View Full Version : New Game Ideas
This thread was inspired by http://retrouprising.com/video-games/all-other-games/quite-possibly-best-game-ever/t12464/ (That title is sarcastic.) So I was thinking of really bad game ideas.
But this thread is for discussing any new game concepts, not just bad ones.
Virtual Grass. A smart phone app where you watch grass grow. About an inch or so a week. You have to water it and weed it and mow it and fertilize it. I bet a bunch of people would pay a $1 for that. Hell I bet people would even pay a monthly charge for a virtual lawn mower to come over and maintain it.
Another one. A boxing coach sim. I actually think there is a lot of potential here. You don't box. You pick your fighter(s). You train him. You you find him fights. You promote him and raise him up the ranks. Negotiate deals. Place bets. Fix fights. Give tips. Decide recovery plans when he is hurt. Watch videos of other fighters to find their weaknesses. Stage some charity fights with wrestlers. Decide when it is time to retire. I can see this having lots of potential to be really good or really bad depending on who made it.
This one would be horrible. Virtual ref. You just call fouls and people boo you.
Shoots man, if people would pay for this app iBeer Download Magic for iPhone, iPod touch, Android - YouTube then people would buy just about anything.
What about a blacksmith app where you learn to forge metal into weapons and other useful things like an Iron Man suit. Get detailed in the game like selecting your coal, how much air you blow into the fire, how hard you strike with your hammer and what not. Have a drink of water or else you'll pass out. Go nuts with the details.

It seems that way but this is BS2 we're talking about, he's a weird-o.
The grass game sounds like something people would buy, sadly. It could even be a facebook game.
The boxing sim game would work too but it would probably have to be a portable game or another FB one. I doubt it would sell well on consoles.
I've had this idea for a while and I really do think it could work. A MMO that crosses all platforms. The PC/console versions would be full, the smart phones would be in the middle and the browser/FB versions could be very basic.
For the full version you would have a character who can manipulate the constant world, FPS style wars, micromanaging cities or anything in between. Smart phones would have slightly less options but they could have special roles only their characters can do, like run shops and other easy stuff like that. The basic version could allow you to do stuff like spreadsheet style managing of your characters and their homes, businesses(could be more but you wanna give people incentive to play full or medium).

A game where you play as the random, powerless NPC just going about life as usual. Dealing with the hero breaking into your house and taking all of your stuff, just staring at you waiting for you to say your one line of dialog, and the villain killing your family and destroying the village and crap like that.

Kind of going off of Brawlmaster's idea; a game where you sell military arms and supplies in a war... to both sides. It would be a RTS, with your overall goal being to make the most money while keeping in favor of whichever side wins a battle. You would have to keep your supplies safe and away from any risk of being robbed completely, and also you'd have to try to stay out of the areas where any skirmishes will take place.
CEO, a game where you start off filling out applications at big companies and work your way up to from paper pusher to CEO. Blackmailing anyone who gets in your way by stalking and taking pictures they wouldn't want anyone to see. Brown nose the boss a bit. Hit on the secretary for some useful intel. Steal other peoples' work and claim it as your own. It could be fun.

Bus Driving Simulator. No, not like Desert Bus.
In this game, you pick up passengers and collect fares, with which you can make the bus better to earn more cash and drive faster and better. If you take too long to get a passenger to his destination, they get angry and take their money back and leave. When you pick somebody up, there is a chance there will be a fight. You must break it up by pressing a sequence of buttons.

How about a game where you collect dog droppings in a town.
When the game starts out there are just a few dogs, and as you progress through the levels more people move to town and some bring their dogs with them.
Dog owners who pick up their own dog's poop need to be rewarded somehow or they cease picking it up, leaving the job to you from that point on.
Non - dog owners complain to City Hall when there are droppings left sitting around too long.

