This news about From Dust is very unsettling. Not the ridiculous internet connection thing, although that's bad too. The news that the PC version is badly ported and buggy. I haven't been able to try it yet but I think I'll just get a refund and buy it on Xbox. Supposedly it's ported like a 360 game anyways. At least this way I'll get back my 15 bucks and I can spend my free points on it. Wonder if they'll let me keep the free hat in TF2?

Very cool move by Notch. Its nice to see developers who aren't consumed by the business side of the industry.

Hey, Bethesda! Let's settle this! : The Word of Notch (http://notch.tumblr.com/post/9038258448/hey-bethesda-lets-settle-this)

Basically they are in a situation regarding the right to use the word "scrolls" in their game title. Notch challenged them to a fps deathmatch to settle it. Obviously Notch has nothing to loose since his game isn't out yet, but whatever it's fun.

I'm just wondering how in the heck something like the word scrolls can have any sort of trademark attached to it.

Dudebro
08-20-2011, 06:46 PM
I read the linked article but it was short and didn't really explain the situation. Which game is Notch making? What trademark is Bethesda trying to protect, Elder Scrolls?

Here's a better article about it, by Notch himself.

Seems pretty stupid. Like the article says "Scrolls" is not how anyone identifies the games. In fact I've only ever seen people refer to them as ES, TES or by their version name, like Oblivion. Without the "elder" part it's not the same. I can't imagine why they'd think they have a case.

Kong

I think scrolls is too generic to successfully trademark.

Interesting thread but I think a summery of the interesting links will help draw attention. I personally will only read the comments and not click through to every article.

I've always only called them by their version name, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, ect.
Everyone knows what you are talking about, why bother with the whole title?

Do you mean that you will just read the R.U. comments and go from there? The links have sufficient information in them for someone to decide weither or not they are interested.

I dint click all of them, just the ones who's title caught my eye.

@DM- Well you need to refer to them as TES or ES when you're talking about more than one. But no one is calling the series scrolls or the scrolls.

@Kong- The first one is notable, Japan is phasing out sales of 360s and games. It's not a huge shocker at all but it's not something MS wants. But when you figure this is one of the most popular 360 games over there

Ah, there are other versions of it, I believe those would have to be rhythm games.

From it's description it's a rhythm and life sim. You play a rising pop star and do dating sim like interactions between music timing mini games.

I mean the RU comments. I personally want a summery, not an article or title.

But I'm not trying to speak for everyone or as the admin, I know I am very far from the target audience for this. My interest in modern gaming doesn't go much further than a passive curiosity that stems mostly from an interest in making predictions about tech and then seeing how close I was.

For me this kinda stuff helps me track the state of gaming, it's nice to have your finger on the pulse.

@Tails- I think it's because it's not really a surprise to anyone.

@steven- He's just saying he's not gonna skim through a list of links to find something interesting. I think that's actually more common than you guys think. If you don't catch people with something interesting they'll just pass over it all.

Yes but there should be obvious patterns in the characteristics of what kinda games you think are fun.

I guess there are patterns but, they are more genre-related than anything. I tend to enjoy RPGs and fighting games but, it doesn't matter when they were made.

And it will suck. I can't believe they're already pumping out a new one after the lackluster recent one. After all that waiting they let down fans hard and now they think they'll sell a sequel? Fools.

Germany lifted the Doom ban after 17 years is worth a lol. Way to fall behind pretty much every other county in the world for no real reason. At least banning Wolfenstein and Doom 2 for Nazi imagery makes sense.

Also that Dues Ex thing is ridiculous, listen to her voice and what she says. Like the devs didn't think that would be seen as racist.

@DB, I don't see it as racist in the slightest, unless she says something near the end. To me it's just another character, what excatly is racist?

Funny thing about the doom ban being lifted, they say the reason it's being lifted id because the graphics are no longer realistic enough.

Dudebro

It's racist because she talks and acts like a stereotype of a dirt poor black person. It's an over the top nonsense character that didn't need to be like that. The voice doesn't even seem to match the character, sounds more like mammy from Gone with the Wind.

Well I don't see the racism, your point of view suggests those types of people have no place in video games -now that's racist.

Dudebro

It's not that. My point is they intentionally chose a black character with a stereotypical accent to be the one digging through the trash and begging the white man for money. It's a bit much. They must've known it would cause controversy so it was most likely very intentional.

