I sat through 2 hours of this crap hoping to see a HL3 trailer. I'm seriously pissed. Also, here's one for your "Death of Gaming" thread :

Some dude on xbox.com was raging that skyward sword lost to skyrim for goty or w/e. It was funny.

There's a VGAs?

Also Minecraft was officially released this year. If any game deserved GOTY it was Minecraft.

You didn't miss anything good...and it was.

Anyway, does anyone remember that guy they invited to the VGA's who was totally out of control? He wouldn't stop bashing the CEO (I believe that was his position). I think his name was black something?

Did the guy really expect a Japanese game to do well at the VGA's?

Dudebro

He did and Zelda did do well, it just didn't win GOTY. It was nominated for GOTY and Best action/adventure. It won best Wii and Best motion game. Also Super Mario 3d Land won best handheld game.

That guy also thought that Sonic generations should win game of the year. Really.

I think the biggest letdown is Mark Hamill losing Song of the year(NOT EVEN NOMINATED!) for his work in Arkham City-
Batman: Arkham City - Joker singing "Only You" (End Credits) - YouTube
He also lost Best performance by a human male, robbery.

Aren't they all? Either way I was just correcting your implication that japanese games aren't given a fair chance. Btw does Japan have any video game awards shows and if so would any US titles get a fair shot? Just curious.

Just because it was nominated doesnt mean they gave it a fair shake, and 3D Land won because there wernt any NA handheld realeases. I imagine that they have awards of some sort over there, and I doubt that NA does very well. There really is a very big difference in JP and NA games, and for the most part gamers prefer what their own countries produce.

Lots of other games were left of the list for GOTY, like Minecraft, but Zelda got on there. Same with Best Action/Adventure. If it won you'd be singing a different tune I'm sure.

My point isnt that I think it deserved to win, my point is that it wouldnt win regardless of weither or not it deserved to win.

Dudebro

It didn't deserve to win. Skyrim is the biggest game of the year and it delivered what it promised. I've honestly only heard talk of SS from you guys and a handful of people in other places. Obviously that's not an accurate measure of it's quality but it does speak to it's popularity in the US. I think the only completely inaccurate one is Portal 2, no way that deserved so many awards.

"Some dude on xbox.com was raging that skyward sword lost to skyrim for goty or w/e. It was funny."

I think they did a good job spreading the accolades. Seriously, there was no clear game of the year IMO. Those VGA's are always so Sony biased anyway, I think it was for their pocket books that crossplat/sony games won it. Just look at their history, it's a sony circle jerk year after year. Also, the VGA's are as reputable as winning a Doritos's artist of the year award so that fellow should invest less emotional energy into things as stupid as a Spike TV award. As much as I love MXC and COPS, I don't think winning an award from them is anything to base quality on.

"i'm guessing it was a pile of horse shite?"

I would gladly jump in a pile of horse shite and rub it on my face to get my 2 hours back. It was the worst thing I ever seen. You think gaming is dead ? The VGA's were the firing squad. It's clear too me now that gaming will be divided. Casuals vs Gamers. It was everything every country hates about America rolled up into a buttery twinky and exploited for all it's financial worth. I'm surprised duff man didn't come out and give out coca cola dlc codes for Middle East Shooter 7.

"Anyway, does anyone remember that guy they invited to the VGA's who was totally out of control?"

I'm under the impression he's an actor that spike is using. They were like "This video went viral last year" lol 10,000 hits isn't viral. Someone they can use as a scapegoat/straw man to symbolically 0wn the "hardcore" gamer. The whole thing was terribly scripted. If you don't think companies I've worked for companies who've spent $30,000 on less effective "grass roots" marketing ideas. It's all weird psychological tricks that business people think work (but ultimately don't).

"The VGA's are entirely rigged you know?"
THIS.

"Aren't they all?"
THIS.

@FUNGUS

Oh I saw this. I actually wrote Gabe, I was so furious after all the stupid rumors about hl3 being on VGA's not being OFFICIALLY DENOUNCED by valve. Seriously, one tweet valve. The whole show was awful, it was like watching MTV teen choice awards but worse since it uses something I like to leverage it's commercial potential. Plus all the games are sandbox crap. Maybe we should create a term to accurately describe things like Battlefield, MW, Skyrim, and all that OH HEY HERE'S A VIRTUAL WORLD THIS MUST MEAN IT WILL BE FUN.

