View Full Version : Nintendo's big announcement

So apparently at the Tokyo Game Show, the big n is going to announce something "extremely big" to kick off the event.
Anyone privy to any insider information or have any good guesses?
I think they might have bought Capcom, just a stupid guess mind you.

2) This is nothing new. They've made a habit of holding an event around TGS for awhile now.

"It seems a Japanese site called Inside Games has come back with a report about Nintendo’s 3DS-related event on September 13th. There’s been some other outside sources indicating a note of an announcement, but they were not solid on the Sept. 13th date. However, it does mention that Nintendo plans on showing something BIG."

Rebranded 3DS With Decreased Emphasis on 3D, Second Analog Stick Coming in 2012: Report (http://www.1up.com/news/rebranded-3ds-decreased-emphasis-3d-second-analog-stick-coming-12)

The second analog stick is not going to happen.
Why? Because they'd render the version with only one analog stick absolutely obsolete, as developers would make use of the second analog stick. Games developed for dual analog sticks, with the original version of the console only having one analog stick causes problems.
It's second hand speculation, at best.

Supposedly the second analog rumour is that it will actually be an add-on to the existing 3DS. I'm not looking forward to it personally if it's true that is.

How would you add it on to your existing 3DS?
Slime Slayer
08-23-2011, 11:35 PM
The only spots where it could plug in with any function would be the sd slot, or the cartridge slot. Perhaps it will not even plug directly in and rely on bluetooth or something.
Demon-Mask
08-24-2011, 12:03 AM
SD slot and cartridge slot are both things you don't want to loose.
And doing it by bluetooth seems odd to me, where would you place it? How would you keep it from moving around?
If they planned on having a second analog stick, they'd have started with it there.

That would be a quantum leap in Gaming in my opinion.

At this point I'm really think Nintendo needs to do a full recall of all 3DS units on store shelves, and offer a buyback program for all purchased units. Send the system back to R&D and launch it again after actually looking beyond their 3D and motion control gimmicks and putting on functional controls.
If they don't, this will just be another half assed peripheral that will be forgotten just like the collection of Wii devices (motionplus, balance board, other stuff) that no one develops for.
Their current handling of the 3DS has been a catastrophe like Sony handling the PSP at the start.

Update: Circle Pad Attachment Coming to 3DS (http://www.1up.com/news/circle-pad-attachment-coming-3ds)
Well, I'm mad. They released an incomplete system just to end up releasing a probably overpriced perpherial that may not even get released stateside.
Basically, having a 3DS without this would lead to it being totally obsolete, plenty of games will utilize this extra circle pad and extra shoulder button (only R2, no L2).
Well, good thing I didn't invest in a 3DS.

I think that thing is made by Capcom for use with MH, Nintendy didn't have anything to do with it, and I doubt any games will need it, including MH.
---------- Post added at 06:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:26 AM ----------
My thoery is based on the design of the thing by the way, if Nint made it they would have included some consistency with the pre existing design.
Demon-Mask
09-11-2011, 01:30 AM
Oh, okay. That would be better.
I got used to playing MH without a second analog stick, you don't really need it to effectively control the camera and the character at the same time.

Slime Slayer
09-11-2011, 01:39 AM
I think Nintendo would have kept the same shape as the 3DS and not rounded off the corners so much, I think that the unit would sit flush in the attachment, and the second analog would have been the same size as the original one. Right now its looking very Madcats 'ish to me.
---------- Post added at 06:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:37 AM ----------

Valid point, one thing you'll notice is the perspective of the 2 different circle pads, one is smaller but since they are laying on the same angle the should be the same shape, the one on the right is definetly a lot closer to the shape of a circle, while the one on the left is much more eliptical.

It needs to send an electrical signal from the pad to the 3ds. "See all that stuff in there Homer? That's why your robot never worked."

I don't understand why/how you think it would work without power.

I seriously doubt we will see it localized, there is one for GBA I'm gonna check out though.

I'm admittedly uninformed about this. To me this is just something that attaches to the system and works with the existing hardware. I'm not trying to be difficult, honest.

I know, but every electronic device needs a power source to operate.
In this case A) to get voltage readings for the analog and B) to transmit that information to the 3DS.
As I said earlier, it doesn't look like the attachment connects electronically to anything on the 3DS, so there's no way to draw power from it. So it needs it's own power source.