I just don't understand where someone could draw racism from that. Take a look at a game like GTA San Andreas, that game takes that stereotype and bases the entire game around it, I don't recall anything in the news about it being concidered racist.

I could see it if the lady was eating a bucket KFC during the cut scene, but to me she just seems like a character in a story, and I don't see it as demeaning towards African American's at all. In fact I thought the character was well spoken, quick witted and overall likable.

This is just one of those situations where we see it differently I guess, I wouldnt mind hearing a few other opinions on the situation out of curiosity.

Dudebro

Well you linked the article that speaks about this racial controversy so there's more opinions right there. If SE has to make a statement about it then you know it's offended a large number of people.

GTA is a bad example, everyone is a stereotype in those games.

DQX - 3DS calling it.

Oh my god if they did that, I will run all the way to Japan and start pleasuring people at random.

I'm pretty sure Square Enix has already said Dragon Quest 10 would be on the Wii.

Yes but that was a looooong time ago now, and they've quiet about it since then. Plus it would make perfect sense to put it on the 3DS (from Nintendo's standpoint anyway) because it will move a ton of systems, rather than put it out on the very last of the Wii's lifespan. Here's hoping anyway.

It doesn't look the least bit legit.
Sorry to disappoint.

I think Atlus should focus on releasing new games, instead of porting their exist games multiple times.
Persona 3 has been released three times, and it hasn't even been that long since its release. Now Persona is getting a port, and it's been even less time since the release.

I think most people would rather just see a Persona 5 instead of more Persona 3/4.

Live blog by someone who knows Japanese, start from the bottom:
14:55: Regarding the release time frame, Hori said it will be 2012.
14:54: Hori and Saito take the stage for a parting message.
14:52: Regarding the Wii U version, Iwata notes that players who begin playing on the Wii could continue on the Wii U after they pick up that system.
14:49: Iwata congradulates the series on its 25th anniversary. It's also Zelda's 25th anniversary, he reminds.
14:48: Next, they bring out Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata to speak.
14:47: They're going to have a beta test. Details will be announced shortly.
14:46: Next Hori announces a bit of possible 3DS compatibility. They're thinking about something where you can transfer your character to your 3DS for Spot Pass transfers with other players.
14:46: The staff is working to make DQX graphically superior on Wii U. The Wii and Wii U versions will be played in the same world, though -- they will be crossplatform.
14:45: They just announced Dragon Quest X for Wii U!
14:45: Next, a surprise!
14:44: The hosts ask for a development status update. The producer just gives a generic bit about how they're working hard on the game, and so forth.
14:44: The video of the play session ends.
14:42: When you're not playing, you can let your character be used by other players in their parties.
14:41: This time, he has a new weapon and upped his skill points. He and his new party of two other NPCs face off agains the Golem. Other players who are in your area as you fight appear translucent and show their support for you.
14:40: The music playing in the background as he plays is all new DQX music from Sugiyama.
14:40: He's going to try the Golem battle that he lost in the previous clip. This time, he's going to use a new weapon.
14:39: You can also create your own home. Your friends can come visit.
14:39: You can create weapons that are used by other people. If your weapon is used by many, your status/name will rise.
14:38: Now they're introducing a section called "life in the Dragon Quest X world." You can take things like weapon and accessory maker jobs.
14:37: Players can help other players who've fallen.
14:35: You can see other players fighting in the world. This looks MMORPGish. I don't think they've said how many people can exist in the same world though.
14:34: He's adventuring with an NPC that he selected himself. The characters have job and race (the five races from the title -- dwarves, elfs, etc...).
14:34: Like past DQ games, you go to the pub to assemble a party.
14:33: The game screen is being kept simple and clean, Fujisawa says.
14:33: You can create your own character.
14:33: They're showing a play demo that was filmed earlier.
14:32: Director Jin Fujisawa takes the stage to show the game.
14:30: The next theme is things that may relieve those worried about online games. You'll be able to logout easily, for instance. You won't have to play with others -- the game can be cleared 100% on your own, using NPC characters. The commands will be familiar.
14:30 (Season means things like New Years, Halloween, etc... not seasons like Fall, Winter).
14:29: There will be various events with every season.
14:28: The game will also have added quests post release -- like in Dragon Quest IX. It will be at the same pace or even faster pace that DQIX's. Some of the quests will span multiple volumes.
14:27: They'll have a job change system. They won't announce the name of the system today. After release, there will be additional jobs.
14:27: Next a concept: "The joy of being able to play forever."
14:27: He's not sharing details on the story -- just showing artwork and telling players to imagine from there.
14:26: The game will have a huge story, Saito says. (In case you were worried about it being online and all...)
14:25: Hori and Saito are looking at the five race artwork and praising Toriyama's work.
14:24: The game is set in Astortia, which has five continents and five races -- the five races listed in the surname.
14:23: Saito explains the game's concept, world view, etc...
14:22: Everything is being developed internally. Even the CG work from the intro was from Visual Works (Square Enix's movie staff).
14:22: This is the first time the game is being developed inside Square Enix.
14:21: Producer Yosuke Saito takes the stage.
14:21: Hori is calling out the game's producer.
14:19: They've delivered messages.
14:19: Akira Toriyama and Sugiyama Koichi are, of course, handling the character designs and music.
14:18: Regarding the online, your allies will be real players.
14:17: Hear that? It's for Wii! So no more questions about platform changes!
14:16: The game is going to be an online RPG. It's for Wii.
14:16: The surname leaked out in a trademark filing a while back.
14:15: Dragon Quest X Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku
14:14: Developed by Square Enix, the clip said...
14:13: He's going to show a video to introduce the next DQ game.
14:10: He's recalling how low tech things were back when the first DQ came out -- the game fit in the file size of a cell phone wallpaper screen.
14:10: He thanks the fans for the series being able to go on for so long.
14:09: "Hello, I am Hori."
14:09: DQ series father Hori Yuuji takes the stage!
14:08: The new Dragon Quest portal site, Dragon Quest Paradise, is opening today. It's at dragonquest.jp.
14:08: Now he's speaking about upcoming non game developments.
14:08: Yes we will! December 1 is the release date!
14:08: Next up, Itadaki Street Wii... I believe Fortune Street in the US? Will we get a release date?
14:08: Yes we will! November 2 is the release date!
14:08: Next, Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 3 for 3DS. This was previously announced before, of course. Will we get a release date?
14:08: He's beginning by introducing upcoming near-term developments for the series, first DQ Collection, which hits Wii on 9/15.
14:07: Miyake is the executive producer of the Dragon Quest series at Square Enix.
14:05: Yuu Miyake takes the stage (I think that's his name).
14:04: The MCs said the reason why they're MCing. The dude is gong to be hosting some Square Enix net program that will start off with a DQ special. The girl will be appearing as a guest on the first episode.

