Good to have you back Sez.
I hope things are Ok with you.
The new reputation comment feature is there so everyone can see who rated what up or down, while at the same time providing an opportunity to add a comment or explanation of why they like or dislike a particular post.
While this is nice enough, the new system even sends you a PM to alert you of a rate up or down and links directly to that post.
Hello Sez.

tell me how "him" makes sense in that sentence.
I believe that the full sentence would look like this:
"He can't half play footy he can't."
But in this case, "he can't" is substituted for "him"
Messing around with this concept, you can break into more complex sentences like:
"He just struck him in the face him did now."

tell me how "him" makes sense in that sentence.
I'm not well versed in working class British English, but I assume it is being used to specify the subject, just the same as the first "he".
Maybe it makes it less ambiguous, so there is no way "footy" is the subject.
I don't know, it sounds dumb to me, but it's acceptable in the dialect, and I don't regularly encounter people who talk in such a way in real life. Just skip over the final "him" if it bothers you so much.

Hood=Bonnet (Car)
Bonnet=Hat (for the head)Those are pretty synonymous. Hood and Bonnet both mean a covering for the head, the engine is the head of a car. Bonnet is also a hat but in the US it's considered old fashioned and for women exclusively. Although the term "bee in your bonnet" knows no gender.
Fender=Bumper
Kindergarten=Nursery
Store=Shop
Bar=Pub
Vacation=Holiday
Bathroom=Toilet
Candy=SweetsI hear all of these in the US, no difference. It might be regional though, I am in New England after all.
Windshield=Wind Screen (car)We're right about this one. It's a shield more than it's a screen.
Cigarette=Fag (Imagine if I walked into an american store and asked for 20 fags!)You forgot about poof. That's a purely British insult for homosexuals. Poof in the US is "Used to indicate a sudden vanishing".
Also according to wikipedia Faggot means a specific type of meatball in the UK, that true?

It seems to me on some that the Uk version is more slang and the US iis more literal I suppose the UK had longer to perfect and Being in New England doesn't make a difference it's the same in the mid west.
Dudebro

Or their English deteriorated more than ours because they were more isolated. We are the melting pot of cultures right? Brits have been babbling back and forth with very little outside influences enriching their language.
Being in New England doesn't make a difference it's the same in the mid west
No way. I know for a fact I speak differently than people from the south or the midwest. The differences may not be major but they're there.

I have kin up in Michigan and they call soda "pop". In my area, we call it soda by it's type instead. YOu don't get offered a soda, you get offered a Sprite or maybe a Coke. All correct, theres loads more, TBH It changes depending on which part of the country you go to, we speak a lot of slag over here in the UK plus due to different forms of media we have picked up on the US slang too.
The only one thats wrong is the hood-bonnet translation, we use both but mainly bonnet, and Pubs are not bars, we have a lot of bars over here, mainly in the town and city centers along with night clubs but yeah pubs are completely different.

I've always called it pop, I've always heard it called pop.
When I was in Texas, people didn't ever understand what I was talking about when I asked for pop, so I'd have to ask for a coke, knowing that the only two options my family ever offered were Dr. Pepper and Big Red.
It felt so stupid, asking for a coke, even though there was no coke in the house.

@DM- Well I know for a fact I've heard it called soda in movies and tv. I can only remember it being called pop when the character is specifically southern or midwestern.
@steven- same thing for me, I only heard of the gum. Apparently Big Red was one of the largest soda producers up until recently, now other companies produce their soda. Weird that I live in the US and have never heard of one of the most popular junk food drinks.
The gum - cinnamon
The soda- red creme soda
which is why i hatethe gum, cinnamon is nasty unless its a cinnabon or cinnamon toast crunch

I like the gum, but I wasn't talking about the gum, I was talking about the drink.
Who knew that a simple subject as how we refer to carbonated soft drinks could create a discussion like this?

Errrggh Big Red Cheweys!
Not seen them for donkeys!!
On the issue of Pop v Soda I personally call it Juice which annoys the hell out of people because they think I am refering to something else like apple or orange juice, but yeah I call coke and others Juice (I really dont know why?)
When the majority is wrong it's not a big deal to be mocked by them. I'm astounded at how moronic the south is, calling everything Coke? That takes the cake.
We sure love cake :dance:

I've always called it pop, I've always heard it called pop.
When I was in Texas, people didn't ever understand what I was talking about when I asked for pop, so I'd have to ask for a coke, knowing that the only two options my family ever offered were Dr. Pepper and Big Red.
It felt so stupid, asking for a coke, even though there was no coke in the house.
San Antonio is weird for me. Most of the people look like they speak Spanish, but they don't. And those that can speak it very poorly. You should simply ask for the specific drink you want, instead of saying coke.
oh, i always thought texas was mid-west for some reason

Nah calling Texas part of the south will get you in trouble with some people. Texas is in the southern part of the US but it's not technically what people are talking about when they say the south.
Deep South - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Texas is part of that but as the article explains it's just certain parts that border the other states. Nowdays Texas is pretty modern and progressive compared to the true deep south states which are known for open racism and ignorance.

San Antonio is kind of weird, but I'm from the Northwest. It was big and mondern, but it also felt old as hell. Then there was the fact that I live in a primarily white city, and San Antonio is much more diverse. I'd like to go back to San Antonio, It'd be nice to deal with an area that doesn't have to deal with getting snowed in and sub-zero temperatures.
I said coke because they didn't understand what pop was referring to, they thought I was requesting to talk to my dad, since this was at the houses of various family members. When I was in public, I always requested what I wanted, then was disappointed by the lack of Pepsi and then I settled for Coke or Dr. Pepper.
ive never heard of a place with a shortage of pepsi :/

I call any type of soft drink (no booze) that has bubbles in it Fizzy Pop. A still flavoured drink I call juice.
And yes, there is a food called Faggots in the UK, its a type of large meatball, mainly consisting of Pork, and other pork related products like liver and other offal, mixed with pepper. They sound really gross, but they are very tasty. Heres an 80's commercial for you USA'ers to have a laugh about...
Yes this is true, I remember seeing faggots in the shop as a kid and laughing at the inapropriate name.
As Im now a trainee chef, one of the first things I learned to do was a bouquet garni which can also be called a faggot
