Can't get controller to work.

Trying to use a controller in Arcade High Score mode.

Logitech Dual Action

Windows 7

Firefox 7

Please help

It doesn't work at all? It may sound like a stupid question but are you plugging it in before you load the game up? Also are you sure this controller works otherwise?

Welcome to RU. Sorry I don't have an answer for you but I'm sure someone else will be along eventually with something more technical.

Plug the controller in before you start the game.
Once the game starts it should auto detect the controller and set up the default buttons.
By default the d-pad and main fire buttons should be set on the controller. The start and coin buttons will still be on the keyboard though.
You can change the defaults by pressing Tab to open the menu and then changing the controls from there.

If it still is not working then make sure Windows is recognizing it.
Go to Control Panel
Start Devices and Printers
Find your controller
Right click and select properties
Make sure all of the buttons are working.

If the controller is not listed as a device or the buttons are not working then the problem is not in the game but somewhere else.

Tried both pluggin it in before loading and again after. I tried the controller on FCEUltra, no problems.

yes. I tried both the input (general) and input (system) sections. I picked a button (P1 UP) until it was blank and hit up/the analog's up on both sticks. Nothing

Try scrolling to the bottom of the page and change the style from default to beta and then try playing the game again. It will load it in beta mode. Maybe you will have better luck with that.

Just this one. Unless there's a way to plug a PS3 controller into a PC

Open the Start Menu.

Type 'Game Controllers' in the box. No misspellings. It should appear in the search results.

Alternatively, go to Control Panel -> Classic View (if its not already set) -> Game Controllers

The box should pop up with your controller selected. Click "Properties". It should then give you a menu for testing the inputs. Do they respond when you push buttons, move sticks/pad?

Not sure. I know for sure PS3 controllers work on RU in XP, Vista and 7 I can't help with unfortunately.

You can try that for Windows 7

The PS3 controller is tricky in XP, if you don't do it exactly right it doesn't work.

To use it on RU I have to go like this:

1)Plug it in
2)Run the driver exe(might not be needed for other drivers)
3)Press PS button
4)Start RU game

If I do it wrong I have to unplug it, wait for it to time out(the red lights to stop flashing), then start over

I have no idea. If it is plugged in before you start the game and windows is detecting it and the you should be able to configure it in the tab menu.

My last suggestion is to try this with your PS3 controller or to try with just the keyboard.

Got it to work somehow. There's a switch in the back of my controller they say always leave on setting A, NEVER go to B. I flipped it back and forth and now it works. ty everyone

I have no idea why there's two settings. And after further tinkering I don't think that was the problem.

Logitech has a program called Logitech Profiler, if it's off my controller works on RU

im having a similar problem, i am unable to configure my xbox controller on every game except road rash 2....dont know why !!!!
When i open options go to configure and when it says press the button for up it wont recognise the button but works for the first game i played with it- road rash 2...?

I'm having a similar issue as Jack Bando. USB Saturn pad. works fine in 'Set up USB game controllers', works in windows/other programs with joy2key, but in retrouprising it won't work at all :(

can't see where to edit my post but wanted to say that i tried default emu with same USB controller on my netbook and everything worked fine (didn't even need to use joy2key)

so probably this pc needs a reboot, finnicky windows

Is Windows recognizing it? Go to control panel. Devices and Printers. Right click the controller. Go to settings. Then properties. Then test the controller.

If it works there then what system and play mode are you trying?

its worked for everything else on my pc, on RU i once got it to work with the genesis but nothing else, i've been trying score mode on gameboy (i occasionally get the left button to work)

Wait 10 seconds. 1 second should be plenty but wait 10 to be sure.
Click the Score Mode link.
After game starts press Tab key.
In menu change inputs using the control pad.

I did figure something out for controller issues. If you have another client of mame open, you cannot use a joystick. I was messing around with a newer client and I didn't close it, then I loaded up RU and my controller didn't work. I was like wtf, it was just working in mame. Then I figured out that if you have another session that is actively using the controller, it binds to that client.

Glad you figured it out. That is an example of something that would be extremely difficult to troubleshoot online but easy to figure out with Team Viewer.

Yea it drove me crazy for about 10 minutes. I was playing on wolfmame then loaded RU and then I had a dead joystick. Opened and closed the ru window like 10 times, and closed the browser and cleared cache. Then I finally closed mame and loaded up ru again and it worked.