Even though they have a rabid fanboy base this is still risky. MMOs are not doing well anymore and one that requires you to buy a 3DS or WiiU will suffer from limited access. If they don't release it for PC it's probably doomed to fail.

This is an interesting point DB especially as I stare at an advertisement from World of WarCraft offering free play up to level 20.

Sign of the times with MMO's where they need to do something more extreme to generate more customers?

Dudebro

I think it's just that customers are over the MMO novelty. The fact that wow is offering free play at all shows the current atmosphere of MMOs. Almost all of them now feature cash shops or FTP with premium content for paid subscribers. They're desperate and losing money. People don't wanna pay monthly to grind or chat with friends. Without being too pessimistic I'm gonna guess that DQ MMO is gonna bomb and only be propped up by it's rabid fanbase.

I think this will flop in NA and JP and the rest of the world. DQ fans are so die hard because they never messed with the recipie.

Squeenix already messed up the FF series because of their greed, and I can't beleive that they are going to do it again. Who knows, there is a long time between now and release, DQ 9 was slated to be an Action RPG and the Japanese fans damn near burnt down the Squeenix offices. Squeenix relented and reverted the game back to it's roots, so who knows, maybe it will happen again.

Yeah, I've totally not played the first three, all of the monsters games that saw U.S. releases and another game somewhere in the middle of the main series.
You stated that DQ never changes the formula, it has made some changes. While I agree that random battles changed for avoidable battles is not a big change but, a change nonetheless.
The general feel of the series has not changed, it is always grind, grind, grind. But, there's some magic in all of that grinding that makes it enjoyable, not tedious.

There are staples in the series that are constant, Slimes, the townsfolk, the equipment, the sfx, and the list goes on and on. These things along with the gamplay of an amazing single player experience is what makes up the world. There was a certain comfort in the DQ world that I have never experienced in any other game, bar none.

