Have about 12 specially selected games. Most high scores on 12/31/12 wins.

Yeah, make sure you incorporate different genres and make sure that you can't max out the score easily or have to farm excessively to win. That way it's fair and balanced (unlike fox news) so no one has an edge.

Having a tie breaker scenario in place might help too should there be a tie. But u can always use most second places or thirds for that as well.

Oh lord, I suck at those but I do agree. I like the idea of having some classics but it shouldn't be all or predominantly classics. We should have some shooters, beat-em-ups, puzzles, fighters, side scrollers etc. It also shouldn't have to be infinite score as long as a highest possible score isn't realistic or require farming. Or we can do best time if the score is tied. Or we could do several categories and have a best puzzle gamer, best classics gamer, and whoever has the most combined can be best overall gamer. That way even if u don't win best gamer u can win a sub-category. If I had to pick the games I like DK, DKJ, asteroids, centepede and pac-man for the classics even tho I stink at them. I like bubble bobble, bubble bobble 2, tetris, dr. mario, yoshi's cookie, smash tv, kung fu nes, contra nes (highest possible score with fastest time no code, no continues), tmnt turtles in time arcade, raiden or 1942 or some version of this type of shooter, at least 2. gradius or life force with neverending loops, no codes or continues. Just to name a few. All popular classics to some extent. All good tests of skills. I'd like to here more suggestions.

You have to be careful with some of these 80s games, a lot of them can be broken by patterns. At that point it's not skill so much as how long you can keep doing the same thing over and over.

The rules of the contest will be:
12 specific games are hand selected.
Game selection will be based on games that represent a varied play style and have lots of room for competition.
The person with the most high scores, set during the year 2012 Central Time, in those 12 games, will win.

Here are the games I am thinking so far. Play these before suggesting they be replaced by something else.

I think these are very good choices.
Bank Panic (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/314/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) - Classic arcade game that plays fast, has a big point spread, and is a good test of raw skill.
Kid Chameleon (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/2017/) » Genesis (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/genesis/) - I can't think of a platformer with a bigger point spread.
King of Fighters '94 (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/10845/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) - Not many fighters have a bigger possible point spread.

I think these are pretty good choices.
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/10671/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) If replaced it should be by a beat'em up with a large point spread.
Donkey Kong (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/1075/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) I mainly choose this because of the popularity from King of Kong. I'm not a fan of the game. If it is replaced it should be with another golden age game like Pac-Man or Joust or Burger Time etc.
Lode Runner 3: The Golden Labyrinth (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5688/) Almost never ending puzzle/action game. If replaced it can be by any game that is not similar to the other games already on this list.
Bal Cube (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/4929/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) Never ending game that has a huge point spread. If replaced should be by block drop game like Tetris.

I'm not sure if these are good choices or if my personal bias is getting in the way.
Taloons Great Adventure Mystery Dungeon (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7772/) » Super Nintendo (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/super-nintendo/) If replaced it should be by a very long game that takes lots of time for a single play.
Speed Attack! (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6313/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) If replaced it can be by any game that is not similar to the other games already on this list.
Rampart (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/?q=rampart) if replaced then should be by a puzzle or strategy game.

Complete guesses
Raiden (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/?q=raiden) I don't play shooters. If replaced it should be by a scrolling shooter that can offer lots of competition.
Road Rash 3 (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6841/) » Genesis (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/genesis/) I don't play racing games. If replaced it should be by a racing or sports game that can offer lots of competition.

Raiden isn't a good score attacking shooting game imo. Your score is more or less directly tied to how far you can get. It also strikes me as too long.

Either replace it with something that is quickly loopable like Gradius (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5871/) or a game that has lots of opportunities for score attacking like Armed Police Batrider (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7814/) or Battle Garegga (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7819/) or 19XX (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7784/).

I think Mario Bros (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/2305/) is a better choice than Donkey Kong as well, again DK is more about getting as far as you can, where Mario Bros you can string combos together and there are bonus rounds that can lead to lots of differences in score even at the same round.

elrod21
01-10-2012, 03:31 PM
Actually SH if you point press in Donkey Kong there can be a huge difference in score compared to someone who just tries to pass levels.

That's why some players reach the kill screen with under 700K and others can reach it with over 1 million points.

---------- Post added at 01:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:31 PM ----------

Also point pressing in Donkey Kong takes a higher level of skill. It is really dangerous to do it.

Seahawk
01-10-2012, 03:43 PM
It's not easy in Mario Bros either, if you mess up, then enemies move faster, and more will have spawned, filling up the stage. Then you have to watch for gaps to jump between them, all while dodging a hell of fireballs and falling icicles. And dying doesn't reset the stage, and you are vulnerable the instant you leave the safety platform.

The kill screen is a factor too, granted nobody here has reached it, but if this is going to undergo heavy score attacking, you must consider the possibility that someone reaches it, and I don't think its a good idea to have an arbitrary time limit on the game.