Well that's not gonna be popular with people I bet. I know I hate changing extra batteries.

The battery will probably last a very long time, more than you'd think.
On my rumble pack for the Nintendo 64 controller, I recently replaced the batteries. The expiration date on them was May 2007. And the expiration dates on batteries are usually 4 years in the future. So these batteries lasted 8 years and would have lasted more (they were still working), but I replaced them because the terminals were actually corroding and I didn't want any acid leaks inside in the thing.
And these were two AAA batteries on a device that uses actuators for rumble. Actuators gobble down A LOT of power.
The 3DS attachment is just powering an analog to digital converter chip (for the analog pad) and (probably) a wireless transmitter to feed that info to the 3DS. It will last a while.
Apple keyboards are wireless and require two AA batteries. I don't know how long they last, but there's not much complaining there so I think power wise this thing will be ok.

Contrary to popular beleif, even a sheet of paper exists in 3 dimensions.
Should I start using emoticons every time I make a joke? I'm not a damned idiot, I know paper has three dimensions.
I think the more recent Paper Mario games used the fact that paper exists in three dimensions to have interesting abilities. I don't really remember.
What do you think any electronic device runs on? Magic?
Yes, everything runs on magic.

@DB: For simplicity's sake the circle pad is like a remote control as the 3DS is the TV. You would be changing out the circle pad's battery about as often as you chnge out a remote control's battery.

So now that that's settled why didn't they just make this as a part of the system before launch? It really hasn't been that long since release so I think it's a fair question.

Ok but then isn't it strange for a game developer to make an attachment for the system like that? Does it mean they don't think the core system works well with Capcom games when it comes to controls?
Slime Slayer
09-16-2011, 05:11 PM
Think of it like the guitar hero attachment on the ds. The developpers just thought it would be better with a different control scheme. MH is designed for the user to control the camera him or herself, they wanted to preserve that "feature".
Dudebro
09-16-2011, 05:14 PM
Yeah but the difference is Capcom isn't making some radically different game with equally different controls, are they? It does seem like the controls that are sold with the system aren't up to par with what capcom needs for it's games.

Didnt you just read what I typed? They wanted to preserve the camera control, thus requiring a second analog.

Nintendo isn't gonna go around to every developper and ask them how the system should be designed for frig sakes.

I read what you said but I thought MH was related to your guitar hero thing, now I get it. But that means they're doing this for a couple games that might not be sold outside the US or am I missing something?
Btw no need to double post if no one replied after you, we probably didn't see it yet anyways.

About the Monster Hunter controls, it worked quite well with four face buttons, one analog nub, two shoulder buttons and a d-pad in the past, what's different here?
They could even use the touch screen for something or other to make it work better.

@DM: The point is that the d-pad is on the bottom, which may make it even more awkward than the controls on Freedom 2/Freedom Unite were. Admittedly, I still probably wouldn't get the attachment and force myself to use the d-pad for the camera. Means I don't need to take my thumb away from the attack/items/dodge buttons!
How does the new D-Pad communicate with the 3DS? Wireless? Bluetooth?
I think what might have been confusing some people is you plug a controller into an NES or USB or nearly anything else and the controller doesn't need it's own power supply. But I don't think this is plugged into anything.
Also, first post said N was going to announce something big. Was it just the second circle pad? Because that doesn't sound very big and it was Capcom that is doing it, not N.
Slime Slayer
09-17-2011, 02:23 PM
Im not sure what the "big" thing was supposed to be. I think Nintendo probably just dropped the word casually during an interview and the rumours spread and the whole thing got blown out of proportion.

How does the new D-Pad communicate with the 3DS? Wireless?
It'll be wireless. The system just plugs into the cradle.
From pictures it looks like the thing covers the cartridge slot.
I'm guessing that communication will be through infrared medium. The top of the cartridge will have an infrared window and the game will take data from the attachment through that. It makes sense to me, infrared requires very little power.
Also, first post said N was going to announce something big.
I think the 'big' thing was Monster Hunter 4. It may not be big for us but remember this was a conference for Japan. That series is hugely popular there, it pretty much single handedly saved the PSP in that region.

I just like to know things, if that makes sense. I do eventually plan on buying a 3DS, I like to know if this would be something critical or not.

I never thought the controls in Freedom Unite were particularly bad, I've had worse controls.