It may destroy DQ for you but it might be great for lots of other fans. IF it works out well they could have a living breathing DQ online community. That's a huge money maker when it works. If it's successful they could have tons of money and momentum for future games while the MMO is up and running.

But given how fantastically SE failed with their last MMO, FF14, I don't see this going well at all.

DQ9 borrowed a lot from FF11, I played both and noticed the similarities pretty clearly. I agree it was there way of preparing people for this transition or at least setting the framework. That being said if it's anything like FF11 it will be heavy on grind and not do well in NA. But I assume they learned something from FF14, but you never know.

Tiger Woods Game Pulled - PC News at IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/066/066438p1.html)
Due to the unauthorized inclusion of a South Park AVI on the PlayStation version of EA's Tiger Woods 99 (http://pc.ign.com/objects/004/004006.html) game, Electronic Arts (http://games.ign.com/objects/025/025025.html) is recalling the title, yanking it off the shelves and apologizing to everyone involved.
Apparently, someone at EA sneaked 'The Spirit of Christmas' AVI onto the Tiger Woods CD. While not accessible via the PlayStation, it can be found if you put the PSX disc in a PC. EA describes this process:
"Viewing the material requires that a person place the PlayStation disc into the CD drive of a PC, at which point a sophisticated computer user can locate the normally inaccessible file."
EA describes the content of the AVI as "objectionable to consumers." The AVI is a profanity-laden tirade made before the South Park property was picked up by Comedy Central; basically an uncensored version of one of the later shows.
There is no South Park AVI on the PC version.

If it were 100% free-to-play, it might be cool. If there were an optional cash-shop with non-game breaking items, it might be cool. If there is a subscription fee, it has no chance of being cool, in my opinion.
If I pay forty-dollars for a game, I don't want to have to continue to pay another twenty per-month just to keep playing a game I already own.

If it has single-player support, it could still be worth checking out.

I doubt we'll ever see a truly free to play online game that's any good. It's either cash shop or subscription. Btw subscriptions can work if the company gives constant updates to make it worth your money. But that means a pretty consistent schedule of updates which isn't realistic unless they hold back or chop up content.

If I pay ten dollars a month, I want ten additional dollars worth of content. Ten dollars worth of extra quests/areas/weapons and whatnot. Patches to fix glitches/balance issues should not count in this, as they made the mistakes in the first-place.
Basically, I expect something perfectly reasonable, but it is something that no company will ever end up doing.

That's why I used 9 as an example, if that's the content they are willing to ad for free, then what they will ad for a fee must be huge.

Precicely, it was effective too. When you normally beat a game you breath a sigh and pat yourself on the back and move on with a bit of dissapointment that it's over. With DQ 9 you never got that, and it really did feel kinda like a never endidng game. The only reason I stopped playing it was because my team was so over powered that there was no more challenge remaning.

That's what I was saying about holding back or chopping up content. Even if it's not blatantly obvious it will still happen. If they know they can charge down the line or label it as a content update then they will. I think MMO/DLC heavily encourages shady practices by game companies.

Btw another point is your subscription goes to upkeep of the constant world you play on. Cash shop games usually suffer for this reason. If the company is only making money off optional purchases then they're gonna focus on that instead of other mundane stuff players take for granted(until they become big problems). In the end it comes down to a cash grab, make as much money as possible before the game becomes a ghost town.

Sorry for being so negative but it seems like the good old days of MMO are gone. No more large expansions that add tons of content to the game. No more balanced gameplay across the board. Now it's completely about money. If you have more you'll have an advantage over people who don't.

NWR confirmed during their Newscast that DQX will not require an online connection to finish the game. They also confirmed that there will be weekly updates in the same manner as DQIX.
Awesome news, although now I'm even more confused. I'm guessing it's like DQ 9 with the option of playing with real people in your world that you can team up with.

Sorry for being so negative but it seems like the good old days of MMO are gone. No more large expansions that add tons of content to the game. No more balanced gameplay across the board. Now it's completely about money. If you have more you'll have an advantage over people who don't.

Your post proves that MMOs are a perfect representation of capitalism.

More good news SC.

DQX will most likely NOT have a subscription payment system outside of Japan a la Monster Hunter as it is distributed by Nintendo outside of Japan like Monster Hunter.