How about a game where you play as a Barrista in a coffee house, making fancy lattes with pictures in the foam for your customers?
{yeah I went for a coffee yesterday so I got it on the brain}
This is a special skill so it would automatically be a challenging video game.
Apparently those who can do it IRL gain some real fame, similar to tattoo artists.
Making successful latte art {I don't know if that's the proper name for it} gains you tips, and the fancier the picture, the higher the tips.
However, if you are unsuccessful in completing your latte picture and handing it to the customer within 20 or so seconds after the next order is placed, the next customer gets impatient and leaves.
Every customer that leaves empty handed causes another customer in line to become discouraged and so they leave as well.
Every happy customer that leaving with their latte causes another 2 customers to enter the coffee house.

A civilization-style game where you play as one of the citizens, and you can either fight the system or aid it by joining factions such as the military or underground revolutionaries, from there you can build bases and mobilize troops to further your cause.
A heist game would be cool.
The game would be played in two phases. Planning and Action phase. Like in heist movies such as Ocean's 11.
You have to first recruit your team for their different skills.
After you have to drive the get away car and fence the loot.
End goal is to not get caught, make it to the top of the international most wanted list, and make the most money.

They do have a few stealth missions and a negotiation system where you capture hostages and trade them in for fallen partners to bring them back in (sort of the re spawn method in this game). Not sure if the following suggestions have already been mentioned or not. If they have, please disregard said suggestions.
- Playing as the true final boss of an RPG. Normally you're the hero with party members and all that, while the TFB is the big bad boss with the AI roulette making it so that you don't know if he's going to attack next turn or use that one awesome-looking attack with an awesome name that has a stupidly high chance of killing you unless you've prepared for it. Imagine playing as the TFB and just spamming said pretty-much-one hit kill against the heroes. Or any other moves said boss has.
- Playing a simulation game wherein you're a particle and you do what particles usually do.
- Essentially playing God on Earth, and deciding whether you should subject Chicago to a severe hailstorm or just punt a comet in North Korea's direction. All of this to Crysis-level graphics, of course.
- Gladiatorial combat simulator where you get to choose any two combatants that you wish to see face off against each other, be it Amaterasu against Caesar, Socrates against Kim-Jong Il or, heck, Amenominakanushi against Zeus.
- Simulation game wherein you get to see what happens when you subject a human to, for example, point-blank artillery shells or liquid nitrogen or anything like that.
Keep in mind that all of the abovementioned simulation games assume that the computer it is run on is powerful enough to essentially recreate each scenario as if it had happened in real life, randomness and all that included.

Id like to see a game that is different everytime, for example take a game like say, The Legend of Zelda. Rather than have the map the same each time have it randomized, so level 1 will be in a different location each time, but take it even further and say level 1 is different everytime. Perhaps in one game your main weapon is a sword, and the next time it's a spear. I think that 20 or so variations on each piece of equipment, stages, spells ect. would be efficiant. Now to make it even better, each combination of stuff you get will allow you to beat the game, but you will need to go about things differently each time.
For example lets say there is a bridge you need to repair, perhaps you can use ice magic to freeze up a new bridge, or use rope to swing accross, or maybe you have something in your inventory witch will allow you to get to your goal via something other than the bridge. It's got a touch of Maniac Mansion in the sense of working with what you have I suppose.
TLDR: super cool game yo!

Azure Dreams is a dungeon crawler that's randomized like that but it also has RPG elements that steven might like. All the loot from the dungeon can be spent on upgrading your house(and not just making it bigger) and you can even fix up the rest of the town, shops and houses. On top of that it has a pet system where you can raise them with levels and choose which to bring with you based on their abilities. It also has a subplot about finding a wife, so like a dating sim if you're into that sort of thing. It's really awesome.

Yeah like that, only pushed further, where every single element is effected by randomness. Diablo kinda had some good ideas where there was no specific in game equipment, only variations of equipment. If I had amazing programming ability I would really try and make this game.