Hollywood gamers ? Govies ? (Game Movies)

GOO vies has a nice ring to it.

See, VIDEOgames are called VIDEO games because they are conventional games (monopoly, risk, chess, baseball, sports, etc) transitioned to video. All these next gen games aren't based on anything but movies. I don't play megaman, mortal kombat, ridge racer, nhl 96 because they are theatrical. It's like modern gaming rewards these things but they just don't cater to the people who pioneered the art form.

Starcraft 2 isn't a govie. Battlefield is a govie. Castlevania isn't a Govie. Skrim is a govie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the ocassional hollywood movie, but this trend of Movie Games backed by a Doritos/Pepsi attitude and marketing direction being classified as "Videogames" has to start being divided. You know what they call games that resemble tradition gaming these days ? "Indy games". What a horrible label. RU of all people should at least understand what my point is. Stuff like the VGA's is embarrassing and has to not be associated with gaming any longer.

Skyrim is not a govie. It's beautiful and has a huge landscape but it's not like a Metal Gear game with more cutscenes than action. In fact SC2 has more of a movie presentation than Skyrim, if you count the campaign.

I can't beleive they dropped the fighting game genre entirely. It's such a corrupt show that they blatantly drop huge categories because they arnt in bed with any of the developpers/publishers.

I can't believe they dropped the fighting game genre entirely.
Marvel vs Capcom 3 barely even acknowledged even though it's part of a huge e-sport following. Deplorable. Who cares about those morons, like they have taste.

Skyrim is not a govie. It's beautiful and has a huge landscape but it's not like a Metal Gear game with more cutscenes than action. In fact SC2 has more of a movie presentation than Skyrim, if you count the campaign.

Well, it's not as bad as the rest of the stuff released. When I mean govie I don't refer to cut scenes. Cut scenes are fine. It's when a game is so linear it feels like you are just on rails. I can't defend MGS4, you're right.

Fungusman's Govie Law #1:
The least amount of user input rewarded by the maximum amount of visual stimulation and experiential validation. Example :

Battlefield 3 first level is a Govie
Swearing/Violence/etc NSFW maybe ...

It's like a baby getting praise for not pooping itself.

Demon-Mask

By that definition, almost any game could be a "govie", unless it has minimalistic animations with absurdly complex inputs to achieve said minimalistic animations.
Also, these animations must be trivial and there must be no reward for any actions.

There also must be no plotline at all just to avoid any sense of linearity, as the more plotline the more linear a game must be, so if there is no plot, it is easier for there to be no linearity.

Also, the graphics as a whole must be minimalistic, as you get more of a visual "reward" from prettier games.

Basically, the only non-"govie" is the creative mode in Minecraft.

Yeah really calling any of the elder scrolls games linear is just ridiculous. SC2 and Castlevania are way more linear by comparison.

The least amount of user input rewarded by the maximum amount of visual stimulation and experiential validation.
And you think Skyrim fits that bill? Battlefield and other stuff I'll give you but Skyrim is a horrible example to use. Most the time I've been playing has been off the beaten path away from the story line.

Battlefield is a govie, MW3 is a govie, Mass Effect is a govie, ps3 and Xbox 360 are govie players !

You didn't need to rate me down over this fungus. Saying it's not as bad as other stuff being released isn't taking it back it's giving it the tiniest amount of credit you can muster. The fact is Skyrim, and Elder Scrolls in general, are far less linear than most of the games out right now. It's the opposite of what you said it was. Should I rate you down now or can we discuss this like adults?

Kugyince

I think linearity is bad usage.

I think this better sums it up:
The least amount of user input rewarded by the maximum amount of visual stimulation and experiential validation.

Well that still doesn't apply to Skyrim or the Elder Scrolls games. I think something like Skyward Sword is more of a govie.

Nice sarcasm.
I, too, subscribe to the theory that a bad game can be fun, and a good game can be boring. Quality and enjoyability are separate things.