Also, it is not an MMO. It is party based online.

That's what I'm talkin about! And just to clarify, party based online is essentially just an option to play through the game with your friends online if you want to? If that's the case we really gotta convince lots of RU'ers to buy the game. Done correctly, this could be a giant step forward for RPG's.

I just read the first link "Binding of Isaac" and I thought how can you make a game out of that so I googled. Not much info has been released yet but.

The Binding of Isaac: Trailer - YouTube

It is a cross between Rogue, Smash TV and the NES Zelda dungeons. Instead of a level up system there are stackable items.

It is supposed to be released later this week on Steam for $5.

I'm not sure what kind of game they'll make it but it seems like it will be some kind of RPG. I say it that way because the only other game about it was a blend of FPS and strategy.
The Wheel of Time PC Games Gameplay - YouTube

I doubt they'll go with that exact route though, didn't work too well last time. It was received well but it got overshadowed by other FPS on the market. That's bound to happen again so I suspect they'll go with a different direction.

The company Red Eagle owns the movie and game rights.

They are planning on making a movie for each book, 14, and several games. In other words they are planning on milking this for crapload of money over the next decade.

They are creating their own game studio from scratch to create the games and have hired Obsidian to help them. They chose Obsidian because they think they make good RPGs so I think we can assume the games will be RPGs.

They said the games will not share plots with the books/movies because that usually means a crappy game. The games will just be set in the same world.

Dudebro
10-17-2011, 06:06 PM
I read that info too. One thing that might be an issue for you is the way Obsidian makes RPGs. They've recently been making mainly 3D/FPS style games. I don't think they'll do a 180 and make an RPG you'd be ok with, but it's not impossible.

Btw is it really milking the franchise when the alternative is having no games about the series?

Dudebro

How does that make sense? The series is finished, the author died and now they're making games and movies based on it. Like I said before it's either make games or not. Is there any way to make a game off existing material without milking it?

So the only way it's not milking is if the source material is a flop? Sorry but that's just ridiculous to me. If the source is not successful then companies won't risk making games/movies off them anyways.

I was mainly referring to the movies. I was thinking of the success of the Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings movies. There are 14 books in this series and it looks like they are planning on making a movie for each book.

I'm not complaining or saying they shouldn't do it or that they should do it differently. I am just saying they are going to make a butt load of money and we will probably be seeing these movies for the next 2 decades. I did not mean to imply a judgment, negative or positive.

Dudebro
10-18-2011, 05:36 PM
Well referring to something as being milked is usually negative that's why I asked. To me a movie is milking it when they split up a book, like Harry Potter and The Hobbit are doing. I don't read HP but I don't recall The Hobbit being that big. If they made one movie for each of the better LOTR books then there's really no excuse.

Kugyince
10-18-2011, 07:49 PM

The point was that they are making more money of something that is already established, hence, milking a success. Obviously you can't milk something that wasnt already a success, and again, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

It's mainly been useful for video games to this point, specifically a PSP game called GachiTora. Good game, it hasn't been an obstacle at all that it is entirely in Japanese. Akiba's Trip was a bit more difficult, less voiced dialog and lots of speach patterns that I find hard to follow.

Speech is hard to follow, since native speakers tend to go very fast.
Text is easier, it takes a little longer with kanji lookups but you can get the general idea even if there are grammar structures you don't understand.

I'm no pro, but after a few semesters of study and practice on my own results defintely show. Lately I've been writing up an English translation of an old MSX game on my own.

Good job on the translation. Personally, I'd have not refered to Lars as Lars XVII until he was referred to as such in the Japanese, but I can see why you'd have treated it how you did. It actually makes more logical sense to refer to him as Lars XVII from the beginning. Keep up the good work.
I actually follow speach at least as well as I do writing. To be honest, voiced dialog in video games has helped with my listening skills, it gives me a rare chance to hear Japanese at natural spoken speeds. I guess anime is useful in that regard, too.

It's that usual problem of juggling implicit/explicit meaning between the languages. English requires a bit more stuff to get the full meaning across, whereas Japanese is a very compact language. You can see that as how the english screens are more crowded with text.

I actually have a lot more of this done (18/25 screens) but no need to fill the forum with those =P.