One more thing, the movement of the fires in DK depends on the random number generator, which can lead to different outcomes while score attacking every time. I honestly don't like having my gameplay dictated so much by random factors I can't control.

elrod21
01-10-2012, 04:22 PM
Do you honestly believe there are no random elements in Mario Brothers?

Fireball routines in Donkey Kong are only Random to a point. Good players can deal with the randomness of Fireballs just fine. (Keep in mind both Fireballs and FireFoxes use the same logic.)

Also a trip to the kill screen is an over 2 hour endeavor and depending on your diligence will be a very high score or a not so much score. The local champion in my neck of the woods typically gets between 800K-850K when he reaches the kill screen.

Dealing with random events is one of the things that made classic age games so difficult to master but it is possible.

Seahawk
01-10-2012, 05:29 PM
The difference is that in MB randomness is minimal (dropping icicles only) and is used to kill you directly, instead of being part of the score tricks of DK.

In the end I guess it comes down to preference.
It's why I like shooting games so much, you are in full control of your destiny, and when you lose it is your fault, and not because the universe decides to give you a "Whoops, too bad" moment.

I just feel that the heavy handed luck in DK is detrimental to competition. That's all.

(Also, I hope I'm not coming across as rude here, that is certainly not my intent, this is a good discussion =).

elrod21
01-10-2012, 05:59 PM
It does come down to preference. I find all my deaths in Donkey Kong are definitely my fault because I timed something wrong or didn't pay attention to something I should have been. (Like which Fireballs are the pausing kind and which ones aren't.)

I don't think you are being rude just very passionate about your position and there is nothing wrong with that. :)

All I know is any shooting game we pick should be of the kind that doesn't require you to make it through the entire game on one man to beat it because you lose all your power-ups and it is too hard to fight at the higher levels without them.

I don't think Raiden fits that bill if I remember correctly.

Kong

I haven't played Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/10671/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) much. Someone should test it and make sure it is a good pick or suggest a different beat'em up.

Lode Runner 3: The Golden Labyrinth (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5688/) has 30 levels and then it loops. The loops do not increase in difficulty. Getting to level 30 is quite a feat that probably wont happen but if two people manage to get that far then it just becomes an endurance test. It might should be replaced.

Try this game Speed Attack! (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6313/) » Coin Op (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/coin-op/) . Do you think it will work well?

Road Rash 3 (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6841/) » Genesis (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/genesis/) I'm not sure if this is a good pick.

Change the controls from the tab menu.
The original cabinet had 7 buttons, no joystick.
I leave buttons A-D as default (Z-V) and change Left and Right to the arrow keys and change Turn to the Up Arrow.

Once the game starts you will select a card that is facing you by pressing Z, X, C, or V. And place it on either the left or right deck by pressing left or right arrow. After you get rid of a card press Up (Turn) to draw more cards.

When you place a card it must be either one up or one down from the card shown. Example on a 10 you can play a 9 or a Jack. On a 5 you can play a 4 or a 6.

If the computer gets rid of his cards before you then you lose.

(http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6841/)Road Rash 3 (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/6841/) » Genesis (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/genesis/) I feel the same way. Not a good pick.Any suggestions? Should be replaced by something not represented by the other games. I was thinking sports or racing or a sim game like Aerobiz Supersonic (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/100/). (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5753/)

I have to admit speed attack is not your run of the mill game. I thought it was just me having problems with it seeing as I am not big on the puzzler type games.

Perhaps something else?

Pick one please.

Whaaaaaat........that's like telling me to try and pick my favorite kid =/.

I'll write handy descriptions of each game instead.

Gradius (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/5871/) - Hori shooter. Power ups chosen and activated by the user. Very quickly loopable, high loops have return fire when enemies are destroyed, making destroying enemies tricky business. Once you pass the first loop, difficulty rises very quickly, making this game suitable to see who can grind out the longest survival time.

19XX (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7784/) - Vert shooter. Of all four of these games this one probably has the purest shooting action. Select a ship at the start and go. Scoring revolves around destroying enemies, killing bosses fast, not dying, not using bombs. This game is suitable to see who can get put all these skills together the best.

Battle Garegga (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7819/) - Vert shooter. Score tactics revolve around chaining medals (don't drop them) and finding bombable spots in the environment to collect more medals, and for points. Destroy all segments of the boss for more points as well. Difficulty is VERY subtle. It looks slow but is pretty hard.

Armed Police Batrider (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/7814/) - Vert shooter. More or less an extreme version of Battle Garegga. Has same gameplay system from BG, find medals, destroy environment. Tons of customizability with lots of characters. Game is as hard as the player wants it to be. This is the ultimate score attacking shooting game.

For a puzzle game, I'll suggest any variant of Panel de Pon style game, and the objective is to get either the highest score on the 2-minute Time Attack mode, or playing Marathon mode where the goal is to max out the score (only 99999) the fastest.

Racing-Rad Racer NES?
Sports-Any baseball game without a mercy rule

But instead of picking based on genre, imho 1-3 games from each system would be my ideal format. But this way is cool too.