I don't know of any randomized open world games. I think that kind of thing would mean the game would have to be like Minecraft where things are random and less meaningful. Like towns are randomly seeded but that means they're so random sometimes they don't make sense, like half in a wall.

@DB cool, I may have to check it out.
Back to my game, I don't even know if this is possible but if I could manage to get the programmers to design this thing where even they don't know what can do what that would be amazing. Like if each tool in the game had specific characteristics randomized to where each would be usful in a different way each time. My whole idea I guess is based on taking the "never the same game twice" to a whole new level. It would be entirely possible that your second time through you wouldnt see a single element you saw the first time.

Well there would be some control, like the location of a dungeon on the map would be one of a possible 100x100 grid, then the actual dungeon would be one of 50 designs, colored by one of 50 textures and so on. For every enemy you see in game there will be 20 that you won't see, each with their own variation on color, maybe purple means high defense one game, and then mean extreme agility the next, put a random weapon in their hand with it's own random attributes as well, and this sort of thing is in everything in the game. I'm picturing it being sprite based and birds eye view right now, maybe a combonation of birds eye and then some parts side scrolling.

Well it's as story driven as a Zelda game, and 2d, I don't really compare it to Minecraft myself, but it would be cool if you and your buddies could hang out in the world I suppose but it was originally meant to be a standalone game, maybe 15-20 hours to complete, depending on what game you get. Oh! and each time you beat it you get a grade based on how hard your particular adventure was.
Demon-Mask
11-07-2011, 11:15 PM
I've got one, a more modernized version of LSD: Dream Emulator. Better graphics, more areas, the areas are all connected by pathways, much like the original, but there will be a degree of randomness in the level design itself, not just in the textures. Of course, hitting walls would still link you to a random area, but now a random place in the random area. It would also have more areas with more variety between the levels.
I'd play that game. I'd fund that game. I'd make that game.
@Steven, I don't think the hard part would be the programming. The hard part would be the story boarding. Just coming up with all the ideas that would fit together when random but still make sense as a plot and puzzle.

@DM, what's the game excatly? just a sim?
It's difficult to define it. Basically, you walk around areas with randomized textures, weird creatures, music created from mixtures of randomized tracks and just take it all in. Here, maybe these links will help:

A modern version of LSD would be awesome. Just think of all the crazy randomness that could be accomplished with modern hardware capabilities and large storage capacities.
Since modern games require a goal, a point, a set objective, or some kind of ending, it would absolutely never sell though.

I'd love a modern version of LSD. As I said, I'd fund it if I had money, and I'd work on it if given the chance.

It wouldn't be too hard to developed, probably half of the program would just be calls to the random number generator :p.

Sodoku is a 10 x 10 grid where the numbers 1 through 10 appear in every collumn verticly and horizontally in a random order. I figure I can use this basic premis to ensure that my storyline will get to the end of the game and still maintain it's randomness. I've actually started work on the graphics of this game, hopfully I can stick with it. Right now it's just looking like a Zelda clone. One thing I decided I wanted was a copy of the jumping mechanics of SMB 1, only you can also move up and down the screen aswell as left and right. So you will actually be able to jump around corners. Might even include hold B to run.

Bad game ideas
Traffic jam driving sim
RPG where you are the father of a middle class family of 4. You pay the bills, taxes, drive to work, take out trash, eat your wife's crappy cooking every night, put up with your spoiled children, sex once a month, etc.
Moderately ok idea
Guitar Roadie Hero - Set up concerts, tune guitars, do gopher work, break things down. Must have awesome soundtrack
Best idea ever
SC's mom dating sim

Squeaky Clean: A Janitor Simulation.
In it, you play as a janitor who must clean the building. There are several different levels, such as School, Tower, and Mall. You get paid varying amounts depending on how fast and how much you cleaned. You can spend the money on upgrades to your cleaning equipment.

True, there isn't any real interaction, it's just you existing a three-dimensional field, only able to move in two, warping around when you touch things.