I feel like this will result in a decrease of quality. Sure, the current Final Fantasy games may not be the best, but they have top-notch graphics and are all around solid. Cut the development time to a year, and things may not turn out so well.

I haven't played XIII, so I can't vouch for its gameplay, but then again, I doubt you've played it either. I'm sure you're just jumping on the post-VII Final Fantasy hate bandwagon. At the very least, a lot of effort went into it on a graphical standpoint, and I doubt the gameplay is horrible. It makes more sense for such story-heavy games to be linear, anyway.

I think they look hideouse, some of the worst designs going in gaming right now. The series has changed too much from when I liked it, it started at 7, 8 was about the same, 9 was a step in the right direction, and then it was all downhill.

If you think that I don't actually beleive this and that I'm just saying it because I hink it makes me cool then you are sadly mistaken, and FF 7 was no doubt your first FF.

I don't mind the spin off's so much, I liked Crystal Chronicals.

If you don't like the designs, you don't like the desings. I wasn't talking so much about the designs as I was the graphical quality as a whole. Things like lighting and shadows, textures and polygons. That sort of thing.
VII certainly wasn't my first, it was IV, but it was called II at the time. Just because I don't absolutely hate post-VII Final Fantasy, doesn't mean that I started there.
I do prefer the spinoffs in some ways, I like the FF Tactics game, the Crystal Chronicles games were good, and I liked Dissidia.

Demon-Mask's point I felt was a little off to the side, but I really do think it adds another dimension if you can try to see the artistic perspective of not just this Final Fantasy game, but all of them. You don't have to be mesmerized, and it will probably be out dated in ten years, but it's really something if you can allow yourself to slow down and observe the details.

The series has changed too much from when I liked it, it started at 7, 8 was about the same, 9 was a step in the right direction, and then it was all downhill. So the games that came out for the Play Station are the ones you are basing an opinion off of? Only FFX and FFXIII have a theme similar to that of VII and VIII.

If you think that I don't actually beleive this and that I'm just saying it because I hink it makes me cool then you are sadly mistakenNo one has said that you were trying to look cool, and I'm getting some pretty strong signals that you've not yet played Final Fantasy XIII. I brought this thing up because you strongly seem to believe that Final Fantasy has grown weaker than it's roots, but in reality I think that each game is it's own tree of the same garden. Each tree produces different fruit, as Square Enix has always changed up the game for each one (except for XIV, which is being completely redone by a more experienced staff) and they really should be admired by it's own flaws and qualities, and not needlessly segregated into the "good" and "bad" era.

and FF 7 was no doubt your first FF.Your connecting Demon-Mask, who said that the graphics for newer Final Fantasy games were amazing, with FF7, something you consider to be different from the rest of the series and which you believe started an era that you disliked. Is the idea of people being one thing or another that critical to you?

Anyways, I'm not too big into the spin-offs, but then again, I haven't played many.

I like the series pretty much all the way through. As I said, I started with IV, it is also my favorite. I'm just saying you shouldn't just write off an entire series because it had a game you didn't like.
I was speaking about how the graphics are at least better than average. Graphics, not desings. The textures look nice, the lighting looks nice, they are really detailed. That kind of thing. Whether something is detailed or not isn't even subjective.

Final Fantasy 9 is the best, FF5 is second best, the rest vary on the "like" scale, although they are all mostly good quality. The only one I outright dislike is FF10.
I haven't played 11, 13, or 14 so I'll withold judgement.

Square Enix wants to release a Final Fantasy every year or two (http://redd.it/http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-21-se-wants-to-release-a-final-fantasy-every-year-or-two) They don't need to release a numbered FF game every year or two, but they do need to speed up the development cycle for FF games, they take way too long and have too much money investment in them. They need to become more efficient at it or be less ambitious about it.

Metal Gear Solid 5: “We’ll have to make it” says Hideo Kojima (http://redd.it/http://www.officialplaystationmagazine.co.uk/2011/11/21/metal-gear-solid-5-ps3-well-have-to-make-it-says-hideo-kojima/)

He needs to stop. MGS4 was a horrible game, but it still tied up all the loose ends with the overall Metal Gear plot.
If he wants to make a new Metal Gear game, he really needs to come up with a new universe entirely, with new people not named Snake, Naomi, Fox, Otacon, etc.
Right now all that's happening is that he is filling in random blanks in Big Boss' history that never needed to be filled.

Final Fantasy games definitely do spend too much time in development.
I feel like MGS2 would have made a good end point to the series. I didn't feel like there needed to be a definite ending, the open ending worked well. MGS3 was awesome, and it could have been a great endpoint. We at least knew where Big Boss was coming from, that was enough. MGS4 was problematic in that it turned EVERYTHING into nanomachines. Liquid controlling Ocelot through their shared arm? Nanomachines. Vamp being damn-near immortal and being inhumanly fast and strong? Nanomachines. Where do babies come from? Nanomachines.
In all honesty, it took the futurisitic elements that worked well in MGS/MGS2 and overdid them to the point where it was impossible to follow.

Ending on MGS2 could have been a high note.
People don't like Raiden for several silly reasons (not as badass as Snake, wussy, etc.) but probably mainly because they were expecting Snake in the sequel of one of the biggest Playstation games. Kojima pulled off a brilliant public troll by claiming Snake would be in MGS2 and preventing any leaks of Raiden's existence from getting outside of the company. Heck, even the box and the instruction manual don't acknowledge Raiden at all. But people wanted Snake, and the average opinion of of MGS2 suffers for that fact alone.

However, this was exactly Kojima's point of demonstrating the effects of control and misinformation. Build up people's expectations, and give them what they want and success is guaranteed. Probably most of the people who played MGS2 missed the point of the deception entirely. Straight over their heads like sheep. The whole 'manipulating Raiden' theme was just a reflection of Kojima manipulating the player. This kind of fourth wall breaking had never been seen before or since.

In the end, Raiden faces a choice: to continue to serve as a puppet and a slave to his past, or the break away from the path chosen for him by others and make his own destiny. Indirectly, the player makes that choice for him, by killing Solidus, or doing nothing and getting a game over, thus avoiding any responsibility for the future. Absolutely brilliant.

</pro MGS2 rant>

The awesomeness of MGS3 is on another level though, and needs no change to what was presented.

On the other hand, I do think closing out all of the ends in MGS4 could have been done well. But Kojima opted to make the most confusing story imaginable. If there ever was a game that showed video games becoming more cutscene than gameplay, MGS4 is it.

*actual experience*
I had been playing MGS4 on my friend's PS3. My file was directly after beating the second boss Raven. I booted the game on, saying "I'm going to play some MGS4." Literally an hour later, after the preliminary Snake vs. Liquid cutscene, after the showdown of Liquid vs. Meryl on the river, after the long mission briefing, I saved, turned the game off, and said to my friend "I didn't play any MGS4."

That Skyrim news is really interesting. I think it shows that they plan on adding the lands from previous games as DLC at some point. I don't expect it to be 100% like the previous games but the fact that they have an accurate representation of the world in there already means something. Why would they waste time and money on background no one will see unless they mod it on PC? Why add all that just to make it easier for modders to recreate the past games? I'm excited to see Morrowwind again in awesome graphics.

I think Kojima just wanted exposure for the plot lines from the Metal Gear games on the MSX2 computer.
The plot ramifications of MGS3 are more or less missed out on if you didn't play the Metal Gear titles on the MSX2, which most likely very few people in the US know even exist.
MGS4 tried to connect the lines between past & present, but did so in the most elaborate, complicated, and stupid way possible. The way the series ended was two senile old men fighting over a bunch of steroids.

Oh, and somehow Major Zero and Big Boss came back from the dead (again), before going right back. At least BB got that one last smoke in.

I liked the final fight in MGS4. I've always loved the fistfights in the series. Except for in Peace Walker where there were no human vs. human battles at all. That really irked me, I loved the boss fights in the eariler series, but those were all ditched for armored vehicles, tanks and helicopters, with a few AI weapons thrown in.

With the awesome CQC mechanics, the emphasis on weapons and the combat-centric controls, it would have been nice to face human bosses.
Think about it, Metal Gear 1 & 2 had human bosses, MGS 1- 4 and Portable Ops had human bosses, even the Metal Gear Acid games had human bosses.
The bosses in MGS3 were all really dumb with no backstory at all, and it was still okay. I think they could have managed a few human bosses.

I'd have been happy with three of them.
You have to admit though, coming up with more weird gimmick fighting styles for those fights would be a bit tough. I'm not saying that solo boss fights are less valued than what they appear to be or anything, I actually quite like them, but the MG series has done so much that I think it's hard to come up with many fresh ideas while saving them for future games. Ninjas, vampires, telepaths, clones, ghosts, fist fights in minefields, Sean Connery, cosmonauts, and even bee keepers are pretty much all off the list.

On a more serious level, I think that these kinds of fights would be hard to pull off in PW due to the amount of ammo and health you have available per level, but perhaps this could be altered by making it difficult to call in for supplies.

About the Vita, even games you already own that are discounted cost around five dollars, that's ridiculous.
Why does a fighting game with various characters have to be related to Super Smash Bros., maybe it plays more like Street Fighter or Tekken or something. That, and it's like saying that Marvel vs. Capcom is a response to SSB, it's ridiculous.
It's nice to see one company that doesn't believe in DRM.
GamePro dieing is kind of sad.
The Vita memory card prices are ridiculous.
It's cool that Xenoblade Chronicles is going to be released in the United States.
Ridiculous seems like my word of the day, sorry.

Probably just take a road trip to the U.S. some week-end. But yeah, it's exclusive to Game Stop, we have only have E.B.'s here. That and you can order it directly from Nintendo.com.

No one noticed the new South Park game? It's not like the shovelware we've seen before this is an rpg with direct input from the creators.

The Game will be the first title that SP creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have actively participated in, and as previously reported (http://www.vg247.com/2011/12/01/south-park-the-game-to-grace-january-game-informer-cover/), have written the script and all the dialogue. The 2D art in the game is also hand illustrated and hand animated just like the show

When battling, players can perform critical hits, and according to the article, battles will be along the same vein as Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games, but like in turn-based RPGs or tabletop games, if the player initiates the combat, they will be the first to attack and vice versa. Players will push X for melee attacks, with multiple presses resulting in multiple hits, and timed inputs will occur for defense and reduced damage.

For weapons, the game will implement a Final Fantasy Materia-like system to use in order to apply augmentations such as electricity, fire, and poison. Players will also be able to use a Summon System but, no one involved in the game is ready to talk about it yet.

Sounds good to me.

I'm mildly interested in the South Park game, it's pretty much the funniest show going on t.v. right now, it's definetly gonna be hit or miss though.

@Ten, cool, good to know. I'll definetly be picking this one up.

I wonder if we will ever see the Pokemon MMO, the thing is that the game is geared towards 7-12 year olds, and that's not typically the demo for MMO's because they have too much responsibility in life. Doctor's appointments, dentist, birthday parties, playing outside...

No, I'm talking about the Gamecube game, where you would hook up your Game Boy Advance to the GC and use it as the controller. The game took place both on the TV screen and the GBA screen- when you went into a house or cave or down some stairs, the sub area would be displayed on your GBA screen. With multiple people playing each person had their own screen and item data, with the TV screen being the global environment.

It was a brilliant idea, hampered only by the fact that the GBA/GCN cables were rare and clumsy. If you actually managed to get four people with it, you'd have a blast.

This could have been more gracefully done on the Wii using wireless connection to a DS.

The game on the DSi store is the bonus Four Swords game from the GBA version of A Link to the Past ported to DS specs.

It won't deliver what the show delivers -that's impossible, and it would require an excellent game to back it up.

Well since they're writing the script and doing the artwork I think it will be pretty faithful to the show. There was also mention of them axing an idea from the game people because they didn't think it fit with the show. Might be all talk but I'll remain hopeful until I hear something bad.

I read that, but what I mean is that the show a fast paced 22 minute joke after joke start to finish story. The game might have a few parts here and there that are funny, but if the game itself isn't compelling it won't be worth playing.

Oh, that makes a lot more sense, thanks for clarifying. I never got to play that one, I got a Gamecube a bit late, never had the cords and I didn't have many friends who kept their GBAs past the DS release.

I thought the VGA's got rid of the fighting category all together, I suppose as long as there is at least 1 U.S. made game they will have it, lulz:

Best Fighting Game:
The King Of Fighters XIII
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat [Winner]
WWE All Stars

This needs to stop, seriously, they have a category for best song in a game, giving all the credit to "Florence and the Machine" or whoever just happened to get paid to put a completely unrelated song in a game, what's the next winner going to be? Welcome to the Jungle by GNR in GTA5?

No mention whatsoever of a best music/sound category.
